<p>Cruz had reportedly been receiving mental health treatment but had not attended the clinic for over a year.</p>

<p>Florida saw one of its <a href="http://www.wionews.com/world/ex-student-opens-fire-in-florida-school-at-least-17-killed-32906">deadliest mass shooting</a> on Wednesday when a 19-year-old former student attacked the school, killing 17 children.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Heres a rundown of the last five deadliest attacks in US schools and universities:</p>

<p><strong><em>1. Umpqua Community College Shooting&nbsp;</em></strong></p>

<p>On October 1, 2015, a 26-year-old man identified as Christopher Harper-Mercer committed the deadliest mass shooting in Oregon history, killing nine people and injuring seven others at Umpqua Community College in Roseburg, Oregon.&nbsp;</p>

<p>He only let one person go just so that he could inform the police about the incident. Mercer had suffered from long-term mental illness and was described as &quot;hate filled&quot; by those who knew him.</p>

<p>Some theories behind the mass shooting were Mercer falling below a C average, putting him at risk for suspension, as well as him not being able to pay the tuition bill due.</p>

<p>&nbsp;He ultimately committed suicide after the attack.</p>

<p><strong><em>2. Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown</em></strong></p>

<p>On December 14, 2012, 20-year-old Adam Lanza shot 20 children and six adults at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Lanza killed his mother, before entering the school where he killed 26 people and injured two others; the majority of his victims were children aging from five to 10 years old.</p>

<p>He committed suicide upon completion of the attack. According to the media and news reports, this was one of the most bizarre shootings because Lanza never offered a motive or reasoning behind the murder of his mother nor the horrendous mass slaying of innocent children.</p>

<p><strong><em>3. Oikos University Shooting</em></strong></p>

<p>On April 2, 2012, 43-year-old One L. Goh committed California&#39;s deadliest mass killing on at the Korean Christian college Oikos University and killed seven people and wounded at least three more.&nbsp;</p>

<p>He was a former student of the school and opened fire early morning on April 2. Goh had been a nursing student at the college but was not enrolled at the time of the shooting.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Goh apparently targeted a school director he was angry at - but who no longer worked there.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Goh is at Napa State Hospital being treated for paranoid schizophrenia, with his lawyer saying he saw faces in mirrors and experienced delusions regarding &quot;the battle between God and Satan and his role in that battle.&quot;</p>

<p><em><strong>4. Northern Illinois University</strong></em></p>

<p>On &nbsp;February 14, 2008, Steven Kazmierczak, 27, &nbsp;dressed in black stepped from behind a curtain at the front of a large lecture hall at Northern Illinois University on Thursday and shot 21 people, five of them fatally, then shot and killed himself.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Four died at the scene, including the shooter, and two later died at the hospital. At least 22 people, including a graduate student who was teaching an ocean sciences class, were shot.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The shooter was a graduate student at NIU, he appeared to be a model student, earning a dean&rsquo;s award in 2006.</p>

<p>He also served as vice president of the Academic Criminal Justice Association, a student group focused on educating the community.</p>

<p>He was treated temporarily for mental illness at the Elk Grove Village Thresholds-Mary Hill House psychiatric center,[33] for being &quot;unruly&quot; at home. Reports said that his behavior seemed to become more erratic in the weeks leading up to the shooting and that it is believed he stopped taking medication beforehand.</p>

<p><strong><em>5. Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University</em></strong></p>

<p>On April 16, 2007, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in Blacksburg, Virginia came under attack when senior student Seung-Hui Cho killed 32 people and injured 17 more in two attacks &ndash; one in a co-ed dormitory, the other in the Engineering, Science and Mechanics building.</p>

<p>Cho ultimately committed suicide following the shooting.&nbsp;He is noted as committing the deadliest attack on a school in US history.</p>

<p>Within hours of arriving in Lucknow, I took off on a scooter with a colleague to a nearby slum area. We were going into the field. Upon arriving at the session site, the kids were called and the facilitator introduced the session. Then the children, in unison, asked &ldquo;Bhaiyya, may we please know your name?&rdquo; &ldquo;My name is Jackson,&rdquo; I replied Urdu. This is going well so far, I thought to myself. I understood today&rsquo;s activity would be football (soccer) and that there would be two groups for the drills.</p>

<p>From there, however, the session seemed to become controlled chaos. Kids ran everywhere, doing drills and kicking the balls in all directions. This continued for almost the entire hour, until we regrouped and discussed how the drills went. The session I observed, a part of Project KHEL&rsquo;s Made in Maidaan life skills-education program for kids aged 7-16, was a jarring and enlightening experience all at once. It was the first of almost 30 sessions I would observe or help facilitate over the next two weeks.</p>

<p>While Project KHEL has other programs, ranging from Ultimate Frisbee to activity-based literacy programs, our main program utilises a Sports For Development method to deliver a self-designed Life Skills Education program for the benefit of underprivileged youth in Lucknow through sessions, hour-long &ldquo;classes&rdquo; delivered twice per week [1]. Life skills are defined as psychosocial abilities for adaptive and positive behaviour that enable individuals to deal effectively with the demands and challenges of everyday life [2].</p>

<p>Sports for Development programs and Life Skills Education programs are both widely popular both in India and globally as development methods. Their use also has significant institutional backing, as the United Nations see sport as a crucial method by which to achieve the newest Sustainable Development Goals [3], while the concept of Life Skills Education is itself a product of the World Health Organisation [4]. However, Project KHEL&rsquo;s combination of these philosophies is unique because of the way that sports and games are vehicles to teach life skills.</p>

<p>Rather than discussing life skills and drawing out messages through, Project KHEL has kids playing, working together, and experiencing these life skills as they learn and understand them. Each session has a specific plan of activities aimed at achieving a life skills-oriented outcome through a mix of sports and games.</p>

<p>Despite summers of experience as a summer camp counsellor during high school and college, it was the concept of fieldwork which worried me most about coming to Lucknow to begin work with Project KHEL. At Project KHEL, fieldwork involves working directly with these children, facilitating sessions of sports, games and activities to teach life skills. What if I don&rsquo;t understand their Hindi, or if they don&rsquo;t understand me? What if I don&rsquo;t have the presence to be a facilitator?</p>

<p>I collided with all these concerns in my very first session, meeting fifty children and learning the ropes as the session happened. I spent the entire hour trying to figure out what was happening around me and to understand what the other facilitators and all the children, everyone except me, seemed to understand. By the end of the session, I had realised how the games had been played, what lessons facilitators aimed to draw from them, and what facilitators needed to pay most attention to during the session. Like many things at Project KHEL, learning through participation is the best way to understand both the work itself but also the motivations and intentions of every choice made regarding sessions.</p>

<p>The nature of Project KHEL&rsquo;s programming requires staff to be actively in the field almost every day in some capacity, Being in the field has been an eye-opening experience, as well as a complicated one. Witnessing Project KHEL&rsquo;s programs firsthand, seeing the activities, getting to know the children, understanding the planning process for each session, figuring out how to manage large groups of children, dealing within-session complications like sudden rain or injuries, making sure to deliver effective and meaningful briefings and debriefings for children and staff, all of this is necessary to fully understand both the programs and mission of Project KHEL.</p>

<p>Relying on extensive communication and feedback to critique their own work and methods, I have been deeply impressed by their commitment to self-reflection and taking meaningful action based on this. It is this systematic commitment to organisational improvement that made it so easy to share the passion that all of the staff brings to each and every session and every project.</p>

<p>Everyone in the office has helped me feel at home, and our guiding principle, putting our kids first always, is a unifying idea that I connected to immediately. Sharing this is something I have drawn strength from while working in the field.</p>

<p>Six weeks in, I love facilitating sessions. I still make mistakes, all the time in fact, but my colleagues will always help me to do better, knowing that improvement is the aim. Having now facilitated or observed almost 50 sessions across Project KHEL&rsquo;s seven programs, fieldwork has become the highlight of each and every day, and knowing that I have my colleagues and a child-centred methodology for monitoring and evaluation behind me means that no mistake will be in vain.</p>

'A commitment to collective learning could be the unifying principle of Project KHEL?s mission'

Within hours of arriving in Lucknow, I took off on a scooter with a colleague to a nearby slum area. We were going into the field. Upon arriving at the session site, the kids were called and the facilitator introduced the session. Then the children, in unison, asked “Bhaiyya, may we please know your name?” “My name is Jackson,” I replied Urdu. This is going well so far, I thought to myself. I understood today’s activity would be football (soccer) and that there would be two groups for the drills. From there, however, the session seemed to become controlled chaos. Kids ran everywhere, doing drills and kicking the balls in all directions. This continued for almost the entire hour, until we regrouped and discussed how the drills went. The session I observed, a part of Project KHEL’s Made in Maidaan life skills-education program for kids aged 7-16, was a jarring and enlightening experience all at once. It was the first of almost 30 sessions I would observe or help facilitate over the next two weeks. While Project KHEL has other programs, ranging from Ultimate Frisbee to activity-based literacy programs, our main program utilises a Sports For Development method to deliver a self-designed Life Skills Education program for the benefit of underprivileged youth in Lucknow through sessions, hour-long “classes” delivered twice per week [1]. Life skills are defined as psychosocial abilities for adaptive and positive behaviour that enable individuals to deal effectively with the demands and challenges of everyday life [2]. Sports for Development programs and Life Skills Education programs are both widely popular both in India and globally as development methods. Their use also has significant institutional backing, as the United Nations see sport as a crucial method by which to achieve the newest Sustainable Development Goals [3], while the concept of Life Skills Education is itself a product of the World Health Organisation [4]. However, Project KHEL’s combination of these philosophies is unique because of the way that sports and games are vehicles to teach life skills. Rather than discussing life skills and drawing out messages through, Project KHEL has kids playing, working together, and experiencing these life skills as they learn and understand them. Each session has a specific plan of activities aimed at achieving a life skills-oriented outcome through a mix of sports and games. Despite summers of experience as a summer camp counsellor during high school and college, it was the concept of fieldwork which worried me most about coming to Lucknow to begin work with Project KHEL. At Project KHEL, fieldwork involves working directly with these children, facilitating sessions of sports, games and activities to teach life skills. What if I don’t understand their Hindi, or if they don’t understand me? What if I don’t have the presence to be a facilitator? I collided with all these concerns in my very first session, meeting fifty children and learning the ropes as the session happened. I spent the entire hour trying to figure out what was happening around me and to understand what the other facilitators and all the children, everyone except me, seemed to understand. By the end of the session, I had realised how the games had been played, what lessons facilitators aimed to draw from them, and what facilitators needed to pay most attention to during the session. Like many things at Project KHEL, learning through participation is the best way to understand both the work itself but also the motivations and intentions of every choice made regarding sessions. The nature of Project KHEL’s programming requires staff to be actively in the field almost every day in some capacity, Being in the field has been an eye-opening experience, as well as a complicated one. Witnessing Project KHEL’s programs firsthand, seeing the activities, getting to know the children, understanding the planning process for each session, figuring out how to manage large groups of children, dealing within-session complications like sudden rain or injuries, making sure to deliver effective and meaningful briefings and debriefings for children and staff, all of this is necessary to fully understand both the programs and mission of Project KHEL. The Project KHEL team celebrates Diwali (Others) × Relying on extensive communication and feedback to critique their own work and methods, I have been deeply impressed by their commitment to self-reflection and taking meaningful action based on this. It is this systematic commitment to organisational improvement that made it so easy to share the passion that all of the staff brings to each and every session and every project. Everyone in the office has helped me feel at home, and our guiding principle, putting our kids first always, is a unifying idea that I connected to immediately. Sharing this is something I have drawn strength from while working in the field. Six weeks in, I love facilitating sessions. I still make mistakes, all the time in fact, but my colleagues will always help me to do better, knowing that improvement is the aim. Having now facilitated or observed almost 50 sessions across Project KHEL’s seven programs, fieldwork has become the highlight of each and every day, and knowing that I have my colleagues and a child-centred methodology for monitoring and evaluation behind me means that no mistake will be in vain. Here, every day is Children's Day

<p>At least 17 million women and girls in Africa collect water every day, which increases their risk of sexual abuse, disease and dropping out of school, a study published recently has found.</p>

<p>It is one of the first studies to calculate how many women and children were responsible for water collection in Africa, the researchers said.</p>

<p>Using datasets from the World Bank, the UN&nbsp;children&#39;s agency UNICEF, and the US&nbsp;Agency for International Development, researchers found that around 3 million children and 14 million women collect water in sub-Saharan Africa.</p>

<p>&quot;The absolute number of adult females affected by this practice was a shock to me,&quot; Jay Graham, lead author of the study, told the Thomson Reuters Foundation.</p>

<p>&quot;I knew it would be large... but I didn&#39;t realise it would be that high,&quot; added Graham, who is professor at the Milken Institute School of Public Health at the George Washington University.</p>

<p>The daily practice causes musculoskeletal damage, soft tissue damage and can lead to early arthritis, Graham said.</p>

<p>People also have to contend with water-borne diseases like schistosomiasis, an infection caused by parasitic worms living in fresh water, he said.</p>

<p>Across all 24 countries examined, including Sierra Leone, Malawi and Niger, more girls were tasked with water collection than boys. Women were also the primary water collector in all countries.</p>

<p>Children are pulled out of school for the daily task, and many women cannot earn an income because of the time and energy it takes to collect water, Graham said.</p>

<p>Since they often need to walk long distances to find water, women and children are also at a higher risk of sexual abuse, he added.</p>

<p>In a statement issued last month, the Human Rights Commission of Sierra Leone said drought was putting even more pressure on children to find water.</p>

<p>&quot;Children, particularly girls, are out in the street very late at night or as early as 4a.m. in search of water,&quot; the statement read.</p>

<p>&quot;This heightens their vulnerability and contributes to increase in teenage pregnancy, child labour, high rates of school drop outs, and poor school performance,&quot; it said.</p>

<p>Demand for water is expected to increase by 2050 as the world&#39;s population is forecast to grow by one-third to more than 9 billion, according to the United Nations.</p>

<p>As climate change strengthens, drought is becoming more frequent and severe in southern Africa, and that &ndash; combined with this year&#39;s El Nino phenomenon &ndash; is taking a heavy toll on rural lives and economies.</p>

<p>&quot;With climate change, it&#39;s going to be more of an uphill battle,&quot; said Graham. &quot;If there&#39;s focused attention on it and resources, we can improve upon the situation but I do think it&#39;s going to become more difficult.&quot;</p>

<p>But it also crucial to address gender inequality and to recognise the unpaid labour that women do across the globe, he said, which he believes is the underlying issue.</p>

<p>&quot;There is a need to address cultural values and really shifting the belief that women and men are equal too.&quot;</p>

<p>The 33-year-old Salling agreed to turn himself in on June 3 to face the charges filed in federal court in Los Angeles, the U.S. Attorney&#39;s Office for the region said in a statement.</p>

<p>Representatives for Salling, a Los Angeles resident, and his attorney, did not immediately return calls.</p>

<p>The federal charges against the Texas-born Salling for receipt and possession of child pornography stem from his arrest by Los Angeles police and federal agents on Dec. 29, 2015. He was released on bail of $20,000 and was initially expected to be charged in Los Angeles County court.</p>

<p>But after investigators realized the &quot;scope of the collection&quot; of child porn they had uncovered, the case was handed over to federal prosecutors, the U.S. Attorney&#39;s Office said.</p>

<p>&quot;The traditional stereotype about the kinds of people who commit child sexual exploitation crimes simply doesn&#39;t dovetail with reality,&quot; Joseph Macias, a special agent in charge for the Department of Homeland Security, said in a statement on the filing of the charges.</p>

<p>Macias added that child pornography suspects can be of &quot;all ages and from all walks of life.&quot;</p>

<p>Salling&#39;s arrest came after investigators received a tip that he was in possession of child porn, Los Angeles police said in a statement at the time.</p>

<p>A laptop, a hard drive and a mobile flash drive from Salling&#39;s home contained thousands of images and videos of child pornography, and investigators continue to review the material, federal prosecutors said.</p>

<p>In the meantime, the charges against the actor center on a still image and three videos of child pornography depicting young girls, the statement said. The two charges each carry a maximum sentence of 20 years in federal prison.</p>

<p>Salling on the Fox television show &quot;Glee,&quot; which ran from 2009 to 2015, played Puck, a bully and a football player who shows a softer side when he joins the glee club at his high school.</p>

<p>Before that show, Salling had a number of smaller roles, including a part in 1996 horror film &quot;Children of the Corn IV: The Gathering.&quot;</p>

But after investigators realized the "scope of the collection" of child porn they had uncovered, the case was handed over to federal prosecutors, the U.S. Attorney's Office said. "The traditional stereotype about the kinds of people who commit child sexual exploitation crimes simply doesn't dovetail with reality," Joseph Macias, a special agent in charge for the Department of Homeland Security, said in a statement on the filing of the charges. Macias added that child pornography suspects can be of "all ages and from all walks of life." Salling's arrest came after investigators received a tip that he was in possession of child porn, Los Angeles police said in a statement at the time. A laptop, a hard drive and a mobile flash drive from Salling's home contained thousands of images and videos of child pornography, and investigators continue to review the material, federal prosecutors said. In the meantime, the charges against the actor center on a still image and three videos of child pornography depicting young girls, the statement said. The two charges each carry a maximum sentence of 20 years in federal prison. Salling on the Fox television show "Glee," which ran from 2009 to 2015, played Puck, a bully and a football player who shows a softer side when he joins the glee club at his high school. Before that show, Salling had a number of smaller roles, including a part in 1996 horror film "Children of the Corn IV: The Gathering."
