Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Saturday (Jan 31) said his negotiators were waiting to hear from the US side on further meetings to end the war with Russia. This comes after the first direct trilateral talks were held between the US, Russia, and Ukraine earlier on January 23 in Abu Dhabi as part of US President Donald Trump’s push to end the nearly four-year-long war. Zelensky’s remarks suggest that a second round of talks scheduled to start in Abu Dhabi on Sunday (Feb 1) may have been stalled.“Ukraine is ready to work in all working formats,” Zelensky said. “It is important that there are results and that the meetings take place. We are counting on meetings next week and are preparing for them.”Meanwhile, US envoy Steve Witkoff said he had had “productive and constructive” talks with Russian envoy Kirill Dmitriev in Florida on Saturday (Jan 31).“Today in Florida, the Russian Special Envoy Kirill Dmitriev held productive and constructive meetings as part of the U.S. mediation effort toward advancing a peaceful resolution of the Ukrainian conflict,” Witkoff posted on X. “We are encouraged by this meeting that Russia is working toward securing peace in Ukraine.”Last week, negotiators from Ukraine and Russia held their first in-person negotiations in Abu Dhabi. But I think we're getting very close to getting a settlement,” he said. However, he added, “I think that we have a good chance of getting it settled.”Earlier on Thursday (Jan 29), Trump said that he has asked the Russian president to halt attacks on Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities as millions were left without heating during an “extreme” cold snap in the country.“Because of the cold, extreme cold ... Ukrainian drones destroyed 15 Russian military aircraft, reportedly worth more than $1billion in Operation Spiderweb. Russian airfields deep behind the front lines were targeted, the Daily Mail reported. Ukraine did not reveal the date of the strike that took place across five different military bases. The news of the operation comes as Russia's invasion of Ukraine reaches the four-year mark. The conflict has failed to be resolved, leaving millions homeless and affecting the daily lives of Ukrainians. Ukraine's spy service, the SBU, claims its top Alpha unit wiped out 11 Sukhoi and MiG fighter jets, three helicopters and an Antonov An-26 cargo plane. These include Su-30SM and Su-34 jets, and the older Su-27 and Su-24 planes. MiG-31 interceptors, a key part of Russia's air defence system, were also destroyed in the attack. These interceptors are used to launch hypersonic Kinzhal missiles. Russia's transport and logistics capabilities also took a hit with the destruction of a Mi-8, a Mi-26 and a Mi-28, according to the Security Service of Ukraine. The trilateral negotiations between Russia, Ukraine, and the United States for ending the war in Ukraine will resume in Abu Dhabi on February 1, after the first round last weekend on ending the four-year war could not produce a breakthrough. The Kremlin said on Wednesday that a second round of Moscow-Kyiv peace talks between Russia, Ukraine, and the US will take place in the UAE capital Abu Dhabi on Feb. 1. “Negotiations are scheduled for Feb. 1. Well, tentatively, but that’s what we’re working with for now,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters, saying the talks will again take place in the Emirati capital. Peskov also denied that the parties involved in the negotiations are currently not discussing any list of documents and that discussions should continue behind closed doors. “These negotiations are on a very sensitive topic. They’re very complex negotiations. And discussing any specific segments publicly during the negotiations is detrimental to the negotiations,” he added. Peskov added that the Russian delegation receives regular instructions from the head of state but refused to share any further details about the negotiations. “We’re not discussing any lists of documents. We believe this should all be done discreetly, behind closed doors—which is what’s happening,” he added. Russia's human loss in the war against Ukraine is more than anything witnessed by a major nation since World War 2. According to a report from the Centre for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), 1.2 million Russian troops have either died, been wounded or gone missing since Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Moreover, data shows that Moscow has made only minor territorial gains in Ukraine in nearly four years of war. The amount of Ukrainian land under its control has increased by just 12 per cent since 2022. The report also questions the basis of certain assumptions, such as those made by the White House, that Russia is on the path to winning the war. The CSIS report says that Ukraine holds a significant advantage on the defensive side. US President Donald Trump told Politico in an interview, “Russia has the upper hand. They’re much bigger. They’re much stronger… At some point, size will win."
What gives Ukraine the upper hand?
The advantage Ukraine has comes from its defence strategies, using which it has managed to restrain Russia's attempts to make gains. The report states "trenches, anti-tank obstacles, mines and other barriers along with drones and artillery" have handed Kyiv the advantage in the war. Casualties on the battlefield also favour Ukraine, with the ratio being 2.5- or 2-to-1. Ukraine has suffered 500,000 to 600,000 casualties (wounded and missing), while the number for Russia stands at 1.2 million, according to the report. This includes 275,000 and 325,000 battlefield deaths for Moscow, compared to Ukraine’s 100,000 to 140,000.Also Read: Stripped and taped to trees in killer cold: Russian soldiers punished for refusing to follow orders
Report says Russia is not winning the Ukraine war
“The data suggests that Russia is hardly winning,” the authors wrote in the research. The country's human loss in Ukraine is five times higher than the combined toll in all other wars since 1945. The report states that this includes the Afghanistan war and the two Chechen wars. At the Davos Summit 2026, NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte said, "In the 1980s in Afghanistan, the Soviets lost 20,000 in 10 years. According to the report, Moscow is no longer one of the world’s economic powers, and has turned into "a second- or third-rate economic power." A decline in "manufacturing, weak consumer demand, high inflation and a shortage of labour" has contributed majorly towards it, with an economic growth of only 0.6% in 2025.
