North Korea has released a revised map that omits South Korea's territory, instead using a term that signifies a significant policy shift: viewing the South as a distinct and adversarial nation, Eurasia Review reported.
North Korean leader Kim Jong Un pledged last year to amend the constitution to declare South Korea the &ldquo;primary and immutable enemy,&rdquo; abandoning the established notion of the South being a partner in reconciliation and reunification. Kim added that he no longer saw South Koreans as the same ethnic people. The new map&nbsp;further reinforces the North Korean leader&rsquo;s break from the long-held goal of unification.
However, due to a lack of any official report or announcement in this respect, it remains unclear whether North Korea has formally amended its constitution.

A recently surfaced map from North Korea suggests a significant shift in the country's stance towards South Korea. The map, dated April 2024, refers to South Korea as 'Hanguk', implying recognition of it as a separate nation.&nbsp;
This marks a departure from North Korea's previous terminology, 'Namjoson', which implied South Korea was part of a unified Korea. The change comes after Kim Jong-un's announcement in 2023, indicating a potential shift in North Korea's reunification policy.&nbsp;

While the map's authenticity is unverified, a Seoul-based North Korean defector believes it to be genuine.&nbsp;
As per reports, an image purportedly showing the new map was posted on the social media app RedNote (Xiaohongshu). The reports further add that the map was sourced from a North Korean map publisher.
The new map also leaves South Korean territory blank, in contrast to the 2012 and 2018 editions, which included details of administrative divisions for the South.
Previous versions of the map included notable geographical details about South Korea, such as its southernmost and easternmost points, as well as the dimensions of the Korean Peninsula. However, these details have been completely removed from the latest version of the map.

South Korea on Thursday (Feb 6) ordered all the airports nationwide to install bird detection systems after the devastating Jeju Air crash that claimed 179 lives.
On December 29, a Boeing 737-800 airplane, en route from Thailand to Muan in southwest South Korea, exploded upon landing after colliding with a concrete barrier at Muan airport. The crash marked the worst aviation disaster in the nation's history. &nbsp;
<h2>Bird detection radars</h2>
"All airports will be equipped with at least one thermal imaging camera," said the South Korean Ministry of Land in a statement, adding that they aim to begin the rollout next year.

"Bird detection radars will be installed at all airports to enhance early detection of distant birds and improve response capabilities for aircraft," said the ministry.
These systems will provide air traffic controllers with real-time data on bird sizes and movement paths to warn pilots and improve response capabilities. Additionally, airports will deploy mobile sonic devices to deter medium and large birds.
The government also plans to "establish legal basis" to regulate and relocate facilities that attract birds, such as food waste processing centres and orchards, to areas further away from airports. &nbsp;

<h2>But why bird detection systems?</h2>
As per reports, in the moments leading up to the tragic crash, the pilot of the plane had warned of a bird strike, due to which he had aborted an initial landing attempt. The fatal crash occurred during a second landing attempt when the plane's landing gear failed to deploy.&nbsp;

North Korea has carried out its first weapons test since the inauguration of US President Donald Trump on 20 January. The test involved what Pyongyang described as "strategic" cruise missiles, a term often associated with nuclear-capable weaponry. The move comes as North Korea criticised joint military exercises conducted by the United States and South Korea.

According to the state-run Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), leader Kim Jong Un oversaw the test, which took place on Saturday (Jan 25). Kim referred to the underwater-to-surface strategic cruise missile system as part of the country's &ldquo;war deterrence means&rdquo; and added that it is being &ldquo;perfected more thoroughly.&rdquo;
<h2>'No negative impact' on the security of neighbouring countries</h2>
The missiles reportedly flew along elliptical and figure-eight flight paths for over two hours, covering a distance of 1,500 kilometres. KCNA noted that the missiles &ldquo;precisely&rdquo; hit their targets and stressed that the test had &ldquo;no negative impact&rdquo; on the security of neighbouring countries.

<h2>Yoon's arrest</h2>
Yoon has been held in a detention centre since Wednesday night after officials apprehended him at his residence, a dramatic arrest that saw police scale the walls to storm his "fortress".
Authorities are investigating whether his brief attempt to impose martial law on December 3 amounted to insurrection&mdash;a charge punishable by life imprisonment or, in extreme cases, the death penalty. The parliament swiftly overturned the martial law declaration, following which Yoon was impeached.
Yoon's team claims that the arrest warrant against him is illegal. They have filed a complaint against the CIO chief and some police officials over the warrant against the suspended president.
