An impressive 37 per cent decrease from 2022 was recorded here last year, with 78 rhinos poached and killed. No rhinos were poached in any other national park in the country.

This is the direct result of the authorities resorting to tightening the security and mandating new employees to take a lie detector test amid concerns that some workers might be in cahoots with poachers.

Law enforcement agencies also cracked down on poachers last year. At least 49 suspected poachers were detained by police in 2023 from the Hluhluwe–Imfolozi park.

As per the minister, at least 45 of the poachers were tried in courts. One of them was a former field ranger who was given a 10-year jail term for killing a rhino.

A blind golden mole that can swim through sand has been rediscovered in South Africa 87 years after it was declared extinct.

Scientists were able to locate the mole in sand dunes in the northwest of the country, following a two-year search relying on DNA samples. A sniffer dog was also put to work, along with a team of conservationists and geneticists from the Endangered Wildlife Trust (EWT).

<h2>When were these moles spotted last time?</h2>

The golden mole species had gone out of sight since 1936. About the size of a mouse or hamster, they were previously spotted in the small region of Port Nolloth in the Northern Cape.

Adding to the predicament, they are very hard to spot, owing to their over-sensitive ears, which can detect movement from above ground. Also, they live in largely inaccessible burrows and don’t leave tunnels behind them.

“Extracting DNA from soil is not without its challenges, but we have been honing our skills and refining our techniques – even before this project – and we were fairly confident that if De Winton’s golden mole was in the environment, we would be able to detect it by finding and sequencing its DNA,” said Samantha Mynhardt, conservation geneticist with the Endangered Wildlife Trust and Stellenbosch University, in a press release.

<h2>Extensive expedition efforts</h2>

The team of scientists was first able to detect the presence of the golden mole species in June 2021.

It was then that they surveyed up to 18kms of dunes a day, using a trained sniffer dog, while also relying on 100 soil samples from sites along the northwest coast where golden mole activity was detected.

In the latest twist arising from a sentence for contempt of court, Zuma was ordered to report back to jail, arriving at 6:00 am (0400 GMT) at a detention facility in the eastern town of Estcourt, the prison service said.

There, he was "admitted into the system" -- only to be let go in just over an hour, under a "remission process" to ease overcrowding in prison, according to the national commissioner of correctional services, Makgothi Thobakgale.&nbsp;

"Upon admission into the system he was subjected to administrative processes... He was then released," Thobakgale told a press conference in Pretoria.

Zuma, 81, was sentenced to 15 months in June 2021 after refusing to testify before a panel probing financial corruption and cronyism under his presidency.

He started serving his term in July 2021, sparking protests that descended into riots and looting that left more than 350 dead in the worst violence to hit South Africa since the advent of democracy.

But after just two months he was freed on medical parole for an undisclosed condition.

In November last year an appeals court found the release was illegally granted and ordered Zuma back to the Estcourt Correctional Centre in KwaZulu-Natal province.

South Africa's prison service, which had granted Zuma's conditional release, appealed the decision, but the bid was dismissed by the Constitutional Court last month.

<h2>Release</h2>

Thobakgale said the ex-president had been ordered to return to jail on Friday in compliance with the ruling.&nbsp;

But Zuma immediately benefited from a remission of non-violent offenders approved by President Cyril Ramaphosa, Justice Minister Ronald Lamola said.&nbsp;

Mzwanele Manyi, a spokesman for Zuma's foundation said the ex-president was "at home" and consulting with his legal team.

The decision was met with outrage by some opposition parties and scepticism from the press, with Thobakgale and Lamola facing a barrage of questions over the timing of the remission process, which began on Friday.&nbsp;

<h2>'Insult'</h2>

The Democratic Alliance (DA), South Africa's leading opposition party, said it would seek legal action, &nbsp;adding Zuma's release was a "monumental insult to each and every South African."

"This decision has nothing to do (with) overcrowding, and everything to do with preventing Zuma from facing accountability for his actions," said Glynnis Breytenbach, the DA's shadow justice minister.&nbsp;

"The precedent has been clearly set. If you are a senior ANC member, you will never be held accountable for your crimes".

South Africa's ex-president Zuma released an hour after reporting at prison

A strong explosion rocked a busy street in central Johannesburg Wednesday, leaving the ground ripped, cars overturned and at least 41 people injured. Some eyewitnesses said they heard a loud bang at the time of the blast and experienced tremors.

The cause of the explosion is not clear yet but South African authorities initially blamed underground gas pipelines.&nbsp;

Premier of the Gauteng province Panyaza Lesufi said in a statement it was a “miracle” that there were no fatalities.

He also added that authorities would release more information once certain things are confirmed. "They are of the view that there is something that needs to be confirmed before they can release additional information, but they are also trying very hard to check neighbouring buildings, and that is why they are asking us to leave the area because the impact at this present moment is not determined," Lesufi said.

The premier told the media that it was not clear whether or not nearby buildings faced the danger of collapsing.&nbsp;"It is indeed a bad situation, the damage is extensive, but it is very difficult to calculate now," he said. &nbsp;

People were being evacuated from the area but Lesufi could not immediately confirm how many people had been moved to safe locations.

Dozens of people sustained severe burn injuries. Earlier, authorities had said the severe nature of burns inflicted by the explosion was expected to result in a rise in the number of deaths.&nbsp;

Authorities have launched an investigation into the incident while South African Cyril Ramaphosa promised relief to the victims, Reuters reported.&nbsp;
