The initial upper hand gained by the Russian forces in Bakhmut, the Ukrainian city which Moscow has spent months trying to capture, seems to have fizzled out as Kyiv’s counteroffensive has been successful in stalling the advances made by Kremlin.

On Friday, Ukraine's commander in chief Lt Gen Valerii Zaluzhnyi said in a Facebook post that the situation in the eastern city is “stabilising”.

Acknowledging that the situation on Ukraine's frontlines "is the toughest in the Bakhmut direction”, Lt Gen Zaluzhnyi said that due to the “tremendous efforts” of the Ukrainian forces “we are managing to stabilise the situation".

He posted on the social media network after briefing the UK's Chief of Defence Staff, Admiral Sir Tony Radakin, about the situation in Ukraine.

In recent months, the eastern city has become the centre of the biggest battle between Russia and Ukraine. For Moscow, Bakhmut is a key target in its plans to fully capture the industrialised eastern region of Donbas.

However, the long-drawn-out war yielded little results for the Russian offensive despite losing thousands of troops.

On Thursday, the commander of Ukraine’s ground forces, Oleksandr Syrsky, claimed that Russian forces were "exhausted" near Bakhmut, reports BBC.

He added that Russia is “losing significant strength", though it "has not given up hope of taking Bakhmut at all costs despite losses in manpower and equipment”.

"Very soon we will take advantage of this opportunity, like we did near Kyiv, Kharkiv, Balakliya and Kupiansk," he was quoted as saying, referring to successful Ukrainian counter-offensives last year.

However, despite Ukraine’s assertion that Moscow’s attack was flagging near Bakhmut, the Russian forces launched new assaults in the northern and southern stretches of the front in the Donbas region.

Heavy fighting was reported in the northern sector along a stretch of front running from Lyman to Kupiansk as well as in the south at Avdiivka on the outskirts of the Russian-held city of Donetsk.

Russia Ukraine War | Russian assault losing steam in Bakhmut: Kyiv

Former Russian president Dmitry Medvedev has suggested that the troops may have to march onto cities as far as Kyiv or Lviv in Ukraine amid reports that Moscow was facing significant setbacks in the battle in the east.

Former Russian president Dmitry Medvedev has suggested that the troops may have to march onto cities as far as Kyiv or Lviv in Ukraine amid reports that Moscow was facing significant setbacks in the battle in the east. Considered a strong ally of President Vladimir Putin, Medvedev's statement may have unwittingly given away the position Kremlin finds itself in currently. “Nothing can be ruled out here. If you need to get to Kyiv, then you need to go to Kyiv, if to Lviv, then you need to go to Lviv in order to destroy this infection,” Medvedev was quoted as saying by Russian news agency RIA Novosti. The battle for the eastern city of Bakhmut has significantly drained the resources of the Russian side, according to multiple media reports. Since the war began over a year ago, no place has witnessed a battle as fierce as Bakhmut. WATCH | Can Putin be arrested by the international criminal court? Medvedev, who served as Russia's president from 2008 to 2012, has emerged as one of the most hawkish leaders in recent times — routinely issuing blustery and hyperbolic statements. Earlier this week, he issued a hypersonic missile attack threat to the International Criminal Court (ICC) after the global organisation issued an arrest warrant against Putin. "I'm afraid, gentlemen, everyone is answerable to God and missiles. It's quite possible to imagine how a hypersonic Oniks fired from a Russian warship in the North Sea strikes the court building in the Hague," Medvedev wrote on Telegram. "It can't be shot down, I'm afraid. And the court is just a pathetic international organisation, not the people of a NATO country. So, they won't start a war. They'll be scared. And no one will be sorry." ALSO READ | Putin's top aide threatens 'hypersonic missile strike' on ICC after issuance of arrest warrant Putin's top ally previously said that a civil war will break out in the US in 2023 and that if Russia lost in the ongoing war, it could provoke the beginning of a 'nuclear war'. United States Secretary of State Antony Blinken on Wednesday said that China has not 'crossed the line' and provided Russia with substantial aid despite it ramping up diplomatic aid to Moscow. Blinken, who as per AFP, has for weeks warned that Beijing is considering Russia's request for weapons for the Ukraine war said that "as we speak today, we have not seen them cross that line." He said this in response to a question on whether China was providing "lethal aid" to Russia. Talking to lawmakers at a Senate committee, the top diplomat as per Reuters said that China was "very carefully" watching how Washington and the world respond to the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Blinken said that if Russia was allowed to attack Ukraine with impunity, it would "open a Pandora's box" for would-be aggressors and lead to a "world of conflict."

"The stakes in Ukraine go well beyond Ukraine. ... I think it has a profound impact in Asia, for example," he remarked.

Blinken's statement comes on the heels of a high-level meeting between Russia and China. Recently, 'dear friends' Chinese President Xi Jinping and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin met in Moscow to discuss the bilateral relations between the two nations.

United States Secretary of State Antony Blinken on Wednesday said that China has not 'crossed the line' and provided Russia with substantial aid despite it ramping up diplomatic aid to Moscow.

Blinken said that if Russia was allowed to attack Ukraine with impunity, it would "open a Pandora's box" for would-be aggressors and lead to a "world of conflict." China hasn't 'crossed line' to provide Russia 'lethal aid,' says top US diplomat Blinken

Moscow on Wednesday (March 22) slammed the United Kingdom over the supply of depleted uranium ammunition to Ukrainian forces amid the ongoing war and also warned of prospects of "serious escalation" and added that Russia would be forced to respond accordingly.

Russia slams UK for sending depleted uranium shells to Ukraine, calls it ‘serious escalation’

The United Kingdom (UK) has defended sending depleted uranium shells to war-torn Ukraine after Russian President Vladimir Putin's warning, according to a report by BBC early Wednesday (March 22). On Tuesday, Putin had said that Moscow would be forced to react if the UK gave Kyiv military supplies, including armour-piercing ammunition which contains depleted uranium.

"The United Kingdom... announced not only the supply of tanks to Ukraine but also shells with depleted uranium. If this happens, Russia will be forced to react," Putin told reporters after meeting his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping.

Earlier, the British government had confirmed that it would provide Ukraine with the armour-piercing rounds alongside Challenger two tanks, but insisted they have a low risk of radiation. A statement from the Ministry of Defence (MoD) said that depleted uranium is a standard component and has nothing to do with nuclear weapons, the BBC reported early Wednesday.

"Russia knows this but is deliberately trying to disinform. Independent research by scientists from groups such as the Royal Society has assessed that any impact to personal health and the environment from the use of depleted uranium munitions is likely to be low," the statement added.

Colonel Hamish de Breton-Gordon, a former British Army tank commander, said that Russian President Putin's comments were classic disinformation. Colonel Gordon said that depleted uranium rounds used by Challenger 2 tanks contained only trace elements of depleted uranium, the report added.

Depleted uranium is a by-product of the nuclear enriching process used to make nuclear fuel or nuclear weapons. It is around 60 per cent as radioactive as natural uranium. Its heaviness lends itself to use in armour-piercing rounds as it helps them easily penetrate steel.

However, the United Nations Environment Programme has described it as a "chemically and radiologically toxic heavy metal."

CND, an anti-nuclear organisation, condemned the decision to send armour-piercing ammunition to Ukraine, calling it an "additional environmental and health disaster for those living through the conflict".

CND general secretary Kate Hudson said that the organisation repeatedly called for the British government "to place an immediate moratorium on the use of depleted uranium weapons and to fund long-term studies into their health and environmental impacts," the news agency AFP reported.

As Xi meets Putin, Ukraine's Zelensky invites China to join Kyiv's peace formula

Chinese President Xi Jinping departed Moscow on Wednesday (March 22) after his crucial state visit during which he held talks with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin. The visit was highly significant amid the ongoing geopolitical tensions as the two nations showed a unified front against the West.

Putin and Xi called each other "dear friends" and hailed a "new era" in their nations' ties. The leaders discussed a range of issues of mutual interest and signed a few economic proposals, but there was no apparent breakthrough on ending the war in Ukraine despite Beijing touting it a "visit for peace".

Moreover, the joint statement, which was issued after Putin and Xi's meeting, hints that both nations want to keep the ongoing Ukraine conflict away from the G20 by not raising or mentioning it. The statement issued following meeting of Putin and Jinping indicates the two countries will jointly oppose the raising of the Ukraine crisis at the G20, just as they have done at two key ministerial meetings hosted by India.

The joint statement stated that Russia and China support the G20 format as an "important forum" for discussing international economic cooperation issues and anti-crisis response measures.

It also mentioned that they will jointly promote the invigorated spirit of solidarity and cooperation within the G20, and support the leading role of the association in such areas as the international fight against epidemics, world economic recovery, inclusive sustainable development, etc.

The statement also stated that they stand against attempts by external forces to undermine security and stability in their "common adjacent regions".

Chinese President Xi Jinping wrapped up his whirlwind tour of Russia on Thursday and departed for Beijing, reported Russian news agencies. Xi received a guard of honour at Moscow's Vnukovo airport as Russian and Chinese national anthems were played in the background. Xi arrived in Moscow on Monday to meet his Russian counterpart, President Vladimir Putin. The leaders attempted to strengthen bilateral relations while sending a message that the two powerful nations were not cowering down in face of threats issued by the western countries. Targetting western bloc The joint statement issued after the summit took potshots at the western countries by terming them as the 'confrontational bloc' which did not want the war to end. “Russia reaffirmed that it was committed to restarting peace talks as soon as possible, and China expressed its approval,” read an excerpt from the joint statement. “Settlement of the Ukraine crisis must respect the reasonable security concerns of every country and prevent the formation of confrontational blocs that add fuel to the flames,” it added. China’s peace plan for Ukraine Since the Russia-Ukraine war broke out, China has established a "no-limits" friendship with Russia where it has refused to denounce Moscow's aggressiveness, all the while presenting itself as impartial. However, prior to Xi's arrival in Russia, Beijing had prepared a 12-point peace plan for ending the war. The paper reiterates Beijing's talking points for Ukraine. However, the western world is wary that Beijing's plan will allow Putin to “freeze” its territorial gains in the country. Facing severe economic sanctions and being isolated on the world stage, the visit by Xi may have come as a booster shot of confidence for Putin. Increased bonhomie between Russia-China The summit between the duo was marked by pomp as the exchanges suggested a growing bonhomie. During one of the meetings, Xi said he was convinced that the Russian people will be voting en masse for the Kremlin chief in next year's presidential election. "I know Russia will hold a presidential election," said Xi in Mandarin. "Under your strong leadership, Russia has made great strides in its prosperous development. I am confident that the Russian people will continue to give you their firm support." While Xi called Putin a 'dear friend', the latter jokingly said he was 'envious' of the progress made by Beijing in recent times. "In recent years, China has made a tremendous leap forward in its development," Putin said. "It arouses genuine interest all over the world, and even we envy you a little." Russia’s Kalibr cruise missiles destroyed in Crimea explosion, Ukraine’s role suspected

Russia reacted angrily on Friday (March 17) on Poland and Slovakia'a decision to provide fighter jets to Ukraine, warning they will be "destroyed".

"The supply of this military equipment -- as we have repeatedly said -- will not change the outcome of the special military operation... Of course, all this equipment will be destroyed," Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told journalists, using the official term for Russian invasion of Ukraine.

West's supply of weapons to Ukraine has always angered Moscow, which had accused the western countries to try to prolong the conflict. Russia attacked Ukraine in February last year. After sustained gains in the initial months of the war, Russian forces had to retreat from large swathes of land. In addition to efforts by Ukrainian forces, Russian retreat was also attributed to Western help in the form of humanitarian aid and weapons.

Ukraine's European backers had stopped short of providing fighter jets to Ukraine for fears of escalation of the conflict. But now, Slovakia and Poland have agreed to provide fighter jets to Ukraine.

"We will hand over 13 of our MiG-29 jets to Ukraine," Slovak Prime Minister Eduard Heger told journalists on Friday, adding that Bratislava would also deliver a Kub air defence system to Ukraine.

"We're giving these MiGs to Ukraine so that it can protect civilians against the many bombs that fall on their houses and which are the reason why people are dying in Ukraine," Heger said.

Poland on Thursday said Warsaw would send four Soviet-made MiG-29 jets to Ukraine "in the coming days".

Ukraine has long requested fighter jets from Western allies, although seeking primarily modern US-made F-16s.

On Friday, the international criminal court announced an arrest warrant for Vladimir Putin. The warrant against the Russian President is based on the war crime accusation of unlawfully deporting Ukrainian children. The Hague-based court said it had also issued a warrant against Maria Vovabilova, Russia's presidential commissioner for children's rights. According to Kyiv, over 16,000 children have been deported to Russia. The International Criminal Court said judges found there were reasonable grounds to suspect Putin's criminal responsibility.

Putin, Xi to sign declaration as Russia-China ties enter 'new era': Kremlin

Russian Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu, on Friday (March 17) awarded the two pilots who were involved in intercepting a United States MQ-9 Reaper drone over the Black Sea amid Moscow’s ongoing “special military operation” in Ukraine. This comes after the US has previously accused Russia of an “unsafe” and “unprofessional” intercept of its MQ-9 Reaper surveillance drone which eventually crashed in the Black Sea on Tuesday.

The Russian military has said that they scrambled the air defence unit jets after detecting the US drone but has denied causing the crash and said that the unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) had lost control, a claim the US disputed. While repeating its version of the events, the Russian ministry announced the awards on Friday.

“As a result of sharp manoeuvring around 9:30 am (Moscow time), the MQ-9 unmanned aerial vehicle went into uncontrolled flight with a loss of altitude and collided with the water surface,” said the Russian military in a statement, as per Reuters.

The defence minister Shoigu presented the awards to the two Su-27 pilots for “preventing” the US drone from “violating” international airspace restrictions placed by Moscow amid what it describes as its “special military operation” in Ukraine, reported The Moscow Times.

The statement added, “The drone flew with its transponders off, violating the boundaries of the area of the temporary airspace usage regime established for the special military operation (and) communicated to all users of international airspace.”

The US military, which also released a 42-second video on Thursday of the incident said that the drone was on a routine mission when it was intercepted over the Black Sea in international airspace. It also alleged that the fighter jets dumped fuel on the drone during the encounter that lasted 30-40 minutes before one of MQ-9 Reaper drone’s propellers got damaged and it crashed into the sea.

Russian Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu, on Friday (March 17) awarded the two pilots who were involved in intercepting a United States MQ-9 Reaper drone over the Black Sea amid Moscow’s ongoing “special military operation” in Ukraine.

The statement added, “The drone flew with its transponders off, violating the boundaries of the area of the temporary airspace usage regime established for the special military operation (and) communicated to all users of international airspace.” The US military, which also released a 42-second video on Thursday of the incident said that the drone was on a routine mission when it was intercepted over the Black Sea in international airspace. It also alleged that the fighter jets dumped fuel on the drone during the encounter that lasted 30-40 minutes before one of MQ-9 Reaper drone’s propellers got damaged and it crashed into the sea. In a recent video released by Russian state media, students in Crimea are seen training with rifles and practicing hand-to-hand fighting. The session appears to be a component of a military training programme in which students from various grade levels are enrolled.

Students are seen handling rifles in the footage, which was first made public by RIA Novosti Crimea. The students disassemble, clean, and reload the firearms, which resemble Kalashnikov rifles, as reported by Business Insider.

The video then switches to a hand-to-hand fighting drill. Nine students demonstrate fundamental martial arts stances throughout the course while holding weapons that resemble Kalashnikov rifles.

"Now, more than 60 people are engaged in martial arts, drill training, including kindergarten students and school children," according to Vladimir Konstantinov, speaker of the Parliament of the Republic of Crimea.

"Children show great interest in activities," Konstantinov added. The translation also says: "An electronic shooting range was equipped in the institution for conducting shooting classes."

According to senior reporter Will Vernon of the BBC News Moscow Bureau, the military education programme at the Crimean school is a prototype that will be introduced in secondary schools across the nation later this year.

Since Russian President Vladimir Putin's invasion of Ukraine more than a year ago, there has been an increase in the military's participation in Russian schools, and this course is the most recent example of this.

After Poland, Slovakia to send 13 MiG-29 fighter jets to war-torn Ukraine; Kremlin reacts

The Ukrainian government has invited Florida Governor Ron DeSantis to visit the war-torn country after he called Russia's offensive a "territorial dispute." Taking to Twitter on Tuesday (March 14), Ukraine's foreign ministry spokesperson Oleg Nikolenko criticised DeSantis' remarks and invited the Republican leader.

"We are sure that as a former military officer deployed to a combat zone, Governor DeSantis knows the difference between a ‘dispute’ and war. We invite him to visit Ukraine to get a deeper understanding of Russia’s full-scale invasion and the threats it poses to US interests," Nikolenko tweeted.

On Monday, Ron DeSantis said that protecting Ukraine was not vital for the United States. DeSantis, a likely presidential candidate for 2024, said that Washington had many vital national interests" but that "becoming further entangled in a territorial dispute between Ukraine and Russia is not one of them."

Ukraine invites Florida Governor Ron DeSantis to visit after he called Russian invasion ‘territorial dispute’

Russian President Vladimir Putin's verbal attack on the West rose to a crescendo for yet another time on Tuesday when he defended the war in Ukraine, saying it is the question of Russia's very existence as a state.

He made these remarks in a long address to workers at an aviation factory in Buryatia, a mountainous Russian republic in eastern Siberia, some 4,400 km east of the capital city of Moscow.

Russian president said that the Ukraine war is more than just a geopolitical task. "So, for us, this is not a geopolitical task, but a task of the survival of Russian statehood, creating conditions for the future development of the country and our children," Putin said in his address.
