It was no repeat of 1992 as England thrashed Pakistan by five wickets in the final to win the T20 World Cup 2022 title at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) in Melbourne on Sunday. Ben Stokes slammed an unbeaten half-century to help England chase down the low-key target of 138 runs with an over to spare and lift their second T20 World Cup trophy with a comprehensive win.

Stokes, who hadn't played much international cricket in the build-up to the World Cup, once again rose to the occasion&nbsp;in a big game for the reigning ODI World Cup champions and proved why he is regarded as one of the best all-rounders in the world.

In pursuit of the 138-run target, England were reeling at 45/3 at one stage in the run chase after losing their top three quick successions before Stokes steadied the ship for Buttler's men.&nbsp;He allowed others to go after the bowlers while holding the fort on one end.

Stokes added 39 runs for the fourth wicket with Harry Brook (20) before sharing a crucial 48-run stand for the fifth wicket with Moeen Ali (19). The left-hander took his time in settling down but seamlessly shifted gears in the death overs to take England home comfortably.

England were wobbly with the bat, but hostile with the ball and outstanding on the field in a five-wicket victory over Afghanistan in their T20 World Cup opener here on Saturday. Ibrahim Zadran (32) and Usman Ghani (30) were the two main contributors for Afghanistan. When England batted, Liam Livingstone (29 off 21 balls) was there till the end to see the team through after they lost five wickets. England won with 11 balls to spare.

Sam Curran bags five-wicket haul as England beat Afghanistan by five wickets in T20 World Cup 2022

Former Chennai Super Kings (CSK) batter Faf du Plessis is all set to reunite with the franchise as he has been reportedly roped in by the CSK management as a marquee player for their team in South Africa's new T20 league. Cricket South Africa (CSA) is yet to name the T20 tournament which is set to get underway next year and will have six teams, all owned by the Indian Premier League (IPL) franchises.

While CSK owners have bought the Johannesburg franchise in CSA's new T20 league, Mumbai Indians (MI) have bagged the Cape Town team. The owners of Delhi Capitals, Sunrisers Hyderabad, Rajasthan Royals and Lucknow Super Giants have bought the Pretoria, Port Elizabeth, Paarl and Durban franchises respectively.

All six franchises have already made some key signings as Wednesday (August 10) was the last day for the direct acquisition of players. Cricket South Africa had asked all six teams to submit a list of a maximum of five players they have signed with a minimum of one South African part of the list.

The CSA rules also state that a franchise can only have three foreigners as part of their final five with not more than two players from one country, and at least one uncapped player on the list. As per a report in Cricbuzz, all six teams have retained some of the players from their existing teams in the IPL.

As per Cricbuzz, CSK have roped in Du Plessis for their Johannesburg franchise. The former South Africa captain was part of the CSK squad in the IPL from 2011 to 2021 barring just two seasons in 2016 and 2017 when the team was banned from the competition. However, CSK couldn't retain Du Plessis in the IPL 2022 mega auction earlier this year as he was bought by Royal Challengers Bangalore.

Apart from Du Plessis, CSK have also signed England all-rounder Moeen Ali for their Johannesburg franchise. Ali will now for a CSK-owned franchise in both the IPL and the South African league. Mumbai Indians, who have acquired the MI Cape Town team for the CSA T20 league, have signed a host of superstars.

The franchise on Thursday (August 11) confirmed they have roped in Rashid Khan, Sam Curran, Kagiso Rabada and Liam Livingstone for the South African T20 league. As per Cricbuzz, Delhi Capitals have retained their South African pacer Anrich Nortje while Sunrisers Hyderabad, who own the Port Elizabeth team, have retained Aiden Markram.

The T20 league in South Africa is likely to clash with&nbsp;UAE's league&nbsp;- ILT20 next year.

However, all the players who have committed to playing in CSA's T20 league are likely to snub ILT20 for its South African counterpart.

All six franchises have already made some key signings as Wednesday (August 10) was the last day for the direct acquisition of players. Cricket South Africa had asked all six teams to submit a list of a maximum of five players they have signed with a minimum of one South African part of the list. The CSA rules also state that a franchise can only have three foreigners as part of their final five with not more than two players from one country, and at least one uncapped player on the list. As per a report in Cricbuzz, all six teams have retained some of the players from their existing teams in the IPL. The former South Africa captain was part of the CSK squad in the IPL from 2011 to 2021 barring just two seasons in 2016 and 2017 when the team was banned from the competition. However, CSK couldn't retain Du Plessis in the IPL 2022 mega auction earlier this year as he was bought by Royal Challengers Bangalore. Apart from Du Plessis, CSK have also signed England all-rounder Moeen Ali for their Johannesburg franchise. Ali will now for a CSK-owned franchise in both the IPL and the South African league. Mumbai Indians, who have acquired the MI Cape Town team for the CSA T20 league, have signed a host of superstars. The franchise on Thursday (August 11) confirmed they have roped in Rashid Khan, Sam Curran, Kagiso Rabada and Liam Livingstone for the South African T20 league. Curran had scored 56 runs and picked up 9 wickets in what was an average campaign for him last season. He was subsequently ruled out of the T20 World Cup 2021 and also missed the Ashes 2021-22 in Australia due to his injury.

Curran took to Twitter on Saturday to reveal he had decided to give IPL 2022 a miss to focus on his rehab after recovering from injury. He had recently hit the nets for the first time in three months and is preparing for the county season with Surrey.

I’m back in the nets and feeling great so hope to be back soon, Wishing everyone all the best for the tournament. I look forward to starting the season with @surreycricket," Curran wrote in a tweet.

From Novak Djokovic to Glenn Maxwell: Global stars wish India a safe and happy Diwali

All-rounder Sam Curran has been ruled out of the ICC T20 World Cup with a lower back injury, which he sustained during an Indian Premier League game for Chennai Super Kings, the England &amp; Wales Cricket Board said on Tuesday.

He will fly back to the UK in the next couple of days and will have further scans and a full review later this week by the ECB's medical team.

"Curran complained of back pain after Chennai Super Kings Indian Premier League fixture on Saturday against Rajasthan Royals. Results of the scan revealed the injury," the ECB stated.

Curran's brother, Tom, has been drafted into England's squad for the World Cup. In addition, Surrey's left-arm seamer Reece Topley has been added as a travelling reserve. Topley will join the England party in due course.

The 23-year-old Curran had a forgettable IPL, scoring only 56 runs from nine games and picking up nine wickets at an expensive economy rate of 9.93.

"Unfortunately I have received a gutting news that I will unfortunately be missing the remainder of the IPL season and the World Cup. Extremely gutted...Absolutely loved my time with Chennai this season," Sam Curran told CSK.

"It hasn't really sunk in yet but I'm leaving the team in a fantastic space. The boys are playing really good cricket. I want to be supporting them from where I am in the next few days.

Curran, 23, has played 24 Tests, 11 ODIs and 16 T20Is for England. He was a part of the England Test squad that played India in England prior to the IPL.

As a result, team management have decided the best course of action is for Curran to join England's white-ball players for their already-organised private charter flight on February 26.

An ECB statement said: "Originally it was planned the Surrey all-rounder would fly to Ahmedabad in time to be available for the fourth Test in the city, starting on 4 March.

"However, in the midst of the ongoing pandemic, making secure arrangements for such a journey proved too great a logistical challenge."

Chris Woakes will leave the squad as planned after the third Test, a vacancy Curran had been expected to fill.

England, however, still have plenty of pace-bowling options in James Anderson, Stuart Broad, Jofra Archer, Ben Stokes and Olly Stone, with Ollie Robinson in reserve.

Ireland ended England's World Cup honeymoon in dramatic style on Wednesday, bowling out the host nation for a derisory 85 on the first day at Lord's as they eyed one of the biggest shocks in Test history.

Tim Murtagh, who is 37 years old, took a stunning five for 13 in nine overs on a ground where he plays for Middlesex.

Ireland then consolidated their position by making 207 in reply for a first-innings lead of 122.

When they were all out, there was still time for one more over and England felt compelled to have nightwatchman Jack Leach, rather than a specialist batsman, face Murtagh.

Leach somehow survived a maiden and England closed on nought for nought in their second innings.

Appropriately, it was tailender Murtagh who took Ireland into a hundred-run lead in their first Test against England after the visitors suffered a slump of their own when he pulled veteran paceman Stuart Broad for four. &nbsp;

In making 16, Murtagh scored more runs than he conceded while the fact 20 wickets fell broke a first-day record of 18 for a Lord's Test that had stood since 1896.
