We bring you a cautionary tale about the dangers that technology can pose. Most of us cannot imagine life without a smartphone. But did you know that these devices can cause a great deal of anxiety and stress? Watch this report to know more.

Why phone calls can cause anxiety

Fifty years ago, a revolution in communication began when Dr. Martin Cooper made the first-ever cell phone call on April 3, 1973. Today, we delve into the life and legacy of the man credited with inventing the cell phone, whose visionary work has transformed the way we live, work, and interact.

The father of the cellphone predicts we'll have devices embedded in our skin next

Experts say the next generation will have mobiles embedded under the skin of their ears. Will mobile phones be charged from touch? What is the future of mobiles? Molly Gambhir reports.

Augmented reality contact lenses could soon replace our phone screen

We've all had our parents tell us that these devices will be the death of us. Now, new research has provided proof that electronic devices like smartphones, computers, and tablets and the excessive blue light they emit can significantly speed up our ageing process.

PTI quotes Jadwiga Giebultowicz, the senior author of the study and a professor at Oregon State University, as saying "Excessive exposure to blue light from everyday devices, such as TVs, laptops, and phones, may have detrimental effects on a wide range of cells in our body, from skin and fat cells, to sensory neurons."

The research, which was published in the journal Frontiers in Aging, suggests that limiting excessive blue light exposure could be an effective anti-ageing tactic.

Giebultowicz claimed that this study is "the first to show that the levels of specific metabolites -- chemicals that are essential for cells to function correctly -- are altered in fruit flies exposed to blue light."

Explaining the methodology he said that researchers compared the amounts of metabolites in flies exposed to blue light for two weeks to those kept in full darkness to understand why high-energy blue light is responsible for accelerating ageing in fruit flies.

They found that the quantities of metabolites they examined in the cells of fly heads were significantly different after exposure to blue light. The researchers' observations support their earlier results that blue light speeds up ageing by suggesting that the cells are not functioning at their best, which may lead to premature cell death.

According to Giebultowicz, blue light may have adverse effects on humans because the signalling chemicals in flies' and humans' cells are the same.

Study proves right what our parents have been saying for years 'phones will be the death of us'

Hong Kong has seen a number of prominent media personalities and journalists getting arrested in the recent past. Media tycoon Jimmy Lai, the founder of Next Digital and Apple Daily newspaper, was one such personality who was charged under the new Beijing-backed legislation which many believed was designed to hurt press freedom. The ongoing case of Lai has now taken a fresh turn as he filed a legal action to stop the authorities from inspecting his mobile phones.

In the application presented to the Hong Kong authorities, the media tycoon said that the phones cannot be inspected on grounds of national security. Earlier, the court granted the National Security Department permission to go through all the contents of the two iPhones belonging to Lai.

The authorities raided the offices of Apply Daily newspaper in August 2020 and confiscated a lot of digital objects before arresting Lai. Lai and his lawyers have argued in their latest request that the phones contain 8,179 journalistic items which are considered ‘privileged information’.

“The national security law does not authorise rule-making that alters established substantive rights under the common law or in a statute by removing or reducing them,” the writ petition said.

Jimmy Lai moves court to stop police from accessing his phones

If you love to spend time in surfing or checking out different things on the phone regularly, it's time to rethink. Researchers have suggested that spending long hours on the phone can shorten the lifespan. The activity can damage the eyes and have an impact on other body processes too, media reports said citing experts at the Buck Institute for Research on Aging in California state of the US. The exposure of light on the eyes can disrupt the circadian rhythm and worsen chronic disease, the researchers said.

As eyes are constantly exposed to the world, their immune defenses are strong in comparison to other organs. When these defenses become overactive due to the heavy light exposure through the phone every day, it can disrupt internal body processes. This can also harm other organs.

In a release, Dr Pankaj Kapahi, professor and nutrition expert, Buck Institute, said, “Staring at computer and phone screens, and being exposed to light pollution well into the night are conditions very disturbing for circadian clocks. It messes up protection for the eye and that could have consequences beyond just the vision, damaging the rest of the body and the brain."

Every cell in the body usually operates on a circadian clock in one way or the other. This clock operates on 24-hour cycles. Light exposure can disrupt it, said Dr Brian Hodge, another researcher at the institute.

The experts found this after carrying out researches on fruit flies. In it, a group of flies were divided into two groups. One was given an unrestricted diet while the other was provided with only 10% of the protein offered to the other group. In the diet-restricted flies, the genes related to photoreceptors in the eye were activated the most, the researchers found.

In further research, it was also found that the flies, who were kept in the dark, lived longer lives than their peers. It showed that the impact on the circadian cycle can have negative results and decrease lifespan.

Believe it or not: More screen time on phone can shorten lifespan, say researchers

Do you check your phone the first thing when you wake up? Do you scroll your phone endlessly for hours? Is your screen time making you a procrastinator? You may have fallen prey to a phenomenon called 'doomscrolling'. If you think doomscrolling cannot affect you in any way, think again.

He admitted to watching the content twice. He also said his actions were something he was “not proud” of doing, as per media reports.

He seems to have also 'confessed' earlier and said he may have actually opened it by mistake on his phone, the reports said.

This comes as the allegations of watching pornography in the House of Commons were levelled against the MP by two female colleagues. They had also complained that he was looking at the adult content while sitting near them.

"Of course, it's embarrassing. And it's embarrassing for my wife and family, and so that's my main concern at the moment. I have a very supportive wife and I thank her for that," Parish told the BBC on Friday.

Some Amazon warehouse workers received a text message from the e-commerce retail giant that employees will be allowed to carry their mobile phones with them "until further notice". The same was confirmed by a spokesperson to local media.

Amazon delays 'no phone allowed' rule after deadly tornado crisis

Are you sad? Have an ice cream. Is your mood all bad? Eat a cake.

Many of us know the obvious connection between happy mood and some sweet stuff. These things really change our mood and give us a few moments of bliss before life decides to hit you again.

Nothing wrong to indulge sometimes. But a mammoth order of ice creams and cake did nothing to uplift an Australian man's mood because his son had spent more than 1000 dollars on it. In his words, 'steam was coming' out of his ears when he realised what his four-year-old boy had done.

Kris King, who lives in Sudney, gave his smartphone to his son Christian to keep him busy as he watched his daughter's football match.

"Something's on the way," said Christian to his dad who probably ignored it as child talk.

Minutes later King's wife got a call from UberEats driver about delivery. King family ordered food often so this probably didn't seem unusal until mom realised what her dear child had done.

Christian had spent USD 1139 to order cakes and ice-cream. The order was so long that Kris had to flick the screen 30 times to see the complete list.

On display in the UberEats delivery car was fine assortment of sweets.

Christian had ordered 99 cakes which included 'two of the tiramisu, two of the mushroom cake, the chocolate log' among others. These were his favorite cakes.

The boy wasn't choosing randomly while ordering.

In addition to this, he ordered multiple tubs of gelato ice-cream. These were 8-9 tubs of 1.5 litre ice cream.

Kris King works as a firefighter. His boy ordered the sweets on the address of the fire station where firefighters promptly put the sweets in fridge.

What was to be a huge hole in King's pocket turned out to be a close shave. After hearing what had happened. UberEats agreed to make a refund.

At least six people were killed after an Amazon warehouse collapsed in Edwardsville, Illinois. This has sparked concern among the staff members regarding phones being banned in the workplace. A total of 5 Amazon employees have said that they want access to information, including weather updates through their smartphones, reports Bloomberg.

Two of these employees work across the street from the building that collapsed.

One worker from the neighbouring facility said, "After these deaths, there is no way in hell I am relying on Amazon to keep me safe. If they institute the no cell phone policy, I am resigning."

The employees claim that phones can help them communicate with people and seek help in case of such emergencies.

Collapse at Amazon warehouse sparks debate on phone ban; employees say they will quit

Let’s talk about buying an iPhone for $1,000. Tim Cook, Apple’s chief executive, once compared this eye-popping price tag to buying a cup of coffee a day over a year. No big deal, right?

But financial advisers see this differently. By some estimates, an investment of $1,000 in a retirement account today would balloon to about $17,000 in 30 years.

In other words, $700 to $1,000 — the price range of modern smartphones — is a big purchase. Fewer than half of American adults have enough savings set aside to cover three months of emergency expenses, according to the Pew Research Center. Yet 1 in 5 people surveyed by financial website WalletHub thought a new phone was worth going into debt for.

Tech companies fairly argue that our smartphones are our most powerful tools for work and play and thus worth every penny. But they also play numbers games to downplay the costs of a new phone. Samsung, for example, has said the price of its new Galaxy phone is $200 — but that’s only if you trade in a year-old phone for credit toward the new one. The true price is $800.

So it’s worth looking at phone upgrades in a different light to weigh their financial impact. That can help us make well-considered decisions so that the move isn’t automatic.

The irony of Cook’s coffee analogy isn’t lost on Suze Orman, the financial adviser who once famously equated people’s coffee habits to “peeing $1 million down the drain.” The seemingly small amount of money that people mindlessly spend on java — and now phone upgrades — could be a path to poverty, she said.

“Do you need a new one every single year?” asked Orman, who hosts the “Women and Money” podcast. “Absolutely not. It’s just a ridiculous waste of money.”

Apple and Samsung didn’t immediately respond to requests for comment.

So what’s the true cost of a phone upgrade? Let’s look at the math.

Flipsy, a company that buys and sells used phones, published an analysis this year arguing that it’s smart to buy a new iPhone every year. Here was its breakdown:

— The iPhone 12 cost $799 last year. It’s now worth $460 if you trade it in to defray the cost of a new phone. The newest iPhones, the iPhone 13, also cost $799. So if you traded in your iPhone 12, the iPhone 13 would cost $339. At this rate, if you bought an iPhone every year for four years, including the original $799, the net total would be $1,816.

— If you waited three years for the iPhone 15, your iPhone 12’s trade-in value would diminish to about $200. Trade it in and the cost of the iPhone 13 would be $599. Add in the original $799 and your net cost over four years would be $1,398.

In summary, upgrading annually over three years costs $418 more, or roughly $12 a month, compared with upgrading every three years, Flipsy said.

Framed this way, it may sound like a bargain to get a new phone every year as opposed to every few years. But plugging these numbers into a financial calculator tells a different story.

If you put $12 a month into a retirement account, like a Roth IRA that has an average annual rate of return of 10%, that amount would turn into $25,161 over 30 years, according to Orman’s savings calculator.

Orman compared the trade-in dilemma to buying cars. Car manufacturers could argue that the diminishing trade-in value of your car should compel you to buy a new one regularly — but don’t fall for it.

“I love my car, and I don’t care that the value goes down,” she said. “Think of the 11 years I have saved money not having car payments, or trading it in and spending more money to get another car.”

So what about those cups of coffee? On average, we pay $3 a cup, so $1,000 could buy roughly 333 cups. But naturally, making your own coffee is much cheaper.

I plugged some numbers into a coffee calculator designed by Bone Fide Wealth, a financial planning service. A $16 bag of beans from Peet’s Coffee at Costco could brew about 41 cups of coffee for 39 cents each. So a $1,000 iPhone is worth about 2,500 cups of coffee. Not as compelling.

Doug Boneparth, the president of Bone Fide Wealth, made a counterpoint. For people who have plenty of cash and are aware of the effects of their spending, splurging on new phones could be inconsequential to their overall savings goals compared with bigger expenses like housing — and if phones make them happy, go for it. He said he sets aside cash every year to buy a new iPhone as a sort of hobby.

“Personal finance is quite personal,” Boneparth said.

But he acknowledged that even his hobby was beginning to have diminishing returns because new phones weren’t getting much better technologically every year. “The 13 is the first one where I’m like, ‘This one literally only has a better camera,’” he said of the latest iPhone.

Orman cautioned that for most people who didn’t have as much money in the bank, especially those in debt, the effects of a phone upgrade could snowball. A $1,000 phone charged to a credit card could turn into $3,000 with interest by the time it’s paid off, she said. More debt could also affect your credit score, making it harder to buy or rent a home.

“If you think a phone is worth going into debt for, then, oh my God, you’ve now just set yourself up for always being in debt,” she said. “The truth of the matter is there’s nothing other than a medical expense worth going into debt for.”

What's the toughest substance on Earth? Diamond? Vibranium? Apparently, the answer is Nokia 3310. True fans are gushing over the iconic, NOT smart but super nostalgic phone completing 21 years of its release.

Nokia 3310 was released in September 2000. The phone had a black and white display, memory enough to save just 8 dialled calls in call records and absolutely no capabilities smartphones today offer us.

But it was tough! The body appeared unbreakable as the phone showed no signs of discomfort after a nasty fall. Some users would still remember miracle tales of Nokia 3310 surviving a fall from second storey of a building!

Social media is expectedly abuzz with posts recalling the good-ol-days filled with appreciation of the yesteryear tech piece.

Another thing the phone was loved for was its battery life! Today when we metally celebrate when our smartphone battery lasts for a whole day, Nokia 3310 gave you enough juice to comfortably last two days (and more!)

So much was the love for the old gizmo that Nokia even launched a 4G version of Nokia 3310 couple years ago. But the new phone, though eliciting nostalgic reactions could not match the craze for the old one when it ruled the handset market.

A new bug has been discovered on Android phones. Setting a certain image as your phone’s wallpaper could cause it to keep crashing and freezing.

The bug went viral on social media over the weekend, The Verge reported. The image was shared by “Ice Universe” on Twitter, and since then, people have been testing the veracity of this claim on their phones. Turns out, it actually causes phones to crash, especially if you’re using a Samsung device.

According to “9to5Google”, restarting the phone isn’t enough. In fact, one needs to restart their phones in safe mode and then delete the file, which may or may not work.

Most tech experts suggest not to try this on phones. However, the bug doesn’t seem to affect all Android phones. For instance, “Android Authority” attempted to replicate the bug on a Huawei handset, but it wasn’t affected.

Most users who tried to play with the image ended up formatting their phones, ie, restoring it to factory settings, which could put all your data in jeopardy, especially in the absence of backups.

Experts suggest that this may be due to the variation in colour space used in the image, which may not be supported by many phones. For clarity - the image uses the RGB colour space, opposed to the Android preferred SRGB.

Just earlier this year, a similar visual bug serenaded iPhones, whereby certain Sindhi characters caused phones to crash. In a series of bizarre mass-crashes, a five-second long video caused many iPhones to crash a few years ago.

Many developers have submitted patches to fix the issue. A tech professional from “Android Authority” claimed that Pixel 4 XL did not crash after the image was used as its wallpaper, but instead opened up space to replace the unsupported colour code, implying there might be a fairly simple solution to this bug.

Asian city-state Singapore is well known for its strict rules: fines can be doled out for everything from feeding birds to forgetting to flush a public toilet.

But this week Singapore police had to clarify that using a phone while crossing the road was not illegal after rumours circulated online that doing so could result in a S$1,000 ($733) fine under revised rules.

"There is a message circulating online which claims erroneously that pedestrians who use their mobile phones while crossing the roads may be fined up to $1,000 from December 1, 2019. This is false," Singapore police said in a statement on Facebook".

"However, we advise pedestrians to avoid using such devices when crossing the road, as such usage would distract them from the road conditions and the movement of vehicles around them."

All major domestic media outlets including broadcaster Channel NewsAsia and The Straits Times newspaper carried the police clarification.

But some people said such a law would be a good idea.

"Please make this an offence, simply because people who do this have no regards for other people's safety, and many a time at the traffic lights vehicles have to wait for them to finish crossing even when the lights are not in their favour," reader Alan Kiong commented on the Straits Times' Facebook page.

"Time to look into the matter. No to zombie world," said another Facebook user, I'sha Md Eusuff.

People in Singapore spend more than 12 hours a day on gadgets such as mobile phones, tablets, computers and video game consoles, according to a 2017 study by consultancy Ernst & Young.

Qualcomm Inc said in a court hearing on Friday that Apple Inc is $7 billion behind in patent royalty payments to the mobile chip firm, which for years supplied parts for the iPhone.

Apple and Qualcomm are involved in a series legal actions. Apple has accused Qualcomm of unfair patent licensing practices. Qualcomm, the world's largest mobile phone chip supplier, has in turn accused Apple of patent infringement.

Qualcomm made its comments about the size of Apple's unpaid royalties in a hearing in one of the cases in federal court in San Diego. Apple has disputed the amount of royalties that it owes to Qualcomm.

Apple has argued that Qualcomm is forcing it to pay for the same patents twice, once when Apple uses Qualcomm's chip in iPhones and then again through patent royalties. Qualcomm has argued that its practices are legal and that Apple is seeking to destroy Qualcomm's business model after agreeing to it for years.

Samsung's highly anticipated Galaxy S9 and S9+ were officially unveiled at a crowded press gathering in Barcelona ahead of Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2018, on Sunday.

The phones will come in different colors such as - Midnight Black, Coral Blue, Lilac Purple, and Titanium Grey colours.

Samsung Galaxy S9 is launched at a price of US $ 799 (Rs 51,700) and the Galaxy S9+ is priced at US $ 949 (Rs 61,400). The pre-orders for the Samsung Galaxy S9 start from March 2 and it will be available in the markets starting March 16.

The biggest change expected in the S9+ model is a vertically-oriented dual camera setup with the fingerprint reader positioned directly underneath which is capable of shooting at f/2.4 when there's ample light but can switch to f/1.5 when the phone detects low-light conditions. Samsung says this enables the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ to capture 28 percent more light compared to the Galaxy S8, adding that a new multi-frame noise reduction feature results in up to 30 percent less noise compared to the previous flagship.

Another new feature of the phone includes a super slow-mo camera which is capable of recording 960 frames per second, which means 0.2 seconds of footage is stretched out to 6 seconds.

Samsung has also introduced Bixby Vision in the camera app that will now offer live translation features, the ability to recognise the buildings and other places in a frame, and even look at the food in your frame and provide information like the amount of calories in the item, a feature that will be available only in select regions.

It has also introducing AR Emoji - a virtual avatar that allows you to click a 3D picture of yourself and turn it into customised emoji. It comes with 18 different emojis that can then be used through the keyboard app on the Galaxy S9/ Galaxy S9+ in any app and be shared with other users irrespective of the phone they are using.

Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ will also be powered by the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 processor, though the international variant, which is the one that India also gets, will have Samsung's own Exynos 9810 processor.

The Samsung Galaxy S9 features a 5.8-inch QHD+ Curved Super AMOLED 18:5.9 display Infinity displays with an 18:9 aspect ratio. The standard S9 would pack 4GB RAM, a 3000mAh battery, and a single 12-megapixel camera on the back.

The Galaxy S9+ would offer 6GB RAM, a 6.2-inch QHD+ Curved Super AMOLED 18:5.9 display, a dual camera setup on the back, and a 3500mAh battery pack.

Both the phones will have an 8MP shooter on the front.
