Singapore has launched ReadSG, a national reading movement designed to encourage people to spend at least 15 minutes a day reading. Participants can log their reading sessions and earn virtual coins that can be redeemed for cash. The reward is deliberately small, but the experiment tackles a much bigger problem: declining book-reading habits in an age of endless scrolling, watching reels and constant notifications. With technology fighting for every second of people's attention, Singapore is now trying to make the humble book competitive again.

New Delhi: Singapore’s prime minister and former premier have condemned a wave of racist online comments targeting the country’s Indian community, warning that prejudice must not be allowed to take root. If such behaviour goes unchecked, it can become normalised, deepen mistrust between communities, and pull us apart.”&nbsp;Senior Minister Lee Hsien Loong, who served as prime minister from 2004 to 2024, said the country’s first response to the Nepal disaster should have been “compassion and solidarity”. “It is deeply troubling to see racist comments and hateful remarks directed at our Indian community in the wake of the tragedy,” he said. “It is equally troubling when legitimate issues for public discussion, like Singapore Airlines’ investment in Air India, are distorted or exploited to stir vicious racial, anti-Indian resentment.”&nbsp;Lee said race and religion would “always be a fault line” in Singapore. “Human beings are not race blind. Singapore will always be vulnerable to these visceral and divisive pulls.” The comments follow remarks on Saturday by Senior Minister and Home Affairs Minister K Shanmugam, who said police were investigating “shameful, nasty and totally unacceptable” posts, including those from overseas accounts.&nbsp;Some comments about the missing Singaporeans suggested they were “not our own” or used a derogatory term for Indians. Singapore has become the most expensive city in the world for luxury spending for a fourth consecutive year. This comes after prices on items such as watches and jewellery increased around the globe. In the list, Zurich secured second spot, edging out London, and Monaco entered the top three for the first time since the survey started in 2020. In addition, Hong Kong and London rounded out the top five, according to an annual report by Swiss wealth manager Julius Baer Group Ltd. Zurich climbed three places in the rankings, largely due to the strengthening of the Swiss franc, which has benefited from Switzerland's reputation for stability and its status as a safe-haven currency during periods of uncertainty, according to the wealth manager. Singapore retained the top spot, driven by rising residential property and car prices, the two most heavily weighted categories in the index, as well as the strong Singapore dollar. The rankings are calculated using US dollar-based price comparisons. “What is clear in 2026 is that the world continues to be a complicated place, and uncertainty remains at a very high level,” Christian Gattiker, head of research at Julius Baer, stated in the report. “In this environment, stable cities and countries become even more attractive.”&nbsp;Also read: <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/microsoft-to-lays-off-4-800-employees-as-xbox-gaming-division-undergoes-major-restructuring-1783390691339">Microsoft to lay off 4,800 employees as Xbox gaming division undergoes major restructuring</a><h3>Index ranks 25 cities</h3>Julius Baer's Lifestyle Index ranks 25 cities by tracking the cost of 20 luxury goods and services, including residential property, cars, business-class air travel, school fees and fine-dining experiences. Singapore has introduced stricter disciplinary measures in schools, allowing caning for serious cases of bullying and misconduct. The move is aimed at curbing rising concerns over student behaviour, but it has also sparked debate over the use of corporal punishment in education. Supporters say it will deter bullying, while critics question its long-term impact on students.

Singapore Schools Can Now Use Caning for Serious Misconduct

Singapore has made headlines once again after announcing caning for severe cases of bullying. Singapore's Minister for Education Desmond Lee said on Tuesday that male bullies would be subjected to caning as a last resort, only when "all other measures are inadequate", female will be exempted from the punishment in line with Singapore's Criminal Procedure Code, which states "women shall not be punished with caning".&nbsp;He acknowledged the studies regarding corporal punishment in unregulated and informal settings and its negative outcomes. "Caning must be approved by the principal and administered only by authorised teachers," said Singapore's Minister of Education Desmond Lee. Schools shall consider factors such as maturity, age and whether it could help learn from his ability to learn from his mistakes.&nbsp;“We recognise this, and I want to emphasise that the context in our schools is quite different,” said Singapore's Minister of Education. Lee added that it is a restorative or disciplinary measure against undesirable activity such as bullying, cheating, gambling and vaping. First-time offenders, both girls and boys, of serious misconduct face one to three days of detention, suspension, an adjusted conduct grade or all three together; only older boys will receive one stroke of the cane if there are aggravating factors.Also Read: <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/china-wang-yi-iran-hormuz-ceasefire-us-tensions-1778063786015">China urges to reopen Strait of Hormuz defends Iran's right to peaceful nuclear energy</a>This approach is grounded in research, said Lee. Singapore allows caning for severe bullying cases as a last resort, with Education Minister Desmond Lee outlining strict safeguards and exemptions.

Singapore has made headlines once again after announcing caning for severe cases of bullying. Singapore's Minister for Education Desmond Lee said on Tuesday that male bullies would be subjected to caning as a last resort, only when "all other measures are inadequate", female will be exempted from the punishment in line with Singapore's Criminal Procedure Code, which states "women shall not be punished with caning". He acknowledged the studies regarding corporal punishment in unregulated and informal settings and its negative outcomes. "Caning must be approved by the principal and administered only by authorised teachers," said Singapore's Minister of Education Desmond Lee. Schools shall consider factors such as maturity, age and whether it could help learn from his ability to learn from his mistakes. “We recognise this, and I want to emphasise that the context in our schools is quite different,” said Singapore's Minister of Education. Lee added that it is a restorative or disciplinary measure against undesirable activity such as bullying, cheating, gambling and vaping. First-time offenders, both girls and boys, of serious misconduct face one to three days of detention, suspension, an adjusted conduct grade or all three together; only older boys will receive one stroke of the cane if there are aggravating factors. Caning for bullies? Singapore’s tough new school policy grabs attention

Two AI wheelchairs got in each other's way at the Changi Airport, Singapore, and it turned out to be a hilarious encounter. A passenger recorded the epic moment, showing the wheelchairs stuck to each other, with both unable to move. The tech equipment could not decipher that the object in their way wasn't a human, but one of its own. One of the wheelchairs' audio systems kept repeating, "Excuse me, please step aside", something that keeps humans out of their way while they move around. The viral video shared by Rishi Budhrani shows the lights blinking on the two wheelchairs, as one of them keeps saying, "Please step aside." The person recording the video says, "I think the robots have a problem." He adds, "That's the problem with AI when there is no human intervention." The wheelchairs remain entangled, as the person says, "I can't even help them because they don't want to be helped."Also Read: <a href="https://www.wionews.com/trending/trump-sleepless-night-truth-social-timeline-of-posts-ai-jesus-photo-1776414498732">Viral timeline reveals Trump’s sleepless Truth Social spree on night he posted AI Jesus photo</a> &nbsp;

Canada has also issued a similar advisory, urging travellers to monitor air quality levels regularly, especially those suffering from respiratory illnesses. In its guidance, Canada warned that smoke haze and other forms of air pollution can be extremely hazardous in urban centres such as Delhi, where pollution levels are typically worst during winter. It added that air quality in rural areas can deteriorate due to agricultural burning, while dust storms frequently affect northern India. Travellers were advised to closely track changing air pollution levels, particularly if they have respiratory problems or other pre-existing health conditions.

Multiple countries, including the UK, Canada and Singapore, advised their nationals to stay indoors and take preventive measures, such as using masks while travelling or going outdoors, as the national capital’s air quality remained in the ‘severe’ category for the third consecutive day.
