A historic free trade agreement between India and the European Union is set to sharply cut import duties on nearly all European goods coming to India, making many products more affordable for Indian consumers across sectors such as agriculture, food, and automobiles. The agreement is expected to save European exporters up to €4 billion annually in customs duties. Described as the biggest trade deal ever concluded by both sides, the agreement will bring down steep tariffs, currently ranging from 50 to 150 per cent, on items such as chocolate, wine, and cars to levels of zero to 20 per cent. The European Union and India appear closer than ever to concluding a free trade agreement that has been more than 15 years in the making, as European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen signalled renewed momentum during the World Economic Forum in Davos. Speaking on the EU’s efforts to rebalance global trade ties, von der Leyen described the negotiations as approaching a decisive stage. While stopping short of declaring victory, she suggested the deal could become one of the most far-reaching trade arrangements either side has pursued, potentially linking a combined consumer base of around two billion people and representing nearly one-quarter of global economic output. If finalised, the agreement would connect one of the world’s fastest-expanding large economies with one of its most influential trading blocs, at a time when supply chains are being redesigned amid geopolitical uncertainty. The implications would stretch far beyond tariff reductions, influencing investment flows, manufacturing strategies and technology cooperation. For Brussels, the deal fits squarely into its broader effort to reduce overdependence on China and strengthen economic ties with partners it considers reliable. For New Delhi, expanded access to the EU’s 27-member market—already its second-largest trading partner, would help boost exports and support India’s push to climb the global manufacturing ladder. Also Read: Fearing escalation, US treasury secretary urges Europe not to retaliate against Trump’s Greenland tariffs threat Negotiations on the India–EU free trade agreement began in 2007 but lost momentum for nearly a decade before being revived in 2022. Since their restart, talks have been paired with the India–EU Trade and Technology Council, which has helped address complex issues around digital rules, supply chains and emerging technologies, moving discussions well beyond traditional trade barriers. Geopolitical shifts have injected urgency into the process. The EU is accelerating efforts to diversify supply sources, while India is positioning itself as a key alternative hub in global production networks. Trade volumes already underscore the relationship’s importance. Goods trade reached €124 billion in 2023, and services trade—dominated by IT and digital offerings, is estimated at around €60 billion. Officials on both sides believe a comprehensive agreement could significantly expand these figures, particularly in sectors such as clean energy, pharmaceuticals, advanced manufacturing and digital services. Nonetheless, difficult issues remain unresolved. The EU continues to press India to lower tariffs on products such as cars, wine and spirits, areas New Delhi has long protected to safeguard domestic industries. India, for its part, is pushing for greater mobility for skilled professionals, an issue complicated by differing immigration rules across EU member states. Other sensitive topics include sustainability requirements, access to public procurement markets and regulatory alignment, all of which carry domestic political implications. Acknowledging these challenges, von der Leyen stressed that negotiations are not yet complete. Her upcoming visit to India is widely viewed as a critical moment. Diplomats expect the trip to help break deadlocks at the political level and provide negotiators with clearer mandates. The visit also precedes an India–EU leaders’ summit later this month, where both sides hope to showcase tangible progress, or even seal the deal. Should the agreement succeed, it would rank among the EU’s most consequential trade accords in recent years and mark a significant step in India’s deeper integration into global supply chains. Beyond boosting trade and investment, it would expand cooperation on technology and standards, while signalling a strategic alignment at a time when the global trading system is undergoing profound change.

Amid the prevailing row over Election Commission of India(ECI)'s special intensive revision (SIR) in West Bengal, TMC National General Secretary and MP, Abhishek Banerjee, on Monday (Jan 19) welcomed the Supreme Court's decision directing the Election Commission to display the names of the electors falling under the 'logical discrepancies' category in the ongoing SIR of the electoral rolls in West Bengal. The TMC MP dubbed the decision a defeat for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), saying that the apex court accepted the party's demand of publishing the names in the 'logical discrepancies' category. "There was a hearing in the Supreme Court regarding SIR, with AITC having filed the case. About 20 days ago, on December 31, we held a meeting with the Chief Election Commissioner. It was suggested that the list of logical discrepancies be published. If they had published the list, the truth would have become clear. We mentioned that BLA 2 of AITC would be present at the hearing venue, but ECI rejected it," Banerjee said, addressing a rally in West Bengal's Barasat. The controversy erupted after more than 1.2 crore names were flagged under the ‘logical discrepancy’ category on the ERONET portal, reigniting the row over the SIR exercise in the state. Banerjee expressed confidence in the party's victory in the upcoming assembly polls, stating that West Bengal is not Uttar Pradesh and Gujarat, and that the state never bowed before outsiders. Also Read: After Trump’s peace board invite, France says it's committed to UN charter

"Today BJP and PM Modi have been defeated in court; in the coming days, they will be defeated by votes. This is not Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, or Gujarat. This land has shown the way to the freedom movement and the Renaissance. We never bow our heads to outsiders. The people of Bengal do not know how to sell their spine or live in slavery," he said. Earlier in the day, a three-judge bench led by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant issued directions to the Election Commission while hearing pleas alleging procedural irregularities in the SIR exercise in West Bengal. The apex court noted that the ECI had issued notices to individuals classified under the ‘logical discrepancies’ category. To ensure that those affected are informed, the court directed that the names of such persons be displayed at Gram Panchayat Bhavans, Block Offices and Ward Offices.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday attacked the Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress government in West Bengal, accusing it of jeopardising the future of the state’s youth and facilitating infiltration to build its votebank. Speaking at a rally in Singur, PM Modi said that while thousands of modern PM SHRI schools are being set up across the country, the TMC is denying children in Bengal access to quality education, and hence a change in government is necessary to ensure better opportunities and secure the future of West Bengal’s youth. Prime Minister Modi also targeted the Mamata Banerjee government over infiltration and said it is facilitating infiltration to build its own votebank even if it hampers the national interest. He pointed out that the Trinamool government is not providing land to build a fence along the Bangladesh border, because of which illegals continue to infiltrate into India. The PM also said that the TMC helped the intruders in getting fake ID and Aadhaar cards.

‘Trinamool harming the interests of fishermen’
PM Modi said millions of families in Bengal depend on fishing for livelihood, and the sector has far greater export potential than currently realised. “The fishermen and women need government support and modern technology to unlock this potential. The Centre has created a digital platform to register fishermen nationwide so they can access welfare schemes. Other states are implementing it, but it has been stalled in Bengal,” he alleged. Despite repeated letters, the TMC government is not cooperating, depriving fishermen of benefits under schemes like the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana.
