This was amid the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine, and months before the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza, both of which continue to rage on, but the conflict in Sudan has mostly been overlooked and the impact is devastating.&nbsp;

In one year, more than 8.5 million Sudanese have been forced to flee their homes, which has led to one of the world’s largest displacement crises, according to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).&nbsp;

The war has also pushed millions into extreme hunger, triggered waves of ethnically driven killings and sexual violence in Sudan’s Darfur region, and reportedly left millions of Sudanese children in the line of fire.&nbsp;

<h2>Humanitarian situation&nbsp;</h2>

Nearly two million out of the at least 8.5 million displaced have fled across the border into neighbouring South Sudan, Chad, Central African Republic, Egypt, Uganda and Ethiopia, according to the data by the UN.&nbsp;

South Sudan is hosting most of the refugees from Sudan with around 640,000 people, and 1,800 people are still arriving every day, according to the UNHCR.&nbsp;

“Sudan has experienced the almost complete destruction of its urban middle class: architects, doctors, teachers, nurses, engineers, and students have lost everything,” said UNHCR spokesperson Olga Sarrado.&nbsp;

Speaking about the situation on the ground, Sarrado said that “access constraints, security risks and logistical challenges are hampering the humanitarian response.”&nbsp;

The UNHCR spokesperson also noted that the situation for women and children is particularly alarming as they are arriving in “remote areas with little to nothing and in desperate need of food, water, shelter and medical care.”

“Parents and children have witnessed or experienced appalling violence, making psychosocial support a priority,” said Sarrado.&nbsp;

Half of the children in Sudan are currently or have been within five kilometres of the front lines of the fighting and have been left vulnerable to “gunfire, shelling, air strikes and other violence,” said a report by the United Kingdom-based charity, Save the Children.&nbsp;

More than 10 million children have been exposed to bombings, missile strikes, and direct attacks, since the beginning of the war, according to the analysis by the Armed Conflict Location and Event Data Project (ACLED) and the UK-based charity.&nbsp;

“Children in Sudan have suffered unimaginably – they have seen killings, massacres, bullet-littered streets, dead bodies and shelled homes while they live with the all-too-real fear that they, themselves, could be killed, injured, recruited to fight or subject to sexual violence,” said Dr Arif Noor, Save the Children’s head in Sudan.&nbsp;

Sudan, according to the UN, is facing the largest child displacement crisis in the world. One in three has lost school access and out of the 25 million people in need of humanitarian assistance and support, 14 million are children.&nbsp;

Several aid agencies and their workers in Sudan have raised the alarm saying that the war-torn country is headed towards a larger-scale calamity of starvation and could see mass deaths because of it in the upcoming months.&nbsp;

Tens of thousands of people or even hundreds of thousands could die in the upcoming months due to malnutrition-related causes, said Justin Brady, head of the OCHA in Sudan.&nbsp;

“This is going to get very ugly very quickly unless we can overcome both the resource challenges and the access challenges,” Brady said.&nbsp;

He also called on the international community to ask both sides to stop fighting and raise funds for the UN humanitarian effort in the war-torn country. Sarrado also noted that the “funding remains critically low”.

However, the international community has paid little attention as the UN agency which needs some $2.7 billion this year to get food and other humanitarian aid for 24 million Sudanese people has only received $145 million, according to OCHA.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, the food prices in the war-torn country have risen by 45 per cent in less than a year due to less production, stalled imports, and the movement of food being impacted by the fighting, said OCHA.&nbsp;

<h2>‘A forgotten crisis’</h2>

The “level of international neglect is shocking,” Christos Christou, president of Doctors Without Borders (MSF), in a statement.&nbsp;

According to the medical charity, only 20-30 per cent of health facilities are functioning across the country. Therefore, with most of the country’s health system collapsed there have been reports of outbreaks of diseases including measles and cholera.&nbsp;

However, with most of the international community focusing towards the Middle East, and before that on the Ukraine war, the situation in Sudan has significantly deteriorated.&nbsp;

“Sudan is described as a forgotten crisis. I’m starting to wonder how many people knew about it in the first place to forget about it,” said Brady, as quoted by the Associated Press.&nbsp;

He added, “There are others that have more attention than Sudan. I don’t like to compare crises. It’s like comparing two cancer patients...They both need to be treated.”

The fighting that tore through the Sudanese capital after April 15, also spread to Darfur and to the state of Gezira state, which turned into an aid hub where many have sought refuge.&nbsp;

Outside of Khartoum, the western region of Darfur has also witnessed atrocities including killings, displacement and rape. RSF and its allies have been accused of rampant sexual violence and ethnic attacks on African tribes’ areas in the region.&nbsp;

Earlier this year, a report by the UN said that a series of attacks on the ethnic African Masalit tribe killed between 10,000 and 15,000 people in Geneina, the capital of West Darfur.&nbsp;

At least 159 cases of rape and gang rape have been reported in the past year, nearly all of them in Khartoum and Darfur. The head of the Sudanese Unit for Combating Violence Against Women, a government organisation, Sulima Sharifm, said that the figures are just the tip of the iceberg.&nbsp;

Ahmed, 50, who had fled with his wife and four children from Khartoum told Reuters about his ordeal to get out of the war-torn country.&nbsp;

The 50-year-old said RSF troops pulled them from a car as they tried to escape Wad Madani to seize their vehicle and even lost his 75-year-old mother-in-law after the arduous, three-day journey.&nbsp;

He then paid smugglers to come to Egypt. Notably, Cairo had suspended visa-free entry for women, children, and men over 50 after the war broke out and Sudanese poured into the country.&nbsp;

“Because of Al-Burhan and Hemedti, our lives were completely shattered. We lost everything we owned,” he told Reuters over the phone from Cairo.

<h2>No end in sight&nbsp;</h2>

Over the past year, there have been sporadic interventions between Sudan’s warring factions led by army chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and the head of the RSF Mohamed Hamdan “Hemedti” Dagalo.&nbsp;&nbsp;

In the initial months, the warring sides had agreed on brief pauses in fighting offering some respite to the citizens, but it was often short-lived after ceasefires agreed upon in Jeddah after mediations by the United States and Saudi Arabia, were repeatedly violated and the process faltered.&nbsp;

While Hemedti’s forces have overrun much of Darfur, al-Burhan has moved the government and his headquarters to the Red Sea city of Port Sudan.

“Both warring parties have committed serious violations of international human rights and humanitarian law, amounting in some cases to war crimes and other atrocity crimes,” said Human Rights Watch, in a statement.&nbsp;

The international organisation has called on countries to tackle the “shamefully low levels of humanitarian funding”.

The United States, on Sunday (Apr 14) ahead of the meeting of European diplomats in Paris to mark the first anniversary of the devastating conflict, announced that it would announce an additional $100 million in aid for the war-torn country, reported Reuters.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock, said that Berlin would provide $260 million in humanitarian aid to Sudan, in Paris, on Monday (Apr 15).&nbsp;

“We can manage together to avoid a terrible famine catastrophe, but only if we get active together now,” Baerbock said, adding that the worst-case scenario, one million people could die of hunger this year.&nbsp;

During the conference, French Foreign Minister Stéphane Séjourné noted that the Sudanese crisis has been pushed into the background.

“It is obvious that the series of crises - I am thinking of Gaza and Ukraine - have pushed the Sudanese crisis into the background,” Séjourné said.&nbsp;

Washington also determined that the RSF and allied militias committed crimes against humanity and ethnic cleansing, Blinken said in a statement.

The fighting, which broke out in mid-April, has displaced more than 6.5 million inside and outside Sudan, killed more than 10,000 and decimated the economy.

"The expansion of the needless conflict between RSF and the SAF has caused grievous human suffering," Blinken said, referring to the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF).

He called on the parties to "stop this conflict now, comply with their obligations under international humanitarian and human rights law, and hold accountable those responsible for atrocities."

The RSF has been accused of leading an ethnic massacre in West Darfur, and in the capital Khartoum residents have accused the paramilitary force of looting, rape and imprisoning civilians.

"Masalit civilians have been hunted down and left for dead in the streets, their homes set on fire, and told that there is no place in Sudan for them," Blinken said. The Masalit are a non-Arab tribe.

Meanwhile, the army has carried out an intense campaign of air and artillery strikes on residential neighbourhoods, where the RSF has occupied, which experts say could be violations of international law.

"Detainees have been abused and some killed at SAF and RSF detention sites," Blinken added.

The official determination follows a detailed legal process and analysis led by the US&nbsp;State Department but does not automatically come with punitive actions and therefore has no immediate consequences for the parties.

The decision comes after Saudi and U.S.-brokered talks aimed at halting fighting between Sudan's warring parties faltered again, and the country's army and the RSF have pressed on with military campaigns.

Reuters has chronicled the ethnically targeted violence committed this year by the RSF and its allied Arab militias in West Darfur, in particular in the city of El Geneina.

The RSF has been accused of an ethnic massacre in West Darfur.

The United States and Saudi Arabia suspended talks in June after numerous ceasefire violations.

"Both sides privately indicated that they are ready to resume talks," said one of the US&nbsp;officials, adding that months of fighting and a humanitarian crisis had weighed on both sides.

Eyewitnesses say that the pace of fighting has slowed in the past week, with both sides resorting to long-range artillery that have rained projectiles on residential neighbourhoods.

Military sources say the army has struggled to make repairs to ageing warplanes while the RSF has struggled to treat wounded soldiers. Both have had difficulty paying their exhausted forces, the sources said.

The African Union and regional body IGAD would be joining the Jeddah talks, which would initially focus on humanitarian issues, ceasefires and confidence-building measures in order to lay the groundwork for a negotiated solution to the conflict.

Civilian leaders, who have been holding organising meetings in Addis Ababa this week, would not be participating in initial rounds but could be brought in later, as one of the officials said both sides' failure to protect civilians made clear they were no longer fit to rule the country going forward.

The violence has killed at least 7,500 people across the country, according to a conservative estimate from the Armed Conflict Location &amp; Event Data Project.

The war has also decimated already fragile infrastructure, shuttered 80 per cent of the country's hospitals, displaced millions and plunged millions into acute hunger.

<h2>- Newborns risk dying -</h2>

The crisis is taking a particularly harsh toll on Sudan's youngest residents.

The fighting has killed 435 children, according to official casualty numbers, but Elder said the true number of deaths was likely far higher.

UNICEF fears that "many thousands of children...will die in the next few months," he said.

"We fear many thousands died in the last few months. And as long as this crisis continues, many, many thousands of children will continue to die".

"It's hard to quite understand what the world is waiting for," he said.

Among other things, he said the "cruel disregard for civilians and the relentless attacks on health and nutrition services" meant that many thousands of newborns risked dying by the end of the year.

The World Health Organization has verified 56 attacks on health care facilities and personnel since the start of the conflict, resulting in at least 11 deaths and 38 injuries.

Elder pointed out that 333,000 children were due to be born in the country between October and December, at a time when nutrition services had been "devastated".

"Every month, 55,000 children require treatment for the most lethal form of malnutrition and yet in Khartoum less than one in 50 nutrition centres is functional. In West Darfur it's one in 10," he said.

The UN refugee agency said its teams in Sudan's White Nile state had determined that between May 15 and September 14, more than 1,200 children under the age of five had died across nine refugee camps.

Those camps were hosting mainly refugees from South Sudan and Ethiopia, Allen Maina, UNHCR chief of public health told reporters.

Another 3,100 suspected cases of measles were also reported in the same period, as well as more than 500 suspected cases of cholera in other parts of the country, along with outbreaks of dengue and malaria, the agency said.

"The world has the means and the money to prevent every one of these deaths from measles or malnutrition," UNHCR chief Filippo Grandi said in a statement.

"We can prevent more deaths, but need money for the response, access to those in need, and above all, an end to the fighting," he said.

UNICEF also said it sorely lacked funds, noting that it had received just a quarter of the $838 million it had requested to help 10 million children in Sudan.

"Such a funding gap will mean lives lost," Elder said.

The bombing in the south of Sudan's capital came about a week after another air strike, also in southern Khartoum, killed 20 civilians on September 2, according to activists.

The number of victims in Sunday's "Qouro market massacre" had risen to 46 by evening, said the local resistance committee, one of many groups that used to organise pro-democracy protests and now provide assistance during the war.

In its statement, the committee revised an earlier toll of 30 killed. It added there were "dozens wounded" and said casualties continued to pour into the nearby Bashair hospital.

"At about 7:15 am (0515 GMT), military aircraft bombarded the Qouro market area," the committee said.

The hospital had issued an "urgent appeal" for all medical professionals in the area to come and help treat the "increasing number of injured people arriving".

A conservative estimate from the Armed Conflict Location &amp; Event Data Project says nearly 7,500 people have been killed in the war that began on April 15 between army chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and his former deputy, Mohamed Hamdan Daglo, who commands the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

The armed forces control the skies over Khartoum, while RSF fighters continue to dominate the city's streets.

The army has been accused of repeated indiscriminate shelling of the residential areas where the paramilitaries have embedded themselves, including by evicting families and taking over homes.

Positioning themselves in civilian occupied neighbourhoods and buildings is "a potential violation of the Geneva Conventions," the US-supported Sudan Conflict Observatory has said.

It added that the Sudanese Armed Forces "would still be required to ensure that civilian harm is minimised regardless of whether a target has been made a legitimate military target."

On Sunday RSF accused the military of the "air strikes against civilians in the south of Khartoum."

The armed forces denied attacking the market, saying it "directs its strikes against rebel gatherings, crowds and bases as legitimate military targets, and fully adheres to international humanitarian law."

In addition to the capital, fighting has been mainly been concentrated in the western region of Darfur.

Western countries have accused the RSF and allied militias of killings based on ethnicity in Darfur, and the International Criminal Court has opened a new probe into alleged war crimes.

After months of combat, neither side has been able to seize a decisive advantage.

UN data show that around 2.8 million people have fled the Sudanese capital, whose pre-war population was around five million.

Those who cannot or refuse to leave Khartoum remain trapped by air strikes, artillery fire and street battles, forced to ration precious water and electricity.

A total of more than five million people have been forced to flee their homes in Sudan, according to the UN, one million of them across borders.

In the early months of the war, truces brokered by the United States and Saudi Arabia were systematically violated before the two mediators adjourned talks in June.

Recent moves by Burhan, including trips to Egypt, South Sudan and Qatar, signalled a potential return to diplomacy, though both he and Daglo continue to trade hostile statements.

Sudanese human rights organisations have&nbsp;evidence that the Sudanese paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) has&nbsp;put more than 5,000 people in detention and tortured many, Reuters reported. The detained people in the capital were reportedly kept in inhuman conditions.

For the last three months, fighting has raged between Sudan's army and the RSF. The army has air superiority but the RSF fighters are holed up in cities, including the capital Khartoum. Sudan's army has not been able to capitalise on the air superiority it has.

About detainment and torture, RSF said the reports were incorrect, Reuters said. RSF reportedly said that it only had prisoners of war and they were well-treated.

"These organisations are ignoring violations by the army against civilians, including air and artillery strikes, detentions, and arming of civilians," a representative for the force said, as quoted by Reuters.

Among those detained in several locations across Khartoum were combatants, but also 3,500 civilians, including vulnerable women and foreign nationals, said the organisations, who asked to have their names withheld for fear of retribution.

Human rights groups&nbsp;said that they&nbsp;would present to the United Nations documentation of cases of death by torture, as well as "degrading, inhumane conditions of detention devoid of human dignity and the most basic necessities of life."

On Thursday, the UN human rights office said that at least 87 people were buried in a mass grave in the Darfur city of El Geneina. The UN has accused the RSF and the allied militias of the killings, which the paramilitary force denied.

The International Criminal Court said on Thursday that it would investigate killing across the region. There was no immediate comment forthcoming from the RSF.

<h2>Incident in West Darfur</h2>

The UN said on (July 13) that at least 87 people, which includes ethnic Masalits, were buried in a mass grave in Sudan's West Darfur. Citing credible information, the UN hinted that RSF was responsible.

The UN statement said that local people were forced to dispose of the bodies which included those of women and children in an open area which was close to the town of western El-Geneina between June 20-21.

"I condemn in the strongest terms the killing of civilians and hors de combat individuals, and I am further appalled by the callous and disrespectful way the dead, along with their families and communities, were treated," said UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk in the same statement.

The airstrike which hit the Dar es Salaam district of Omdurman&nbsp;early Saturday, is said to be one of the deadliest since the fighting began back in mid-April. This comes after last month an airstrike killed at least 17 people, including five children in the Sudanese capital city of Khartoum.&nbsp;

The RSF has blamed the Sudanese army for the airstrike on Saturday and other strikes on residential areas in Omdurman. The Khartoum state health officials,&nbsp;in a brief statement, said that at least 22 people were killed due to the airstrike while the RSF said the death toll stood at 31. However, the number of those injured was not mentioned by either the RSF or the health ministry.

In a statement, the RSF also said that the strike had “caused significant destruction to homes”. Notably, the paramilitary, reportedly, quickly took over the Sudanese capital city Khartoum and its sister cities Omdurman and Bahri since the fighting broke out on April 15.&nbsp;The army has since launched air and artillery strikes, reported Reuters.&nbsp;

The news agency also reported overnight strikes on Friday which centred on the country’s state broadcasting complex in eastern Omdurman.&nbsp;

The health ministry also posted a video supposedly showing the aftermath of the airstrike which shows dead bodies on the ground with sheets covering them as&nbsp;people try&nbsp;to pull the dead from the rubble, reported the Associated Press.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, a BBC report citing eyewitnesses&nbsp;said that women and children were among the victims.&nbsp;

The RSF was "looting banks and public buildings" in Bara, a town 50 kilometres (30 miles) northeast of El-Obeid, the capital of North Kordofan, a witness told AFP.

"We're being terrorised: they shoot and loot, and the army and police are nowhere to be seen," said another resident, Abdelmohsen Ibrahim.

"Even if the army tries to come from El-Obeid, the RSF are in control of the El-Obeid-Bara road."

El-Obeid, 350 kilometres south of Sudan's capital Khartoum, is a strategic logistical and commercial hub. It has an airport and huge warehouses for the storage of foodstuffs.

Sudan has been rattled due to fighting between the country's military and RSF since April 15. The fight has been centred on the capital Khartoum as well as North Kordofan and the vast western region of Darfur.

Many civilians have accused the RSF of carrying out acts of violence against them, while also charging that the armed forces have done little to protect them.

The army has air superiority. But it has struggled to take the advantage of it against RSF which has established bases in the residential areas.

It has been accused that RSF gunmen have been forcing civilians out of their homes, robbing them, seizing their vehicles and even raping women as they flee to neighbouring countries.

Sudan: Paramilitary RSF accused of terrorising, looting town

Sudan's paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) said it had seized the main base of a heavily armed police unit on Sunday as it sought an edge in its war with the army during heavy fighting in the capital Khartoum.

The RSF in a statement said it had taken full control of the large base belonging to the Central Reserve Police southern Khartoum and posted footage of its fighters celebrating inside the facility, some removing boxes of ammunition from a warehouse.

It later said it had captured 160 pick-up trucks, 75 armoured personnel carriers, and 27 tanks. Reuters was not immediately able to verify the footage or the RSF statements. There was no immediate comment from the army or the police.

Since late Saturday, fighting has surged in the three cities that make up the wider capital - Khartoum, Bahri and Omdurman - as the conflict between the army and the RSF entered its 11th week.

Witnesses also reported a sharp increase in violence in recent days in Nyala, the largest city in the western Darfur region. The UN&nbsp;raised the alarm on Saturday over ethnic targeting and the killing of people from the Masalit community in El Geneina in West Darfur.

Khartoum and El Geneina have been worst affected by the war, although last week tensions and clashes escalated in other parts of Darfur and in Kordofan, in the south.

Fighting has intensified since a series of ceasefire deals agreed at talks led by the United States and Saudi Arabia in Jeddah failed to stick. The talks were adjourned last week.

The Central Reserve Police has been deployed by the army in ground fighting in recent weeks. It had previously been used as a combat force in several regions and to confront protesters demonstrating against a coup in 2021.

It was sanctioned last year by the United States, accused of using excessive force against protesters.

<h2>'Left alone'</h2>

The army, led by Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, has been using air strikes and heavy artillery to try to dislodge the RSF led by Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, known as Hemedti, from neighbourhoods across the capital.

"Since the early morning in north Omdurman we've had air strikes and artillery bombardment and RSF anti-aircraft fire," 47-year-old resident Mohamed al-Samani told Reuters by phone. "Where are the Jeddah talks, why did the world leave us to die alone in Burhan and Hemedti's war?"

In Nyala, a city that grew rapidly as people were displaced during the earlier conflict that spread in Darfur after 2003, witnesses reported a marked deterioration in the security situation over the past few days, with violent clashes in residential neighbourhoods. A human rights monitor said at least 25 civilians had been killed in Nyala since Tuesday.

"Today I left Nyala because of the war. Yesterday there was bombardment in the streets and bullets going into homes," Saleh Haroun, a 38-year-old resident of the city, told Reuters.

There was also fighting between the army and the RSF last week around El Fashir, capital of North Darfur, which the UN&nbsp;says is inaccessible to humanitarian workers.

In El Geneina, which has been almost entirely cut off from communications networks and aid supplies in recent weeks, attacks by Arab militias and the RSF have sent tens of thousands fleeing over the border to Chad.

UN&nbsp;Human Rights spokesperson Ravina Shamdasani on Saturday called for safe passage for people fleeing El Geneina and access for aid workers following reports of summary executions between the city and the border and "persistent hate speech" including calls to kill the Masalit or expel them.

Of those uprooted by the conflict in Sudan, nearly 2 million have been displaced internally and almost 600,000 have fled to neighbouring countries, according to the International Organization for Migration.

Meanwhile, Sudanese officials in Darfur have called for an international investigation amid reports of violence and civilians being killed or shot at as they have tried to escape by foot to Chad since last week.&nbsp;

<h2>Three-day ceasefire in Khartoum</h2>

There has been relative calm in the Sudanese capital as the 72-hour ceasefire United States-Saudi Arabia brokered deal brought some respite to the residents in Khartoum but is set to expire Wednesday morning. However, there has been a reported increase in cases of looting across the city.&nbsp;

A Sudanese army source told AFP, that a huge fire erupted at the intelligence headquarters in Khartoum and alleged that RSF had “bombarded the building and caused the fire”. This claim was later countered after an RSF source told the news agency that “an army drone bombed the building, where RSF fighters had gathered”.&nbsp;

So far, the fighting which first erupted in April has killed more than 2,000 people across Sudan, as per the data from Armed Conflict Location and Event Data Project. Out of which up to 1,100 have been killed in the city of El Geneina alone which is the capital of West Darfur state, according to the US state department.&nbsp;

<h2>Sudanese people try&nbsp;to escape violence in Darfur</h2>

According to UN officials, the violence in Darfur, a region in Sudan with five provinces, has recently taken an ethnic dimension as RSF and Arab militias have reportedly been targeting non-Arab tribes in the region.&nbsp;

Reuters, citing witnesses, reported that assailants have targeted non-Arab residents by their skin colour. Recent reports have also said how the violence in the region’s El Geneina over the past two months has been driven by Arab nomadic tribes and the RSF.&nbsp;

In the past couple of weeks, residents have been fleeing the city en masse to get to the border on foot to neighbouring Chad. Speaking about the violence in El Geneina, Ibrahim, a resident who made it to the Chadian town of Adre, told Reuters how a large number of people tried to seek protection near the army headquarters in El Geneina on June 14 but were blocked.&nbsp;

“All of a sudden, the militias came out and sprayed people with gunfire,” Ibrahim told Reuters from Adre, which is nearly 30 km away from the Sudanese city. He added, “We got surprised by thousands of people running back. People were killed, they were trampled.”&nbsp;

According to AFP, dead bodies were seen across the streets of El Geneina. The international medical relief organisation Doctors Without Borders or MSF, on Monday, said some 15,000 people had fled West Darfur in the past four days.&nbsp;

The organisation also said that many of those arriving from across the border to Chad have reported seeing people shot and killed as they tried to escape El Geneina. At least 150,000 people have fled Darfur into Chad since the beginning of the conflict, as per the UN.

A resident from the Sudanese city told the MSF, “It was a collective decision of the people of El Geneina to leave,” adding that “Most of them fled on foot heading northeast of El Geneina but many of them were killed on this route,” as per Reuters.&nbsp;

<h2>What have the officials said about this violence?</h2>

Mini Arko Minawi, the governor of Darfur, called on the UN Security Council to allow the International Criminal Court to probe “crimes and assassinations” which have taken place in the region in the past two months. Earlier this month, UN envoy to Sudan, Volker Perthes, referred to reports of attacks “allegedly committed by Arab militias and some armed men” in RSF uniform.

Perthes also said that the attacks included targeted killings, rapes and other atrocities which could amount to crimes against humanity. In a video posted on Monday, Minawi said, “What is happening in Darfur now is no less than what had happened in 2003,” referring to the genocidal war that took place in the region.&nbsp;

According to AFP, in an audio recording Tuesday RSF commander, Mohamed Hamdan Daglo, denounced the “tribal conflict” in El Geneina. He also went on to claim that he had ordered his men “not to intervene” and accused the army of “distributing weapons” to civilians.

The fighting that broke out between the Sudanese army led by Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) chief Mohamed Hamdan Daglo has been going on for nearly two months now, and has since killed thousands and displaced millions.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, Egypt has announced a new policy which would require all citizens of neighbouring Sudan to obtain visas before entering their border, said the foreign ministry, on Saturday, citing a crackdown on “illegal activities” including fraud.

<h2>What is happening in Sudan?</h2>

In a series of attempted and failed truces and ceasefires, the one that recently expired offered some respite to the residents in the capital city of Khartoum who were able to leave their houses and stock up on food and other essentials.

Additionally, people in the country have also said that the fighting has intensified in recent weeks including in the densely populated neighbourhood of Haj Youssef in Bahri.&nbsp;Bahri is one of three adjoining cities, along with Khartoum and Omdurman.

Notably, the ceasefire had been announced by the United States and Saudi Arabia mediators who said if they failed to adhere to it, it may break off mediation efforts.&nbsp;

This comes as several ceasefire agreements have been violated and both sides blamed each other for doing so. The mediators said they “share the frustration of the Sudanese people about the uneven implementation of previous ceasefires”.&nbsp;

<h2>Fighting continues after brief respite</h2>

The ceasefire ended at 6:00 am (local time) and as per reports only minutes later, on Sunday, the capital city was rocked with explosions from shelling and clashes. The artillery fire resumed in the north of Omdurman while clashes erupted in southern and central Khartoum, reported Reuters, citing residents.&nbsp;

The one-day lull was “like a dream” that evaporated, said Nasreddin Ahmed, a resident of south Khartoum, as per AFP. Similarly, Musab Saleh, a 38-year-old resident of southern Khartoum, said that the “truce made us relax a bit, but the war and fear are returning today,” reported Reuters.&nbsp;

<h2>Egypt toughens visa restrictions for Sudan</h2>

The Egyptian foreign ministry announced new visa restrictions for Sudanese citizens which has reversed the longstanding exemption for children, women and elderly men. According to the local monitoring group, at least 1,800 people have died due to the fighting, while more than 1.9 million have been displaced.&nbsp;

Thousands of people have fled Sudan and taken refuge in neighbouring countries,&nbsp;including&nbsp; Egypt where more than 200,000 people are reported to have fled since the conflict began. As per the new rules, those Sudanese who had previously been exempted from visas which included women of all ages, children under 16 and anyone over 50.

However, the ministry has stressed that the new requirements were not designed to “prevent or limit” the entry of Sudanese nationals but rather to stop “illegal activities by individuals and groups on the Sudanese side of the border, who forged entry visas” for profit.&nbsp;

It added, “Egypt has welcomed more than 200,000 Sudanese citizens since the start of the crisis…adding to the approximately five million Sudanese citizens who were already present (before the conflict).”&nbsp;

According to the United Nations’ children agency, over 700 people have been killed, out of which 190 were children, while&nbsp;6,000 others were injured.

Furthermore, UN and aid groups have said that despite the truce they continued to struggle to procure bureaucratic approvals and security guarantees to transport aid and staff to Khartoum and other places.&nbsp;

According to a report by the Associated Press, residents have reported sporadic clashes and army aircraft were seen flying over the city on Sunday in parts of Omdurman.

Meanwhile, the detention of Dr. Alaa Eldin Awad Nogoud, a prominent surgeon and pro-democracy activist, in Omdurman, has sparked outrage among medical and rights groups in and outside of Sudan, as per the media report.&nbsp;

A group of armed men stormed Nogoud’s home Sunday and detained him, said Sudan Doctors’ Syndicate, adding that he has been taken to an unknown location. The armed men claimed to be members of the military and the intelligence service, said Forces of Freedom and Change, the pro-democracy coalition.&nbsp;

Sudan's army on Friday (May 26) called for reservists and retired soldiers to enlist again. It is being seen as a move aimed at expanding its numbers as a deadly conflict rages in the country. The move may fuel fighting in spite of a truce. Initially, the army said that all retired soldiers and able men should arm themselves for self-defence. However, it later clarified and called on ex-soldiers to visit nearest military base.

Reuters said that it was not clear from the statement whether the summons was compulsory or voluntary. Sudan has military service but the wording of the statement reportedly appeared to suggest that only former full-time soldiers were included.

The move has come as Saudi Arabia and the US said that both sides in the conflict were complying well with the ceasefire. It was brokered by these two countries which are monitoring the situation. There are reports of sporadic fighting in Sudan's capital Khartoum and in other parts of the country.

"Although there was observed use of military aircraft and isolated gunfire in Khartoum, the situation improved from May 24 when the ceasefire monitoring mechanism detected significant breaches of the agreement," a Saudi-US statement said.

Saudi and US representatives "cautioned the parties against further violations and implored them to improve respect for the ceasefire on May 25, which they did," it added.

Civilians who have stayed in Khartoum since the fighting broke out have suffered as basic services like electricty, water, heath and communications have been disrupted.

Many homes, particularly in well-off areas, have been looted, along with food stores, flour mills and other essential facilities.

"It's all part of the chaos of this war," said Taysir Abdelrahim, who found out from abroad her home was looted. "Even if we were in Sudan there's nothing you can do about it."

<h2>RSF denies looting</h2>

The RSF have denied allegations of looting and instead have blamed it on people who it says has stolen its uniforms. RSF fighters are largely bunkered down in Khartoum neighbourhoods. While the Sudan army is manily relying on air power.&nbsp;

This comes amid fears that the fighting could break the fragile United States-Saudi Arabia brokered weeklong ceasefire deal. Meanwhile, the International Organization for Migration (IMO) said that more than a million people have been displaced within the country since the fighting began over a month ago.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, the observers from the two countries noted that the “fighting in Khartoum appeared to be less intense”.&nbsp;

The agreement came after the warring Sudanese army and paramilitary faction Rapid Support Forces (RSF) had previously violated multiple ceasefire agreements. Washington and Riyadh addressing the reports said there is some indication that “both sides violated the agreement” but stressed that the efforts to deliver “lifesaving assistance” to the people of Sudan are underway.&nbsp;

According to recent data from Armed Conflict Location and Event Data Project (ACLED), more than 1,800 people have lost their lives since the fighting began on April 15. The conflict has also worsened the country’s humanitarian crisis as over a million people have been forced to flee their homes.&nbsp;

The IMO, on Wednesday, said 319,000 people have sought refuge in neighbouring countries out of which, over 132,000 refugees arrived in Egypt; 80,000 in Chad; and 69,000 in South Sudan. “In spite of successive ceasefires, civilians continue to be exposed to serious risk of death and injury,” said UN Human Rights chief Volker Turk.&nbsp;

He also called the situation in Sudan “heartbreaking,” at a press briefing in Geneva and went on to address the two warring generals directly and said, “General (Abdel Fattah) al-Burhan, General (Mohamed Hamdan) Dagalo, you must issue clear instructions, in no uncertain terms to all those under your command, that there is zero tolerance for sexual violence...civilians must be spared and you must stop this senseless violence now.”&nbsp;

Turk also said that his office has found at least 25 cases of sexual violence so far but believes that the real number is much higher.&nbsp;

<h2>Fighting continues with some respite</h2>

Columns of black smoke could be seen rising into the air in areas west of central Khartoum, while witnesses told Reuters, on Wednesday that there was shelling near an army camp in the southern part of the capital city.&nbsp;

In Omdurman, witnesses said that an army fighter plane had been shot down, the footage of which appeared on social media but could not independently be verified. Additionally, gunfire was heard in the Jabra neighbourhood of southern Khartoum.&nbsp;

Ali Mohammed, a resident of the Sudanese capital city, as per AFP&nbsp;said that the water supply had not been restored as of Wednesday “but at least I was able to go out and buy water for my family”.&nbsp;

Another resident, 55-year-old, Mohammed Taher, said he was finally able to go to the city’s central market “five kilometres away to buy food and return without incident”.&nbsp;

This comes nearly a week after US-Saudi Arabia brokered talks between the Sudanese Army and the paramilitary faction Rapid Support Forces (RSF) began in Jeddah.&nbsp;

What have the two sides agreed to do?

A report by the news agency AFP, citing a US official involved in what has been dubbed as “pre-negotiation talks”, said that the two sides have signed the agreement on a “declaration of commitment to protect the civilians of Sudan”.&nbsp;

“We affirm our commitment to ensuring the protection of civilians at all times, including by allowing safe passage for civilians to leave areas of active hostilities on a voluntary basis in the direction of their choice,” the declaration stated. The two sides also signed a declaration that they would work towards a short-term ceasefire in further talks, reported Reuters.&nbsp;

The agreement in question largely implies that both sides will let in humanitarian assistance, to allow the restoration of electricity, water and other basic services. Furthermore, the two sides will also withdraw security forces from hospitals and arrange for “respectful burial” of the dead.&nbsp;

“The two sides are quite far apart,” a US State Department official, speaking on condition of anonymity, told Reuters. The official also said that the negotiators are working with Saudi and US mediators and set a goal of reaching a ceasefire deal in up to 10 days.&nbsp;

“This is not a ceasefire. This is an affirmation of their obligations under international humanitarian law, particularly with regard to the treatment of civilians and the need to create space for humanitarians to operate,” the US official told AFP.&nbsp;

She added, “We are hopeful, cautiously, that their willingness to sign this document will create some momentum that will force them to create the space,” to bring in relief supplies. Hundreds of people have been killed due to the conflict which suddenly began on April 15 and has triggered a humanitarian crisis.

According to the World Health Organization, over 600 people have been killed and more than 5,000 injured in the fighting. The country’s Health Ministry said at least 450 people were killed in the western Darfur region alone. This comes as many UN agencies and NGOs announced temporary suspensions of their work in Khartoum and Darfur due to the intense fighting.&nbsp;

There has been no official word on the talks that began on Saturday between the Sudanese army and the rival paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF). This comes as both sides have broken several ceasefires since the conflict began last month.&nbsp;

What is happening in Jeddah?

Army chief Abdel-Fattah al-Burhan, on Monday, said that the army is looking for a peaceful solution but that there could be discussions about a lasting settlement. However, it is only possible “after we reach a permanent ceasefire in Khartoum.”&nbsp;

He added, “We believe the peaceful solution is the ideal route to handle this crisis,” as quoted by Reuters. This comes as the two sides are holding discussions in Jeddah over a ceasefire and humanitarian issues like safe passage. The US-Saudi Arabia brokered talks have also been dubbed as the “pre-negotiation talks” by the two countries.&nbsp;

A Saudi diplomat source, speaking on condition of anonymity, told AFP that both sides consider themselves “capable of winning the battle”. As of Monday, the source also told the news agency that the discussions had yielded “no major progress,” adding that a “permanent ceasefire isn’t on the table”.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia’s foreign ministry said that they are pushing to expand negotiations and reach a “permanent cessation of hostilities”. The talks in Jeddah, which are “set to continue&nbsp; 
“in the following days”, aim to reach “an effective short-term halt” to the hostilities while also facilitating aid delivery and restoring basic services.&nbsp;

Air strikes continue across Khartoum&nbsp;

Media reports, on Monday, indicate that sound of air strikes and clashes echoed anew across the capital city. A southern Khartoum resident told AFP that their family could hear “the sound of airstrikes which appeared to come from near a market in central Khartoum”.&nbsp;

According to the Armed Conflict Location and Event Data Project, so far, over 750 people have been killed while more than 5,000 have been injured, across Sudan amid the ongoing fighting. Meanwhile, the United Nations said, almost 200 people have been killed in West Darfur state over the past two weeks. This comes as both sides have broken several ceasefires since the conflict began last month. What is happening in Jeddah? Army chief Abdel-Fattah al-Burhan, on Monday, said that the army is looking for a peaceful solution but that there could be discussions about a lasting settlement. However, it is only possible “after we reach a permanent ceasefire in Khartoum.” He added, “We believe the peaceful solution is the ideal route to handle this crisis,” as quoted by Reuters. This comes as the two sides are holding discussions in Jeddah over a ceasefire and humanitarian issues like safe passage. The US-Saudi Arabia brokered talks have also been dubbed as the “pre-negotiation talks” by the two countries. A Saudi diplomat source, speaking on condition of anonymity, told AFP that both sides consider themselves “capable of winning the battle”. As of Monday, the source also told the news agency that the discussions had yielded “no major progress,” adding that a “permanent ceasefire isn’t on the table”. Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia’s foreign ministry said that they are pushing to expand negotiations and reach a “permanent cessation of hostilities”. The talks in Jeddah, which are “set to continue “in the following days”, aim to reach “an effective short-term halt” to the hostilities while also facilitating aid delivery and restoring basic services. Air strikes continue in Sudan with ‘no major progress’ in truce talks

The United Nations said on Tuesday (May 9) that heavy fighting in Sudan has displaced more than 700,000 people in the country since mid-April, adding the figure doubled in a week. Addressing a press conference in Geneva, Paul Dillon, a spokesperson for the UN's International Organization for Migration (IOM) said, "There are now more than 700,000 internally displaced by the fighting which began on April 15. Last Tuesday, the figure stood at 340,000."

Dillon pointed out that even before the conflict started on April 15, 3.7 million people were registered as internally displaced in Sudan. He said that many internally displaced persons (IDPs) are sheltering with relatives, while others are gathering in schools, mosques and public buildings.

The IOM spokesperson further said that the agency was conscious of the enormous pressures placed on host communities already suffering from the effects of over three weeks of fighting.&nbsp;

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHRC) said that another 150,000 people fled Sudan since the fighting started between the army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).&nbsp;

The UN has estimated that five million additional people would need emergency assistance inside Sudan, while 860,000 people are expected to flee to neighbouring states.

During Tuesday's briefing, the World Health Organization (WHO) said that 604 people have been killed and over 5,000 injured so far.&nbsp;

The conflict in the North African country rages on as&nbsp;negotiations between the warring factions have yielded no major progress. Despite several ceasefires, tensions and deadly fighting persist in Khartoum and other areas.

Last Saturday (May 6), both factions sent their envoys to Jeddah, Saudi Arabia for peace talks. But there has been no word on the progress of these talks.&nbsp;

On Monday, Sudanese Special Envoy Dafallah al-Haj met South Sudan President Salva Kiir. The talks with President Kiir were aimed at fostering a lasting ceasefire and granting safe passage to humanitarian support as well as providing&nbsp;an escape corridor for fleeing civilians.

Following the meeting, Dafallah al-Haj told reporters that Sudan's army was in full control. "The elements of the Rapid Deployment Force, the rebellion, have infiltrated inside the civilian quarters and they are now taking, considering, or actually occupying hospitals. That is why the army does not want to go aggressively because of the safety of the civilians," he said.&nbsp;

Sudan conflict: More than 700,000 displaced since mid-April, says UN

Nearly a fortnight after launching ‘Operation Kaveri’ to bring back stranded citizens from the conflict-ridden country of Sudan, the Indian government on Friday wrapped up the evacuation programme.

The Indian Air Force C130 flight brought the final batch of 47 passengers home which culminated the&nbsp;highly laborious and dangerous operation. In total, 3,862 people were moved out of Sudan, informed&nbsp;External Affairs Minister (EAM) S Jaishankar on Twitter.&nbsp;

"An Indian Air Force C130 J flight carrying 47 passengers has landed in India. With this arrival, 3862 persons have been moved out of Sudan through #OperationKaveri," said Jaishankar.&nbsp;

The EAM also appreciated the countries that helped New Delhi evacuate its citizens safely.&nbsp;

"From Jeddah, airforce and commercial flights have brought people home. We are grateful to Saudi Arabia for hosting them and facilitating this process. Also appreciate the support of Chad, Egypt, France, South Sudan, UAE, UK, USA and UN," he added.&nbsp;

The Indian Air Force chauffeured 17 flights from Sudan while five Indian Navy ships were also involved in the evacuation process.&nbsp;

Jaishankar&nbsp;lauded Union Minister of State for External Affairs V. Muraleedharan, who was present in Saudi Arabia to oversee the rescue efforts. Muraleedharan's presence on the ground was a source of strength and reassurance, he said.
