Singer R Kelly tells judge he fired two defence lawyers as trial looms

R Kelly was recently attacked by a fellow inmate in his jail cell.&nbsp;

The incident occurred at Metropolitan Correctional Center in Chicago, where the inmate started "punching" Kelly reportedly who was sitting on his bed.&nbsp;

R. Kelly’s Attorney Douglas C. Anton told Billboard, “It is unfortunately true. Another inmate that had an issue with lockdown, got upset and simply attacked Robert."

Arguing that he is not safe, the Attorney said, "He is not doing well. This even more reason why he needs to be released. They cannot protect him in the facility."

The prison had reportedly gone into lockdown as there were protesters.

Kelly, then 27, married Aaliyah, whose full name was Aaliyah Haughton, the following day. The marriage was annulled in 1995. Aaliyah died in a plane crash in the Bahamas in 2001.

Douglas Anton, a lawyer for Kelly, said after Wednesday's hearing that the bribery allegation was "ridiculous."

Anton added that Kelly was doing well in jail and was continuing to compose music.

"It's completely uplifting stuff," Anton said. "He's just a genius."

Kelly is scheduled to go to trial in Brooklyn in May 2020.
