A Space Force ship that went on a secret mission is back after carrying out mysterious tests in orbit. The Boeing-made X-37B vessel spent 434 days in orbit after being quietly launched by SpaceX in 2023 from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida. It landed at Vandenberg Space Force Base in California on Friday morning.
The US Space Force released a statement, saying that it landed the unmanned spaceplane to exercise its rapid ability to launch and recover its systems across multiple sites. The X-37B was on Mission 7, and this was the first time it was launched on a SpaceX Falcon Heavy Rocket to a Highly Elliptical Orbit.
“Mission 7 broke new ground by showcasing the X-37B’s ability to flexibly accomplish its test and experimentation objectives across orbital regimens,” Chief of Space Operations Gen. Chance Saltzman said.

“The successful execution of the aerobreaking manoeuvre underscores the US Space Force’s commitment to pushing the bounds of novel space operation in a safe and responsible manner,” he added.
While in orbit, the spaceplane conducted several tests and experiments aimed at demonstrating the X-37B’s robust manoeuvre capability. The agency is working to create a versatile, reusable, and sustainable fleet for future projects.

Space Force trying to learn about space environment

The Space Force used the spaceplane to learn more about the space environment. It tested space domain awareness technology experiments while in orbit, which will help USSF conduct space operations at a time when the region is seeing a rise in the number of stakeholders.
The statement further informed that Mission 7 successfully performed its deorbit and landing procedures.
Calling the mission a significant milestone, X-37B Program Director, Lt. Col. Blaine Stewart, said, "Mission 7’s operation in a new orbital regime, its novel aerobraking manoeuvre, and its testing of space domain awareness experiments have written an exciting new chapter in the X-37B program."

The United States Federal Aviation Administration grounded SpaceX’s Starship rocket after it exploded dramatically in its latest test flight.

US grounds SpaceX’s Starship after fiery mid-air explosion

The United States Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) grounded SpaceX's Starship and ordered an investigation into the spacecraft's disintegration during its latest test mission on Thursday. The incident occurred over the Caribbean, causing a fiery cascade of debris.
The rocket's upper stage dramatically broke up and disintegrated over the Caribbean after launching from Texas on Thursday, forcing airline flights to alter course to avoid falling debris.

What did the FAA say?

Authorities in the Turks and Caicos Islands diverted all flights from their airspace and warned residents not to touch fallen debris due to potential hazards.

The federal agency in a statement said, "The FAA is requiring SpaceX to perform a mishap investigation into the loss of the Starship vehicle during launch operations on Jan. 16."
SpaceX will need to identify any corrective actions, which the FAA will review before determining if the launch vehicle can return to flight. Alternatively, the company may seek an early return to flight by demonstrating sufficient safety measures and confirming the mishap posed no public risk.
The government of the Turks and Caicos Islands met with UK Space Agency experts and reiterated warnings to residents to avoid fallen debris. They advised residents to take photographs of the objects without touching them, emphasising that "Space debris remains the property of the spacecraft owner."
The FAA confirmed it had activated a "debris response area" to briefly slow aircraft outside the area where debris was falling, or stop aircraft from leaving their departure locations.
It added that several aircraft asked to divert due to low fuel levels while being held outside the affected area.

Musk expresses confidence despite concerns over safety

The incident raises new questions about both the safety of the rapidly increasing number of commercial space launches or at least the air traffic disruption being caused by them.

It also is the latest incident highlighting the conflicts that Elon Musk's new role in the Trump administration will bring. He will have the remit to recommend changes, and potentially budget cuts, to government agencies including the FAA. That tension could hamper investigations like the one announced Friday.
Musk, who is preparing to travel to Washington to participate in Trump's inauguration, expressed confidence even as of Thursday night that SpaceX would resolve questions about the explosion quickly and restart test flights.
"Nothing so far suggests pushing the next launch past next month," Musk wrote on his social media site, X.
Musk also made fun of the spectacle the explosion created, as the debris fell toward Turks and Caicos Islands. "Success is uncertain, but entertainment is guaranteed!" atop a video of the fiery debris falling toward Earth.

What is Starship?

Starship is the biggest, most powerful rocket ever built, and is key to Musk's ambitions of colonising Mars.
Thursday's uncrewed launch was Starship's seventh test mission, and the first involving a taller, upgraded version of the rocket.
The Starship upper stage, two metres (6.56 ft) taller than previous versions, was a "new generation ship with significant upgrades", SpaceX said before the test.
It was due to make a controlled splashdown in the Indian Ocean roughly an hour after its launch from Boca Chica, Texas.
The Starship test launch on Thursday came hours after the first flight of the Blue Origin New Glenn rocket system, backed by Amazon boss Jeff Bezos.
It was a huge step forward for Bezos and his company which has spent years getting to the point of sending a rocket into orbit.
Bezos and Musk both want to dominate the space vehicle market.

During the operation, the security forces recovered 29 weapons, including snipers, automatic rifles, pistols, grenades, country-made mortars, and other war-related items.
But what made this operation a national headline was the recovery of Starlink devices from the group.
It raised concerns about whether militants were using such equipment and posing a grave threat to India’s national security.
Responding to these reports and concerns, Musk, who owns the company that offers Starlink services, said “This is false.”
He cited the unavailability of satellite beams over India.

Brussels, Belgium

The European Union has launched a €10 billionn (£8.3 billion) space programme called Iris2, aiming to build a network of 290 satellites to compete with Elon Musk’s Starlink. This ambitious project is designed to strengthen Europe’s control over its communications and offer secure connections for governments and military operations amidst rising cybersecurity threats.
“This is a big step towards Europe’s sovereignty and secure connectivity,” the EU said in a statement about the launch.

A ‘Mega Constellation’ for secure connections

Using advanced technology, Iris2 will provide a system equivalent to 1,000 satellites, operating in both medium Earth orbit and low Earth orbit. This will ensure widespread coverage for defence, internet services, TV, weather updates, and border surveillance across Europe.
Leading European companies like Airbus Defence and Space, Thales Alenia Space, and Telespazio will be key contributors to the project.

Geopolitical challenge

The Iris2 project aims to meet Europe’s long-term satellite needs, which have become more urgent due to events like Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and cyberattacks in Europe.

UK chooses to stay out

The UK, once part of the EU’s Galileo satellite programme, has opted not to join Iris2. EU officials confirmed that Britain has made no move to participate in the project, despite shared concerns about defence and cybersecurity.
“So far, we have not seen any interest from our UK partners,” an EU official said, responding to questions about potential UK involvement, even with Labour leader Keir Starmer’s promise to improve EU-UK relations.
Since Brexit, the UK has been working on its satellite efforts. In August, the UK launched its Tyche Earth-imaging military satellite, and another satellite, Juno, is planned for 2027 to enhance surveillance and intelligence capabilities.

Iris2 is the EU’s third major satellite programme, following Galileo and Copernicus. It reflects Europe’s growing focus on protecting its communication systems and reducing reliance on other global players.
The first government and commercial communications through Iris2 are expected to start by 2030. With this initiative, the EU is taking a firm step towards greater independence and improved cybersecurity in an increasingly competitive global tech arena.

Bezos was the object of Trump's criticisms though his first term had everything worked out as planned, Amazon's project Kuiper would have begun providing beta services to clients by now.

Kuiper aims to compete with Musk's dominating Starlink satellite internet service. On the contrary, Kuiper is now behind schedule.

Amazon is confronted with the possibility of a new White House administration beset by individuals with ties to Musk's SpaceX.

The first operational satellite launches from Kuiper have already been delayed twice in 2024.

Rocket producer United Launch Alliance's latest delay was due to the necessity of prioritising two missions for the US Space Force. The schedule is uncertain.

ULA — a joint venture of Boeing and Lockheed Martin — will not be able to complete those space force launches this year. This is because ULA is investigating a mishap on a flight in October.

In response to Trump's attacks on the Bezos-owned Washington Post during his first term in office, Amazon filed a lawsuit claiming that Trump had told the Pentagon to "screw Amazon" by excluding it from a bidding process.

Bezos lately has adopted a more accommodating stance. The Amazon founder made an unusual appearance on X after Trump's election to offer his congratulations to the newly elected president.

A representative for Amazon announced Thursday that the firm will be paying 1 million dollars to Trump's inaugural fund.

This is in addition to efforts of meta platforms and other digital companies that are hoping to foster favourable relationships with the new government by contributing to the festivities.

Billionaire Elon Musk's space giant SpaceX would launch a new mission – making its Starbase site a new Texas city, American media reported on Friday (Dec 13). On Thursday, SpaceX sent a letter to local officials requesting an election to turn what it calls Starbase — the South Texas site where SpaceX builds and launches its massive Starship rockets — into an incorporated city. Residents of the area known as Starbase submitted the petition, SpaceX said. The area is on the southern tip of Texas at Boca Chica Beach, near the Mexican border. 'Need the ability to grow Starbase as a community' In a letter addressed to Cameron County, Starbase's General Manager Kathryn Lueders said, "To continue growing the workforce necessary to rapidly develop and manufacture Starship, we need the ability to grow Starbase as a community. That is why we are requesting that Cameron County call an election to enable the incorporation of Starbase as the newest city in the Rio Grande Valley." Elon Musk had proposed the idea in 2021 when he wrote a social media post which said, "Creating the city of Starbase, Texas." 'Petition to be reviewed' Speaking to the news agency Associated Press, Cameron County official Eddie Treviño Jr said on Thursday that despite talks of incorporating a Starbase in 2021, this was the first time a petition had been officially filed. “Our legal and elections administration will review the petition, see whether or not it complied with all of the statutory requirements and then we’ll go from there,” Treviño Jr added. Multiple media reports are speculating that the cause could be Musk's assertive and mercurial personality, and his claiming of credit for Trump's shock victory against Democrat Kamala Harris in the November 5 election.

The apparent coldness - or even anxiety- of Trump at the Tuesday SpaceX event comes amid Musk's reported arguments with other members of the Trump transition team.

Earlier, US media reports said that there was an argument at Trump's Mar-a-Lago residence in Florida between Musk and Boris Epshteyn, a member of the Trump legal team.

Musk reportedly complained that Epshteyn was pushing people who were not qualified for jobs in the incoming Trump administration.

Elon Musk and Donald Trump - Is the honeymoon over already? Body language changes raise eyebrows

SpaceX flew its latest test flight of its Starship mega-rocket on Tuesday, with President-elect Donald Trump joining Elon Musk to witness the spectacle firsthand in the latest sign of their ever-closer ties. But the Republican leader was deprived of the chance to see the descending first stage caught in the launch tower's "chopstick" arms, an engineering marvel demonstrated by the company last month and one he personally lauded during his election victory speech. Instead, the massive Super Heavy booster made a more subdued splashdown in the Gulf of Mexico. Company representatives cited unmet technical criteria, dampening the triumph of an event attended by an array of Trump-world figures. Space X founder and CEO Musk has been a constant presence at Trump's side since the incoming president's election victory, joining him at a meeting with Argentina's President Javier Milei and even at a UFC bout. Trump's decision to travel to Musk's home turf was the latest sign of the burgeoning bond between the billionaire duo, which has raised questions over possible conflicts of interest given SpaceX's lucrative contracts with NASA and the Pentagon. Also read | What Trump’s victory means for future of Big Tech Flying in from his Mar-a-Lago home, Trump greeted Musk warmly on Tuesday afternoon, sporting a red MAGA hat as the pair headed off to watch from the control tower of the company's Starbase in Boca Chica, Texas, where Starship blasted off at 4:00 pm (2200 GMT). Tuesday's launch marked the quickest turnaround between test flights for the world's most powerful rocket, a gleaming, 400-foot-tall (121-meter) stainless steel colossus central to Musk's ambition of colonizing Mars and making humanity a multi-planetary species. Musk aims to launch the first uncrewed missions to the Red Planet as early as 2026, coinciding with the next "Mars transfer window" -- a period when the journey between Earth and Mars is at its shortest. NASA is also counting on a specialized version of Starship to ferry astronauts to the lunar surface later this decade under its Artemis program. Stuffed banana Flight six of Starship was seen as a test of whether SpaceX's first booster catch was pure precision or relied on a stroke of luck after Musk -- perhaps inadvertently -- disclosed how close the last flight came to disaster. In a clip posted to X showcasing his gaming chops in "Diablo IV," sharp-eared fans caught an employee briefing him that the Super Heavy booster was "one second away" from a system failure that could have spelt catastrophe. Starship's upper stage meanwhile made a partial orbit of Earth, reentered the atmosphere and splashed down in the Indian Ocean around an hour and five minutes after launch. SpaceX employees erupted in cheers during a live feed watched by nearly nine million viewers, as the upper stage executed a near-vertical daylight splashdown off Australia's northwest coast, sending up a towering plume of water vapour before tipping over. Also read | Russia-Ukraine war | Amid shifting political winds Zelensky warns Ukraine 'will lose' without US aid Key milestones included reigniting Starship's Raptor engines for the first time in space and trialling new heat shield materials. The flight also carried Starship's first-ever payload, a stuffed banana, and served as a swan song for the current generation of Starship prototypes. With twice the thrust of the Saturn V rockets that powered Apollo missions, Starship is the most powerful rocket ever built. Musk has already teased that its successor, Starship V3, will be "3X more powerful" and could take flight in about a year. The flight comes as Musk is riding high on Trump's November 5 White House win, having campaigned extensively for the returning Republican leader, as well as donating staggering sums from his own fortune to the cause. His loyalty has paid off. Musk has been tapped to co-lead a new "Department of Government Efficiency" -- or DOGE, a cheeky nod to the meme-based cryptocurrency Musk loves to promote. That in turn has led to concerns Musk could engage in "self-dealing" as the CEO is poised to straddle the line between government insider and corporate titan. SpaceX fails to repeat Starship booster catch, as Trump watches on

SpaceX flew its latest test flight of its starship Mega Rocket and to witness the spectacle firsthand, U.S. President-elect, Donald Trump joined his close ally Elon Musk in Texas. This is the latest sign of their ever-closer ties.

Donald Trump-Elon Musk Bonhomie

In a notable demonstration of his ongoing relationship with tech entrepreneur Elon Musk, former U.S. President Donald Trump is preparing to attend SpaceX's upcoming rocket launch in Brownsville, Texas, signalling continued high-profile engagement with the aerospace industry.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has already issued temporary flight restrictions over Brownsville, a procedural step typically preceding a high-profile visit, confirming the anticipated attendance of the former president at the SpaceX test launch.

This launch represents SpaceX's sixth test flight for Starship, the company's cutting-edge rocket system central to Musk's ambitious vision of human and cargo transportation to Mars. The 233-foot-tall "Super Heavy" booster will attempt a novel reusability technique involving large arms attached to the launch tower, catching the rocket's first stage approximately 10 minutes after liftoff.

The event underscores the deep personal and professional connection between Trump and Musk, who have developed a close friendship over recent years. Musk has been a frequent guest at Trump's Mar-a-Lago club in Palm Beach and has emerged as a significant adviser to the former president.

NASA's strategic plans add further intrigue to the launch, as the space agency intends to utilise Starship for lunar missions under the Artemis program. This collaboration is expected to advance Mars exploration efforts and potentially favour SpaceX's cosmic ambitions during potential future Trump administration initiatives.

Simultaneously, flight restrictions over Trump's oceanfront Florida property will be temporarily lifted during the same timeframe, allowing for potential travel arrangements related to the launch.

While the Trump transition team has not officially commented on the president-elect's plans, the source familiar with the trip confirmed the anticipated attendance, highlighting the continued intersection of politics, technology, and space exploration.

The SpaceX Starship represents a pivotal technological breakthrough in space transportation, embodying Musk's long-standing goal of making human interplanetary travel a realistic prospect. The rocket's design incorporates advanced reusability features, potentially revolutionising space travel economics and feasibility.

Trump's presence at the launch symbolises more than mere technological curiosity. It reflects a broader narrative of political figures engaging directly with cutting-edge technological developments, particularly in the aerospace and renewable energy sectors.

The launch also comes at a critical moment for SpaceX, which has been pushing the boundaries of rocket technology and commercial space exploration. Previous Starship test flights have been marked by both spectacular successes and notable challenges, making each subsequent launch a significant event in the aerospace community.

Musk's relationship with Trump has been characterised by mutual admiration and strategic collaboration, transcending traditional political boundaries. Their interaction represents a unique nexus of technological innovation, entrepreneurial vision, and political influence.
