During the study, the patients were asked to take up yoga or attend health education classes for a month. The two groups were also asked to take part in 75-minute sessions twice a week for four weeks.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, Karen Mustian, the lead researcher said she was advising doctors to recommend yoga to their cancer patients as an option.&nbsp;

"In the last 20 years, we've moved beyond asking the question, should we be encouraging things like traditional exercise yoga, tai chi for patients? The answer is yes," said Mustian.

This time around, 100 and 73 patients aged 60 or older were enrolled in the trial and split into two - the yoga and health education class groups.&nbsp;

The result showed that yoga helped relieve fatigue and maintain quality of life. The researchers, based on the findings concluded that yoga was a game-changer and doctors needed to get over their preconceived notions about the ancient Indian practice.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Although yet to be peer-reviewed, the study demonstrated the advice of "taking it easy", if a person was sick was not as effective as previously thought.&nbsp;

<h2>What did the researchers find?</h2>

According to the UK-based newspaper report, the new treatment which tested the drug avutometinib alone and in combination with defactinib in 29 patients said that the latter helped block tumour growth and managed to keep the disease away for years. The combination drug worked for 45 per cent of the patients who saw their tumours shrink significantly, reported the Guardian.&nbsp;

It was also found to be nearly two times more effective than the next best treatment for ovarian cancer, trametinib, whose response rate to the disease was 26 per cent. Meanwhile, all patients who were a part of this trial had low-grade serous ovarian cancer, which is said to typically affect younger women.&nbsp;

At least 60 per cent of women with a particular mutation, KRAS-driven ovarian tumours, witnessed a better outcome of the drug combination. However, it also showed promising results for those without the mutation and worked for 29 per cent of patients, said the media report.&nbsp;

One of the drugs avutometinib is a dual RAF and MEK inhibitor which is said to block both and help control cancer growth and survival.&nbsp;

However, previous studies have shown that it can become ineffective over time as tumours develop resistance to treatment, but when combined with defactinib, which stops the protein, it encourages drug resistance. Therefore, defactinib makes avutometinib more than four times effective than when the latter was used alone.&nbsp;

The global lead investigator of the study, Dr Susana Banerjee, said that the findings could represent a “significant breakthrough,” as per The Guardian. Typically, breast cancer patients undergo surgery and receive chemotherapy or radiation treatment before starting hormone-blocking drugs to prevent the disease from recurring.&nbsp;

The addition of ribociclib to hormone therapy resulted in a "significant improvement" in disease-free survival for patients with hormone receptor-positive, HER2-negative early-stage breast cancer, which is the most common subtype of the disease, accounting for nearly 70% of cases in the US.

“Patients diagnosed with HR+/HER2- early breast cancer remain at risk of cancer recurrence, given that one-third of patients diagnosed with stage II and more than half of those diagnosed with stage III will unfortunately experience a return of their cancer,” said Shreeram Aradhye, MD, President, Global Drug Development and Chief Medical Officer, Novartis.

A study led by McGill University in Canada and the University of California-Davis in the United States, suggests that modern humans descended from two populations that coexisted in Africa for a million years before merging in several independent groups&nbsp;across the continent.&nbsp; 
 
It was this migration and DNA mixing with one another over a period of hundreds of thousands of years that made modern humans, finds the study, which now counters some of the dominant theories about human origins in Africa.

“At different times, people who embraced the classic model of a single origin for Homo sapiens suggested that humans first emerged in either East or Southern Africa,” said co-lead author on the research and population geneticist in the Department of Anthropology at the University of California, Davis, Brenna Henn.

Over the years, paleoanthropologists and geneticists have found evidence that points to Africa as the origin of our species as some of the oldest fossils which may have belonged to modern humans have been unearthed there.&nbsp;

Additionally, “limited fossil and archaeological records of human occupation from sites as far afield as Morocco, Ethiopia, and South Africa show that Homo sapiens were to be found living across the continent as far back as at least 300,000 years ago,” said Henn.&nbsp;

What did Henn and her team find?

The research team analysed the genomes of 290 living people from four geographically and genetically diverse African groups. The systemic test was done in order to trace the similarities and differences between the populations over the past million years and gain insight into the genetic interconnections and human evolution across the continent.&nbsp;

Henn and her colleagues also developed software to run large-scale simulations of human history. They also created multiple scenarios of different populations existing in Africa over different periods of time to observe which one could have produced the diversity of DNA found in people alive today.

They studied the DNA from a range of African groups like Nama (Khoe-San) a group of hunter-gatherers from South Africa, the Mende who are farmers living in Sierra Leone, the Gumuz who are recent descendants of a hunter-gatherer group from Ethiopia; and the Amhara and Oromo (agriculturalists from eastern Africa).&nbsp;

Notably, living Africans have a vast amount of genetic diversity compared with other people since humans had lived and evolved there for hundreds of thousands of years with a relatively small gene pool before they began expanding to other continents.&nbsp;

“We used a new algorithm to rapidly test hundreds of possible scenarios,” said Simon Gravel, co-senior author of the paper and Associate Professor in the Department of Human Genetics at McGill University. He added that the algorithm was initially written to understand the risk of genetic disease and how it varies across populations, “and it led us to this deep dive into human origins.”

The researchers also included some Eurasian genetic material to include traces of colonial incursions and mixing in Africa and also looked at the genome of a 50,000-year-old Neanderthal found in Croatia. According to Henn and her colleagues, the ancestors of our species existed in two distinct populations which, for the purposes of this research, were called Stem1 and Stem2.

The study showed that some 600,000 years ago, a small group of humans with their origins from Stem1 went on to become the Neanderthals. On the other hand, Stem1 endured in Africa for hundreds of thousands of years after that, as did Stem2. The study also found that the two populations were not all that different.&nbsp;

Therefore, the researchers concluded that people moved between Stem1 and Stem2 and paired off to have children and thus mixing their DNA. However, their model does not reveal if Stem1 and Stem2 people lived in Africa but speculated that the groups moved a lot over time.&nbsp;

The researchers also found despite these mergers 120,000 years ago, when humans also supposedly experienced a dramatic shift in African history, as the model indicates, people with solely Stem1 or solely Stem2 ancestry appear to have survived.&nbsp;

What did Henn and her team find? The research team analysed the genomes of 290 living people from four geographically and genetically diverse African groups. The systemic test was done in order to trace the similarities and differences between the populations over the past million years and gain insight into the genetic interconnections and human evolution across the continent. Notably, living Africans have a vast amount of genetic diversity compared with other people since humans had lived and evolved there for hundreds of thousands of years with a relatively small gene pool before they began expanding to other continents. “We used a new algorithm to rapidly test hundreds of possible scenarios,” said Simon Gravel, co-senior author of the paper and Associate Professor in the Department of Human Genetics at McGill University. He added that the algorithm was initially written to understand the risk of genetic disease and how it varies across populations, “and it led us to this deep dive into human origins.” The researchers also included some Eurasian genetic material to include traces of colonial incursions and mixing in Africa and also looked at the genome of a 50,000-year-old Neanderthal found in Croatia. “We need to better understand the extent of the weak layers that sit beneath the submarine landslides in Antarctica that make this area unstable. We also need to better understand exactly how climate is influencing the triggering of these submarine landslides. This will give us a better understanding of the future risks posed by these hazardous events,” Jenny Gales told the Indian Express.

Stanford University's Bao Research Group has developed a soft, flexible electronic skin that can mimic the process that causes a finger or a toe to react and move away when poked, or when they touch a hot surface.

"This current e-skin really has all the attributes that we have been dreaming about," says chemical engineer Zhenan Bao of Stanford University.&nbsp;

This technology, as per Nature, could lead to the development of a covering for prosthetic limbs. The best part about this breakthrough soft "e-skin" is that it can directly transmit electrical signals to the wearer's brain to allow them to ‘feel’ pressure, strain or changes in temperature.

Unlike previous attempts, this new e-skin uses soft integrated circuits to convert sensory information, such as pressure and temperature, into electrical signals similar to nerve impulses.&nbsp;

The goal is to use this technology in prosthetic limbs to provide sensory feedback and improve control for amputees.&nbsp;

In an experiment, the newly developed electronic skin was tested on a rat. The e-skin was connected to the rat's somatosensory cortex, which is the region of the brain involved in processing physical sensations.&nbsp;

When the electronic skin was stimulated by touch, it generated an electrical signal that was transmitted to the brain. From there, the signal passed through an artificial synapse to the rat's sciatic nerve located in its leg, resulting in a twitching motion of the limb.

Bao says that in the future, they hope to develop a less invasive system that won't have to be implanted into the brain.

"We envision that for people who lost their limbs, we don’t have to implant into the brain," she said as per Nature.&nbsp;

"We could have an implant in the peripheral nervous system."

The current version of the e-skin has to be wired to an external power source, but the researchers hope to ultimately develop a wireless device.&nbsp;"This new e-skin runs on just 5 volts and can detect stimuli similar to real skin," described Weichen Wang, a doctoral candidate in Bao's lab, the first author of the paper.

Rising temperatures, heat waves, droughts and forest fires have all become a reality. With climate change steadily affecting the Earth's temperatures, the need to stay cool has become more pressing.&nbsp;As per a recent report, to combat the heat, billions of people are now opting for cheap, pocket-friendly air conditioners that are further adding to the rising temperatures.

In tropical countries,&nbsp;the rising temperatures have increasingly begun pushing normal summer temperatures into dangerous territory, and in temperate countries, heat waves that were previously unimaginable are becoming more common.

<h2>How are people dealing with the heat?</h2>

According to a report by Sustainable Energy for All, to deal with the rising temperatures, approximately 2.4 billion rural and urban poor individuals are on the verge of purchasing the most affordable cooling appliance available to them, regardless of its efficiency.

The report states that while the mass adoption of inexpensive air conditioners may serve as a quick solution to combat the effects of a hotter climate, it also poses complications for the global energy transition.

<h2>How air conditioners are landing us in 'hot soup'</h2>

In a special report released in 2018, the International Energy Agency (IEA) had warned that cooling would be "one of the leading contributors to global electricity demand over the next three decades".&nbsp;The IEA estimates that approximately 10 new air conditioners will be sold every second between now and 2050.

The increased use of air conditioning puts additional strain on local power supplies and undermines efforts to shift from fossil fuels to renewable energy sources.

<h2>How much energy are air conditioners consuming?</h2>

Currently, space cooling—which includes fans, dehumidifiers, and air conditioners—consumes over 2,000 terawatt hours (TWh) of electricity annually. To put this into perspective, that is two and a half times the total electricity used across Africa. As per the IEA, this&nbsp;accounts for around 10 per cent of global electricity consumption.&nbsp;

Bloomberg reports that based on existing policies and targets, this demand is projected to surge more than three times, to 6,200 TWh by 2050, with nearly 70 per cent of the increase attributed to residential air conditioning units.

In certain regions, such as parts of the US and the Middle East, space cooling already surpasses two-thirds of peak electricity demand on hot days. For instance, in Saudi Arabia, air conditioning alone accounts for 70 per cent of the country's total annual electricity demand.&nbsp;

<h2>What is&nbsp;the expected energy consumption of air conditioners in the future?</h2>

By 2050, space cooling is expected to overtake appliances as the largest consumer of electricity in buildings worldwide. To fulfil this demand, an additional capacity of 2,500 gigawatts would be required, which is equivalent to the current combined energy generation capacity of the United States, Europe, and India, according to the IEA.

The report predicts that countries with anticipated significant growth in cooling demand, particularly India, China, and Indonesia, would need to invest in substantial and expensive peak power capacity to meet the projected cooling needs.

<h2>But how are ACs contributing to rising temperatures?</h2>

It is all about the efficiency of cooling appliances.&nbsp;Often, consumers prioritise affordability over energy efficiency when purchasing new air conditioners.&nbsp;

As per the IEA,&nbsp;the average air conditioner sold in 2018 was only half as efficient as the typical appliance and only one-third as efficient as the best technology on the market.

<h2>What can countries do to promote energy-efficient air conditioners?</h2>

According to the IEA, countries could reward the purchase of energy-efficient cooling devices. As per the agency, implementing policies that mandate or incentivise the purchase of more efficient air conditioning units could reduce energy demand by 45 per cent and also lower investment and operational costs for the electricity network by $3 trillion.

<h2>Would that be enough?</h2>

Sadly, no. Even under an optimistic scenario that assumes the widespread adoption of more efficient cooling technology, the projected energy demand is likely to exceed the IEA's estimates for global warming by no more than 2 degrees Celsius.

Research conducted by the Centre for Sustainable Cooling at the University of Birmingham suggests that if everyone had access to the necessary cooling, including refrigerators for food and medicine, as well as air conditioners in cars and homes, the associated energy demand would be three times higher than the IEA's estimates by 2030.

However, according to a report by Sustainable Energy for All, an estimated 1.2 billion people living in rural and urban poor communities still lack&nbsp;access to cooling, including refrigeration and air conditioning.

<h2>How many ACs would the world require to cool the entire human population?&nbsp;</h2>

To meet the growing cooling needs, the Centre for Sustainable Cooling estimates that the world would require an additional 14 billion cooling devices by 2050. This is nearly four times the current number of 3.6 billion devices.

Furthermore, the volume of electricity required to power all these cooling devices, as estimated by the Centre, would amount to more than 80 per cent of the IEA's projected renewable capacity for 2050. In the worst-case scenario where new technologies for improving appliance efficiency are not adopted, this figure could surpass 100 per cent.

The report warns that even with improving AC efficiency, if renewable energy capacity does not continue to expand, the impact of millions more air conditioners would be far more significant. By 2030, it could result in over 2 billion metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent emissions per year, surpassing the entire emissions of the European Union in 2021.

In tropical countries, the rising temperatures have increasingly begun pushing normal summer temperatures into dangerous territory, and in temperate countries, heat waves that were previously unimaginable are becoming more common. How are people dealing with the heat? According to a report by Sustainable Energy for All, to deal with the rising temperatures, approximately 2.4 billion rural and urban poor individuals are on the verge of purchasing the most affordable cooling appliance available to them, regardless of its efficiency. The report states that while the mass adoption of inexpensive air conditioners may serve as a quick solution to combat the effects of a hotter climate, it also poses complications for the global energy transition. The IEA estimates that approximately 10 new air conditioners will be sold every second between now and 2050. The increased use of air conditioning puts additional strain on local power supplies and undermines efforts to shift from fossil fuels to renewable energy sources. How much energy are air conditioners consuming? Currently, space cooling—which includes fans, dehumidifiers, and air conditioners—consumes over 2,000 terawatt hours (TWh) of electricity annually. To put this into perspective, that is two and a half times the total electricity used across Africa. As per the IEA, this accounts for around 10 per cent of global electricity consumption. Bloomberg reports that based on existing policies and targets, this demand is projected to surge more than three times, to 6,200 TWh by 2050, with nearly 70 per cent of the increase attributed to residential air conditioning units. In certain regions, such as parts of the US and the Middle East, space cooling already surpasses two-thirds of peak electricity demand on hot days. For instance, in Saudi Arabia, air conditioning alone accounts for 70 per cent of the country's total annual electricity demand. By 2050, space cooling is expected to overtake appliances as the largest consumer of electricity in buildings worldwide. The report predicts that countries with anticipated significant growth in cooling demand, particularly India, China, and Indonesia, would need to invest in substantial and expensive peak power capacity to meet the projected cooling needs. But how are ACs contributing to rising temperatures? It is all about the efficiency of cooling appliances. Often, consumers prioritise affordability over energy efficiency when purchasing new air conditioners. As per the IEA, the average air conditioner sold in 2018 was only half as efficient as the typical appliance and only one-third as efficient as the best technology on the market. What can countries do to promote energy-efficient air conditioners? According to the IEA, countries could reward the purchase of energy-efficient cooling devices. As per the agency, implementing policies that mandate or incentivise the purchase of more efficient air conditioning units could reduce energy demand by 45 per cent and also lower investment and operational costs for the electricity network by $3 trillion. Would that be enough? Sadly, no. Even under an optimistic scenario that assumes the widespread adoption of more efficient cooling technology, the projected energy demand is likely to exceed the IEA's estimates for global warming by no more than 2 degrees Celsius. Research conducted by the Centre for Sustainable Cooling at the University of Birmingham suggests that if everyone had access to the necessary cooling, including refrigerators for food and medicine, as well as air conditioners in cars and homes, the associated energy demand would be three times higher than the IEA's estimates by 2030. However, according to a report by Sustainable Energy for All, an estimated 1.2 billion people living in rural and urban poor communities still lack access to cooling, including refrigeration and air conditioning. How many ACs would the world require to cool the entire human population? To meet the growing cooling needs, the Centre for Sustainable Cooling estimates that the world would require an additional 14 billion cooling devices by 2050. This is nearly four times the current number of 3.6 billion devices. Furthermore, the volume of electricity required to power all these cooling devices, as estimated by the Centre, would amount to more than 80 per cent of the IEA's projected renewable capacity for 2050. In the worst-case scenario where new technologies for improving appliance efficiency are not adopted, this figure could surpass 100 per cent. The report warns that even with improving AC efficiency, if renewable energy capacity does not continue to expand, the impact of millions more air conditioners would be far more significant. By 2030, it could result in over 2 billion metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent emissions per year, surpassing the entire emissions of the European Union in 2021. This has raised concerns about interactive election interference on a large scale.

A study by NewsGuard, an organisation that monitors misinformation, tested ChatGPT and Google's Bard chatbot and found that they were capable of generating false news narratives when prompted. This highlights the potential for AI tools to mass-produce variations of fake stories, which raises concerns about the deliberate dissemination of false information.

On Friday, NewsGuard also announced that there has been a two-fold increase in AI-generated news and information websites, which have more than doubled to 125 in two weeks.

<h2>OpenAI CEO Sam Altman's warning about&nbsp;ChatGPT and other AI models</h2>

Earlier this week, on Tuesday, Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, and the creator of ChatGPT, warned that the latest generation of AI models has the potential to manipulate users.

Highlighting the need for regulation, public education, and transparency regarding the use of AI, he said, "The general ability of these models to manipulate and persuade, to provide one-on-one interactive disinformation is a significant area of concern."

"Regulation would be quite wise: people need to know if they’re talking to an AI, or if content that they’re looking at is generated or not. The ability to really model … to predict humans, I think is going to require a combination of companies doing the right thing, regulation and public education," he added.

<h2>AI-powered disinformation</h2>

Professor Michael Wooldridge of the Alan Turing Institute identified AI-powered disinformation as his primary concern about the technology. He noted that generative AI can generate disinformation on an "industrial scale".

"Right now in terms of my worries for AI, it is number one on the list. We have elections coming up in the UK and the US and we know social media is an incredibly powerful conduit for misinformation. But we now know that generative AI can produce disinformation on an industrial scale."&nbsp;

He said chatbots like ChatGPT can produce tailored misinformation targeted at specific political groups or demographics, adding that "it's an afternoon's work for somebody with a bit of programming experience to create fake identities and just start generating these fake news stories."

<h2>AI-generated images</h2>

AI-generated imagery is another problem. Remember the pictures of Donald Trump getting arrested and the Pope in a 'dope' puffer jacket? That's the work of artificial intelligence.

Earlier this year, as these images went viral,&nbsp;many people&nbsp;raised concerns about the potential use of generated imagery to cause confusion and misinformation.

However, Sam Altman, while addressing US Senators, suggested that these concerns might be exaggerated or blown out of proportion. He compared AI-generated images to the earlier adoption of Photoshop.

He said that people eventually developed an understanding that images could be manipulated.

"Photoshop came on to the scene a long time ago and for a while people were really quite fooled by Photoshopped images – then pretty quickly developed an understanding that images might be Photoshopped."

However, in spite of Altman's statement, as AI capabilities advance, there are concerns that it is becoming&nbsp;increasingly difficult to trust things on social media and that as the technology develops further, the difficulty in differentiating between misinformation and purposeful disinformation will only increase.

<h2>AI and voice cloning</h2>

In January, voice cloning gained significant attention when a manipulated video of US President Joe Biden surfaced. The original footage, in which he discussed sending tanks to Ukraine, was altered using voice simulation technology to make it appear as though he was attacking transgender people. The doctored video was widely circulated on social media platforms.

The growing availability of voice cloning services, including the cloning of corporate executives and public figures, raises concerns about its potential misuse.

Recorded Future, a US cybersecurity firm, warned that rogue actors could sell voice cloning services online.

Alexander Leslie, an analyst with the firm, said that the technology is improving and poses a heightened threat as the US presidential election approaches.&nbsp;

"Without widespread education and awareness, this could become a real threat vector as we head into the presidential election," he said.

Steven Brill, the co-CEO of NewsGuard, expressed concern about the potential misuse of chatbot technology by malicious individuals to create varied versions of fake stories. He said, "the danger is someone using it deliberately to pump out these false narratives".

While only 18 per cent of the boomers said they believe in the concept of the land of the damned, a whopping 32 per cent of Gen Z said they believe in the netherworlds.

And it's not just Gen Z,&nbsp;millennials too, believe in hell. This coming from generations that more often than not identify as atheist is sure to leave you bamboozled. After all, the idea of damnation must belong to an age where people and their lives are all shaped by the fear of hellfire and punishment after death.

<h2>Is the study trustworthy?</h2>

The results are from the 'World Values Survey',&nbsp;one of the world's largest and most widely used academic social surveys.

Conducted by the Policy Institute at King’s College, London, it found that in the United Kingdom, the younger generations are also more likely to believe in life after death than older generations.

<h2>How stark is the difference between Gen Z and boomers?</h2>

World Values Survey&nbsp;found that while 32 per cent of both Gen Z and millennials believe in hell, only 24 per cent of the pre-war generation, and at 18 per cent, an even lesser percentage of baby boomers think damnation awaits people after death.

In comparison, only 27 per cent of millennials and Gen Z see themselves as religious, while 46 per cent of the pre-war generation identified as religiously inclined. In 1981, 69 per cent of the older generation said they were religious.

<h2>How many people were surveyed and who exactly are the Gen Z?</h2>

The statistics for the United Kingdom are based on a representative sample of 3,056 adults interviewed by Ipsos through a combination of face-to-face and online surveys.

Calgary Herald reports that the study classifies different generations based on their birth years for this analysis. The pre-war generation referred to individuals born before 1945, baby boomers included those born between 1945 and 1965, Gen X encompassed individuals born from 1966 to 1979, millennials referred to those born between 1980 and 1995, and Gen Z included individuals born from 1996 onwards.

<h2>If not, hell do the people believe in heaven and god?</h2>

As per the study, it's just hell. Between 1981 and 2022, the British public overall also stopped believing in heaven. From 1981 to 2022, the number of people who believe in heaven fell from 57 per cent to 41 per cent.

The data also reveals that just under half of Britons expressed a belief in God in 2022, a decrease from three-quarters in 1981. Among the 24 nations included in the study, only five now show a lower likelihood of believing in God compared to the UK, with China having the lowest percentage at 17 per cent.

<h2>The allure of something 'more than this'</h2>

Bobby Duffy, director of the Policy Institute, commented on the findings and said that while organised religion's cultural influence has continued to decline in the UK, the belief in "something" beyond this life remains strong, especially among the youngest generations.

"While the youngest generations continue to have lower attachment to formal religion, many of them have similar or even greater need to believe that there is 'more than this'."&nbsp;

Beliefs regarding life after death have remained consistent over the past four decades, with slightly less than half of the public consistently accepting that they believe in it.&nbsp;Despite their relatively lower level of faith, younger individuals demonstrate higher levels of belief. Last year, slightly over half of Gen Z and millennials expressed their belief in life after death, which is significantly higher than the 35 per cent of baby boomers and 39 per cent of the pre-war generation.

New York City&nbsp;may soon sink under the sea predicts a new research. The city is sinking due to the weight of its towering skyscrapers. Coupled with the rising sea levels, this weight is pushing New York under at an average rate of 1-2 millimetres per year; some areas are sinking at twice this rate.&nbsp;Since 1950, the water surrounding New York City has risen by approximately 9 inches (22 centimetres).&nbsp;The rising water levels are a looming&nbsp;threat to&nbsp;the&nbsp;8.4 million people of the city.

Researchers behind the study published in the Earth’s Future journal warn that "a deeply concentrated population of 8.4 million people faces varying degrees of hazard from inundation in New York City."

<h2>Why is New York sinking?</h2>

New York's iconic landmarks like the Empire State Building and the Chrysler Building, or rather their weight, are causing the city&nbsp;to sink.

As per the research estimates, New York City's buildings, including iconic landmarks like the Empire State Building and the Chrysler Building, weigh a total of 1.68 trillion pounds — equivalent to the weight of 140 million elephants. This enormous weight pushes down on a mixture of different materials beneath the city, causing it to sink just a little bit every year.&nbsp;

It says that while the city's largest buildings are constructed on solid bedrock, such as schist, the ground beneath also contains a mixture of sand and clays. This mixture contributes to the natural sinking occurring along much of the US east coast as the land adjusts to the retreat of glaciers following the last ice age.

<h2>Were the iconic buildings a mistake?</h2>

Tom Parsons, a geophysicist at the US Geological Survey, and lead author of the research emphasised&nbsp;that constructing large buildings in New York was not a mistake, but it is essential to consider that each new construction further compresses the ground.

He said that the softer the soil, the more the buildings compress it.

Parsons&nbsp;explains that while there is no immediate cause for panic, the ongoing sinking process increases the vulnerability to flooding.

"It’s not something to panic about immediately, but there’s this ongoing process that increases the risk of inundation from flooding."

No, the threat exists for all the coastal cities worldwide.

It&nbsp;further cautioned that artificial intelligence LLMs like ChatGPT and Bard that imitate understanding, processing, and producing human communication could be misused to "generate and disseminate highly convincing disinformation".&nbsp;

This disinformation, as per the WHO, can be in textual, audio or video form and would be difficult to differentiate from reliable health content for the public.

As per SciTechDaily, just as prolonged periods without food can lead to hunger, a lack of social interaction can lead to a craving response in the brain, driving us to seek social connections again.&nbsp;

This is supported by the "social homeostasis" theory, which proposes that there is a homeostatic system in place to independently regulate our need for social interaction.&nbsp;

Although our understanding of the psychological reactions to social isolation remains limited, the study’s authors propose that lowered energy may be part of our homeostatic response to a lack of social contact and a potential precursor of the more detrimental effects of long-term social isolation.

The study involved 30 female volunteers who, on three separate days, spent eight hours in isolation without social contact, without food, or with both social contact and food. They reported their stress, mood, and fatigue levels multiple times throughout the day, while physiological stress responses such as heart rate and cortisol were recorded by the scientists.&nbsp;

Data from 87 participants who had spent at least an eight-hour period in isolation were used, and their stress and behavioural effects were assessed several times a day for seven days.

The results of the laboratory study led by Giorgia Silani from the University of Vienna showed similarities between social isolation and food deprivation, with both inducing lowered energy and heightened fatigue.&nbsp;

"In the lab study, we found striking similarities between social isolation and food deprivation. Both states induced lowered energy and heightened fatigue, which is surprising given that food deprivation literally makes us lose energy, while social isolation would not", said first authors Ana Stijovic and Paul Forbes.

The authors propose that lowered energy may be a part of our homeostatic response to a lack of social contact and a potential precursor of some more detrimental effects of long-term social isolation.&nbsp;

"It is well-known that long-term loneliness and fatigue are related, but we know little about the immediate mechanisms that underlie this link. "This means that it will now be easier than ever for everyone to try the new Bing and Edge by simply signing into Bing with your Microsoft account," he said.

According to him,&nbsp;the services have been enhanced with the ability to work with images as well as texts. In the future, Microsoft intends to add video features to the mix.

The executive said that a Bing "Image Creator" was recently integrated into Microsoft's AI chatbot's repertoire, which enables it to generate visual, as well as written content.&nbsp; Additionally, the company will be expanding Image Creator's capabilities so that users can use their native languages.

"We are expanding Image Creator to all languages in Bing," said Mehdi, adding, "So, now, you can create images in your native language."

They have found evidence that suggests Homo sapiens had to make three determined attempts to move from western Asia to the west and north before they could settle on the continent.

“The first two of these waves failed but the third succeeded around 42,000 years ago,” said Ludovic Slimak of the University of Toulouse who is leading the excavations in France.&nbsp;“After that, modern humans took over in Europe. The Neanderthals, who had evolved on the continent, died out.”

The origins of one of the important ancient stone tool industries that have been discovered in central France are also disputed in this controversial research. The lithic industry that produced these tools is called Châtelperronian, after the place where the first specimens were discovered in the nineteenth century.

These tools have now been attributed to Neanderthal toolmakers by many scientists. They are notable for their exquisite, narrow blades and technical manufacture.&nbsp;

But Slimak rejects this view. “The Châtelperronian tools are the handiwork of modern humans, and given their similarity to stone tools that were being made in the Middle East, we conclude they were brought there by Homo sapiens as they moved into Europe.”

Professor Chris Stringer of London’s Natural History Museum reportedly said, “This is a provocative and ambitious paper."

“In particular, it argues that the Châtelperronian stone industry, which is usually assumed to be the product of Neanderthals, was actually the work of Homo sapiens. Supposed associations of Neanderthal fossils with Châtelperronian tools must therefore be invalid, he is saying.”

“The third time they came in, modern humans did so with a really huge wave of people and began to build social networks, not with Neanderthals but with individual small separate groups of Homo sapiens in order to build a huge network throughout Europe. And in the end, that is what started the decline of the Neanderthals in Europe.”

Human civilisation needed three attempts, 12,000 years to colonise Europe: Study

These four moons, namely Miranda, Ariel, Umbriel, and Titania, are over 1500 km in diameter and have been studied extensively by scientists.&nbsp;

However, a fresh look at 40-year-old data sent to Earth by NASA's Voyager 2 spacecraft indicates that the four moons may have oceans buried kilometres deep under their surface.

Of these, Titania and Oberon, which orbit the farthest from Uranus, may have oceans buried some 50 kilometres (30 metres) deep. Oceans on Ariel and Umbriel, on the other hand, may be closer to the surface at 30 kilometres (19 miles) deep.

These astonishing findings were shared in a new study published in the Journal of Geophysical Research in December 2022.

Talking to Space.com, Julie Castillo-Rogez, a planetary scientist at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in California and the lead author of this study said: "Finding oceans in the Uranian moons would increase the prospect that [...] ocean worlds are frequent in our solar system, and maybe — by extension — in other solar systems."

The new research can help explain how even in the frigid outer reaches of the solar system, persistent internal heat and a few chemicals can make the Uranian&nbsp;moons watery worlds.

As per the researchers, early in their histories, Uranus' five largest moons — namely Titania, Oberon, Ariel, Umbriel and Miranda — had substantial oceans that ran deep, ranging from 100 km to 150 km (62 miles to 90 miles).

"If the moons had benefited from long-term heating from their planet, then they could have maintained a thick ocean," said Castillo-Rogez.

Europa, a moon of Jupiter, and Enceladus, a moon of Saturn, both have significant subsurface oceans. The gravitational pull of their respective host planets causes these moons to experience deformation in their interiors and icy crusts, a phenomenon known as tidal flexing.&nbsp;

This process generates heat, which as per scientists, may be responsible for maintaining the subsurface water on these moons in a liquid, potentially life-supporting state.

However, Uranus has weaker tidal forces than Jupiter or Saturn, which means that the oceans on its four largest moons are "mostly frozen by now," according to Castillo-Rogez.

To gain a better understanding of the evolution of Uranus's largest moons, her team created a model using data collected from NASA missions that investigated other celestial bodies with subsurface oceans. The team examined findings from the Cassini mission, which studied Saturn's moon Enceladus, the Dawn mission, which explored the dwarf planet Ceres, and the New Horizons mission, which flew by Pluto and its largest moon Charon in 2015.&nbsp;

By analysing data from these missions, the team was able to construct a model of how the moons of Uranus may have formed and evolved over time.

The model created by the team reveals&nbsp;that the Uranian moons likely hold "thin oceans with high salt concentrations". This is likely due to limited internal heat left over from their births and considerable ammonia. The chemical is antifreeze in nature which helps keep water in its liquid form even in very low temperatures.

The researchers also suggest that the subsurface oceans could be habitable environments for microbial life that are adapted to living in extreme environments. They estimate that oceans would contain around 150 grams of salt per litre.&nbsp;Earth's Great Salt Lake in Utah has twice the salt volume but still boasts of life in and around it.

Just three planets down from Earth, this icy alien planet's moons may be hiding oceans of salty water

After 20 years away, giant&nbsp;panda Ya Ya returned home on Thursday to a warm welcome and an outpouring of affection from millions of her online and in-person fans.&nbsp;

Ya Ya landed at Shanghai Pudong International Airport in the afternoon following a 16-hour special FedEx aircraft from Memphis, Tennessee, in the United States.

Her Chinese fans expressed their desire to see Ya Ya in good health and living the rest of her life "at home."

Waving at Ya Ya's aircraft before it landed in Shanghai, local resident Cheng Bei told China Daily,&nbsp;"We all hope that either now or in the future, either at home or abroad, giant pandas can receive love and respect from the whole world. I hope that Ya Ya can recover soon and wish her a long life."

As of Thursday evening, the Sina Weibo hashtag "Ya Ya has landed in Shanghai" had received 430 million views.

Top comments included "After 20 years, our baby finally back" and "I was moved to tears by her return."

Ya Ya is extremely popular in China, but animal specialists say fans will have to wait to see the giant&nbsp;panda because she requires time to adjust to her new living environment.

The panda&nbsp;reached an old age at the age of 23, the equal of nearly 80 human years.

According to the National Forestry and Grassland Administration, Ya Ya was born at the Beijing Zoo and transferred to the Memphis Zoo in Tennessee in 2003 for a joint research and conservation work.&nbsp;

Sun Quanhui, a scientist at World Animal Protection told China Daily that&nbsp;Ya Ya will have to adapt to a new living environment, which may take a while,&nbsp;as she had lived in a different country&nbsp;for 20 years.

"During the time (of adapting), tourists should minimize her disturbance and breeders need to provide her with nutritious food and a suitable living environment to help her get accustomed to the new environment as soon as possible," he said.

Under Chinese regulations, Ya Ya must be quarantined for 30 days to determine whether she has any unknown infections, he said.

Shanghai Zoo has set out a unique quarantine area for Ya Ya, complete with dwellings, sports areas, and food-processing rooms. A significant quantity of bamboo and other food has also been prepared. According to the National Forestry and Grassland Administration, throughout the quarantine period, a team of panda experts from Beijing Zoo would be on standby 24 hours a day.

After Ya Ya has completed her quarantine, she will be sent to the Beijing Zoo, where living quarters, medical services, and food supplies have been provided.

In a new paper published in Science Advances, the authors of the study, Hedvig Skirgård, a Postdoctoral researcher at Australian National University and Simon Greenhill, an Associate Professor at the University of Auckland launched an extensive database of language grammars called Grambank.&nbsp;

With the help of this resource, the authors say they can respond to a variety of linguistic research queries and determine how much grammatical diversity we may lose if the problem is not resolved.

The research claims to show frightening trends. It suggests that we are losing languages and language diversity, and unless we take action, the shared past may disappear. The research team sought to comprehend what grammatical diversity would be lost in addition to the loss of specific languages.

A study has revealed that the media's coverage of climate research is, to a large extent, carried out in a way that doesn't provoke action. It claims that the media coverage doesn't inspire the pro-environmental behaviours needed to address the problem.&nbsp;The study has been published in the Global Environmental Change scientific journal. For it, researchers analysed around 50,000 scientific publications on climate change for the year 2020 and examined which ones made it into the mainstream media.

They found that the media tends to pick research within the natural science field. There was also an evident focus on large-scale climate-based projections that won't happen for many years, reports AFP.

Researchers warned that this approach could cause a "possible distancing reaction on the part of the public."

The study by a group of researchers at the University of Lausanne (UNIL) specialising in geosciences and psychology claimed&nbsp;that "this type of narrative does not activate the mechanisms known from research on psychology that might engage pro-environmental behaviours in readers."

"On the contrary, the media's selective choice of certain elements of climate change research could backfire, provoking denial and avoidance."

Co-author Marie-Elodie Perga, a professor at the UNIL Institute of Earth Surface Dynamics, suggested&nbsp;that media should strive to "show that climate change has direct consequences on our lifestyles, our immediate environment or our finances".

Another study co-author, Fabrizio Butera, a UNIL psychology professor warned&nbsp;that such coverage can be harmful and that "individuals exposed to these facts, not feeling directly concerned by them, will tend towards a peripheral, superficial and distracted treatment of the information."

"If the goal of mediating research is to have a societal impact, then it seems that we are pushing all the buttons that don't work," said Perga.

They suggested that in order to inspire action, the media should present environmental issues in a "solution-oriented way" and strive to demonstrate how climate change has direct consequences on our lifestyles, our immediate environment, or our finances.&nbsp;

The researchers argued that fear can lead to behavioural change, but only if the problem presented is accompanied by solutions. Research on human behaviour has shown that people are more likely to take action when they believe there is a way to mitigate the problem. Selective and purely descriptive articles that only highlight the negative aspects of climate change can be counterproductive and may result in people ignoring the problem altogether. Thus, they said it is essential to emphasise potential solutions and inspire a sense of empowerment to address the issue, rather than solely focusing on the negative impacts of climate change.

Incidentally, that is the book's name. "Motherhood on Ice" by leading anthropologist Marcia C Inhorn says that the rise of the practice is not because selfish career-driven women want to skirt motherhood and the responsibilities it comes with.&nbsp;

Talking to the Guardian, Inhorn reveals that when she embarked on research for her book, "there was a lot of either blaming women or saying that they’re naïve, stupid and so forth," while in academic circles, a "planned, almost feminist, narrative" blamed women for intentionally hacking their fertility.

However, her research and the more than 150 women she talked to for her book revealed that the problem can be summed up in one word: "Men".

There exists a "mating gap," to put it simply, in the US, there is a dearth of suitable educated men.

Inhorn and her fellow co-authors Dr Pasquale Patrizio, director of the Yale Fertility Center, and Daphna Birenbaum-Carmeli of the University of Haifa&nbsp;found that in the US and in the UK, high-earning working women in their late 30s who opted for freezing their eggs were primarily single because "they just couldn't find that reproductive partner."

"They weren’t freezing to advance; they were facing the overarching problem of partnership."

Inhorn says that this is reflected by the growing gap between men and women pursuing higher education. Four years ago, in 2019, in the US, there were 28 per cent more women opting for higher education. Soon, as per projections, it'll be two university-educated women per one similarly educated man.

Not only this, there is also the "men as partners problem."

Guardian reports that many women told Inhorn of their desire for an egalitarian relationship, i.e., one that is based on equality; even in terms of education level. However, many were ready to settle for someone with lower educational qualifications but had trouble finding a partner who isn't intimidated by their success.

Some even resorted to downplaying or exempting their educational qualifications from their dating profiles. To not "put men off," some hired professionals to help with their profile.

"Sometimes men would joke or insult them about their jobs or say ‘you’re smarter than I am, I can’t go out with you’. I mean, just really blatant kinds of misogyny and discrimination," she told Guardian.

Then there are&nbsp;the "Peter Pans," men who refuse to grow up. "They may be educated men who have money and so forth, but they want to play around and have a lot of fun and may not partner at all, or may not partner well into their 40s and 50s," she explains.

Of the 150 women Inhorn interviewed, only 36 did so because of medical reasons. The anthropologist predicts that with time, egg freezing for career planning will increase among women in their mid to late- 20s, but that partnership problems will remain a key driver.

Researchers from Griffith University in Australia conducted experiments in 2022 with the Chlamydia pneumoniae bacterium, which can infect people and result in pneumonia. It is pertinent to note that this bacteria have been found in the majority of human brains with late-onset dementia.

It has been proven that germs may go up the olfactory nerve in mice, connecting the nasal cavity and the brain. Additionally, nerve infections were worse when the nasal epithelium, the thin tissue that lines the roof of the nasal canal, was damaged.

As a result, the amyloid-beta protein, which is secreted in response to infections, was deposited in the mouse brains in greater amounts. People with Alzheimer's disease have substantial amounts of plaques (or clumps) of this protein as well.

Neuroscientist James St John from Griffith University in Australia reportedly said,&nbsp;"We're the first to show that Chlamydia pneumoniae can go directly up the nose and into the brain where it can set off pathologies that look like Alzheimer's disease."

"We saw this happen in a mouse model, and the evidence is potentially scary for humans as well."

The rapidity with which C. pneumoniae infected the central nervous systems of the mice, infection occurring within 24 to 72 hours, surprised the researchers. Bacteria and viruses may view the nose as a direct path to the brain, according to certain theories.

The groundbreaking AI-based technology uses brain cells generated from patients' blood samples which are then tested for biomarkers when exposed to various antidepressants.&nbsp;

Genetika+, the company then analyses the patient's medical history and genetic data to determine the best drug and correct dosage for a doctor to prescribe.

As per a BBC report, the AI-based technology is still in development and is set to be launched commercially in 2024.

Most EBV infections are small and transient, however, in some cases, the virus can go dormant and reactivate later.&nbsp;

Long-lasting latent infections, i.e., infections by an organism that has for some time been inactive in the body, are&nbsp;associated with a number of cancers as well as several chronic inflammatory disorders.

Researchers at the University of California San Diego have discovered how the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) can exploit genomic weaknesses to trigger cancer, while also decreasing the body's ability to suppress it.&nbsp;

They found that the virus induces cleavage of human chromosome 11, and triggers genomic instability, which can activate a leukaemia-causing oncogene and reduce the function of a major tumour suppressor.&nbsp;

Throughout every person's genome, there are fragile sites that are more prone to producing mutations, breaks, or gaps when replicating, some of which can cause cancer. The researchers found that EBNA1, a viral protein that remains in cells infected with EBV, binds to a fragile site on human chromosome 11, triggering chromosomal breakage.&nbsp;

Examining whole-genome sequencing data for 2,439 cancers across 38 tumour types from the Pan-Cancer Analysis of Whole Genomes project, they found that cancer tumours with detectable EBV had higher levels of chromosome 11 abnormalities. This was found to be true in cases including 100 per cent of head and neck cancer cases.&nbsp;

The findings could help identify at-risk individuals who are susceptible to developing latent infection-associated diseases, as the EBV virus is generally harmless for most people, said the study's first author Julia Li, PhD, a postdoctoral fellow in Cleveland's lab.

"For a ubiquitous virus that is harmless for the majority of the human population, identifying at-risk individuals susceptible to the development of latent infection-associated diseases is still an ongoing effort," she said.

Last year's Tonga volcano explosion packed quite a punch. As per research, the explosion was around 1,000 times more powerful than the nuclear bomb the United States dropped on Japan's Hiroshima in 1945. However, a computer simulation of the event suggests that the western coast of Tofua Island experienced waves as tall as 45 metres in height.&nbsp;

Dr Mohammad Heidarzadeh from the University of Bath, who has previously conducted research on the Tonga volcano eruption, has commented on a new study. He noted&nbsp;that the study benefits from a diverse observation dataset, which has enabled the researchers to create the most detailed modelling of the tsunami to date. He also remarked&nbsp;that the results of the study are consistent with his own&nbsp;research, which suggested that the maximum tsunami wave height was 90 metres.

"Modelling tsunamis from volcano eruptions is a challenging task and this has been nicely done," he said, as quoted by the Guardian. "It is interesting that the results are consistent with our previous study on this event, where we reported a maximum tsunami wave height of 90 metres," he added.

As per Cancer Research UK, cancer must be detected when it is in an early stage. Under the title, TracerX, the analysis talks about the evolution of cancer and its causes.&nbsp;

It is pertinent to note that cancer cells can mutate and is ever-changing. These cells can reach a state where it becomes more aggressive and dodge the immune system. It further spread itself in different parts of the body.&nbsp;

The research was conducted on lung cancer patients, however, it purportedly applies to all types of cancers. For the study, biopsies for over 400 people who are treated at 13 UK hospitals, were taken from different parts of their lung cancer.&nbsp;

Professor Charles Swanton from the Francis Crick Institute and University College London said, "That has never been done before at this scale."&nbsp;

"I don't want to sound too depressing about this, but I think - given the almost infinite possibilities in which a tumour can evolve, and the very large number of cells in a late-stage tumour, which could be several hundred billion cells - then achieving cures in all patients with late-stage disease is a formidable task."

The research, reported by Evening Standard,&nbsp;says that human brain is more alert while playing against machines than it is while playing against humans.

Researchers from University of Florida carried out this study. They observed volunteers play against other people and against machines. The players wore electrodes that mapped their brain activity.

It was found that when they were playing against each other, their brains were in unison “like they were all speaking the same language”.

But when the players were pitted against a ball-serving machine, the neurons in their brains were desynchornised, that is, they were not aligned the same way they were while playing against humans.

“If we have 100,000 people in a football stadium and they’re all cheering together, that’s like synchronisation in the brain, which is a sign the brain is relaxed," said Daniel Ferris, biomedical engineer professor at University of Florida.

“If we have those same 100,000 people but they’re all talking to their friends, they’re busy but they’re not in sync."

Ferris was quoted by Evening Standard.

“In a lot of cases, that desynchronisation is an indication that the brain is doing a lot of calculations as opposed to sitting and idling.”

The researchers said that they found during their study that participants' brain were working harder while playing against the machine.

The research has been published in journal eNeuro.
