Every day, hundreds of people make the treacherous journey across volatile borders, to escape some of the problems they face in their home countries. Case in point, Somalia where thousands flee the war into neighbouring Kenya and Uganda. Now migrants in the Sahel are finding themselves in the same conundrum as the Somalis.

Somalia is facing one of the worst droughts in decades. Reports say over 34,000 Somalians will die due to hunger in the first six months of this year. Are countries sending enough aid? Is the media ignoring the crisis in Somalia? Molly Gambhir reports.

A new report by Somalia's health ministry, WHO and UNICEF stated that about 43,000 "excess deaths" might have occurred in Somalia from drought last year in comparison with 2017 and 2018 drought crisis.

It added that half of these deaths might have occurred among children under the age of 5.

To allow proactive intervention and prevent drought-related mortality, a model was also created from the same study for the first time. According to the forecasts, which covers January through June 2023, 135 people might die&nbsp;every day as a result of the crisis, with the total number of fatalities predicted to range between 18,100 and 34,200 over this time in these six months.&nbsp;

These projections imply that, despite the fact that hunger has been temporarily avoided, the crisis is still ongoing and has already surpassed the drought disaster of 2017–2018 in severity.

These numbers were obtained using a statistical model that predicted that, between January and December 2022, the crude death rate in Somalia went from 0.33 to 0.38 fatalities per 10,000 person-days. It also revealed that&nbsp;the rate among children under the age of five was nearly twice as high. By June 2023, the crude death rate is anticipated to be 0.42 deaths for every 10,000 person-days.

The London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and Imperial College London carried out the study, which was commissioned by UNICEF Regional Office and WHO country office of Somalia.&nbsp;

It gives retrospective estimates of mortality across Somalia from January to December 2022. The areas around the Bay, Bakool, and Banadir regions of south-central Somalia, which are currently the epicentre of the drought, were thought to have the greatest fatality rates.

Somalian Minister of Health Dr Ali Hadji Adam Abubakar said, “We continue to be concerned about the level and scale of the public health impact of this deepening and protracted food crisis in Somalia. At the same time, we are optimistic that if we can sustain our ongoing and scaled-up health and nutrition actions and humanitarian response to save lives and protect the health of our vulnerable, we can push back the risk of famine forever."

"Else, those vulnerable and marginalized will pay the price of this crisis with their lives. We, therefore, urge all our partners and donors to continue to support the health sector in building a resilient health system that works for everyone and not for the few. Building a healthier and happier world for all Somalis remains at the heart of our government," he added.&nbsp;

This is the worst drought in recent history in Somalia. It is continuing for five seasons in a row and has left five million people in severe food insecurity and nearly two million children at danger of malnutrition. In order to provide for 7.6 million people's needs in 2023, the UN will need to raise more than US$2.6 billion.

WHO Representative to Somalia and Head of Mission, Dr Mamunur Rahman Malik said, “We are racing against time to prevent deaths and save lives that are avoidable. We have seen, deaths and diseases thrive when hunger and food crises prolong. We will see more people dying from the disease than from hunger and malnutrition combined if we do not act now. The cost of our inaction will mean that children, women and other vulnerable people will pay with their lives while we hopelessly, helplessly witness the tragedy unfold.”

A helicopter operated by the African Union (AU) peace mission crashed in Somalia's Lower Shabelle region on Saturday (February 25), killing three people and injuring eight others. A statement by the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) on Sunday said 11 passengers, including officers from Somalia's army, were aboard the helicopter. The helicopter was on a joint familiarisation training mission for Casualty Evacuation (CASEVAC) drills.&nbsp;

"Regrettably, three of the eleven passengers on board lost their lives. Eight injured officers have been evacuated to Mogadishu for urgent medical attention. The SRCC and Head of ATMIS, Ambassador Mohamed El-Amine Souef, commiserates with the families of the deceased and wishes the injured officers quick recovery," the statement said.&nbsp;

The ATMIS has been helping Somalia in its war against the Al Shabaab. On Tuesday, ten people were killed in an attack in the capital city of Mogadishu claimed by the Al-Shabaab. Speaking to the news agency Reuters, a witness said the attack began with a car bomb blast followed by a gunfight that went on for hours at a house where several lawmakers were believed to be staying.&nbsp;

A suicide bomber first detonated a car outside the house and then Al Shabaab militants stormed in while firing guns. The gunfight between the group and security forces lasted for about eight hours. In a statement, Somalia's information ministry said that four soldiers and three civilians were injured before the fighting ended.&nbsp;

Somalia: Helicopter crashes in Lower Shabelle region, killing 3, injuring 8

Bilal al-Sudani, a significant regional commander for the Islamic State group, was killed in a US military raid in Somalia that was ordered by President Joe Biden, according to US authorities on Thursday (January 26).&nbsp;As per US sources, Sudani was killed during a gunfight when US forces entered a hilly labyrinth of caves in northern Somalia in an effort to arrest him, as reported by AFP.

There were about 10&nbsp;IS supporters from Sudan present at the location who were killed, but no Americans were hurt&nbsp;the firing, according to the officials.

"On January 25, on orders from the president, the US military conducted an assault operation in northern Somalia that resulted in the death of a number of ISIS members, including Bilal al-Sudani," Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said in a statement.

"Al-Sudani was responsible for fostering the growing presence of ISIS in Africa and for funding the group's operations worldwide, including in Afghanistan," Austin said.

al-Sudani&nbsp;handled the financing for IS branches not only in Africa but also for Islamic State Khorasan, the branch that controls Afghanistan, a US official stated under the condition of anonymity. He did this from his mountain base in northern Somalia.

"Sudani had a key operational and financial role with specialized skills which made him an important target for US counterterrorism action," the official said.

However, there was no US military present on the ground when the airstrike occurred, said Washington’s defence official.&nbsp; 
 
The operation was about 260 km away from the north of the capital Mogadishu where the Somali forces were attacked by at least 100 al-Shabaab fighters, said the statement. According to the Somali government and the militant group, at least seven soldiers were killed after the al-Shabaab fighters stormed the Somali military base in Galcad, reported Reuters. The US Africa Command, which is the American government’s presence on the continent, also said no civilians were injured or killed due to the remote location at which the strike occurred but three vehicles were destroyed.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, a statement by Somalia’s Information Ministry said their soldiers had killed at least 100 fighters and destroyed five gun-mounted pick-up vehicles known as technicals, said a&nbsp;Reuters report. The militant group has been fighting since 2006 to topple the country’s government. Last year, as a part of the ongoing support by US President Joe Biden’s administration, Washington approved Pentagon’s request to redeploy troops in the region to counter the militant group.&nbsp;

So far, the US forces have conducted several strikes in Somalia and killed many members of al-Shabaab. The last one took place in December near the Somalian city of Cadale which resulted in the death of at least six al-Shabaab militants.&nbsp;

Somalia’s government has announced a “people’s uprising” as it seeks to pressure Al-Shabab from all angles, including financial ones. In what is being called “total war” by the government of president Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, many across the Horn of Africa nation are being encouraged to stand up to the Al-Shabab extremists who have long embedded in Somali society, exploiting clan divisions and extorting millions of dollars a year from businesses and farmers in their quest to impose an Islamic caliphate.

Eight people were killed in a roadside bombing in Central Somalia on Saturday (January 14) with the Al-Shabaab claiming responsibility for the attack. The blast occurred in Hiran district's Buloburde city. A local police commander Abdullahi Mohamud said the bomber detonated a car laden with explosives near an administrative building, a report by the news agency AFP said on Sunday. Mohamud said that five people were killed on the spot while three died overnight in a hospital. The police official further said the bomber had been planning to destroy Buloburde's main bridge before redirecting the attack to a civilian area.

According to witnesses, the blast damaged buildings and the main mosque in the city. "I saw the bodies of five people. Two were elders coming out of the mosque," Muhidin Sokorow, one of the witnesses told the news agency.&nbsp;

Two separate incidents were reported in Somalia for which the Al-Shabaab has claimed responsibility. Police officials said a car bomb detonated in Jalalaqsi, another town in Hiran, but only the attacker died. Another attack was foiled and the suspect, trying to flee a vehicle packed with explosives, was detained, the police added.&nbsp;

Somalia has witnessed several terror attacks in the past and the Al-Shabaab have been waging a bloody insurgency against the central government for 15 years. In recent months, the army and local militia have retaken swathes of territory in the centre of Somalia in an operation backed by US air strikes and a force from the African Union (AU). However, the insurgents have retaliated with bloody attacks.&nbsp;

On January 6, &nbsp;Al-Shabaab militants killed at least six people during a raid in Hilowle Gaab, a village in central Somalia they were pushed out of recently. The militants attacked the village during morning prayers at 5 am (0200 GMT) with car bombs. A spokesperson from the local militia told the news agency Reuters that a gunfight ensued during which the militants were repelled, adding the six casualties included soldiers and militiamen.

Two days before this raid, at least 35 people were killed, including eight members of a single family, and 40 more wounded in twin car bombings in the Mahas district in Hiran. <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/nine-killed-several-others-injured-in-car-bombings-in-central-somalia-549310">And on October 29 last year</a>, more than 100 people were killed in two car bombings in two car bombings in the capital city of Mogadishu.&nbsp;

Mohamud said that five people were killed on the spot while three died overnight in a hospital. The police official further said the bomber had been planning to destroy Buloburde's main bridge before redirecting the attack to a civilian area. According to witnesses, the blast damaged buildings and the main mosque in the city. "I saw the bodies of five people. Two were elders coming out of the mosque," Muhidin Sokorow, one of the witnesses told the news agency. The militants attacked the village during morning prayers at 5 am (0200 GMT) with car bombs. A spokesperson from the local militia told the news agency Reuters that a gunfight ensued during which the militants were repelled, adding the six casualties included soldiers and militiamen. Two days before this raid, at least 35 people were killed, including eight members of a single family, and 40 more wounded in twin car bombings in the Mahas district in Hiran. 21 hours after the attack started, a spokesperson for the Somali national police Sadik Dudishe told the press that "the clearance operation in the Villa Rose Hotel has ended."

As quoted by AFP Dudishe also said that the Jihadists have &nbsp;"killed eight civilians who stayed in the hotel," however he added that the "security forces succeeded in rescuing about 60 civilians" and that no one among the rescued civilians was wounded.

He added that one member of the security forces also died during the operation.

As per Reuters, the militants stormed the hotel, shooting and setting off explosives. In a statement released soon after the attack started the militants said that they were targeting the nearby presidential palace.

The attack has raised questions about how the militants were able to evade numerous checkpoints in the area and take over a hotel located so close to the President's residence.

At least 100 people have been killed and more than 300 injured in the twin car bomb explosions that rocked the capital city of&nbsp;Mogadishu,&nbsp;President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud said in a statement on Sunday.

According to local media reports,&nbsp;the two car bomb explosions targeted Somalia's education ministry building&nbsp;on Saturday afternoon.

"Two car bombs targeted the education ministry building along K5 street," an inhabitant was quoted as saying by Reuters.&nbsp;

A police officer guarding the ministry, who gave his name as Hassan, had initially told Reuters that he saw at least 12 bodies and more than 20 people wounded.

The visuals of the bomb blast have since gone viral on social media platforms and show the explosion cloud&nbsp;rising above the city.

President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, who visited the site, blamed the Islamist group al-Shabaab for the attack, which has yet to claim responsibility.&nbsp;

"Our people who were massacred ... included mothers with their children in their arms, fathers who had medical conditions, students who were sent to study, businessmen who were struggling with the lives of their families," Mohamud was quoted as saying.

The president said that the casualties could rise, adding that he has instructed the government to provide immediate medical assistance to the injured, some of whom were in serious condition.

There were 19 foreigners among those killed in the stampede. They were from Iran, Uzbekistan, China and Norway.

"The hotel where the explosion happened was near a school, so many students were injured."

Security forces killed three of the attackers and a fourth died in the bomb blast, Dhumal said.

Before the attack, a meeting was being held at the hotel to plan how to fight al Shabaab, Farah Mohamed, a security officer, told Reuters from Kismayu.

Mohamed Nur, a police captain, and Farah Ali, a shopkeeper in Kismayu, told Reuters the blast at the hotel preceded the gunfire.

Video footage from the Somali National Television posted on its Twitter account showed security personnel load one of the wounded into an ambulance.

Abdiasis Abu Musab, al Shabaab's military operation spokesperson, said the group was behind the attack, which he said had targeted Jubbaland region's administrators who work from the hotel.

Kismayu is the commercial capital of Jubbaland, a region of southern Somalia still partly controlled by al Shabaab. 
Al Shabaab was driven out of Kismayu in 2012.

The city's port had been a major source of revenue for the group from taxes, charcoal exports and levies on arms, and other illegal imports.

In 2019, a similar attack at another hotel in Kismayu killed at least 26 people.

Heatwaves will become so extreme in certain regions of the world within decades that human life there will be unsustainable, the United Nations and the Red Cross said Monday.

Heatwaves are predicted to "exceed human physiological and social limits" in the Sahel, the Horn of Africa and south and southwest Asia, with extreme events triggering "large-scale suffering and loss of life", the organisations said.

Heatwave catastrophes this year in countries like Somalia and Pakistan foreshadow a future with deadlier, more frequent, and more intense heat-related humanitarian emergencies, they warned in a joint report.

The UN's Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) released the report in advance of next month's UN's COP27 climate change summit in Egypt.

They said aggressive steps needed to be taken immediately to avert potentially recurrent heat disasters, listing steps that could mitigate the worst effects of extreme heat.

"There are clear limits beyond which people exposed to extreme heat and humidity cannot survive," the report said.

"There are also likely to be levels of extreme heat beyond which societies may find it practically impossible to deliver effective adaptation for all.

"On current trajectories, heatwaves could meet and exceed these physiological and social limits in the coming decades, including in regions such as the Sahel and south and southwest Asia."

It warned that the impact of this would be "large-scale suffering and loss of life, population movements and further entrenched inequality."

The combined effects of ageing, warming and urbanisation would cause a significant increase in the number of at-risk people in developing countries in the coming decades.

"Projected future death rates from extreme heat are staggeringly high and comparable in magnitude by the end of the century to all cancers or all infectious diseases and staggeringly unequal," the report said.

Agricultural workers, children, the elderly and pregnant and breastfeeding women are at higher risk of illness and death, the report claimed.

"As the climate crisis goes unchecked, extreme weather events, such as heatwaves and floods, are hitting the most vulnerable people the hardest," said UN humanitarian chief Martin Griffiths.

"Nowhere is the impact more brutally felt than in countries already reeling from hunger, conflict and poverty."

IFRC Secretary-General Jagan Chapagain urged countries at COP27 to invest in climate adaptation and mitigation in the regions most at risk.

OCHA and the IFRC suggested five main steps to help combat the impact of extreme heatwaves, including providing early information to help people and authorities react in time, and finding new ways of financing local-level action.

They also included humanitarian organisations testing more "thermally-appropriate" emergency shelter and "cooling centres", while getting communities to alter their development planning to take account of likely extreme heat impacts.
