<p>PM Modi said that the Rajpath was a symbol of slavery, it was for the British Raj who saw the people of India as slaves and its structure symbolised the same. During the inauguration, he said, today along with its architecture the erstwhile Rajpath’s spirit has also changed. PM Modi also highlighted how steps taken by his government are not just limited to symbols but are now a part of his policies. He then went on to interact and thank all the workers involved in the project, where the PM reportedly also told the workers that he will invite all of them for the January 26, Republic Day parade.</p>

<p>The Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) also released a statement that read, “These steps are in line with Prime Minister’s second Pran for New India in Amrit Kaal: ‘remove any trace of the colonial mindset’”. It added, that this redevelopment also symbolizes the shift of power from erstwhile ‘Rajpath’ from “being an icon of power” ‘Kartavya Path’ “being an example of public ownership and empowerment.”&nbsp;</p>

<p>These modifications were a part of the ambitious Central Vista redevelopment project that began in February 2021, initiated by the Modi government. The PMO also explained the need to improve the infrastructure citing reasons such as the lack of basic amenities like public toilets, drinking water, street furniture and adequate parking space. Furthermore, there was inadequate signage, poor maintenance of water features and haphazard parking, the statement added.&nbsp;</p>

<p>This was stated in the context of how over the years the Rajpath and the adjoining areas of Central Vista Avenue have been witnessing the pressures of increased traffic of visitors which has added stress on the infrastructure. The statement also indicated that this move would also allow fewer disruptions and minimal restrictions on public movement during the Republic Day Parade and other National events conducted on the ceremonial boulevard.&nbsp;</p>

<p><strong>From ‘Kingsway’ to ‘Rajpath’&nbsp;</strong></p>

<p>Under colonial rule, the 3 km long stretch of road running from the Rashtrapati Bhavan to India Gate was called ‘Kingsway’ and was renamed ‘Rajpath’ post-independence. This road was built as a ceremonial boulevard when the British government decided to move their capital from Calcutta (Now Kolkata) to Delhi. In 1911, King George V and his consort Queen Mary also laid the foundational stone which symbolized the ‘new capital’ of the British Raj, the construction went on for several years thereafter.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The ‘Kingsway’ was built by Edwin Lutyens and Herbert Baker, who were eminent architects and urban planners. The former came up with the idea of building the modern imperial city around the central or “ceremonial” axis. This axis was built from the Great Place (renamed Vijay Chowk) to India Gate by the duo. It was named ‘Kingsway’ to honour the erstwhile Emperor of India, King George V, the name was inspired by the Kingsway in London. A prominent boulevard that was named in honour of King Edward VII, father of King George V.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The centrepiece of Lutyens’ plan was the Raisina Hill complex, which was also home to the Viceroy’s House (now Rashtrapati Bhavan), which reportedly along with the North Block and South Block formed the Imperial Secretariat. Meanwhile, Baker created a circular Parliament House near the Rashtrapati Bhavan which was inaugurated in 1927. The rest of the city was built around this structure and took 20 years to complete the construction which was then inaugurated on February 13, 1931, by Viceroy Lord Irwin.&nbsp;</p>

<p>On August 15, 1947, when India attained its independence from British rule the ceremonial boulevard was crowded with people for celebrations. Subsequently, after independence, the ‘Kingsway’ was given a Hindi name ‘Rajpath’ (a literal translation of ‘Kingsway’) while the adjoining ‘Queensway’ was renamed ‘Janpath’. A year after India became a Republic, in 1951, the Rajpath had become the venue for all Republic Day celebrations and parades over the years that followed. Notably, the first Republic Day celebrations were held at Irwin Stadium (now Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium).&nbsp;</p>

<p><strong>To today’s ‘Kartavya Path’</strong></p>

<p>“Rajpath was for the British for whom the people of India were slaves. It was a symbol of colonialism. Now, its architecture has changed, and its spirit has also changed,” said PM Modi during his speech on September 8. The PM while speaking about the Netaji statue said, “At the time of slavery, there was a statue of the representative of the British Raj. Today, the country has also brought to life a modern, strong India by establishing the statue of Netaji at the same place.” On August 15, during his speech at the Red Fort, PM Modi highlighted the need of abolishing symbols of colonialism, which included the installation of a statue of Netaji under the Grand canopy replacing the statue of George V and changing the name and look of the Rajpath.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“However, after 75 years of independence, it is felt that the name of Rajpath needs to be changed, in tune with the values and principles of democracy and a contemporary, new India. The Kartavya Path will also inspire everyone who visits or crosses the road to perform their duties towards the country, the society, and their families,” said Meenakshi Lekhi (the Union Minister of State for External Affairs and Culture) echoing a similar sentiment on Wednesday.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The ‘Kartavya Path’ is set to exhibit, “beautified landscapes, lawns with walkways, added green spaces, refurbished canals, new amenity blocks, improved signages and vending kiosks,” stated the PMO. Some other features include new pedestrian underpasses, improved parking spaces, new exhibition panels and upgraded night lighting that will enhance the public experience.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The new uniform has been designed by a team of eight students and professors from the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT).&nbsp;</p>

<p>The changes in material and pattern were done to make it easy and comfortable to be worn by men and women in the Army.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The new uniform is of digital pattern and also, one of the key features of the uniform is that the soldiers will not have to tuck in the dress as in the new uniform, the belt will be under the dress.</p>

<p>The new camouflage dress is an amalgamation of colours including earthen and olive. It will be introduced in the Indian Army by August this year.</p>

<p>It is also more climate-friendly and suitable for the different kinds of terrain.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

<p>Indian President Ram Nath Kovind honoured the proud winners of the highest gallantry, including the winners of Param Vir Chakra and Ashok Chakra.</p>

<p>Flower petals were showered by four Mi-17 V5 helicopters flying in the wineglass formation.</p>

<p>The indigenous aircraft carrier Vikrant was the star of the show. It was flanked by models of the indigenous missile corvette Kora, destroyer Visakhapatnam, frigate Shivalik on left and P-75 submarine Kalvari, frigate Godavari and destroyer Delhi on the right.</p>

<p>India celebrated its 73rd Republic Day with a grand parade showcasing military might and cultural diversity at Rajpath in the nation's capital, New Delhi.&nbsp;</p>

<p>There were many beautiful moments but the stunning display on bikes by the country's Border Security Force's (BSF) Seema Bhawani Motorcycle team was breathtaking.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

<p>They did a Border Women Salute under Command of Inspector Himanshu Sirohi and went on to do Single Kneeling under Command of Sub Inspector Sonia Banwari. On the other hand, the Chair Riding was performed under command of constable Anima Kumar.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Fish Riding was performed under the command of constable Pushpa with another rider and the double back riding was performed Under the command of constable Rajwinder Kaur with another rider.&nbsp;</p>

Further, the group performed the ladder formation under the command of constable Sangeeta Kumari, and the five women balance was performed under the command of constable Sumita Sikdar with four other riders.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Indian tunes will be the focus of today's "Beating the Retreat" ceremony which will take place at Delhi's Vijay Chowk at 5 pm. The ceremony, held every year on January 29, marks the culmination of the four-day&nbsp;Republic Day celebrations.</p>

<p>In all, there will be 27 performances by bands from the Army, Navy, Air Force, along with bands from the state police and Central armed police force services.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Of the 27 performances, 19 have been composed by Indian musicians. These are ‘Indian Star’, ‘Paharon ki Rani’, ‘Kumaoni Geet’, ‘Jai Janam Bhumi’, ‘Queen of Satpura’, ‘Marooni’, ‘Vijay’, ‘Soldier-My Valentine’, ‘Bhupal’, ‘Vijay Bharat’, ‘Aakash Ganga’, ‘Gangotri’, ‘Namaste India’, ‘Samudrika’, ‘Jai Bharat’, ‘Young India’, ‘Veerta Ki Misal’, ‘Amar Senani’ and ‘Bhumiputra’.&nbsp;</p>

It is the first original martial tune of independent India. The composition of the tune is the combination of 3 paramparic ragas--Paag bilaskhani todi, Raag Bhairavi, Raag Kirvani.</p>

<p>The 8 western tunes are-- ‘Fanfare by Buglers’, ‘Sound Barrier’, ‘Emblazoned’, ‘Twilight’, ‘Alert (Post Horn Gallop)’, ‘Space Flight’, ‘Drummers Call’ and ‘Abide with me’. "Abide with me" is said to be the favourite of the father of the nation Mahatma Gandhi.</p>

<p>The dedication to serve the nation, feeling of satisfaction in performing duty and donning and honouring the uniform is what the woman soldiers of the all-women Assam Rifles Contingent have to say.</p>

<p>For the first time in the history of Assam Rifles and also in the paramilitary an all women Contingent will be saluting the President at the Rajpath this Republic Day on January 26.</p>

<p>This women Contingent is also special as some of the mahila jawans are kin of martyred soldiers, who have been recruited on compassionate ground. Some of them shared their experiences with ANI.</p>

<p>Rifle Woman Sunita Thapa, who was recruited in place of her husband said that she had stepped into her husband`s shoes only to fulfil his dreams.</p>

<p>Praising the support she is getting from her family, the mother of a five-year-old son said, "The entire family is proud of me and I am proud of the Assam Rifles".The soldier said that her husband died in an accident when he was on leave and she would try to fulfil all his dream as a soldier.</p>

<p>She also said that she was managing both the role as a mother and a soldier with ease and support from her family.</p>

<p>Another Rifle Woman Gayatri Sharma, who had joined the force one and half years ago, said that she was recruited in the force in place of her father who attained martyrdom in 2001.</p>

<p>The soldier said that she lost her father, who too was an Assam Rifles Jawan when she was just three-years-old. "I got a letter from Assam Rifles to join the force. I will perform my duty with full dedication for my country just like my father," the Rifle Woman said.</p>

<p>Speaking about being selected as part of the Republic Day Contingent that she was feeling honoured. The Contingent will be led by Major Khusboo Kanwar. It consists of 144 members excluding two officers and two officers.</p>

<p>Terming the Contingent as special the officer said for the first time in the history a women Contingent of the paramilitary will be marching on the majestic Rajpath.</p>

<p>She said the women soldiers of the force were no less than their men counterparts. They were successfully performing their duties in counterinsurgency in many areas of the North East.&nbsp;</p>
