Over the last 24 months, Tsubame Industries has been working on a four-wheeled, 4.5-meter (14.8-foot) tall robot that bears a little similarity to "Mobile Suit Gundam" from the immensely popular Japanese animation series. The robot is scheduled to make its debut at the Japan Mobility Show in late October. Afterwards, Tsubame Industries intends to sell the robot in five units for a total of 400 million yen ($2.7 million) apiece. The robot, named ARCHAX after the bird-like dinosaur Archaeopteryx, is equipped with cockpit monitors that project pictures from external cameras. This allows the pilot to control the robot's hands and arms using joysticks from inside its body.

AI-powered robot to provide step-by-step ritual guidance in Mecca's Grand Mosque

On the show, we keep bringing you updates from the world of robotics. Watch this story to see how robots are becoming smarter and more sophisticated in 2023.

Can humans and robots co-exist?

In a first, South Korea's national orchestra was conducted by an android robot that stunned the sold-out crowd in Seoul on June 30. The audience was awestruck after the flawless performance by the robot in place of a human maestro.

The South Korea-made robot called EveR 6 was designed by the Korea Institute of Industrial Technology. It has a humanoid face and was programmed to replicate the movements of a human conductor.

Before starting the performance in front of nearly 1,000 people, it bowed to the audience. The orchestra was playing traditional Korean instruments. To make it more like humans, the robot even started waving its arms to control the tempo when it was performing.

Three of the five pieces played by the orchestra were guided by EveR 6, one of which was jointly led by a human conductor, named Choi Soo-yeoul.

Artificial Intelligence is already threatening thousands of jobs across the world. Now, a Chinese metaverse corporation has named a robot as its CEO, a move that has people excited, while also creating a little fear. Ms Tang Yu is a virtual humanoid robot powered by Artificial Intelligence and has been appointed the Rotating CEO of Fujian NetDragon Websoft.

The company, that makes applications for mobile phones and also operates multiplayer online games, aims to “leapfrog operational efficiency to a new level” with the move.

“We believe AI is the future of corporate management, and our appointment of Ms. Tang Yu represents our commitment to truly embrace the use of AI to transform the way we operate our business, and ultimately drive our future strategic growth,” NetDragon chairman Dr Dejian Liu said on the appointment.

Tang Yu will oversee operations at the company valued at nearly $10 billion. A press release said, "Tang Yu will streamline process flow, enhance quality of work tasks, and improve speed of execution. Tang Yu will also serve as a real-time data hub and analytical tool to support rational decision-making in daily operations, as well as to enable a more effective risk management system."

The company said that the robot will also perform tasks that are subjective in nature and need human touch. It will help the company make rational decisions and help with an effective risk management system.

80 users in 45 minutes – A Chinese company announced on Monday that they have developed a robot which can complete Covid tests at an unbelievable speed. The Chinese company BioTeke claimed that the robot is capable of operating faster than conventional methods and according to a report on South China Morning Post, the robot can study 320 samples at the same time.

The robot was unveiled at the World Robot Conference 2022 in Beijing and although it looks like a vending machine, the robot impressed a number of people with its effectiveness. Till now, there were some robots which could collect samples, but this new innovation takes it one step forward.

The new robot can collect oral swab samples and also complete the testing by themselves.

“This new robot provides a one-stop alternative because it does test independently,” BioTeke engineer surnamed Meng told South China Morning Post in an interview on Monday.

“Researchers built models of human mouths and developed an image recognition algorithm for a high-accuracy mechanical arm. The arm is able to move autonomously and gently collect oral swab samples from a user’s throat,” he added while explaining the workings of the robot.

The company has approached the Chinese authorities for using the robots in public areas and it can be a significant step in conducting tests at record speeds. The robot is currently being reviewed by National Medical Products Administration for widespread usage in places like airports.

“At this stage, epidemic prevention work mainly focuses on the mass screening of the population. The robot can serve as an affordable rapid screening method. We can recognise positive carriers before they start spreading the virus in the city to effectively avoid the spread of the epidemic.”

New COVID-19 testing robot can produce results in just 45 minutes

Scientists at Stanford University in California have created a robot that can dive down in deep ocean to locate shipwrecks and sunken planes which is impossible for humans to do. The humanoid, OceanOneK, is controlled remotely, and gives feedback to the user, who is dubbed as “virtual diver”, allowing the operator to feel like they're underwater explorers.

The machine has anthropomorphic hands, sensors and limbs, and is perfect for exploring the deep-sea with unprecedented versatility.

The robot has two eyes for stereoscopic vision, and with its nimble arms and hands, it can manoeuvre through difficult marine environments while providing realistic feedback to the operator. It is fitted with computers and eight multi-directional thrusters that allow it to carefully navigate through the sites of fragile sunken ships.

As it has force sensors in each wrist, the pilots can get a feel of the weight of any object whenever OceanOne is holding one. This feature is called haptic feedback.

The robot’s intelligence is furnished by the merbot's “brain”, which has tactile pressure sensors that can prevent it from crushing anything in its grasp.

The merbot's batteries are contained in its tail, along with computers and a set of underwater thrusters. Pairing that with its navigation system, it can keep itself steady even in turbulent waters.
