<p>Taking a leaf out of Apple’s playbook, the US tech giant Google is also banking on India to diversify its supply chain away from China. According to a report by Bloomberg, Google is scouting for suppliers in India to assemble its Pixel smartphones in the country.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The California-based company is believed to have already started conversations with India’s homegrown companies like Lava International Limited and Dixon Technologies India Ltd. Google is also in talks with Foxconn Technology Group’s Indian unit Bharat FIH to set up a wide supplier base in India.</p>

After Apple, Google to shift some smartphone production to India, diversify its supply chain away from China

<p>Manikandan, who is a real estate developer himself, said that around 300 homes have been built and delivered by him. He added that he was floored by the humility of Sundar Pichai's parents.<br />

Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai earned hundreds of millions in 2022

<p>Google, intensifying the race of AI among the tech giants, announced that it will be incorporating a conversational AI chat in its search engine.</p>

<p>In an exclusive interview with The Wall Street Journal, Google CEO Sundar Pichai said that the company's search engine will be supercharged with the recent advances made in conversational AI.</p>

<p>Pichai's comments come at a time when tech giants like Microsoft, Meta and others are scrambling to incorporate AI technologies into their services and products.</p>

<p>“Will people be able to ask questions to Google and engage with large language models (LLMs) in the context of search? Absolutely,” said Pichai, while speaking to the news outlet.</p>

<p>Pichai further dismissed reports that suggested the development of chatbots is threatening the existence of the search giant.</p>

<p>“The opportunity space, if anything, is bigger than before,” said Pichai, who also heads Google's parent company Alphabet Inc.</p>

<p>The Alphabet has been developing large language models (LLMs) which can process and respond to prompts in known language with human-like answers.</p>

<p>The company, however, has till now not been able to integrate the technology into its search which accounts for more than half of the revenue that the company generates.</p>

<p>Vague hints were dropped by Google in March about its plan to integrate AI technology into its search engines, however, no information was specified on its timeline. The announcement was made when Google launched “Bard”&nbsp;— its own version of OpenAI’s ChatGPT.</p>

<p>Millions of dollars were pumped into AI powerhouse OpenAI by tech giant&nbsp;Microsoft a few weeks ago, after which ChatGPT was integrated into its Bing search engine. This development gave Microsoft's search engine an edge over Google search which is still following the conventional search approach.</p>

<p>As it continues to face heat from its rival Microsoft after the integration of ChatGPT in Bing, investors have also been pressurising Google to cut costs. Recently, Google announced that it would be laying off 12,000 employees, which comprises 6 per cent of its workforce.</p>

As it continues to face heat from its rival Microsoft after the integration of ChatGPT in Bing, investors have also been pressurising Google to cut costs. The letter added&nbsp;that recent months have seen AI labs locked in an out-of-control race to develop and deploy ever more powerful digital minds that no one – not even their creators – can understand, predict, or reliably control.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The letter also said that powerful AI systems should be developed only once people are confident that their effects will be positive and their risks will be manageable.</p>

If such a pause cannot be enacted quickly, governments should step in and institute a moratorium,” it added.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The letter was issued by the Future of Life Institute and signed by more than 1,000 people including Elon Musk. According to a report by the news agency Reuters on Thursday, the letter was not signed by OpenAI's CEO Sam Altman, Google CEO Sundar Pichai and Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Gary Marcus, a professor at New York University who signed the letter, said that the letter isn't perfect but the spirit is right — "We need to slow down until we better understand the ramifications." Marcus added the big players are becoming increasingly sensitive about what they are doing which makes it hard for society to defend against whatever harms may materialise, Reuters reported.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In a blog post, Marcus said that he disagrees with others who are worried about the near-term prospect of intelligent machines so smart that they could self-improve beyond humanity’s control. Marcus said he was more worried about “mediocre AI” that is widely deployed, including by criminals or terrorists to trick people or spread dangerous misinformation.</p>

<p>"Current technology already poses enormous risks that we are ill-prepared for. With future technology, things could well get worse," the New York University professor wrote.&nbsp;</p>

<p>James Grimmelmann, a Cornell University professor of digital and information law, said the pause on the AI race is a good idea but the letter is vague and it does not take the regulatory problems seriously.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“It is also deeply hypocritical for Elon Musk to sign on given how hard Tesla has fought against accountability for the defective AI in its self-driving cars,” Grimmelmann added.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Earlier this month, OpenAI released GPT-4 which it says exhibits human-level performance. "We’ve created GPT-4, the latest milestone in OpenAI’s effort in scaling up deep learning. GPT-4 is a large multimodal model (accepting image and text inputs, emitting text outputs) that, while less capable than humans in many real-world scenarios, exhibits human-level performance on various professional and academic benchmarks," Open AI's website said.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In an online demo on March 14, OpenAI President Greg Brockman ran through some scenarios that showed off GPT-4′s capabilities. Brockman demonstrated how the system could quickly come up with the proper income tax deduction after being fed reams of tax code — something he couldn’t figure out himself, according to a report by the news agency Associated Press.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“It’s not perfect, but neither are you. And together it’s this amplifying tool that lets you just reach new heights,” Brockman added.&nbsp;</p>

"This has significant consequences, since the best quantum algorithms that we know for running useful applications require the error rates of our qubits to be far lower than we have today. To bridge this gap, we will need quantum error correction," he further explained.</p>

<p>For useful calculations, error rates need to be low. "By encoding larger numbers of physical qubits on our quantum processor into one logical qubit, we hope to reduce the error rates to enable useful quantum algorithms," the Google CEO underlined.&nbsp; This is the first time, according to Google, that anyone has achieved this experimental milestone of scaling a logical qubit, which is formed when quantum error correction protects information by encoding it across multiple physical qubits.</p>

<p>"All roles above the senior vice president level will witness ‘very significant' reduction in their annual bonus. For senior roles, the compensation is linked to company performance," Pichai stated during the town hall, according to reports.</p>

<p>Pichai also did not specify the percentage of salary cut which will happen and for how long will it remain so. A few weeks before the layoffs, Pichai had received a major salary hike.</p>

<p>At that time, Pichai was recognised by Google’s parent company Alphabet for his "strong performance" as CEO. Pichai, who received an equity award every three years, was awarded two tranches of PSUs, each with a target value of $63 million and was also gifted Alphabet's restricted stock units worth $84 million.</p>

<p>As per a filing from 2020, the annual salary of Pichai was disclosed by Google to be $2 million. IIFL Hurun India Rich List 2022, had stated that there was a decline in the total net worth of the Google CEO by 20 per cent, which currently stands at INR 5,300 crore.</p>

<p>Cost-cutting, efficiency, and macroeconomics seem to be the keywords that Google CEO Sundar Pichai has been using rather frequently in front of his employees for the majority of this quarter. Now, at a companywide meeting this week, Pichai told employees not to 'equate fun with money'.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Reportedly, during the meeting, which turned heated at times according to sources, Pichai was asked by an employee as to why the company, despite recording profits and high cash reserves was slashing travel budgets, allowances, and other perks.</p>

<p>“I remember when Google was small and scrappy. Fun didn’t always...we shouldn’t always equate fun with money. I think you can walk into a hard-working startup and people may be having fun and it shouldn’t always equate to money,” said Pichai in response.</p>

<p>Talking about the uncertainty in macroeconomics, the Google boss further added, “How do I say it? Look, I hope all of you are reading the news, externally. The fact that you know, we are being a bit more responsible through one of the toughest macroeconomic conditions underway in the past decade, I think it’s important that as a company, we pull together to get through moments like this.”</p>

<p>It is pertinent to note that Pichai's statements come in the backdrop of Alphabet Inc., Google's parent company, reporting a second successive quarter of weaker-than-expected earnings and revenue in July.&nbsp;</p>

<p>As reported by WION, earlier this month as well, Pichai talked about the company taking a more conservative approach when it came to hiring and simultaneously increasing the efficiency of the employees as the macroeconomics remained uncertain.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>
