South Korean government Saturday (Jan 11) said in a statement that critical data was missing from black boxes of the Jeju Air plane that crashed at Muan International Airport on December 29, leading to the loss of 179 lives. The transport Ministry said that flight data and voice recorders mysteriously stopped working just four minutes prior to the crash that has been blamed on a bird strike.
According to media reports, the pilots had told air traffic control about the alleged bird hit four minutes before the crash. The transport ministry said the black boxes were initially examined in South Korea but were later transferred to a US National Transportation Safety Board laboratory when investigators found the data missing.

Park&rsquo;s decision came just hours before he was scheduled to appear for police questioning. He faces allegations of obstructing the Corruption Investigation Office for High-Ranking Officials (CIO) in its attempt to execute a court-issued warrant to arrest President Yoon. Yoon is being investigated on charges of insurrection over his brief imposition of martial law on 3 December.
<h2>'Investigation should proceed in a manner befitting the president'</h2>
Speaking to the media before his questioning, Park said, &ldquo;I believe many people must be deeply concerned about the current situation, whether government agencies are clashing and confronting each other.&rdquo;&nbsp;&nbsp;
&ldquo;There should be no physical clashes and bloodshed under any circumstances,&rdquo; he added.

Park also said that the investigation should be conducted appropriately. &ldquo;I think the investigation should proceed in a manner befitting the status of a sitting president,&rdquo; he added as he entered the Joint Investigation Headquarters in western Seoul.
<h2>Yoon's refusal to cooperate with CIO&rsquo;s investigation</h2>
President Yoon has declined to cooperate with the CIO&rsquo;s investigation, including summonses for questioning and the execution of an arrest warrant. His legal team argues that the CIO lacks the authority to investigate charges of insurrection, which relate to the martial law incident.

The CIO obtained a second arrest warrant for Yoon this week after the initial warrant expired on Monday. The situation has drawn hundreds of Yoon&rsquo;s supporters to his residence, with many braving freezing temperatures to show their support. Meanwhile, rival protestors are demanding Yoon&rsquo;s immediate arrest.
If arrested, Yoon would become the first sitting South Korean president to be arrested. However, his legal team has said they will not comply with the new warrant. Meanwhile, the CIO has pledged to &ldquo;prepare thoroughly&rdquo; for another attempt to carry out the arrest.

South Korea political crisis: Impeached President Yoon's security chief resigns amid martial law probe

Adding to the troubles for the impeached president Yoon Suk Yeol, a South Korean university has concluded that First Lady Kim Keon-Hee plagiarized her master's thesis. The Sookmyung Women's University had launched a review in 2022 after Kim was accused of falsifying the dissertation she had submitted to the university's Graduate School of Education in 1999 to pursue a master's course. South Korea: Impeached President faces scrutiny over wife's degree

The stage is set for another mega clash between the Presidential Security Service of impeached South Korea leader Yoon Suk Yeol and the law enforcement agents. The Corruption Investigation Office (CIO) officials have vowed to make another &lsquo;forceful&rsquo; effort to detain the impeached leader following the last week&rsquo;s failed attempt. The agency also warned that it could even detain members of the security service for obstructing the execution of a new detention warrant.
Police said they were open to considering &ldquo;all available options&rdquo; to bring Yoon into custody and haven&rsquo;t publicly dismissed the possibility of deploying SWAT teams.
Notably, the Seoul Western District Court issued a fresh detention warrant against Yoon Tuesday (Jan 7).
Yoon&rsquo;s lawyers on Wednesday challenged the legitimacy of the warrant, saying the anti-corruption agency CIO lacks legal authority to investigate rebellion charges or order police to detain suspects.

Yoon Kap-keun, a lawyer from Yoon&rsquo;s legal team, also urged the CIO to either indict the president or seek a formal arrest warrant. This process will require a court hearing, and the lawyer didn&rsquo;t give a clear answer whether the president would appear in the courts. "Regarding the execution of a warrant to detain and the investigation, we urge the Corruption Investigation Office for High-ranking Officials (CIO) to either indict or seek an arrest warrant," the lawyer said.
<h2>Preparation by Presidential Security Service</h2>
As the CIO geared up for making another attempt to detain the president, officials from the president&rsquo;s security service fortified Yoon's compound with barbed wire and rows of tightly placed vehicles blocking the path to his residence.
Opposition Democratic Party has criticised Yoon&rsquo;s lawyers for attempting to stall Yoon&rsquo;s arrest.
Yoon was stripped of his presidential powers on December 14 after an opposition-dominated assembly voted to impeach him. Now, the matter is pending with the Constitutional Court for further deliberations.

National Assembly rejects special probe bills targeting Yoon, first lady
South Korean National Assembly Wednesday rejected two special counsel bills targeting the impeached president and the first lady.
The first bill sought the designation of special prosecutors to look into insurrection charges linked to Yoon&rsquo;s failed martial law bid. South Korea: Impeached Prez Yoon’s legal team says willing to comply with warrant ‘only if...’

Hundreds of supporters of South Korea's impeached President Yoon Suk Yeol rallied outside his home on Wednesday in a bid to protect him as investigators prepared a fresh arrest attempt.
Yoon has refused questioning and resisted arrest after his bungled December 3 martial law decree plunged South Korea into its worst political crisis in decades.
Investigators secured a new arrest warrant Tuesday after an initial seven-day order expired. Several hundred members of his base rushed to the conservative leader's house in central Seoul in response, braving sub-zero temperatures.
"A large number of people are coming out to join us. Despite the cold weather, many stayed up all night last night, braving the chill," Lee Hye-sook, a 57-year-old Yoon supporter, told AFP outside his residence.

"Witnessing their resilience against the wind and cold, I am confident that President Yoon Suk Yeol will return, and we will prevail."
Some supporters left flowers outside and ribbons with the Trump-style slogan "Make Korea Great Again!", while others waved American flags at the gates of the compound from where the suspended leader has resisted arrest.
You Se-ryung, a 46-year-old YouTuber camped outside, said key security ally the United States should intervene and "help" South Korea. Many of Yoon's supporters have adopted slogans used by US president-elect Donald Trump.
"Even if President Yoon Suk Yeol returns, whether or not the impeachment is overturned, I don't think this issue can be resolved within South Korea. That's why I brought out a Trump flag today," he told AFP.

Yoon's legal team said on Wednesday he remains inside his residential compound after investigators cast doubt on his whereabouts a day earlier.
"Last night, I personally visited the official residence, met the president there, and left," said Yoon's lawyer Yoon Kap-keun, who is unrelated.
The Corruption Investigation Office (CIO), which is leading the probe into the president, has kept secret the duration of the second warrant it requested after an initial seven-day document expired on Monday.
Yoon would become the first sitting South Korean president to be arrested if investigators were able to detain him.

However, they would only have 48 hours to request another arrest warrant in order to keep him in detention or be forced to release him.
<h2>Barbed wire, barricades&nbsp;</h2>
An AFP journalist saw Yoon's guards walking behind rows of buses and locked entrance gates covered in barbed wire at the residential compound on Wednesday.&nbsp;
CIO chief Oh Dong-woon said on Tuesday the force would "prepare thoroughly" to make sure their second arrest attempt was successful.
South Korea's Constitutional Court has slated January 14 for the start of Yoon's impeachment trial, which would proceed in his absence if he does not attend.
His legal team said he planned to attend the trial at some stage and lawyer Yoon Kap-keun told reporters on Wednesday "The President's position... remains unchanged".
"Of course, issues related to security and safety must be resolved in advance," he said.

National Assembly Speaker Woo Won-shik said it was distressing to watch Yoon mobilise fa orce to stop his arrest because the "whole world" was watching.
"The president must no longer plunge the country into confusion and should engage in judicial procedures with a sense of responsibility," he wrote in a post on social media platform X.
Investigators are trying to work out how to again tackle an expected wall of security before that trial begins after being stopped by hundreds of Presidential Security Service (PSS) guards last week.
"The number of PSS personnel cannot be disclosed as it is confidential information," a service spokesperson told AFP.
A lawmaker from Yoon Suk Yeol's People Power Party, Yoon Sang-hyun, turned up with other MPs outside their leader's home on Wednesday to repudiate the warrant.
"I firmly believe that it is a clear violation of the law," he said.
The impeached Yoon is being investigated on charges of "insurrection" and, if formally arrested and convicted, faces prison or, at worst, the death penalty.&nbsp;
The Constitutional Court has up to 180 days from December 14, when it received the case, to determine whether to dismiss Yoon or restore his presidential powers.

South Korea's Constitutional Court has slated January 14 for the start of Yoon's impeachment trial, which would proceed in his absence if he does not attend. Hundreds protest in South Korea as Yoon faces second arrest attempt

South Korea's transport minister said on Tuesday he intends to step down, taking responsibility for the deadly crash of a Boeing jet operated by Jeju Air on December 29, 2024.
Jeju Air 7C2216, which departed the Thai capital of Bangkok for Muan in southwestern South Korea, belly-landed and overshot the regional airport's runway, exploding into flames after hitting an embankment.
"I feel heavy responsibility for this disaster," Park Sang-woo told a press briefing.

He said he would try to find the right time to resign after addressing the current situation.
The transport ministry also said it will swiftly improve the safety of airport landing systems that experts said contributed to the catastrophic accident that killed 179 people on board.
Air safety experts have said the embankment, designed to prop up the "localizer" antenna used to guide landings in poor visibility, was too rigid and too close to the end of the runway.
<h2>&lsquo;Safety measures were not sufficient&rsquo;</h2>
Joo Jong-wan, the deputy transport minister for civil aviation, acknowledged that safety measures were not sufficient when building the embankment but said they were done in line with regulations in Korea and overseas.

The police are investigating how the embankment was constructed, he said. The police last week raided Jeju Air and the operator of Muan International Airport as part of their investigation into the crash.
Feathers were found on one of the engines recovered from the crash scene, the lead investigator Lee Seung-yeol said, adding that video footage showed that there was a bird strike on one of the engines.
Two of the Korean investigators Monday left for the United States to recover and analyse a flight data recorder that was damaged during the crash with the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board.

The flight data recorder, along with a cockpit voice recorder, are the two black boxes that contain key information about the crash.
Lee said it will take three days to extract files from the flight data recorder, and another two days to do preliminary analysis of basic information such as whether one or two engines failed.
It remains unanswered why the aircraft did not deploy its landing gear and what led the pilot to apparently rush into a second attempt at landing after telling air traffic control the plane had suffered a bird strike and declaring an emergency.
Experts say bird strikes do not typically cause landing gear to malfunction.

South Korea's transport minister to resign over deadly plane crash

South Korean anti-graft investigators secured a new court-ordered arrest warrant Tuesday for impeached President Yoon Suk Yeol, whose failed martial law bid threw the country into turmoil.
The former star prosecutor has refused questioning three times after his bungled December 3 martial law decree plunged South Korea into its worst political crisis in decades.
As anti-graft officials and police got a fresh warrant from the same court that issued the first order, Yoon was believed to be holed up in his residence surrounded by hundreds of guards preventing his detention.
"The arrest warrant re-requested for the suspect Yoon was issued today in the afternoon," the Joint Investigation Headquarters said in a statement.&nbsp;

Seoul Western District Court declined to confirm when contacted by AFP.
The Corruption Investigation Office (CIO), which is leading the probe into the president, has kept secret the length of the second warrant it requested after an initial seven-day warrant expired at the end of Monday.
If investigators are able to detain Yoon, he would become the first sitting South Korean president to be arrested.

Yoon's legal team did not immediately respond to a request for comment late Tuesday.
But after news of the fresh warrant broke, Yoon supporters said they would descend on his residence in the capital Seoul to rally around the impeached leader.
"We just heard that the new warrant was issued by the court. We are heading to Yoon's residence right now. Those living in the countryside will join us in the early morning as well," Rhee Kang-san, 35, told AFP.
Opposition party lawmaker Youn Kun-young told local media Yoon's residence was "turning into a fortress", claiming guards were installing barbed wire and vehicle barricades.
<h2>'Liability'&nbsp;</h2>
The anti-graft officials have sought more time and help because of the difficulties they have faced, including being met by hundreds of security forces when they entered Yoon's presidential residence on Friday.

His lawyers have repeatedly said the initial warrant was "unlawful", pledging to take further legal action against it.&nbsp;
They have argued the CIO lacks the authority to investigate because insurrection is not included in the list of offences it can probe.
South Korea has found itself in uncharted territory regardless of the outcome of Yoon's case&mdash;its sitting president will either be arrested or he will have evaded court-ordered detention.
Experts said the chances of Yoon's arrest were rising.

"I assume that the arrest will happen. A number of conservative politicians already disowned Yoon -- to them now, he is more of a liability rather than an asset," Vladimir Tikhonov, professor of Korean studies at the University of Oslo, told AFP.
The new warrant has left those opposed to Yoon more positive that he will be brought to justice.
"We will all stand together in this fight. I truly hope for Yoon's arrest," said Bae Hoon, 46, who had stayed in front of Yoon's residence for two nights in frigid weather.
<h2>'Heartbroken'&nbsp;</h2>
CIO chief Oh Dong-woon apologised on Tuesday for the failed first arrest attempt, saying he was "heartbroken".
He also said he was unsure if Yoon was still inside the presidential residence.
"I am considering various possibilities," he said in response to a lawmaker when asked if Yoon had fled.
Yoon's presidential guards refused to budge during a six-hour standoff at his residence on Friday.
The CIO was set up less than four years ago and has fewer than 100 staff, who are yet to prosecute a single case.
South Korea's opposition Democratic Party told AFP on Monday it had submitted a legal complaint against acting president Choi Sang-mok for "dereliction of duty" after he failed to support Yoon's arrest as they requested.
South Korea's Constitutional Court has slated January 14 for the start of Yoon's impeachment trial, which would proceed in his absence if he does not attend.
Local media reported that he was likely to appear on the opening day, but Yoon's lawyer told AFP his appearance was still "undecided".
Former presidents Roh Moo-hyun and Park Geun-hye never appeared for their impeachment trials in 2004 and 2016-2017 respectively.
The court has up to 180 days from December 14, when the court received the case, to determine whether to dismiss Yoon or restore him as president.

The opposition Democratic Party has demanded the dissolution of the security service protecting Yoon. This comes after hundreds of Yoon’s guards and military personnel prevented investigators from arresting him, ultimately leading to officials abandoning the attempt over safety concerns. The Constitutional Court has set 14 January as the start date for Yoon’s impeachment trial. Although he is not required to attend, Yoon plans to appear at a “suitable session” during the trial’s five scheduled hearings, according to his lawyer. The Constitutional Court has 180 days to decide whether to dismiss Yoon from office or reinstate his authority. If the impeachment is upheld, South Korea will hold elections within 60 days. South Korean law enforcement officials Friday (Jan 3) halted attempts to arrest impeached president Yoon Suk-Yeol following a standoff with a military unit inside the presidential residence.
&ldquo;Regarding the execution of the arrest warrant today, it was determined that the execution was effectively impossible due to the ongoing standoff.&nbsp;Concern for the safety of personnel on-site led to the decision to halt the execution,&rdquo; said the Corruption Investigation Office (CIO) in a statement.

The CIO officials were confronted by security service members and a scuffle broke out.
The Presidential Security Service apparently refused to comply with the arrest warrant.

The direct cause of the crash was the malfunction of the landing gear, but the specific reason for this failure remained under further investigation.

At 8.57 am, air traffic control warned the pilot about bird activity in the area. Two minutes later, the pilot made a desperate Mayday call, declaring "bird strike, bird strike."
Pilot abandons landing attempt: Following the bird strike, the pilot of flight 7C2216 abandoned a landing attempt.&nbsp;
Air traffic control then proposed the pilot land in the opposite direction, which the pilot accepted, the report by AFP said.
At 9.02 am, the plane approached for a second landing attempt, seemingly without undercarriage. The aircraft struck the ground around 900 to 1,200 metres along the runway, which was 2,800 metres long.
Landing gear malfunctions: As an aircraft approaches for landing, the landing gear comes down way before the plane touches the ground.
However, in the case of flight 7C2216, the landing gear malfunctioned, which meant the pilot had to belly land.&nbsp;

Citing South Korean authorities, AFP reported that the landing gear might have been damaged due to the bird strike.
Plane slams into concrete barrier: At 9.03 am on December 29, the aircraft overran the runway and skidded into a large embankment made of dirt and concrete, and housing an instrument guidance system known as a localiser.
Video footage showed the plane smashing into the installation, which was located 250 metres past the end of the tarmac.
Questions have arisen over why the localiser was installed at the end of the runway, which experts pointed out posed danger in case an aircraft overran.&nbsp;
