<p>“This new robot provides a one-stop alternative because it does test independently,” BioTeke engineer surnamed Meng told South China Morning Post in an interview on Monday.</p>

<p>“Researchers built models of human mouths and developed an image recognition algorithm for a high-accuracy mechanical arm. The arm is able to move autonomously and gently collect oral swab samples from a user’s throat,” he added while explaining the workings of the robot.</p>

New COVID-19 testing robot can produce results in just 45 minutes

<p>Scientists at Stanford University in California have created a robot that can dive down in deep ocean to locate shipwrecks and sunken planes which is impossible for humans to do. The humanoid, OceanOneK, is controlled remotely, and gives feedback to the user, who is dubbed as “virtual diver”, allowing the operator to feel like they're underwater explorers.</p>

<p>The machine has anthropomorphic hands, sensors and limbs, and is perfect for exploring the deep-sea with unprecedented versatility.</p>

<p>The robot has two eyes for stereoscopic vision, and with its nimble arms and hands, it can manoeuvre through difficult marine environments while providing realistic feedback to the operator. It is fitted with computers and eight multi-directional thrusters that allow&nbsp;it to carefully navigate through the sites of fragile sunken ships.</p>

<p>As it has force sensors in each wrist, the pilots can get a feel of the weight of any object whenever OceanOne is holding one. This feature is called haptic feedback.</p>

<p>The robot’s intelligence is furnished by the merbot's “brain”,&nbsp;which has tactile pressure sensors that can prevent it from crushing anything in its grasp.</p>

<p>The merbot's&nbsp;batteries are contained in its tail, along with computers and a set of underwater thrusters. Pairing that with its navigation system, it can keep itself steady even in turbulent waters.</p>

<p>A chess-playing robot broke a seven-year-old boy’s finger&nbsp;during a tournament in Moscow, Russia, after the kid went for a swift move without waiting for the necessary time for the machine to complete its action.</p>

<p>The incident took place on July 19 at the Moscow Chess Open tournament. The vice president of the Chess Federation of Russia, Sergey Smagin, told state-owned news agency RIA Novosti that the boy is fine and that his fingers have been fractured, reports Newsweek.</p>

<p>"The boy is all right. They put a plaster cast on the finger to heal faster. Yes, there are certain safety rules and the child, apparently, violated them and, when he made a move, did not notice that he had to wait. This is an extremely rare case, the first I can recall," he was quoted as saying.</p>

<p>A video has since gone viral, showing that the kid had his fingers trapped by the robot for a few seconds before a woman rushes to help him. Three men then intervene and manage to free the boy's finger from the robot's hold.</p>

<p>“This industry is suffering from staff shortages which means we would actually very much like to employ more staff if we could find more people willing to work in hospitality,” said Heidt in the video which showed off the various features of the robot. “We will keep the same amount of bar staff we had before, so we are not planning to replace anybody with the robot, rather it aims to be a help.”</p>

<p>The staff working in the bar have accepted the robot as their own. The introduction of the robots has made life easier for them and they were also impressed with how effective the robot has been.</p>

It may sound like the plot of a science fiction novel, but it is now a reality thanks to a team of researchers led by Ravinder Dahiya in the University of Glasgow's James Watt School of Engineering. The skin can be a huge step towards creating superior prosthetics and according to the researchers, this can also lead to “large-scale neuromorphic printed e-skin capable of responding appropriately to stimuli”.</p>

<p>"We all learn early on in our lives to respond appropriately to unexpected stimuli like pain in order to prevent us from hurting ourselves again. Of course, the development of this new form of electronic skin didn't really involve inflicting pain as we know it - it's simply a shorthand way to explain the process of learning from external stimulus," professor&nbsp;Dahiya said according to PTI.</p>

<p>"What we've been able to create through this process is an electronic skin capable of distributed learning at the hardware level, which doesn't need to send messages back and forth to a central processor before taking action. Instead, it greatly accelerates the process of responding to touch by cutting down the amount of computation required," he added.</p>

<p>In the paper titled 'Printed Synaptic Transistors based Electronic Skin for Robots to Feel and Learn', the researchers explained that the e-skin uses a grid of 168 synaptic transistors made from zinc-oxide nanowires present on its surface to send a signal to the synaptic transistor.</p>

<p>Not every job can be done by a robot, some require emotion, may be even a personal touch, however, in Japan even such jobs are being delegated to robots.</p>

<p>Many nursing centres in Tokyo use robots. At first, it looks like a novel idea and proof of Japan's technological prowess. However, after WION visited&nbsp;a nursing home, it looked heartbreaking since not every question has an automated answer especially when real human lives are at stake.</p>
