<p>British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak is being criticised for using a helicopter for a short trip from Southampton to London and back — a distance that according to people could have been covered in just over an hour on the train, UK-based media outlets reported.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The recent splurge of a £1,000-an-hour journey funded by the taxpayer has been labelled a "photo opportunity" as Sunak travelled to Southampton to promote a policy.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Media reports mentioned the flight records that showed that the copter left from RAF Northolt at around 8:53 am (local time) reportedly on May 9, before landing at Wellington Barracks in Westminster to pick up Sunak. Later, it returned to Battersea Heliport in London around 1:00 pm (local time).</p>

<p>As quoted by The Mirror, a Labour source said: "While Keir Starmer was working with 20 new Labour councils to bring in new cost of living action plans, Rishi Sunak was gallivanting around in a helicopter for a journey which would have taken an hour on the train. Last week, the British public told the Prime Minister to get his head out of the clouds - it seems he just isn't listening."&nbsp;</p>

<p>Meanwhile, the prime minister's spokesman defended the trip, saying: "His transport will vary depending on his time and where he's going to make the best use of both his time and in the interest of the taxpayer. Obviously, there's a lot of pressure on his time and he wants to make the most effective use of that time. Sometimes being able to get to and from places quickly is useful."&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>Cost of living crisis in UK</strong></h2>

<p>Such incidents have previously happened in Sunak's tenure in office, as citizens and members of the opposition pointed out his taste for luxury. He used a taxpayer-funded private jet to Scotland to launch "green" tax breaks in January, then he also used the plane to make short trips to Blackpool and Leeds.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The controversy regarding the trip has emerged amid a cost-of-living crisis, which is expected to worsen further as the Bank of England on Thursday (May 11) lifted its key interest rate to the highest level since the 2008 financial crisis. The inflation remained stubbornly high but the economy would now avoid recession this year. The BoE hiked the rate by a quarter-point to 4.5 per cent -- its 12th increase in a row with UK annual inflation stuck above 10 per cent, fuelling a cost-of-living crisis across Britain.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The issue of the cost of living crisis in the UK has been highlighted by a survey which shows that 10 per cent of young adults admit to shoplifting. According to Office for National Statistics (ONS), the prices for basic necessities started rising more quickly than household earnings, which is encouraging young individuals to shoplift.&nbsp;</p>

Rishi Sunak faces flak for taking VIP helicopter trip for short distance

UK prime minister Rishi Sunak flew to the country's south coast and back by taxpayer funded helicopter ride on Tuesday and displayed his fondness for short-distance air travel yet again. The trip would have taken over an hour by train with a charge of £30 for a return fare, whereas an equivalent private flight costs £6,000 return.

<p>He highlighted that the coronation ceremony, which is the first in seven decades, is not only just a sumptuous display of pageantry, but also a proud expression of history, culture, and traditions.&nbsp;</p>

<p>He noted, "A vivid demonstration of the modern character of our country. And a cherished ritual through which a new era is born... UK PM Rishi Sunak reads from biblical book at King Charles' multi-faith coronation

UK PM Rishi Sunak's Conservative Party suffered a net loss of 235 seats on local councils in England with voters unhappy over political scandals, sluggish economic growth and high inflation.

Sunak's Conservative party suffers net loss of 235 seats in early election results

After a year of political scandals, skyrocketing inflation, and sluggish economic growth, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak's Conservatives were facing a dismal set of local election results on Friday. The council results in England will be the biggest and potentially final test of voter opinion before the anticipated 2019 general election, despite the fact that governing parties frequently struggle at mid-term elections.

UK: Rishi Sunak says Conservative Party losses disappointing so far

<p><strong>UK local elections 2023:</strong> Early results showed the ruling Conservative Party had lost around 200 seats in the elections for over 8,000 seats on 230 local councils across England. The opposition Labour Party and the centrist Liberal Democrats made significant gains, with the latter seizing control from the Conservatives in Windsor, an affluent town west of London. The elections are seen as a test of support for Prime Minister Rishi Sunak's government as the country approaches a general election due by the end of 2024.</p>

<p>While some contests focused on local issues such as potholes and garbage collection, voters seemed to have punished the Conservatives for the turmoil that engulfed the party under former Prime Minister Boris Johnson, who resigned amid multiple scandals.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The Rishi Sunak administration in the UK&nbsp;is planning to use&nbsp;redundant cruise ships, ferries and barges to house asylum seekers in ports around the country, at the cost of millions of pounds to the taxpayer, according to an exclusive report by<em> The Guardian.</em>&nbsp;</p>

<p>With the lawmakers failing to clear the asylum backlog as hotels remain filled to the brim, officials have been told to look at alternatives. As many as 10 cruise liners have been sought, including a&nbsp;used cruise ship from Indonesia which could be docked at a few of the UK ports, big enough to house them.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Bibby Stockholm, an accommodation vessel owned by Bibby Line, will be anchored at the Portland port from early June with the first batch of migrants soon taking their place on it. More asylum seekers will arrive onboard during the summer.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Meanwhile, Peel Ports, which&nbsp;operates port infrastructure in the Birkenhead area said it will only accommodate the plans if full engagement is guaranteed by the local council.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Moreover, a&nbsp;leading maritime company has also conducted a feasibility study into housing migrants on abandoned oil rigs, according to the publication. However, the government is unlikely to give a nod to the proposal due to safety and logistical difficulties.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>We will detain you: Sunak to illegal migrants</strong></h2>

<p>At the start of the year, Sunak, amid much pomp laid out five pledges for 2023, of which one was to&nbsp;stop migrants from entering the UK illegally.&nbsp;Afterwards, Home Secretary Suella Braverman tabled the Illegal Migration Bill&nbsp;before the House of Commons with the Tory leader simultaneously issuing an ultimatum to illegal migrants crossing the English Channel.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"Stopping the boats is not just my priority, it's the people's priority. Our position is clear, if you arrive here illegally you will not be able to claim asylum," said Sunak.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"People must know that if they come here illegally it will result in their detention and swift removal. Once this happens, and they know it will happen — they will not come, and the boats will stop."&nbsp;</p>

<p>However, Sunak's enthusiasm appeared to take a hit last month when he said his plan to stop small boats crossing the Channel "won't happen overnight". He also&nbsp;pushed the timeline to achieve his goals beyond the general elections.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Notably, former interior minister Priti Patel in April last year brought the "Rwanda Asylum Policy"&nbsp;under which immigrants arriving in the UK through "illegal"&nbsp;means would be sent to the African country of Rwanda to seek asylum.</p>

<p>The immigration crisis reached a peak in 2022 when over 45,000 people entered the UK, breaking the previous year's record by more than 17,000.&nbsp;</p>

The Rishi Sunak administration in the UK is planning to use redundant cruise ships, ferries and barges to house asylum seekers in ports around the country, at the cost of millions of pounds to the taxpayer, according to an exclusive report by The Guardian. With the lawmakers failing to clear the asylum backlog as hotels remain filled to the brim, officials have been told to look at alternatives. As many as 10 cruise liners have been sought, including a used cruise ship from Indonesia which could be docked at a few of the UK ports, big enough to house them. Bibby Stockholm, an accommodation vessel owned by Bibby Line, will be anchored at the Portland port from early June with the first batch of migrants soon taking their place on it. More asylum seekers will arrive onboard during the summer. Meanwhile, Peel Ports, which operates port infrastructure in the Birkenhead area said it will only accommodate the plans if full engagement is guaranteed by the local council. Moreover, a leading maritime company has also conducted a feasibility study into housing migrants on abandoned oil rigs, according to the publication. However, the government is unlikely to give a nod to the proposal due to safety and logistical difficulties. WATCH | UK announces law to stop illegal immigrants × We will detain you: Sunak to illegal migrants At the start of the year, Sunak, amid much pomp laid out five pledges for 2023, of which one was to stop migrants from entering the UK illegally. Afterwards, Home Secretary Suella Braverman tabled the Illegal Migration Bill before the House of Commons with the Tory leader simultaneously issuing an ultimatum to illegal migrants crossing the English Channel. "Stopping the boats is not just my priority, it's the people's priority. Our position is clear, if you arrive here illegally you will not be able to claim asylum," said Sunak. "People must know that if they come here illegally it will result in their detention and swift removal. Once this happens, and they know it will happen — they will not come, and the boats will stop." However, Sunak's enthusiasm appeared to take a hit last month when he said his plan to stop small boats crossing the Channel "won't happen overnight". He also pushed the timeline to achieve his goals beyond the general elections. The immigration crisis reached a peak in 2022 when over 45,000 people entered the UK, breaking the previous year's record by more than 17,000. (With inputs from agencies) WATCH WION LIVE HERE:

UK: Sunak administration to acquire disused cruise ships to house asylum seekers

British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak is under investigation by the Parliamentary Watchdog. The probe relates to a possible failure to declare shares his wife holds in an agency benefiting from a recent budget. Now, it has emerged that the UK PM's wife is a shareholder in a company that received public money; and the Labour Party is seeking answers. The Sunday Times reported an education start-up that an investment company controlled by Akshata Murty has a financial interest in, was given UK grant money. In 2022, the education start-up study hall received a government grant through a body called Innovate UK, which helps companies develop new products or services. Decisions on what innovative UK will invest in are made up by a panel of funders. Reports say there is no suggestion of Akshata Murty doing anything wrong. However, this will likely increase calls for more transparency about the Sunak family's money and business interests.

Who is Dominic Raab, the Tory leader who quit as deputy PM over bullying complaints?

<p>The Downing Street in London is having its politically significant moments of scandalous exits. From the most sought-after corridor of power in Britain, the Deputy Prime Minister Dominic Raab resigned from Prime Minister Rishi Sunak's cabinet after it was proven in an official inquiry that Raab bullied civil servants in the offices he held over the past few years.&nbsp;</p>

<p>To put it simply, Raab had to resign because an inquiry found that he was a toxic boss in nearly every Downing Street secretariat he was sent to during and before Rishi Sunak's times as British Prime Minister.</p>

<p>Hours later, Raab was replaced by Oliver Dowden as UK deputy prime minister. Alex Chalk was appointed justice secretary, another designation Raab held in the Sunak cabinet.&nbsp;</p>

From the most sought-after corridor of power in Britain, the Deputy Prime Minister Dominic Raab resigned from Prime Minister Rishi Sunak's cabinet after it was proven in an official inquiry that Raab bullied civil servants in the offices he held over the past few years. To put it simply, Raab had to resign because an inquiry found that he was a toxic boss in nearly every Downing Street secretariat he was sent to during and before Rishi Sunak's times as British Prime Minister. Hours later, Raab was replaced by Oliver Dowden as UK deputy prime minister. Alex Chalk was appointed justice secretary, another designation Raab held in the Sunak cabinet.
