A Swiss woman was given a nine-year jail term on Monday for slashing two people in the name of the Islamic State group but her sentence was suspended so she can undergo psychiatric treatment.

The court found the woman, who cannot be named for legal reasons, guilty of attempted murder and of terrorism-linked charges.

She had "no respect for human life", court president Fiorenza Bergomi said as she read out the verdict.&nbsp;

She had "acted in cold blood, had planned her actions and decided what weapon to use, and where to buy it", Bergomi continued.

The 29-year-old woman's mental state was at the heart of the trial at&nbsp;Switzerland's Federal Criminal Court in Bellinzona, in the southern Italian-speaking Ticino region where the attack occurred.

The attack, which did not result in fatalities, took place on November 24, 2020 in the plush Manor department store in Lugano, near Bellinzona.

The woman had suddenly lunged at two random women shopping at the store, attempting to slit their throats.

According to the Office of the Attorney General's indictment, the accused "acted wilfully and with particular ruthlessness", shouted "Allahu akbar" (God is greatest) several times and "I will avenge the Prophet Mohammed", and declared "I am here for IS", the Islamic State jihadist group.

No remorse

One of the two victims suffered a serious neck injury, while the second sustained wounds on one hand and managed, with others, to control the assailant until the police arrived.

During the trial, the court heard that the woman has been in contact with psychologists and psychiatrists since childhood, with two experts testifying that she suffers from a range of psychological disorders.

Her lawyers argue the accused's psychological disorders mean the attack could not be considered a "terrorist act" because the woman lived in a fantasy world.

When questioned during the trial, the woman showed no remorse, telling the court: "If I could go back, I would do it better."

On Monday, she was found guilty of "repeated murder attempts" and of violating the Swiss laws against association with Al-Qaeda, IS and related Islamist groups.&nbsp;

She was&nbsp;also found guilty of repeated unlawful prostitution between 2017 and 2020.

The accused was ordered to pay the woman who suffered the most serious injuries, and who was a civil party in the case, 41,000 Swiss francs ($42,000) to cover her legal costs and as compensation for the "moral wrong".

'Lone wolves'

The court president pointed to studies indicating that terror suspects could suffer from stress and psychiatric problems.

"We must not forget that there are... people with psychiatric problems who do not belong to terrorist organisations, but who are considered lone wolves," she said.

Monday's verdict was in line with the prosecution's request, but her sentence was shorter than the 14-year-term it had asked for.

The prosecutors, who had also suggested her sentence be suspended and that she be committed to a closed treatment facility for as long as she was deemed a threat, said Monday that they "took note" of the verdict, but did not indicate whether they would appeal.

The daughter of a Swiss father and a Serbian mother, her adolescence was marked by anorexia and she did not attend secondary school.

Aged 19, she married a man of Afghan origin and converted to Islam. The pair divorced last year.

After falling in love over social media in 2017 with a jihadist in Syria, she attempted to travel to meet him, but was stopped by Turkish authorities at the Syrian border and sent back to&nbsp;Switzerland&nbsp;where she was admitted to a psychiatric clinic, police said.

Roger Federer retires: A Black Swan in tennis and GOAT beyond numbers

The United States said it has set up a professionally run fund in Switzerland to manage $3.5 billion of Afghanistan's&nbsp;central bank's reserves that were frozen following the Taliban takeover of the country.

According to reports, the new Afghan Fund was created on Wednesday, and it would have an account at the Bank for International Settlements.

The primary aim of the creation of the fund is to strengthen Afghanistan’s macroeconomic stability, including covering Afghanistan's arrears in international financial institutions and paying for electricity imports, but it will not handle humanitarian aid or government salaries, the TRT World reported.

Around $7 billion of Afghanistan’s central bank foreign currency assets are held by the US and other foreign banks.

The decision to set up a fund comes months after intense negotiations to release the $3.5 billion Afghan funds that were set aside for Afghanistan by US President Joe Biden.

The remaining $3.5 billion has been withheld by the US Federal Reserve (FED) and it will be disbursed as compensation to the victims of the September 11 attacks, which led to the US invasion of Afghanistan in 2001, the report states.

A court decision on this matter is awaited and is expected in October.

Meanwhile, the Taliban have lambasted the United States for moving its reserves to the Bank of International Settlements (BIS),

A Taliban official with the country’s central bank (DAB) told TRT World, “We don't agree with the transfer of money to the account indicated, but [we wish for it] to be transferred to Da Afghanistan Bank (DAB).”

The spokesperson added that they are open to a third-party monitoring system as demanded by the US government.

We "chose Nordlich Lagern as the safest site for a deep geological repository," Felix Glauser, a spokesman for the National Cooperative for the Disposal of Radioactive Waste (Nagra), told AFP in an email, confirming a report by Swiss news agency Keystone-ATS.&nbsp;

"Extensive investigations have shown that Nordlich Lagern is the most suitable site and has the largest safety reserves," he added.&nbsp;

Keystone-ATS reported that Nagra has informed the local populace and is expected to present the proposal to government on Monday.

Final decision from the government is unlikely to come until 2029. The issue will then likely go to a referendum.

Switzerland has opearted nuclear power plants for more than half a century. However, the country decided to phase out nuclear power after 2011 Fukushima nuclear disaster in Japan.

For now, the waste is being stored in an "intermediary depot" in Wurenlingen, some 15 kilometres from the German border.&nbsp;

The police said that the group walked on a bed of coals several metres long. It is not yet clear what was the problem, whether the coal wasn't arranged properly or those who walked on it didn't follow techniques that may have saved them from receiving burns.

The incident occurred in the Au penisular, south of city of Zurich.

Walking on coal is used as a rite of passage in many corners of the world.

Swiss airspace closed after technical glitches at Geneva and Zurich airports

Swiss&nbsp;airspace reopened Wednesday morning after a computer glitch grounded flights across the country for several hours, officials said.

"Swiss&nbsp;airspace is now open again," the Alpine nation's air traffic control service Skyguide said on Twitter, adding "the technical malfunction at Skyguide has been resolved".

It did not say what had caused the problem that shut&nbsp;Swiss&nbsp;airspace for hours Wednesday morning, but said that "air traffic over Switzerland and operations at the national airports of Geneva and Zurich are resuming".

Those airports too announced that flights had begun taking off.

"Good news! Air traffic has gradually resumed since 8:30 am (0630 GMT)," Geneva airport said in a tweet, warning that a number of flights had been cancelled and urging passengers to check with their airlines.

Zurich airport also said flight operations were "running again" at full capacity by 10:00 am (0800 GMT).

But it warned that "delays are to be expected today. We still recommend passengers to check with their airline about the status of their flight."

'Vacation could fall through'

At Geneva airport, where the first morning flights were delayed by more than three hours, dozens of travellers crowded around the information screens, with phones stuck to their ears.

Airport spokesman Ignace Jeannerat told AFP that around 2,000 people had seen their flights affected, adding that while flights were resuming, there would not be a return to normal before early Thursday.

"We are trying to find a solution," Sandrine Vert, 52, told AFP, after her family's easyJet flight to Split in Croatia was cancelled.

She, her husband and teenage daughter, who drove to the airport from Annecy in France, had been told there were now no flights from Geneva to Split until Friday, putting their one-week holiday plans on the line.

"Our vacation could fall through," she said.

The chaos erupted when Skyguide announced it had "experienced a technical malfunction in the early hours of this morning, which is why&nbsp;Swiss&nbsp;airspace has been closed to traffic for safety reasons".

It said it regretted "this incident and its consequences for its customers, partners and passengers."

The closure blocked all overflight of the country, and forced a number of flights to be rerouted to airports in neighbouring countries.

The&nbsp;Swiss&nbsp;news agency ATS said some international flights to Switzerland had been re-routed to Milan in northern Italy.

Zurich airport's website meanwhile showed that a United Airlines flight from New York had been rerouted to Frankfurt in western Germany, while a Singapore Airlines flight from the city state had been sent to the southern German city of Munich.&nbsp;

Zurich is Switzerland's largest airport, with more than 10.2 million passengers going through its terminals in 2021.

But with Covid restrictions lifted, air traffic has picked up significantly since then, with 1.9 million passengers registered there in May alone. For this summer season, it is serving flights to 191 destinations.

Flights resume after computer glitch shuts Swiss airspace

A rare albino Galapagos giant tortoise born on May 1 &nbsp;made its public debut at the Tropiquarium zoo in Servion, &nbsp;Switzerland on Friday.

Two of the tortoises were born last month at the Tropiquarium in the western town of Servion as part of a programme to preserve the endangered species.

One is black like its parents and the other is albino. Their gender is yet to be determined.

Thomas Morel, a staff member at the Tropiquarium zoo says, “At Servion’s Tropiquarium, we have three Galapagos tortoises, one male and two females that have currently reached their sexual maturity, they are about 30 years old, a bit more, they are 33. The success rate of mating is around 2 to 3 per cent because these species are very big, and mating is complicated, this is why there is very little mating for this species, so we are very happy that our male is very active and succeeded. They live around 200 years.”

“Regarding albinism, what we found out is that for tortoises, it's about one in 100,000, so it’s something very special that we are lucky to see,” He added.

The mother, who weighs more than 100 kilograms (220 lb), laid five eggs on Feb. 11 and the albino baby hatched on May 1. The other baby hatched on May 5 after the eggs spent two-and-a-half months in an incubator.

The male weighs around 180 kg. Baby turtles weigh about 50 grams at birth and fit in the palm of the hand.

Morel says, “After several months of incubation, we had the chance to see the first hatching, it was the second hatching in the Servion’s Tropiquarium, we already had one last year, and this is the second. We were quite surprised by the tortoise’s colour. It can happen at birth, but after two days, we were sure it was an albino when it pointed the tip of its head, so it was really surprising, for this species, it’s quite extraordinary.”

In one of the biggest drug busts in recent times, the Switzerland police seized more than 500kg of cocaine hidden inside a shipment of coffee beans. The shipment was being delivered to a Nespresso plant in Romont, in the western Swiss canton of Fribourg, when it was seized by the police.

According to the official statement by the police, they were alerted by the workers at the Romont plant that the shipment of coffee beans was filled with a mysterious white powder. The police reached the pant right after the tip and analysis showed that the substance was cocaine.

“Staff at the coffee capsule maker, owned by Swiss food giant Nestle, found an undetermined white substance when they unloaded the freshly delivered sacks of coffee beans,” the Fribourg police said in their official statement according to an AFP report.

The police went on to search the entire shipment which was distributed in five shipping containers and were able to recover around 500 kg of cocaine from the entire consignment.

Following the discovery, the police established a security perimeter around the factory and the containers carrying cocaine were separated in order to stop them from contaminating the plant.

According to the police report, the drug was most likely coming from Brazil and it was determined to be around 80 per cent pure, according to the AFP report. The amount of cocaine that was recovered from the Switzerland plant was valued at around £41 million according to its street value.

“It appears that all of the drugs were destined for the European market,” police said.
