NASA’s Innovative Advance Concepts program awarded a $600,000 grant to a robotics mechanical engineer at the US agency’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in order to design the robots. Ethan Schaler has been given a time frame of two years to come up with the final products for NASA. &nbsp;

“With a swarm of small swimming robots, we are able to explore a much larger volume of ocean water and improve our measurements by having multiple robots collecting data in the same area,” Schaler said about the project according to a NASA release.

The Imperial College London team has developed a new physical examination approach that could reduce doctors' errors and bias.

Research published in the journal Scientific Reports suggests that this could also teach trainee doctors how to use clues hidden in patients' facial expressions to minimise the force used in physical exams, while also detecting and correcting early signs of bias in medical students by exposing them to a wide variety of patient identities.

"Improving the accuracy of facial expressions of pain on these robots is a key step in improving the quality of physical examination training for medical students," said Sibylle Rerolle, from Imperial's Dyson School of Design Engineering.

Undergraduate students participated in the study by performing a physical exam on a robotic patient's abdomen. In order to recreate pain-related facial expressions, data about forces applied to the abdomen were used to trigger changes in six different regions of the MorphFace robot face.

The method revealed the order in which different parts of a robotic face, known as facial activation units (AUs), must fire to accurately express pain. Additionally, the study determined the optimum speed and magnitude of AU activation.

Researchers discovered that the most realistic facial expressions were created by activating the upper face AUs (around the eyes) before activating the lower face AUs (around the mouth). The most natural results were obtained by allowing the Jaw Drop AU to take longer to activate.

It is crucial for doctors to consider patient facial expressions when performing physical examinations of painful areas.&nbsp;

Most medical training simulators, however, cannot show real-time facial expressions related to pain and only include a limited number of patient identities according to ethnicity and gender.

Based on studies demonstrating racial bias in the ability to recognize facial expressions of pain, the researchers state that these limitations may lead to biased practices on the part of medical students.

The US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) this week undertook trials of the 45kg (100-pound), canine machine prototypes in Virginia and Texas borders to test in a variety of surveillance-focused roles.

According to their press release, the DHS said the trials were “successful” and that the work with the machines will continue. However, they didn’t share any timeframe of their deployment.

They said that the Automated Ground Surveillance Vehicles, or the robot dogs, were specifically engineered by the research and development arm of the DHS, the Science and Technology Directorate (S&amp;T), in cooperation with advanced robotics firm Ghost Robotics for the US Customs and Border Protection&nbsp;(CBP).

“The southern border can be an inhospitable place for man and beast, and that is exactly why a machine may excel there,” S&amp;T program manager, Brenda Long said in the release.

The A3 data primarily reflects orders for traditional industrial robots - large systems typically replacing entire assembly lines with moving arms. But a growing number of robots are now cobots, which are designed to work alongside humans on assembly lines.

"The number one driver for automation is the labor shortage in manufacturing," said Joe Campbell, a senior manager for applications development at Universal Robots, a unit of Massachusetts-based Teradyne Inc, which specializes in cobots.&nbsp;

The pandemic is not the only factor driving the change. It is estimated that 2,000 Baby Boomers are retiring from manufacturing every day, which depletes the expertise of factory floors.

Campbell said cobots are gaining traction in many industries that have long been resistant to automation. For example, the company sold robot arms to a company that uses them to install drywall in large building projects: a notoriously labour-intensive process.

China seems to have taken a massive leap in robotics as a group of scientists claimed to have built a robot that can read people's minds with 96 per cent accuracy.

The developers at China Three Gorges University’s Intelligent Manufacturing Innovation Technology Centre tested the robot at an assembly factory, reports&nbsp;Hong Kong-based newspaper South China Morning Post.

The industrial robot not only monitored the worker’s brain waves, but also collected electric signals from muscles, as it worked seamlessly together to assemble a complex product, the developers said.

The robot was able to instantly read the co-worker’s brain waves without the latter saying anything and was able to pick up a tool and put it on the workstation, according to the developers.

“In modern industrial manufacturing, assembly work accounts for 45 per cent of the total workload, and 20-30 per cent of the total production cost,” project lead scientist Dong Yuanfa and his co-researchers said in a paper published in domestic peer-reviewed journal China Mechanical Engineering.

Collaborative robots, or “cobots”, could accelerate the pace of an assembly line, but their application remained limited because “their ability to recognise human intention is often inaccurate and unstable”, the paper said.

Dong said his robot was put through “hundreds of hours of training” by volunteers, which included assembly line workers carefully putting together a product.

The robot reportedly followed commands of the workers 70 per cent of the time but did need volunteers to “concentrate very hard” for the brain message to be read.

Many of them grew too distracted due to the repetitive nature of their thoughts.

The paper noted that further tests would be needed to establish whether the technology could be used in an actual factory, as all tests so far had been conducted in a lab.
