Ajax Amsterdam took a massive stride towards a first Champions League final for 23 years as Donny van de Beek's early goal earned a 1-0 win at Tottenham Hotspur in the first leg of their semi-final on Tuesday.

Erik ten Hag's youthful Ajax side, featuring several players polished in the Dutch club's famed academy, were too energetic for a laboured Spurs team who hardly got a kick in the opening 25 minutes of their first European Cup semi-final for 57 years.

Such was Ajax's domination in the early stages that they could already have virtually sealed a place in the final -- but they had to be content with Van de Beek's 15th-minute goal.

Tottenham badly missed injured striker Harry Kane and the suspended Son Heung-min and managed only one shot on target.

Had David Neres's shot not bounced back off the base of the post late on it would have been an even more calamitous night for Mauricio Pochettino's struggling side.

As it stands they will go to Amsterdam next week with a glimmer of hope, even if only one club have ever reached the final by overturning a first-leg home loss.

"The away goal was the most important. Unfortunately, Neres hit the upright. If that had gone in, it would have been even better," Ajax's 19-year-old skipper Matthijs de Ligt said.

"But we must be satisfied with the 1-0 score. It was a tough battle but we were fortunately very sharp tonight."

Christian Eriksen, one of four former Ajax players in Tottenham's team, summed up the home mood.

West Ham inflict first defeat on Spurs at new home

Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino said it was unfair their Champions League semi-final opponents Ajax Amsterdam had the weekend off to prepare for the tie while the Premier League side plays a crucial derby game against West Ham United.

Ajax were set to play De Graafschap on April 28, two days before the first leg in London, leading the Dutch football association to reschedule all of this weekend's top-flight games to May 15 so league leaders Ajax had enough rest between games.

"I know the Premier League and FA helped us prepare for the semi-final but it's true, the Premier League is completely different to the Dutch league," Pochettino told reporters on Friday. "Football in Europe is completely different to England.

"The reality is they are going to have more time to prepare and avoid risk. When you play Saturday and Tuesday, and the game on Saturday is a derby, playing for big things, the concentration and effort is massive. You can have some problems.

"But it's not a complaint. The fact is I think it's not fair. If it was the opposite where we had one week to prepare for the semi-final and Ajax play Saturday, I would think the same, that it's not fair for them."

Tottenham will look to preserve their 100 per cent record at their new stadium when West Ham visit on Saturday in the league and Pochettino said their focus was now on bouncing back from their 1-0 loss at Manchester City last weekend.

The result nearly cost them third place before their top four rivals failed to take advantage. Tottenham are currently three points ahead of Chelsea and four ahead of Arsenal in the race for Champions League qualification spots.

"For us, after Manchester City, we are thinking about trying to beat West Ham," Pochettino said. "When you compete three days beforehand in a game you must win if you want to be in the top four, and you are fighting for big things.

"And then it's an emotional game because it's against West Ham. The effort (required) is massive. That's why we are excited and so motivated. It's a massive challenge for us."

Tottenham will look to preserve their 100 per cent record at their new stadium when West Ham visit on Saturday in the league and Pochettino said their focus was now on bouncing back from their 1-0 loss at Manchester City last weekend. The result nearly cost them third place before their top four rivals failed to take advantage. "For us, after Manchester City, we are thinking about trying to beat West Ham," Pochettino said. The effort (required) is massive. That's why we are excited and so motivated. It's a massive challenge for us." The 62,000-seat arena, close to the north London club's old home of White Hart Lane, has been beset by delays and reports of spiralling costs which, according to some estimates, have reached £1 billion ($1.32 billion, 1.17 billion euros).

But Sunday saw it play host to a maiden test event, with Tottenham's Under-18 side beating their Southampton counterparts 3-1.

Club officials hope Spurs' senior team will play their first match at the new ground, a Premier League fixture against Crystal Palace, on April 3.&nbsp;

Borussia Dortmund are going into their Champions League Round-of-16 the second leg at home against Tottenham Hotspur on Tuesday with a clear disadvantage after a 3-0 first-leg loss but the Germans will attempt a major upset, said captain Marco Reus.

Bundesliga leaders Dortmund have managed just one win in their last five league games, while also losing to Tottenham in London and being eliminated by Werder Bremen in the German Cup.

Reus, injured in the game against Werder in early February, returned on Friday but could do nothing to avert their second league loss of the season, 2-1 at Augsburg.

On Monday, he sounded confident that his team could still turn things around against the English side if they hit top form on the night.

"I think this stadium (in Dortmund) has seen its share of games where history was written," Reus told a news conference. "We can also do it. But we need a top performance and to score the goals at the right time. I think we are in a position to achieve the impossible."
