Foreign Minister S Jaishankar, who is known for his sharp remarks on national and international issues, on Friday (February 17) hit out at billionaire investor George Soros over his comments on Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The 92-year-old American businessman had kicked off a row with his comments linking the controversy over Gautam Adani's business empire and PM Modi. Jaishankar said Soros was "old, rich opinionated person, sitting in New York" who still thinks that his views determine how the world should work.

"Essentially, Mr Soros at the Munich conference said that India is a democratic country. But he does not think that the prime minister of India is a democrat. A few years ago, in the same conference, when I was there, he actually accused us of planning to strip millions of Muslims of citizenship. That, of course. did not happen... it was a ridiculous suggestion," Jaishankar is heard saying in a video tweeted by news agency ANI while making a reference to the Citizenship Amendment Act, which was labelled by critics as an "anti-Muslim law".

"But you have to understand what this actually means. I could take a view that the individual in question - Mr Soros - is old, rich opinionated person, sitting in New York. He still thinks that his views should determine how the world works. Now, if I could only stop at old, rich and opinionated, I would put it away.... such people actually invest resources in shaping narratives," the Foreign Minister further said.

The comment by Soros at the Munich Conference has drawn strong rebuttal from the leaders of the ruling BJP in India. Union Minister Smriti Irani termed it as a "declaration to destroy India's democratic processes".

The PM said those who travel to Delhi for work can now come back to home in the evening after finishing their task. The PM said that rural 'haats' are being developed around the expressway where the local artisans can sell their articles.

He said the expressway will benefit the Sariska National Park, Keoladeo National Park, Ranthambore National Park as well as cities such as Jaipur and Ajmer.

Earlier, the PMO said Modi's emphasis on building excellent road infrastructure as an engine of growth, development and connectivity in "New India" is being realised by the construction of a number of ongoing world class expressways across the country.

The Delhi-Mumbai Expressway will be India's longest with a length of 1,386 km. It will reduce the travel distance between Delhi and Mumbai by 12 per cent, from 1,424 km to 1,242 km, while the travel time will be cut by 50 per cent, from the current 24 hours to 12 hours, it said.

The expressway will pass through Delhi, Haryana, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat and Maharashtra and connect major cities like Kota, Indore, Jaipur, Bhopal, Vadodara and Surat.

It will also serve 93 PM Gati Shakti Economic Nodes, 13 ports, eight major airports and as many multi-modal logistics parks (MMLPs) along with the new upcoming greenfield airports such as Jewar Airport, Navi Mumbai Airport and JNPT port.

It will have a catalytic impact in the developmental trajectory of all adjoining regions, thus contributing in a major way in the economic transformation of the country, the PMO said.

PM Modi inaugurates two new Mumbai Metro Lines, projects in Maharashtra

The Election Commission of India (ECI) on Wednesday announced the assembly poll dates for the northeastern states of Tripura, Nagaland and Meghalaya.

The state elections in Tripura will be held on February 16, while Nagaland and Meghalaya will vote on February 27. The counting of votes will begin on March 2, Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar said on Wednesday. All three states have 60 seats each.

While Tripura is currently ruled by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) runs the Nagaland government.

The National People's Party (NPP), the only political party from the northeast to have a national party recognition, runs the government in Meghalaya.

“There is no place for violence in a democracy, we are working towards a violence-free election,” Kumar said during the press briefing, adding that 228,000 voters were added to electoral rolls of these three states.

“We have asked the youth who are due to turn 18 years before the polling date so that we can add them with a welcome kit. As many as 10,000 youth have applied from these three States,” he added.

The announcement of the chief election commissioner paves the way for a tight election schedule for this year, in which nine states are headed for polls. This year is also significant for the ruling BJP, as it would give a sense of how people will vote for the all-important general elections in 2024, where the incumbent PM Modi is largely expected to retain power.

Addressing the concerns raised by some political parties regarding the efficiency and integrity of the electronic voting machines (EVMs), the CEC chief noted that the parties who have expressed doubts over the machines earlier had won elections through the same process.

Among the three states, Tripura will be closely watched as the BJP had in 2018 created history by defeating the Left, which had ruled the state for 25 years.

This time, the Congress and the Communist Party of India (Marxist) are expected to join hands to take on the saffron party in Tripura.

WATCH WION LIVE HERE:

'Pakistan has learned its lesson,' says PM Shehbaz Sharif, calls for 'serious' talks with Indian PM Modi

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that, in the last eight years, the face of Indian Railways has gone through a transition as he virtually flagged off the 8th Vande Bharat Express on Sunday, which will connect Telangana's Secunderabad and Andhra Pradesh's port city of Visakhapatnam.

As the launch took place on Army Day, PM Modi paid tributes to the retired and serving personnel. “Vande Bharat is a true replica of India which is coming out of the mentality of dependence and moving towards Atmanirbharta (self-reliance),” said the prime minister, before the train was flagged off.

The prime minister appreciated the speed at which the Vande Bharat trains are being launched across the country. PM Modi stated that Indian Railways was a 'picture of disappointment' eight years ago.

"Whenever there was any proposal for new infrastructure, there were excuses of budget constraints. But our government changed the face of the Indian Railways," stated the prime minister, as he gave examples of vista dome, heritage trains, etc.

Emphasising that the culture and heritage of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana will be connected by new trains, the prime minister said that Vande Bharat symbolises the capabilities and resolution of a new India.

Indian PM Modi holds first telephonic conversation with King Charles III

Earlier this year, in November, amid the Group of 20 (G20) major economies meeting in Indonesia, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky asked the leaders present to step and stop the Russian invasion of Kyiv.

It was then that he first mentioned his 10-point peace plan which Zelensky said would end the conflict, “justly and on the basis of the UN Charter and international law”. Since then the Ukrainian president has spoken about his plan with the United States President Joe Biden during his visit to Washington, last week.

Recently, he also sought help from Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during their call, for the implementation. This was preceded by Zelensky calling upon world leaders to hold a Global Peace Summit based on the plan.

Ukraine’s 10-point peace plan:

1. Radiation and nuclear safety, focusing on restoring security around Europe’s largest nuclear power plant, Zaporizhzhia in Ukraine, which is now Russian-occupied.

2. Food security, including protecting and ensuring Ukraine’s grain exports to the world’s poorest nations.

3. Energy security, with a focus on price restrictions on Russian energy resources, as well as aiding Ukraine with restoring its power infrastructure, half of which has been damaged by Russian attacks.

4. Release of all prisoners and deportees, including war prisoners and children deported to Russia.

5. Restoring Ukraine’s territorial integrity and Russia reaffirming it according to the UN Charter, which Zelenskyy said is “not up to negotiations”.

6. Withdrawal of Russian troops and the cessation of hostilities, the restoration of Ukraine’s state borders with Russia.

7. Justice, including the establishment of a special tribunal to prosecute Russian war crimes.

8. The prevention of ecocide, and the protection of the environment, with a focus on demining and restoring water treatment facilities.

9. Prevention of an escalation of conflict and building security architecture in the Euro-Atlantic space, including guarantees for Ukraine.

10. Confirmation of the war’s end, including a document signed by the involved parties.

What does the proposal miss?

A report by The i, a British national newspaper, said that while the analysts have called the list “maximalist” and unrealistic, it also offers better scope for negotiations moving forward. Notably, while Ukraine has emphasised on “territorial integrity”, it fails to mention Crimea, which was annexed by Russia in 2014.

Furthermore, while the Ukrainian president has previously shown interest in negotiations with his Russian counterpart, President Vladimir Putin, his officials have also reportedly called for his ouster. On December 25, Putin during his interview with state television, Rossiya 1 said, “We are ready to negotiate with everyone involved about acceptable solutions, but that is up to them - we are not the ones refusing to negotiate, they are.”

Subsequently, an advisor to the Ukrainian president, Mykhailo Podolyak took to Twitter and said, “Russia single-handedly attacked Ukraine and is killing citizens…Russia doesn't want negotiations, but tries to avoid responsibility.”

Notably, Kyiv also broke away from the tradition where both countries celebrate Christmas on January 7 as opposed to December 25, in line with the Russian Orthodox Church which follows the ancient Julian calendar.

Additionally, the Ukrainian president also called out Putin for speaking about negotiations and continuing to target and hit power stations, leaving millions without electricity and heat amidst freezing winter conditions.

Therefore, despite what the Russian president might have claimed for the second time, the evidence points to the contrary, who also in turn blamed Ukraine and its Western allies for the lack of talks, a stance which the West had rejected as Moscow's posturing as it continues to attack Kyiv.

In a recent interview with the Associated Press, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba, on Monday, said that Kyiv wants a peace summit within two months at the United Nations with Secretary-General Antonio Guterres as mediator. He also spoke about how Russia must face the consequences for its alleged war crimes before direct talks between Kyiv and Moscow.

Furthermore, Ukraine’s foreign minister also invited other countries’ participation in the potential peace talks citing the example of Turkey’s role in the grain agreement. Meanwhile, the UN has given a cautious response and said, “As the secretary-general has said many times in the past, he can only mediate if all parties want him to mediate,” said UN spokesperson Florencia Soto Nino-Martinez, on Monday.

How has Russia reacted to Ukraine’s 10-point peace plan?

Earlier this month, Russia had rejected Zelensky’s peace proposal and said that Ukraine needs to accept new territorial “realities”, said Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, which also included taking four Ukrainian regions (Donetsk, Luhansk, Zaporizhzhia and Kherson) under Moscow as its “new subjects”.

He also said that there is “no question” about Russia pulling out its troops from Ukraine by the end of this year. “They appeared as a result of referendums that took place in these territories. Without taking these new realities into account, no kind of progress is possible,” said Peskov.

Similarly, late Monday, Moscow’s Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, reiterated that the proposal of “demilitarisation and denazification of the territories controlled by the regime, the elimination of threats to Russia's security emanating from there, including our new lands, are well known to the enemy,”

He added, “The point is simple: Fulfil them for your own good. Otherwise, the issue will be decided by the Russian army,” as per the Russian news agency, TASS. Furthermore, while Washington has given Ukraine billions of dollars in military aid, the country has been cautious with its approach to Zelensky’s peace plan as well as the proposed summit.

Ukrainian President talks to Indian PM over the phone

Meanwhile, on Monday, the Ukrainian president and Indian PM spoke on the phone for the fourth time since the beginning of Russia’s “special military operation” in Ukraine, in February, earlier this year. Subsequently, Zelensky had also taken to Twitter and said that he spoke to PM Modi during which he wished for a successful G20 presidency.

Additionally, the Indian government also mentioned PM Modi’s main priorities for India's G20 Presidency which include giving a voice to the concerns of developing nations on issues like food and energy security.

While India has repeatedly been criticised by Western countries for its import of oil from Russia at a discounted price, New Delhi has defended its stance of putting its people first. Furthermore, India has also called for an immediate cessation of hostilities and violence in Russia-Ukraine but has not outright condemned the conflict but maintained that the crisis is solved through dialogue and diplomacy.

Russian President Vladimir Putin lauded Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s “independent foreign policy”, saying that he put the needs of his people above and defied the western sanctions by continuing to carry on trade with Moscow.

“He is one of those people who is capable of carrying out an independent foreign policy which serves the interests of its people. Despite all attempts to impose some kind of restrictions on India, he is like an ice-breaker and continues moving in the direction which the Indian state needs,” Putin said during a plenary session of the Valdai International Discussion Club in Moscow on Thursday, according to Sputnik news agency.

Calling Modi a “patriot”, Putin underscored the historical ties shared between India and Russia, saying, “India has come a long way from a British colony to an independent country. We have a special relationship with India. It has been underpinned by a close ally relationship of many decades."

"A lot has been under the leadership of PM Modi. He is a patriot. His idea of 'Make in India' matters both economic wise and in ethics. The future belongs to India. It can be proud of the fact that it is the largest democracy in the world."

The Russian leader also slammed the West, saying that the latter incited the Russia-Ukraine conflict and blamed the US for stoking a crisis over China’s sovereignty in Taiwan to enforce its global dominance.
