Social media platforms are built to capture attention, using powerful algorithms to keep users scrolling longer. Experts warn this “attention economy” model may be contributing to rising mental health concerns, including anxiety and low self-esteem. Studies suggest the constant need for engagement can make it harder to disconnect, raising fresh questions about how digital platforms shape behaviour and well-being.

How Social Media Algorithms Fuel Addiction And Impact Mental Health

France has taken a major step toward regulating online access for minors, as the upper house of parliament has cleared a social media ban law for teenagers with certain conditions. The move reflects growing concern over the impact of social media on young users.

Lawmakers say the restrictions aim to protect children from harmful content and excessive screen time, while also placing greater responsibility on tech platforms to enforce age limits. However, the conditional nature of the law suggests ongoing debate over how far such regulations should go.

Two mysterious videos posted to the White House’s official X and Instagram accounts on Wednesday night generated buzz online, with the purpose of the short, vertically shot clips unclear. One video was later deleted.

White House Uploads Mysterious Videos, Deletes One, Fuels Speculation

<p>The White House sparked a buzz on social media after posting two short cryptic videos on Wednesday night (Mar 25). The purpose or meaning behind the clips, which were posted on Instagram and X, was not clear as social media users tried to make sense of it. One video was later deleted from both handles. This comes amid the war with Iran, further fueling speculations about whether it had anything to do with the ongoing conflict in West Asia.&nbsp;</p><p>The first video, which was deleted, was posted around 9:15 p.m. EST. It appeared that it was recorded using a smartphone with the camera pointing downwards. In the four-second-long clip, a woman’s feet can be seen, and a voice is heard saying, “It’s launching soon, right?” The video also had a caption reading: “sound on”. The video was deleted from both the Instagram and X accounts of the White House about 90 minutes after it was posted. Some social media users also claimed that the voice in the first video sounded like that of White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt.</p>

‘It’s launching soon, right?’ White House’s ‘strange’ videos spark buzz on social media amid Iran war | WATCH

<p>As Iranian missiles cut across the Strait of Hormuz and US airstrikes hit targets near Tehran, another battleground has emerged online, on the social media accounts of Iran’s diplomatic missions. Since coordinated military action by the United States and Israel started on February 28, Iranian embassies from Pretoria to Kabul and even the consulate in Hyderabad have adopted an unusual communication strategy. Their posts blend sarcasm, internet humour, and pop-culture references to respond to unfolding events.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>On Monday, after US President Donald Trump claimed he had engaged in talks with Iran over two days to ease tensions, Iran’s embassy in Kabul was quick to counter. In a sharply worded message titled “Trump’s Retreat After Iran’s Firm Warning,” the embassy dismissed his statement, suggesting he had stepped back after being warned about potential retaliation targeting regional energy infrastructure.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p><strong>Also Read: </strong><a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/-only-the-language-of-missiles-iran-hits-back-hard-at-donald-trump-1774282982176"><strong>'Only the language of missiles': Iran hits back hard at Donald Trump</strong></a></p>

<p>Earlier, Trump had warned that the US might strike Iran’s energy facilities if Tehran did not reopen the Strait of Hormuz for global oil transport. The Kabul response reflected a broader pattern among Iranian missions. The Iranian consulate in Hyderabad also rejected claims of negotiations, sharing a state TV clip and accusing Trump of making false statements to distract from threats against Iran’s power grid.</p><h3><strong>Strait of Hormuz posts stir controversy</strong></h3><p>Iran’s embassy in Pretoria took a more provocative route, posting an image depicting the Strait of Hormuz filled with coffins draped in American flags. The caption implied that such coffins would be the only “American presence” allowed through the waterway. The post drew criticism from groups like the SA Jewish Report, which condemned it as a deliberate and disturbing message rather than satire. Despite the backlash, South Africa’s government, led by the African National Congress, did not issue an official response and has continued to maintain close ties with Iran. Notably, South Africa has also taken Israel to the International Court of Justice over allegations of genocide.</p>

<h3><strong>Thai crew meme sparks backlash</strong></h3><p>Earlier controversy arose when the Pretoria mission posted a meme referencing a Thai cargo ship hit by Iranian missiles. The image showed a crew member fleeing a damaged vessel with a caption likening the situation to a child afraid to face a parent after a mistake. The incident involved a Thai-flagged ship whose crew had to abandon it after an attack, later rescued by Oman’s navy. The post angered Thai citizens, prompting diplomatic protest from Thailand. The embassy later deleted the post and issued a clarification, stating it was not intended to offend but to warn vessels about entering the Strait without coordination.</p>

<h3><strong>Sharp words for Ukraine’s president</strong></h3><p>Tensions also spilled into exchanges with Ukraine. After President Volodymyr Zelensky posted a Nowruz message criticizing Iran’s leadership and linking it to Russia, Iran’s South Africa embassy responded harshly, calling for Ukrainians and Americans to be freed from “clowns and fools.” The embassy further amplified online mockery by sharing memes, including references to <i>Tom and Jerry</i>, ridiculing US efforts to reopen the Strait of Hormuz through military force.</p>

Missiles outside, memes inside: Here's how Iran embassies are roasting US online and winning the internet war

As Iranian missiles cut across the Strait of Hormuz and US airstrikes hit targets near Tehran, another battleground has emerged online, on the social media accounts of Iran’s diplomatic missions. Since coordinated military action by the United States and Israel started on February 28, Iranian embassies from Pretoria to Kabul and even the consulate in Hyderabad have adopted an unusual communication strategy. Their posts blend sarcasm, internet humour, and pop-culture references to respond to unfolding events. On Monday, after US President Donald Trump claimed he had engaged in talks with Iran over two days to ease tensions, Iran’s embassy in Kabul was quick to counter. In a sharply worded message titled “Trump’s Retreat After Iran’s Firm Warning,” the embassy dismissed his statement, suggesting he had stepped back after being warned about potential retaliation targeting regional energy infrastructure. India’s IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has issued a strong message to digital platforms, urging them to fairly share revenue with content creators. Warning that voluntary compliance is preferable, Vaishnaw said India may explore legal frameworks if platforms fail to reform their revenue models.

The minister raised concerns about eroding trust, the rise of synthetic and AI-generated content, and the need to protect original creators. He stressed that original content must be properly compensated to safeguard the growth of arts, science, and innovation in India’s rapidly expanding digital economy.

The United Kingdom government has introduced a new online safety rule requiring technology companies and social media platforms to remove non-consensual intimate or abusive images within 48 hours of a valid report or risk penalties. Under amendments to UK law, firms that fail to comply could face fines of up to 10% of their global revenue and possible service blocks in the UK. The move is aimed at boosting protections against the spread of intimate images shared without consent, particularly as AI-generated content rises.
