<p>One of the people who was arrested on suspicion of spying for China was a researcher in the British parliament, reported UK newspaper, The Sunday Times.</p>

<p>"With regard to my meeting with Premier Li (Chinese Premier Li Qiang), what I said very specifically is that I raised a range of different concerns that we have in areas of disagreement. In particular my very strong concerns about any interference in our parliamentary democracy, which is clearly unacceptable," he stated while speaking to the media.</p>

<p>London's Metropolitan Police released a statement saying that two men were arrested in the month of March under the Official Secrets Act and had been released on bail until early October.</p>

<p>“The investigation is being carried out by officers from the Met’s Counter Terrorism Command, which has responsibility for investigations relating to allegations of Official Secrets Act and espionage-related offences,” the statement said.</p>

This is just part of our strategy to protect ourselves, protect our values and our interests, to align our approach to China with that of our allies, like that of America, Australia, Canada, Japan and others. But also to engage where it makes sense. And actually, I think the right thing to do is take the opportunity to engage, to raise concerns specifically, rather than just shouting from the sidelines," he said.</p>

<p>As per news agency Reuters, a Chinese readout from the meeting welcomed Britain's extended pragmatic cooperation with China, adding Li had said that "the two sides should properly handle their differences". However, it did not mention anything about the spying accusation.</p>

<p>India and the United Kingdom are negotiating a Free Trade Agreement, talks for which had begun in the year 2022. The 12th round of negotiations for the UK-India Free Trade Agreement (FTA) took place from August 8 to 31 this year.</p>

<p>Expressing pride for his ‘Hindu’ roots, Rishi Sunak had on Friday expressed his hope that he will find time to visit a temple, here in India, during his stay for the G20 Summit.</p>

<p>Sunak said that he has “enormous respect” for PM Modi and said that he is keen to support him in making G20 an enormous success.</p>

<p>Speaking exclusively to ANI, Rishi Sunak said, “I am a proud Hindu. That’s how I was raised, that’s how I am. Hopefully, I can visit the Mandir while I am here for the next couple of days. We just had Rakshabandhan, so from my sister and my cousin, I have all my Rakhis.”</p>

<p>“I didn’t have time to celebrate Janmashtami. But hopefully, as I said I can make up for that if we visit a Mandir this time,” he added.</p>

<p>He further said that faith is something very important as it gives strength and resilience during stress.</p>

<p>He was accorded a warm welcome at the airport by Union Minister Ashwini Choubey, British High Commissioner to India Alex Ellis and senior diplomats.</p>

<p>Shortly after landing in the national capital, the UK PM made some important remarks on various subjects one being the concerns around pro-Khalistan extremism.</p>

<p>This is Sunak's very first visit to India after he assumed office in October last year.</p>

<h2><strong>‘No form of extremism acceptable,’ says Sunak</strong></h2>

<p>Sunak asserted that no form of extremism or violence is acceptable in the United Kingdom and the government in his country is working closely with India to tackle Khalistani extremism.</p>

<p>"No form of extremism or violence like that is acceptable in the UK. And that's why we are working very closely with the Indian government to particularly tackle 'PKE' Pro-Khalistan Extremism,” he said in a conversation with news agency ANI.</p>

<p>"Our security Minister recently was just in India talking to his counterparts. We have working groups together to share intelligence and information so that we can root out this kind of violent extremism. It's not right and I won't tolerate it in the UK," he added.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>‘I am a proud Hindu’</strong></h2>

<p>The British Prime Minister, while expressing his pride for his Hindu roots, said that he hopes he finds the time to visit a temple during his stay in India.</p>

<p>“I didn't have time to celebrate Janmashtami. But hopefully, as I said I can make up for that if we visit a Mandir this time,” he added.</p>

<p>“It is something that is important to me. I think faith is something that helps everybody who has faith in their lives, particularly when you have these stressful jobs like I do. Having faith gives you resilience, gives you strength that is important and it provides an outlook on life which I find particularly valuable,” Sunak further added.&nbsp;</p>

<p>He also called his visit to India 'fantastic' and said that he has enjoyed his first few hours here.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“It is fantastic for me to be back in India. Obviously, it's personally very special for me to be here, particularly with Akshata, and we thoroughly enjoyed the first few hours of our trip so far,” he said.</p>

<p>“Well you know obviously you know my wife is from Bangalore, we got married in Bangalore. We used to spend lots of time together before we had children in Delhi and were trying to figure out if we can go to one of our old favourite restaurants this evening,” Sunak said.</p>

<h2><strong>‘Will make sure G20 under India's presidency achieves success’</strong></h2>

<p>Sunak said that the G20 has been a huge success for India and it is the "right country at the right time to be hosting this”.</p>

<p>"I'm very keen to support Prime Minister Modi and making sure that this G20 is an enormous success for India which I know it will be and this has been a great year for India more generally," he said.</p>

<p>“G20 has been a huge success for India. India is the right country at the right time to be hosting this. I feel we are going to have a very good couple of days of deliberations and decisions made,” the British Prime Minister added while highlighting that the coming two days will witness hectic deliberations. &nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>‘FTA made enormous progress, still hard work to go’</strong></h2>

<p>While talking about the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) under discussion between India and the United Kingdom, the UK PM said that the agreement has made “enormous progress” but there is "still hard work to go.”</p>

<p>"Both Modi ji and I are keen to see a comprehensive and ambitious trade deal concluded between our two countries. Both of us think there is a good deal to be done. But trade deals always take time, they need to work for both countries. Although we have made enormous progress there is still hard work to go," he said.</p>

<p>Local reports have mentioned that Lewis sent racist messages aimed at black people, Romanians, the Chinese, and Muslims. He apparently used a photo of Sunak, Priti Patel and Sajid Javid under the street sign "Browning Street".&nbsp;</p>

<p>He pleaded guilty to eight counts of sending racist messages. Reports have said that he used to work at the Home Office after he retired from the Met in 2015.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Booth, who retired in April 2001, reportedly pleaded guilty to four counts of sending by public communication offensive racist messages. Reports citing the government department said that he sent a picture of the late Queen and Philip with a golliwog doll, he also joked about Pakistani flood victims.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Meanwhile, Elsom pleaded guilty to three counts. He reportedly sent by public communication grossly offensive racist messages. He retired from the Met in May 2012.&nbsp;</p>

<p>According to the Scotland Yard, all the officers had once been part of the Diplomatic Protection Group, which guards high-profile individuals. All the officers left the force between 2001 and 2015.&nbsp;</p>

<p>As quoted by media outlets, Commander James Harman said: "As soon as we were made aware of these allegations we acted to launch an investigation. I am pleased that following the determined work of officers we have been able to secure these charges."&nbsp;</p>

<p>"We are working relentlessly to rebuild the trust of the public which has understandably been dented by a number of high-profile incidents and investigations in recent years which have involved officers or former officers," said Harman, who leads the Met's Anti-Corruption and Abuse Command.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"The honest majority of Met officers are fully behind this work. They are tired of being let down by a minority in policing and they are aware of the damage poor behaviour can do to our relationship with the communities we serve," he further added.&nbsp;</p>

Ex-Met officers plead guilty over racism aimed at Rishi Sunak, late Queen, and more

<p>Allaying India's concerns over activities of pro-Khalistani elements in the UK, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak asserted on Wednesday that no form of extremism is acceptable, adding that the right to hold lawful protest does not extend to violent or threatening behaviour.</p>

<p>In an exclusive interview with news agency PTI, Sunak said he takes the duty of the government to disrupt and counter violent, divisive ideologies, whatever they may be, very seriously.&nbsp;</p>

<p>He said that the UK is working closely with its partners in the Indian government to tackle the threat posed by pro-Khalistan extremism.</p>

<p>There have been increasing concerns in India about the activities of pro-Khalistani elements in the UK, especially after an attack on the Indian High Commission in London in March.</p>

<p>Sunak's comments come days before he visits India to attend the G20 summit.</p>

<p>"No form of extremism is acceptable in the UK, and I take the duty of the government to disrupt and counter violent, divisive ideologies, whatever they may be, very seriously," he said.</p>

<p>"We are working closely with our partners in the Indian government to tackle the threat from pro-Khalistan extremism and the British police are fully empowered to deal with violent acts," he said, replying to a question on the issue.</p>

<p>There is a view in Delhi that the Khalistani issue is a stumbling block in deeper India-UK ties.</p>

<p>Sunak also referred to a meeting between External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and UK's Security Minister Tom Tugendhat last month that was focused on addressing the threat of extremism and corruption.</p>

<p>"In August, the UK's Security Minister met Minister Jaishankar in New Delhi to develop our shared work addressing the threat of extremism and corruption," Sunak said.</p>

<p>"During that visit, he announced new funding to enhance the UK’s capability to tackle pro-Khalistan extremism. The Rs 1 crore investment will strengthen our understanding of the threat posed by pro-Khalistan extremism and complement the joint work already underway between the UK and India," he said.</p>

<p>"UK citizens enjoy the right to gather lawfully and demonstrate a point of view, but rights to lawful protest do not extend to violent or threatening behaviour," the British prime minister said.</p>

<p>In March, India reacted angrily after pro-Khalistan elements attacked the Indian High Commission in London and pulled down the national flag from a pole at the front of the building.</p>

<p>The India-UK relationship was elevated to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership during the India-UK virtual summit held between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his then-British counterpart Boris Johnson in May 2021.</p>

<p>At the summit, the two sides adopted a 10-year roadmap to expand ties in the key areas of trade and economy, defence and security, climate change, and people-to-people connections, among others.</p>

Sunak says working closely with India to tackle threat from pro-Khalistan extremism

<p>Britain is to rejoin the Horizon Europe science research programme under a new bespoke deal, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak's office and the EU said on Thursday (September 7).</p>

<p>Horizon is a European Union scheme that funds research projects which the UK says it has been excluded from for the past three years, following Brexit.</p>

<p>"As part of the new deal negotiated over the last six months, the prime minister has secured improved financial terms of association to Horizon Europe that are right for the UK," a statement said.</p>

<p>The deal follows a call between Sunak and EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen on Wednesday.</p>

<p>"The EU and UK are key strategic partners and allies, and today's agreement proves that point. We will continue to be at the forefront of global science and research,” von der Leyen said in a statement.</p>

<p>The deal means that UK researchers can apply immediately for grants and bid to take part in projects under the Horizon programme, the UK government statement said.</p>

<p>"Horizon will give UK companies and research institutions unrivalled opportunities to lead global work to develop new technologies and research projects, in areas from health to AI," it added.</p>

<p>Under the new accord, however, the UK will not be involved with the Euratom nuclear regulator, but instead "take forward its own fusion energy strategy", Downing Street added.</p>

<p>The UK scientific community welcomed the announcement.</p>

<p>"This is a great day for researchers in the UK and across Europe," said a joint statement by the Academy of Medical Sciences, the British Academy, the Royal Academy of Engineering and the Royal Society.</p>
