Although India won the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 in his absence, they&rsquo;d need him for the away England Tests later this year; however, Bond sent warning signs for the skipper Rohit Sharma and head coach Gautam Gambhir to utilise his services properly to avoid him suffering a stress fracture in his back, which is on the borderline.
&ldquo;I don't think so,&rdquo; Bond said on whether Bumrah should change his bowling action to preserve his career.&nbsp;
&ldquo;He had the [2023] surgery, but he played all that [Australia] Test series, performed unbelievably. At the end of the day, he just bowled too much over a one-month period. And it hasn't cracked, he hasn't got a fracture, he is on the borderline of a fracture,&rdquo; Bond said in a chat with ESPNcricinfo.&nbsp;
&ldquo;But what India would have learned is, if you then look at a five-Test match series in England and they do the same thing, they are probably going to get the same result. So you can't do that. You need a squad of bowlers where you can sort of pick and choose.&nbsp;Because if you lose him, you have got T20 World Cups, you've got 50-overs World Cups, and he's an important member across all formats, IPL, all that sort of stuff,&rdquo; Bond continued.
<h2>Too many overs broke Bumrah&rsquo;s back</h2>
Bumrah captained India in two Tests on its last tour Down Under, winning one (in Perth) and leaving the field midway in his second (at the final Test in Sydney). Though he was the standout bowler, picking 32 wickets from five Tests &ndash; the most by an Indian bowler on Australian soil, Bumrah paid the price for sending down a sheer volume of overs (151.2) that eventually broke his back.
"In Australia, it was just the sheer volume of overs that got him in the end - in those five Test matches, his performance was ridiculous, and they leaned on him a lot, and I think he might've bowled 50 overs in a Test match. You are not going to avoid an injury, you are just trying to avoid the really bad ones, and I'm hoping Bumrah can avoid another one of these," Bond said.

Speaking of Parag’s maturity as a 22-year-old, Bond said the right-handed batter is extremely talented, reminding him of a young SKY, as fans call Surya when he joined Mumbai Indians a few years ago.

"He sort of reminds me a little bit of Surya [Suryakumar], who came to Mumbai a few years ago," Bond said at the post-match press conference. "He looks like that - he has got extreme talent. He has just matured as a cricketer, even though he is only 22."

Meanwhile, after scoring a mere 68 runs from seven outings last season, Parag went back to the drawing board and worked extra yards to get to the position where he is. Acknowledging Parag’s hard work over the past year, Bond revealed the real reason behind trading Devdutt Padikkal for Avesh Khan was to move Parag up the order and utilise his potential to the maximum.

"He has had an outstanding domestic season, obviously, batting up the order. The trade we made with Devdutt [Padikkal], bringing Avesh [Khan] in, that was to put Riyan up into a position which was probably better suited,” Bond continued.

<h2>‘We are getting the best out of him’</h2>

Bond said Parag shouldn’t just be judged on his previous performances over the past seasons, given he was young and new to high-octane cricket then. The former MI bowling coach, who joined RR ahead of this season, said with the wealth of experience on his back, Parag is delivering for his team and the side is happy to get the best out of him.

“Riyan started so young, you forget that he was 17 or something, playing in one of the toughest spots in a batting line-up: No. 6. You look at the characters, who finish games around the IPL, they are generally pretty experienced guys.”&nbsp;

“The Tim Davids, the David Millers… these are high-quality players who play international cricket. Riyan had been tasked with that for a number of years. He is still a very young man, but he has got this wealth of experience behind him now.”

"We are getting the best of him. The investment that RR have made of him, is starting to reap the rewards. It is pretty exciting what he could offer for the rest of the season for us,” Bond said of Parag.&nbsp;

Having shared the dressing room with most of the current and former players (associated in some capacity with MI), Malinga knows the environment and is excited to resume in his new role come IPL 2024.&nbsp;

Outside of joining hands with the Mumbai Indians IPL franchise, Malinga is already coaching the MI Cape Town team in the SA20 league, South Africa, and MI New York in Major League Cricket, USA.

In a statement released on Friday, Malinga expressed his gratitude for being appointed MI’s new bowling coach and staying connected with the franchise where it all started for him in this league in 2009.

“It is truly an honour for me to be appointed Bowling Coach of Mumbai Indians, and my journey in the OneFamily continues, following MI New York and MI Cape Town,” said Malinga.&nbsp;

“I am looking forward to working closely with Mark, Polly, Rohit and the rest of the team, especially the bowling unit, whose approach I loved last season, and the young MI talent that has the potential to excel, backed by the passionate MI Paltan.”

A veteran of the Indian Premier League, Malinga is a four-time IPL winner, having won two now-discarded Champions League trophies before. Upon leaving MI after spending 13 seasons, Malinga joined the inaugural IPL winners, Rajasthan Royals, in 2022, guiding them to their first final in many years.&nbsp;

<h2>Malinga replaces Bond</h2>

Shane Bond, another veteran of world cricket, had bid adieu to the Mumbai Indians family after spending nine years with the franchise. On Wednesday, he announced his separation from MI, thanking the owners and the franchise for everything.

"I would like to thank the Ambani family for the opportunity to be part of MI One Family for the last nine seasons. It has been an incredible experience with so many great memories on and off the field. I have been lucky enough to work with and have strong relationships with so many great people, both players and staff. I will miss them all and wish them all the best for the future. Finally, thanks to the MI Paltan for their support as well,” Bond said in a statement.

IPL: Lasith Malinga replaces Shane Bond as Mumbai Indians new bowling coach

Sri Lanka legend and T20 great Lasith Malinga has replaced Kiwi veteran Shane Bond as the new fast-bowling coach of Mumbai Indians (MI) for the upcoming season of IPL. Malinga, a MI stalwart, returns to his former franchise after spending two seasons with inaugural winners Rajasthan Royals as their fast-bowling coach since his retirement in 2021.

It will be Malinga’s second stint with Mumbai Indians as a member of the backroom staff, having served as a mentor in 2018. The following year, he returned to the field as a player and helped the joint-most successful IPL franchise lift their fourth trophy in the UAE. In 2021, he announced his retirement from the premier domestic tournament.

Shane Bond, who was MI’s fast-bowling coach for the past nine seasons, joining them back in 2015, will make way for Malinga. The future of the former seamer with MI Emirates (as the head coach) in ILT20 remains in limbo as things stand.

The right-arm T20 specialist, Malinga won four IPL titles with Mumbai Indians (2013, 2015, 2017 and 2019), alongside winning the now-discarded Champions League T20 in 2011. The death-over specialist played 139 matches for MI, picking 195 wickets at 7.12.

Meanwhile, Mumbai Indians also changed their top brass ahead of the recently-concluded IPL 2023, with Protean keeper-batter Mark Boucher becoming the MI's new head coach. One of IPL's greatest teams made it to the top four this season, despite starting poorly, for the nth time in tournament history.&nbsp;

They finished fourth on the final day of the group stages but lost to Lucknow Super Giants by 81 runs in the Eliminator. For Mumbai Indians, Tilak Varma and Cameron Green were their star players, while uncapped seamer Akash Madhwal was the emerging player.&nbsp;

<h2>Change of bosses at other teams&nbsp;</h2>

Not only at Mumbai Indians, but also at some other teams, there has been a change in the top brass.&nbsp;

While Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) roped in former Australia legend Justin Langer as their head coach, replacing Andy Flower, ex-BCCI selector

MSK Prasad joined them as a strategy consultant.

Where Flower joined Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) as the head coach, replacing Mike Hesson, SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH) roped in former assistant Aussie coach Daniel Vettori as their top boss, who came in place of Brian Lara.

“Our bowling line up is also as good as anyone in the tournament and I think we are the team that no one really wants to play because they know we play well and we can do some damage. We have won tight games and that makes a huge difference," Mumbai Indians bowling coach Shane Bond said in a virtual press conference.

“Obviously, we did not play well against SRH but it was one of those days where we knew we have qualified so the game did not have any impact on our tournament. I think everybody is excited about what awaits us against the Delhi Capitals and we are looking forward to it," he added.

“I think both of our boys enjoyed the rest and we now have our bowling squad and everybody has played a game so it puts us in a really good position," Bond said.
