IAF pulls off 24hr non-stop rescue mission; flies 9600 km to rescue 192 from conflict-stricken Sudan

Sudan’s two warring forces — The Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) — have announced a seven-day ceasefire even as mass exodus continued and death toll breached the 500-mark.

In a statement on Tuesday, South Sudan’s foreign ministry said that both sides would send representatives for peace talks “to be held at an agreed venue of their choice”, reports CNN.

However, it is unclear whether the warring forces would abide by the truce as similar ceasefire announcements have failed to yield any results in the past.

Moreover, the SAF and RSF are yet to respond to the South Sudan ministry’s statement through their official channels.

The latest announcement comes after the UN’s refugee agency (UNHCR) warned that more than 800,000 people may flee to neighboring countries, as the ongoing violence stifles evacuation convoys from key ports in Sudan.

According to estimates, 73,000 refugees — mostly women and children — have already fled Sudan to neighboring countries like Chad, Egypt, South Sudan and the Central African Republic, amidst fears of regional instability.

United Nations estimates over 800,000 could flee Sudan if fighting continues

Concerns over shortages of food, water, and medical supplies, have triggered the mass exodus. The fighting has also rendered all hospitals useless, as many of them are not operational, or in some way damaged.

According to reports, the fuel crisis has paved the way for black market trade, forcing many people to abandon their vehicles and trudge on foot to escape.

World Health Organization (WHO) regional director Ahmed al-Mandhari said that health facilities have come under attack in Khartoum, and some are even being used as military bases.

"Up to now there were around 26 reported attacks on healthcare facilities. Some of these attacks resulted in the death of healthcare workers and civilians in these hospitals," he told the BBC.

The ongoing armed conflict between two generals — General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and Chief General Mohamed Hamdan Dagaloof of the paramilitary group RSF — began on April 15.

The conflict has already crossed into the third week, and since it started, has resulted in the death of at least 528 people. As per estimates by the Sudanese health ministry, an additional 4,599 have been injured in the fighting.

Sudan’s warring army and paramilitary force agree to seven-day truce, says South Sudan

The Sudan crisis continues to escalate and considering the current security situation in the African country, India has temporarily relocated its embassy from the violence-hit capital city of Khartoum to Port Sudan.

Indian Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said on Tuesday: "In view of the prevailing security situation in Sudan, including attacks in Khartoum city, it has been decided that the Indian Embassy in Khartoum will be temporarily relocated to Port Sudan."

"The situation will be assessed in the light of further developments," the MEA further added. Port Sudan is a port city on the Red Sea in eastern Sudan and is located at a distance of around 850 kilometres from Khartoum.

The embassy was shifted after news agency Reuters reported that India's embassy in Khartoum was stormed and looted, Sudan's army said in a statement, citing a report from the ambassador. But the incident hasn't been conformed by India yet.

The report further added that Saudi Arabia's foreign ministry said early on Wednesday that its building in Khartoum that houses its cultural mission was similarly vandalised and looted by an armed group.

Sudan conflict: UN chief sending envoy to nation as fighting continues

A family fleeing conflict-torn Sudan said they are among thousands of people stuck at the Egypt border as drivers are demanding $40,000 to hire a bus to travel across, according to a report by BBC on Saturday (April 29). The family had escaped the fighting in Sudan's capital city Khartoum. Speaking to the BBC from the border town of Wadi Halfa, Fadi Atabani said his family, which includes an 88-year-old woman, were trapped.

"There are thousands of people here. There is no accommodation. People are sleeping in schools or [on] mattresses," Atabani said. As per the report, most of the family members have British nationality and Atabani has been appealing to authorities in the United Kingdom (UK) for help.

"I cannot guarantee my children's medical health here we are in the middle of the desert. I want the British government to assist me in evacuating or a bus which can get us across the border," Atabani said and accused local bus drivers of taking advantage of the desperate situation travellers have found themselves in.

He said that normally, the cost of hiring a bus is $3,000, but at present people are paying $40,000.

"Who has that sort of money? The banks were closed, ATM machines are not working," he further told the BBC.

Hosna, a resident of Khartoum, said she had two daughters trapped in Sudan's capital city. Hosna said her daughters had to pay $400 each to travel to the border compared to $25 before the conflict in Sudan began on April 15. The woman arrived in Egypt Aswan's city before the fighting started.

"My daughters saw an artillery shell fall in our neighbourhood. I could not bring them here. I don't have a husband or a son to help them. I work day in and day out to save money," she added.

Esraa Bani, a Sudanese-American academic, who flew to the Egyptian city to help people arriving, said the bus prices increased astronomically.

Fighting in Sudan is raging despite the two warring factions — Sudan's army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) — agreeing to extend the ceasefire by another 72 hours. On Saturday, warplanes on bombing raids drew heavy anti-aircraft fire over Khartoum.

Speaking to the news agency AFP, a witness in southern Khartoum said, "We woke up once again to the sound of fighter jets and anti-aircraft weapons blasting all over our neighbourhood."

Another witness, meanwhile, told AFP that fighting has been going on since early morning, especially around the state broadcaster's headquarters in Omdurman.

Sudan conflict: Bus drivers demanding $40,000 to help people cross Egypt border, says report

The United States' first coordinated efforts to evacuate its private citizens from Sudan took place on Friday when a convoy of buses carrying approximately 300 Americans departed the war-torn capital of Khartoum and began a 525-mile journey to the Red Sea.

Armed American drones flew high above the convoy, keeping a close eye out for potential threats. After securing security guarantees from the enemies, the United Nations and numerous other countries have also evacuated their citizens overland, reported The New York Times.

It raised new concerns about why the United States had taken so long to plan a civilian evacuation from Sudan, which was home to approximately 16,000 Americans, many of whom were dual nationals, when Western and Persian Gulf allies had moved faster and evacuated many more people.

Starting Tuesday, Britain has evacuated 1,573 people, the majority of whom are British citizens, from an airfield north of Khartoum. Another 1,700 people were airlifted out of harm's way by Germany and France. According to Saudi authorities, at least 3,000 more people from various nations were evacuated by boat from Port Sudan to Jeddah.

Other nations are already reducing their evacuation efforts as the U.S. steps up its own. Due to a "significant decline" in demand for seats, Britain announced on Friday that it would stop operating its airlift at 6 pm on Saturday.

The disparity could be a result of the American government taking a more cautious approach to airlifting civilians out of an unpredictably chaotic conflict zone with no clearly defined front lines. This concern appeared to be partially justified on Friday when Turkey reported that one of its military aircraft had come under fire as it landed at the airfield on the edge of Khartoum.

Other Americans have made it to the border on their own by road, crossing into Egypt and Ethiopia, joining tens of thousands of Sudanese who have made the same journey. The United States has assisted American citizens in getting seats on flights out of Khartoum organised by allied nations, and occasionally on convoys going through Khartoum to the airfield.

Sudanese army, RSF agree to extend truce by 72 hours

As the conflict continues to rage in Khartoum between the Sudanese army and its paramilitary group Rapid Support Forces (RSF), countries across the world are scrambling to evacuate their citizens from the African nation.

US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin said Friday that US troops were positioned near Sudan to ensure safety for the Americans. "We always want to make sure that we're doing prudent planning, which is what we're doing," Austin said.

"We've deployed some forces into the theater to ensure that we provide as many options as possible if we are called on to do something. We haven't been called on to do anything yet."

According to World Health Organization, at least 413 people have died so far in the crossfire and 3,551 are left injured.

The announcement of the evacuation of US embassy personnel comes hours after the foreign ministry of Saudi Arabia said that about 150 people were rescued from Sudan and safely arrived in Jeddah.

Among those who arrived safely were diplomats and officials from several countries, including India. Saudi Arabia's naval forces coordinated the evacuation of these civilians.

As per the Kingdom's foreign ministry, as many as 91 of those evacuated were Saudi citizens and about 66 citizens from 12 other nations.

Moreover, people from Kuwait, Pakistan, Bangladesh, the Philippines, Canada, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Egypt, Tunisia, and Burkina Faso were also evacuated, as reported by the Hindustan Times.

Sudan: France begins evacuation of embassy staff, citizens of 'European and allied partner' nations

A United States diplomatic convoy came under fire as the power struggle between the Sudanese army and its paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) continues in Khartoum; the incident has since been confirmed by Washington’s top diplomat. In a press conference, on Tuesday (April 18), the US Secretary of State Antony Blinken called the attack “reckless” and “irresponsible”.

What did Blinken say?

Washington’s top diplomat who is currently in the midst of attending the Group of Seven (G7) wealthy nations meeting in Japan also denounced “indiscriminate military operations” as the unrest in the Sudanese capital city of Khartoum, enters its fourth day. “I can confirm that yesterday we had an American diplomatic convoy that was fired on,” said Blinken.

The attack took place on clearly marked embassy vehicles, on Monday, while preliminary reports suggest that the assailants were from the RSF, said the US’ top diplomat.

He also went on to say that the people in the diplomatic convoy were safe, adding, “We have deep concerns of course about the overall security environment as it affects civilians, as it affects diplomats, as it affects aid workers.”

Washington’s top diplomat warns Sudan

The incident has since prompted a direct warning from Blinken who called RSF leader General Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, known as Hemedti, and Sudan’s army chief General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan. Speaking about the call, the US’ top diplomat said, “I made very clear that any attacks threats, dangerous posed to our diplomats were totally unacceptable.”

So far, more than 200 people have been killed and more than 1,800 injured since the fighting erupted, said the United Nations. The attack on the US convoy also comes after a European Union ambassador in Sudan was “assaulted” in his own residence, foreign policy chief Josep Borrell wrote on Twitter.

He added, “Security of diplomatic premises and staff is a primary responsibility of Sudanese authorities and an obligation under international law.” The EU ambassador, in question, was veteran Irish diplomat Aidan O'Hara. However, an EU spokeswoman Nabila Massrali told AFP that he was "OK" following the assault.

RSF’s response to Blinken’s call

The RSF leader, Dagalo while acknowledging the calls for a “temporary ceasefire” from friendly nations as well as after the conversation with Blinken, took to Twitter and wrote, “The RSF reaffirms its approval of a 24 HR armistice to ensure the safe passage of civilians and the evacuation of the wounded.”

However, in subsequent tweets, he accused the Sudanese Armed Forces of failing to “honor this ceasefire, bombing densely populated areas from the air and endangering civilian lives. These actions are a flagrant violation of the foundations and principles of international and humanitarian law.”

Sudan’s military claims situation is ‘fully under control’

Meanwhile, a spokesperson of the Sudanese military, as per the state-run Sudan TV, claimed that the situation was under control.

The broadcaster aired a phone call with Brigadier General Nabil Abdullah, where he claimed the situation was “fully under control,” on Tuesday.

He added that the Sudanese Military “don’t want to expand our operations at this step.” Abdullah also reportedly said that the army is “worried about our citizens being hurt or there being civilian victims because of this conflict”.

Sudan unrest: World Food Programme suspends work following death of 3 staff members

An analysis by Reporters Without Borders (RSF) has revealed that nearly 1700 journalists were killed across the globe in the past 20 years. This comes to an average of more than 80 per year.

The Paris-based media rights campaigners said that the two decades between the years 2003 and 2022 were "especially deadly decades for those in the service of the right to inform"

"Behind the figures, there are the faces, personalities, talent and commitment of those who have paid with their lives for their information gathering, their search for the truth and their passion for journalism," RSF secretary-general Christophe Deloire said.

RSF said that Iraq and Syria were the most dangerous countries to work as a journalist. According to the analysis, these two countries have accounted for "a combined total of 578 journalists killed in the past 20 years, or more than a third of the worldwide total"

Iraq and Syria were followed by Mexico (125 killed), the Philippines (107), Pakistan (93), Afghanistan (81) and Somalia (78).

RSF said that 2012 and 2013 were the "darkest years". There were 144 killings in 2012 and 142 the year after. In the report, they have been attributed "in large measure" to the war in Syria.

This peak was "followed by a gradual fall and then historically low figures from 2019 onwards".

Putin's influence

But deaths increased again in 2022, in part because of the war in Ukraine. So far this year, 58 journalists have been killed doing their jobs, up from 51 in 2021.

Eight journalists have been killed in Ukraine since Russia invaded in February. This compares to a total of 12 media deaths there over the preceding 19 years.

Ukraine is currently the most dangerous country in Europe for the media, after Russia itself, where 25 journalists have been killed over the past 20 years.

"Since (President) Vladimir Putin took over, Russia has seen systematic attacks on press freedom -– including deadly ones –- as RSF has repeatedly reported.

"They include Anna Politkovskaya's high-profile murder on 7 October 2006," the rights group said.

533 that's the number of journalists that have been jailed around the world just in the past year according to Reporters Without Borders or the RSF.

RSF: Number of journalists imprisoned worldwide hits new record

The number of journalists imprisoned hit a record high this year, said media watchdog Reporters Without Borders (RSF). According to the RSF’s annual round-up of violence and abuses against journalists, more than one journalist was killed every week in 2022 and up to December 1, the number of journalists killed was 20 per cent higher than the same time last year.

At least 533 journalists are currently detained across the world which is up from 488 last year which was already a record high, said the report by the Paris-based watchdog, published on Wednesday. It also called China, “the world’s biggest jailer of journalists” with a total of 110 journalists who are currently in prison. This was followed by Myanmar (62), Iran (47), Vietnam (39) and Belarus (31).

Among those imprisoned at least three-quarters are in Asia and the Middle East, said the report, while a little over one-third of the imprisoned media workers, across the world, have been convicted. However, the remaining two-thirds are being detained without trial. “Some of them have been waiting for their trial for more than 20 years,” said the RSF.

The RSF also mentioned the longest sentence recorded by the watchdog in 2022, which has been handed to Ivan Safronov, a Russian investigative journalist who has been convicted for revealing “state secrets” and sentenced to 22 years in prison.

Furthermore, the number of women journalists imprisoned has also risen from 60 to 78 since 2021 which the report has largely attributed to the number of women entering the profession.

Notably, the RSF has been publishing the annual report since 1995 and highlighted the unprecedented move by Iran which has locked at least 34, media professionals, since the beginning of the countrywide protests in September. The demonstrations broke out following the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini who allegedly died in custody after being detained by the country’s morality police.

“Dictatorial and authoritarian regimes are filling their prisons faster than ever by jailing journalists,” said RSF Secretary-General, Christophe Deloire. He added, “This new record in the number of detained journalists confirms the pressing and urgent need to resist these unscrupulous governments and to extend our active solidarity to all those who embody the ideal of journalistic freedom, independence and pluralism.”

The report also said that 57 media workers have been killed in 2022 which is an 18.8 per cent increase when compared to 48 last year. This increase has been attributed to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, while numbers are up from the “historic lows” of 48 and 50 in the last two years, respectively.

At least eight journalists were killed while reporting about the conflict in the first six months while more than 60 per cent of media workers lost their lives in countries that are considered to be at peace. Reportedly, seven female journalists were killed this year which constitutes 12 per cent of all victims.

Meanwhile, Mexico topped the list where a total of 11 journalists were killed this year which is almost 20 per cent of those killed across the world. This was followed by Haiti (6) and Brazil (3) which contributed to making the Americas the world’s most dangerous region for media in 2022, accounting for 47.5 per cent of all deaths worldwide.

The report also noted that at least 65 journalists and media workers are currently being held hostage and nearly 49 journalists are missing. In 2022, 80 per cent of media workers across the world were “deliberately targeted” for their work or the stories they were covering, including organised crime and corruption cases, said the report.

Number of journalists imprisoned hits record high; more than one killed every week in 2022: RSF

Reporters Without Borders (RSF) has denounced Beijing for taking a "hypocritical stance" after the Chinese authorities accused the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) of broadcasting "fake news" while covering Henan floods.

During a presser on Thursday, China's foreign ministry spokesperson Zhao Lijian called BBC a "bad-mouthing broadcasting corporation" which has "vilified" China and deserves to be "unpopular with the Chinese public" as it produces "fake news".

This statement came just days after the youth division of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) published online death threats against foreign journalists covering the floods in central China's Henan province, triggering a wave of physical, verbal and online harassment against them.

"China, one of the world's worst abusers of press freedom, has no journalism lessons to give to the BBC, and is showing outrageous hypocrisy by accusing it of broadcasting "fake news" while it is itself the world's number one exporter of propaganda contents", says the head of RSF East Asia bureau, Cedric Alviani, who deplores "the growing habit of authoritarian regimes who systematically brand factual information which don't match the official narrative as fake news".

RSF in a statement said that the Chinese state media are statutorily compelled to relay the CCP's propaganda contents. On the contrary, the UK's public broadcaster BBC practices fact-based journalism and its editorial freedom is protected by an independent board, the group added.

"In recent years, the Chinese regime has increased intimidation, harassment and surveillance on foreign correspondents, their local assistants and their sources. In 2020, at least 18 correspondents were forced to leave the country and several foreign journalists' visa requests were denied without explanation," the statement added.

Earlier this year, China banned BBC World News and senior BBC correspondent John Sudworth was forced to flee the country.

In a report titled "China's Pursuit of a New World Media Order" published in 2019, RSF revealed Beijing's strategy to control information beyond its borders, a project that poses a threat to press freedom throughout the world.
