At least 29 people were killed and more than 300,000 people were forced to flee their homes after Somalia was hit by one of the worst floods in decades, said the country’s National Disaster Management Agency, on Wednesday (Nov 8). Rainstorms have been hitting Somalia and its neighbouring Kenya and Ethiopia from the beginning of the month, triggering landslides and submerging villages and farms across the countries after they suffered the region’s worst drought in four decades.

The death toll from the truck bombing in central Somalia rose to 21, on Sunday (September 24) after emergency workers dug through rubble to recover more bodies. This comes a day after a suicide bomber drove a truck packed with explosives towards a security checkpoint.

The attack took place in the town of Beledweyne where the officials have also reported damage to nearby buildings.

It was not immediately clear who carried out the bombing and no group has claimed responsibility for the attack, as of Sunday. However, the Islamist group al Shabaab is known to frequently carry out bombings in the Horn of Africa country.

The Ugandan government said on Saturday (June 3) that 54 Ugandan peacekeepers were killed in an attack on a military base in Somalia last week by the militant group al Shabaab. According to a report by the news agency Reuters early Sunday, al-Shabaab militants targeted the base last Friday (May 26) in Bulamarer, around 130 kilometres southwest of Somalia's capital city Mogadishu. The base belonged to the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS). Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni said that the Uganda People's Defence Forces (UPDF) had since recaptured the base from the militant group. “Our soldiers demonstrated remarkable resilience and reorganised themselves, resulting in the recapture of the base by Tuesday,” President Museveni added. Last week, Museveni said that there were some Ugandan casualties but did not give further details about the attack on troops, who are serving in the ATMIS. ALSO READ | Al Shabaab militants attack officials' house in Somalia, 10 dead On May 26, the ATMIS said in a statement that al Shabaab hit the base using car and suicide bombers and that airborne reinforcement from the mission and its allies destroyed the militants' weaponry as they withdrew. The militant group also targeted an adjacent base belonging to the Somali military, an officer told Reuters from the Lower Shabelle region. Seventeen killed in clash between Somalia army, al Shabaab Just days after the attack on the ATMIS military base, al-Shabaab attacked another base in Masagawa on Tuesday (May 30), killing 17 people. Captain Abdullahi Mohamed, a military officer in Masagawa, confirmed the attack and said 12 al-Shabaab militants were killed, but he did not know how many troops were dead. On the other hand, Hussein Nur, a resident of Masagawa, told Reuters, "I have seen 17 dead people, including the attackers and the attacked. The fighting has moved into the forest. The town is calm now and under government control." On Twitter, the Somalia army said it had prevented an attack on the town itself, and killed al-Shabaab fighters, but did not say how many. Al Qaeda-linked al Shabaab has been fighting since 2006 to topple Somalia's central government and establish its own rule based on its strict interpretation of Islamic Sharia law. The group has launched attacks against hotels, military bases and government establishments despite a relatively successful government pushback. Somalia is facing one of the worst droughts in decades. Reports say over 34,000 Somalians will die due to hunger in the first six months of this year. Are countries sending enough aid? Is the media ignoring the crisis in Somalia? Molly Gambhir reports.

Gravitas: Somalia hit with drought & famine

A new report by Somalia's health ministry, WHO and UNICEF stated that about 43,000 "excess deaths" might have occurred in Somalia from drought last year in comparison with 2017 and 2018 drought crisis.

It added that half of these deaths might have occurred among children under the age of 5.

To allow proactive intervention and prevent drought-related mortality, a model was also created from the same study for the first time. According to the forecasts, which covers January through June 2023, 135 people might die every day as a result of the crisis, with the total number of fatalities predicted to range between 18,100 and 34,200 over this time in these six months.

These projections imply that, despite the fact that hunger has been temporarily avoided, the crisis is still ongoing and has already surpassed the drought disaster of 2017–2018 in severity.

These numbers were obtained using a statistical model that predicted that, between January and December 2022, the crude death rate in Somalia went from 0.33 to 0.38 fatalities per 10,000 person-days. It also revealed that the rate among children under the age of five was nearly twice as high. By June 2023, the crude death rate is anticipated to be 0.42 deaths for every 10,000 person-days.

The London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and Imperial College London carried out the study, which was commissioned by UNICEF Regional Office and WHO country office of Somalia.

It gives retrospective estimates of mortality across Somalia from January to December 2022. The areas around the Bay, Bakool, and Banadir regions of south-central Somalia, which are currently the epicentre of the drought, were thought to have the greatest fatality rates.

Somalian Minister of Health Dr Ali Hadji Adam Abubakar said, “We continue to be concerned about the level and scale of the public health impact of this deepening and protracted food crisis in Somalia. At the same time, we are optimistic that if we can sustain our ongoing and scaled-up health and nutrition actions and humanitarian response to save lives and protect the health of our vulnerable, we can push back the risk of famine forever."

"Else, those vulnerable and marginalized will pay the price of this crisis with their lives. We, therefore, urge all our partners and donors to continue to support the health sector in building a resilient health system that works for everyone and not for the few. Building a healthier and happier world for all Somalis remains at the heart of our government," he added.

This is the worst drought in recent history in Somalia. It is continuing for five seasons in a row and has left five million people in severe food insecurity and nearly two million children at danger of malnutrition. The cost of our inaction will mean that children, women and other vulnerable people will pay with their lives while we hopelessly, helplessly witness the tragedy unfold.”

The ATMIS has been helping Somalia in its war against the Al Shabaab. On Tuesday, ten people were killed in an attack in the capital city of Mogadishu claimed by the Al-Shabaab. Speaking to the news agency Reuters, a witness said the attack began with a car bomb blast followed by a gunfight that went on for hours at a house where several lawmakers were believed to be staying.

A suicide bomber first detonated a car outside the house and then Al Shabaab militants stormed in while firing guns. The gunfight between the group and security forces lasted for about eight hours. In a statement, Somalia's information ministry said that four soldiers and three civilians were injured before the fighting ended.

US military says strike in Somalia killed at least 30 members of militant group al-Shabaab

Somalia’s government has announced a “people’s uprising” as it seeks to pressure Al-Shabab from all angles, including financial ones. In what is being called “total war” by the government of president Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, many across the Horn of Africa nation are being encouraged to stand up to the Al-Shabab extremists who have long embedded in Somali society, exploiting clan divisions and extorting millions of dollars a year from businesses and farmers in their quest to impose an Islamic caliphate.

Eight people were killed in a roadside bombing in Central Somalia on Saturday (January 14) with the Al-Shabaab claiming responsibility for the attack. The blast occurred in Hiran district's Buloburde city. A local police commander Abdullahi Mohamud said the bomber detonated a car laden with explosives near an administrative building, a report by the news agency AFP said on Sunday. Mohamud said that five people were killed on the spot while three died overnight in a hospital. The police official further said the bomber had been planning to destroy Buloburde's main bridge before redirecting the attack to a civilian area.

According to witnesses, the blast damaged buildings and the main mosque in the city. "I saw the bodies of five people. Two were elders coming out of the mosque," Muhidin Sokorow, one of the witnesses told the news agency.

Two separate incidents were reported in Somalia for which the Al-Shabaab has claimed responsibility. Police officials said a car bomb detonated in Jalalaqsi, another town in Hiran, but only the attacker died. Another attack was foiled and the suspect, trying to flee a vehicle packed with explosives, was detained, the police added.

Somalia has witnessed several terror attacks in the past and the Al-Shabaab have been waging a bloody insurgency against the central government for 15 years. In recent months, the army and local militia have retaken swathes of territory in the centre of Somalia in an operation backed by US air strikes and a force from the African Union (AU). However, the insurgents have retaliated with bloody attacks.

A spokesperson from the local militia told the news agency Reuters that a gunfight ensued during which the militants were repelled, adding the six casualties included soldiers and militiamen.

Two days before this raid, at least 35 people were killed, including eight members of a single family, and 40 more wounded in twin car bombings in the Mahas district in Hiran. And on October 29 last year, more than 100 people were killed in two car bombings in two car bombings in the capital city of Mogadishu.

"Our people who were massacred ... included mothers with their children in their arms, fathers who had medical conditions, students who were sent to study, businessmen who were struggling with the lives of their families," Mohamud was quoted as saying. The president said that the casualties could rise, adding that he has instructed the government to provide immediate medical assistance to the injured, some of whom were in serious condition. A car bomb and shooting attack on a hotel in the Somali city of Kismayu killed nine people on Sunday before security forces ended the siege at the hotel and killed the attackers, a regional official said.

Gunfire erupted after an explosives-laden vehicle rammed into the gate of the port city's Tawakal Hotel.
The al Qaeda-linked al Shabaab militant group said it had carried out the attack.

"In the explosion, nine people including students and civilians were killed and 47 others were injured, some of them seriously," Yussuf Hussein Dhumal, Security Minister for Jubbaland, told Reuters.

"The hotel where the explosion happened was near a school, so many students were injured."

Security forces killed three of the attackers and a fourth died in the bomb blast, Dhumal said.

Before the attack, a meeting was being held at the hotel to plan how to fight al Shabaab, Farah Mohamed, a security officer, told Reuters from Kismayu.

Mohamed Nur, a police captain, and Farah Ali, a shopkeeper in Kismayu, told Reuters the blast at the hotel preceded the gunfire.

Video footage from the Somali National Television posted on its Twitter account showed security personnel load one of the wounded into an ambulance.

Abdiasis Abu Musab, al Shabaab's military operation spokesperson, said the group was behind the attack, which he said had targeted Jubbaland region's administrators who work from the hotel.

Kismayu is the commercial capital of Jubbaland, a region of southern Somalia still partly controlled by al Shabaab.
Al Shabaab was driven out of Kismayu in 2012.

The city's port had been a major source of revenue for the group from taxes, charcoal exports and levies on arms, and other illegal imports.

In 2019, a similar attack at another hotel in Kismayu killed at least 26 people.

The group is battling to topple Somalia's central government and impose its own rule based on a strict interpretation of Islamic Sharia law.

It has killed thousands of Somalis and hundreds of civilians across East Africa in a decade-long insurgency.

Heatwaves will become so extreme in certain regions of the world within decades that human life there will be unsustainable, the United Nations and the Red Cross said Monday.

Heatwaves are predicted to "exceed human physiological and social limits" in the Sahel, the Horn of Africa and south and southwest Asia, with extreme events triggering "large-scale suffering and loss of life", the organisations said.

Heatwave catastrophes this year in countries like Somalia and Pakistan foreshadow a future with deadlier, more frequent, and more intense heat-related humanitarian emergencies, they warned in a joint report.

The UN's Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) released the report in advance of next month's UN's COP27 climate change summit in Egypt.

They said aggressive steps needed to be taken immediately to avert potentially recurrent heat disasters, listing steps that could mitigate the worst effects of extreme heat.

"There are clear limits beyond which people exposed to extreme heat and humidity cannot survive," the report said.

"There are also likely to be levels of extreme heat beyond which societies may find it practically impossible to deliver effective adaptation for all.

"On current trajectories, heatwaves could meet and exceed these physiological and social limits in the coming decades, including in regions such as the Sahel and south and southwest Asia."

It warned that the impact of this would be "large-scale suffering and loss of life, population movements and further entrenched inequality."

The combined effects of ageing, warming and urbanisation would cause a significant increase in the number of at-risk people in developing countries in the coming decades.

"Projected future death rates from extreme heat are staggeringly high and comparable in magnitude by the end of the century to all cancers or all infectious diseases and staggeringly unequal," the report said.

Agricultural workers, children, the elderly and pregnant and breastfeeding women are at higher risk of illness and death, the report claimed.

"As the climate crisis goes unchecked, extreme weather events, such as heatwaves and floods, are hitting the most vulnerable people the hardest," said UN humanitarian chief Martin Griffiths.

"Nowhere is the impact more brutally felt than in countries already reeling from hunger, conflict and poverty."

IFRC Secretary-General Jagan Chapagain urged countries at COP27 to invest in climate adaptation and mitigation in the regions most at risk.

OCHA and the IFRC suggested five main steps to help combat the impact of extreme heatwaves, including providing early information to help people and authorities react in time, and finding new ways of financing local-level action.

They also included humanitarian organisations testing more "thermally-appropriate" emergency shelter and "cooling centres", while getting communities to alter their development planning to take account of likely extreme heat impacts.
