Rushdie's essay "On Censorship," which was adapted from a lecture he gave in 2012, was read aloud by American author A.M. Homes, whose own works, like the novel "The End of Alice," have caused controversy over the years.&nbsp;

She read, "No writer really wants to talk about censorship. Censorship is "anti-creation, negative energy, uncreation, the bringing into being of non-being," according to writers who wish to discuss creation.

After Iranian leaders begged for his murder because of how he had portrayed Islam and the Prophet Mohammed in his 1988 book "The Satanic Verses," Rushdie spent years living under police protection.&nbsp;

The book's prologue was read aloud by British novelist and journalist Hari Kunzru.&nbsp;

"Salman once wrote that the role of the writer is to name the unnameable, to point at frauds, to take sides, start arguments, shape the world, and stop it from going to sleep," Kunzru said. "That's why we're here."

The attack happened 33 years after Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, the supreme leader of Iran at the time, issued a religious decree, or fatwa, denouncing Rushdie for his novel "The Satanic Verses."&nbsp;

On Friday, when Rushdie stepped onto the podium to give a lecture literary festival in upstate New York, he was attacked with a knife. The accused was later identified as Hadi Matar, 24, from New Jersey.

A bounty worth millions of dollars was placed by the Islamic extremists on Rushdie who found his book ‘Satanic Verses’ to be blasphemous. That bounty was placed after a fatwa was issued 33 years ago by then Iran's supreme leader Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini. His successor, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, in 2019 said that the decree remained "irrevocable."

Salman Rushdie on ‘long road to recovery’, says his agent

United States President Joe Biden has condemned the “vicious attack” on noted author Salman Rushdie who was attacked with a knife on a New York lecture stage.

Hailing the Indian-born author as standing “for essential, universal ideals”, Biden expressed his solidarity with Rushdie and “all those who stand for freedom of expression”.

“Jill and I were shocked and saddened to learn of the vicious attack on Salman Rushdie yesterday in New York,” Biden said in a statement released by the White House.&nbsp;

“We, together with all Americans and people around the world, are praying for his health and recovery. I am grateful to the first responders and the brave individuals who jumped into action to render aid to Rushdie and subdue the attacker.”

Rushdie, whose book ‘Satanic Verses’ drew wide condemnation from Muslim countries, had been in the underground after a fatwa was issued by Iran’s late leader Grand Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini issued in 1989, calling for his death.

After living under police protection, Rushdie had been living openly in New York.

On Friday, the Man Booker Prize award winner was attacked by a New Jersey resident, 24-year-old Hadi Matar. He is currently hospitalised with a damaged liver, severed nerves in his arm and at the risk of losing an eye. He has since been taken off the ventilator.

Matar has been charged with attempted murder as well as assault on a man who was sharing the stage with Rushdie. He has pleaded not guilty and is being held without bail.

Though it is unclear why Matar wanted Rushdie dead, the New York district attorney during a preliminary court hearing on Saturday&nbsp;attributed fatwa to be the main reason for the frenzied attack.

According to The Guardian, Matar’s social media activity reportedly reflected an admiration of Iran’s government as well as Islamic extremism.

Though by 2005, the Iranian government distanced itself from the fatwa, Rushdie was still under the radar of religious extremists who reportedly have placed a bounty which in recent years increased to more than $3m.

The Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), is a 2015 agreement that allowed Iran to curb its nuclear programme in exchange for relief from US, European Union, and UN sanctions.

Since the Friday stabbing, Iran has not made any official comment, however, a hardline newspaper called Kayhan, whose editor-in-chief is appointed by Iran's Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, wrote: “A thousand bravos ... to the brave and dutiful person who attacked the apostate and evil Salman Rushdie in New York," adding, “The hand of the man who tore the neck of God's enemy must be kissed.”

New York police have disclosed the identity of the assailant who stabbed renowned Indian-origin author Salman Rushdie on Friday (August 12). The author of the controversial book 'Satanic Verses' was reportedly stabbed in the neck and abdomen and had to be airlifted to a hospital where he underwent surgery. Police also said they were working with federal authorities to figure out the motive.&nbsp;

Hadi Matar, a 24-year-old resident of Fairview, New Jersey, was named by police as the suspect.&nbsp;According to a 'The New York Post' report, citing law enforcement sources, the suspect sympathised with the Iranian government, which had called for Rushdie's death.

Salman Rushdie, 75, was being introduced to a large audience at the Chautauqua Institution for a talk on artistic freedom, when the assailant darted to the stage and lunged at him, according to eyewitnesses.

Those present assisted in removing the man from Rushdie, who had collapsed to the ground. The perpetrator was apprehended by a New York State Police trooper who was providing security for the event.&nbsp;

As per a Reuters update, Rushdie was on a ventilator and unable to talk on Friday evening following the attack.

"The news is not good," his book agent, Andrew Wylie, stated in an email. "Salman will likely lose one eye; the nerves in his arm were severed; and his liver was stabbed and damaged," he added.

There were no evident security checks at the Chautauqua Institution; instead, attendees said, that personnel just examined their passes for admittance.&nbsp;The attack has been criticised as an assault on freedom of speech and expression by writers and politicians all around the world.

While Rushdie received first aid on stage, his current condition remains unknown. The police report further stated that&nbsp;that he was taken to the hospital with the help of a medical helicopter.

Rushdie won the prestigious Man Booker Prize in 1981 for his second novel — Midnight's Children — and the book also went on to win "Booker of Bookers" award on two different occasions.

One of Rushdie’s infamous works — The Satanic Verses&nbsp;— resulted in a number of death threats on the grounds of blasphemy. He was severely criticised for the content and Iran’s late leader Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini even issued a fatwa with someone posting a $3 million bounty on him.

In the later years, Iran decided to not endorse Khomeini’s fatwa, but the bounty kept increasing over time. According to reports, an Iranian religious foundation made it $3.3 million in 2012.

While the threats continued, Rushdie said that he was not afraid and, in his memoir, “Joseph Anton”, he wrote that he believes no one is interested in the bounty placed on his name.
