Pete Hegseth dismisses questions over firing of General C Q Brown

US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said on Wednesday (February 12) that a return to Ukraine's pre-2014 borders was unrealistic and the Trump administration does not see NATO membership for Kyiv as part of a solution to the war triggered by Russia's invasion.
Speaking at a meeting of Ukraine's military allies at NATO headquarters in Brussels, Hegseth delivered the clearest and bluntest public statement so far on the new US administration's approach to the nearly three-year-old war.
He also told Washington's NATO allies that they would have to step up and assume greater responsibility for Europe's security.
"We want, like you, a sovereign and prosperous Ukraine. But we must start by recognizing that returning to Ukraine’s pre-2014 borders is an unrealistic objective," Hegseth told the meeting of more than 40 countries allied to Ukraine.
"Chasing this illusionary goal will only prolong the war and cause more suffering," he added.
Russia annexed the Black Sea peninsula of Crimea from Ukraine in March 2014 and then backed pro-Russian separatists in an armed insurgency against Kyiv's forces in the eastern Donbas region of Ukraine.
Moscow currently controls about 20 per cent of Ukraine's territory, mainly in the east and south.
Hegseth said any durable peace must include "robust security guarantees to ensure that the war will not begin again."
But, he said, "the United States does not believe that NATO membership for Ukraine is a realistic outcome of a negotiated settlement."
Instead, security guarantees should be backed by "capable European and non-European troops," the Pentagon chief said.
"If these troops are deployed as peacekeepers to Ukraine at any point, they should be deployed as part of a non-NATO mission and they should not be covered under Article 5," he said, referring to the alliance's mutual defense clause.

Who is Pete Hegseth? Ex-Fox News anchor, soldier-turned US Secretary of Defence

Ahead of Donald Trump's presidential inauguration, the Senate has begun confirmation hearings for his cabinet nominees.
President-elect Donald Trump's pick for defense secretary is facing Senators for his confirmation hearing, being grilled over allegations of misconduct. Let's listen in

Pete Hegseth Faces Multiple Allegations Of Misconduct

US President-elect Donald Trump’s pick for defence secretary, Pete Hegseth, was told during the Senate confirmation hearing Tuesday (Jan 14) that he was ‘incompetent’ for the job. The much-anticipated hearing is underway to assess whether the controversial former Fox News host is fit to lead the defence department.
Hegseth’s nomination had earlier drawn criticism for his past statements and actions, including allegations of sexual assault, drinking, and offensive views about women in combat roles in the military.

During the hearing, Republican Senator Roger Wicker, who is the chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, noted, “Mr Hegseth has admitted to falling short as we all do from time to time." However, he added Hegseth “will excel in a skill in which many of his predecessors have fallen short.”
On the other hand, Jack Reed, the top Democrat on the committee, opposed Hegseth’s nomination and said, "I do not believe that you are qualified to meet the overwhelming demands of this job.” "Unfortunately, you lack the character and composure and competence to hold the position of defence," he added.

Protestors disrupt Hegseth's opening remarks

As Hegseth started delivering his opening remarks, he was interrupted by three protesters, all of whom were arrested. One of the protestors called Hegseth "Christian Zionist", before a second protestor emerged and started sloganeering over "bombing babies in Gaza".
In his opening statement, Hegseth explained why he thought Trump had picked him for the role of defence secretary.
"The primary charge he gave me was to bring the warrior culture back to the department of defence," he said.
"He, like me, wants a Pentagon laser-focused on lethality, meritocracy, warfare, fighting, accountability and readiness to stop bombing that night in our homeland," Hegseth argued.

Trump team rejects report claiming he will ban transgenders from military: Report

Donald Trump is reportedly preparing to sign an executive order that would bar transgender individuals from serving in the military, potentially as early as his first day back in office.

Donald Trump is reportedly preparing to sign an executive order that would bar transgender individuals from serving in the military, potentially as early as his first day back in office. The order, expected to follow his inauguration on 20 January, would also result in the medical discharge of thousands of currently serving transgender personnel. As per a report by The Sunday Times, defence sources estimate that approximately 15,000 transgender service members could be medically discharged, effectively deeming them unfit for military duty. This comes as Trump continues to criticise what he calls “woke” policies in the armed forces, claiming some senior officers prioritise diversity and inclusion over military readiness. Also read: 'Israel, Lebanon on verge of ceasefire deal to end Israel-Hezbollah conflict' A source cited by the report said that transgender people will be "forced out at a time when the military can’t recruit enough people.” They added that only the Marine Corps is meeting recruitment targets and warned that some of the ones likely to be affected hold senior roles. The report follows Trump’s nomination of Pete Hegseth, a former major in the US National Guard and Fox News host, as his defence secretary. Hegseth has been outspoken in his criticism of what he terms “weak” leadership in the military. In his recent book, he called for “housecleaning” within the ranks and called the medical care provided to transgender personnel an unnecessary expense for the Pentagon. This would not be Trump’s first move against transgender individuals in the military. During his first term, he declared that transgender people would no longer be allowed to serve, citing “tremendous medical costs and disruption.” That policy, announced by Trump in 2017, came into effect in 2019 before being reversed by President Joe Biden. Biden’s reversal allowed transgender individuals to serve once more, but Trump is now expected to not only reinstate the ban but go further by discharging those currently serving. A woman based in the US state of California alleged that US President-elect Donald Trump's cabinet pick for Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth blocked her from leaving a hotel room before sexually assaulting her, CNN reported citing a police report. She even "remebered saying 'no' a lot".

The woman was only identified as "Jane Doe" in the 22-page long report released by the city attorney’s office of Monterey, California on Wednesday (Nov 20).

The alleged assault took place after a Republican women's conference at the Hyatt Hotel in Monterey, California, on October 8, 2017.

The report further highlighted some alleged details of the incident, stating how Hegseth was "very intoxicated" and was "giving off a creeper vibe".

However, Hegseth had repeatedly said that their encounter was consensual and he made sure the woman "was comfortable with what was going on between the two of them.”

As per the report, Doe’s next memory was getting back to her room where she got into bed with her husband.

Hegseth’s account said that Doe led him by the arm back to his hotel room, which surprised him because he initially had no intention of having sex with her, the report said, adding that he found it "odd" that Doe did not leave his room.

Hegseth, according to the report, “continuously asked Doe if she was okay because he did not want Doe to get in trouble.”

US President-elect Donald Trump's pick for Secretary of Defence, Pete Hegseth is in headlines and a topic of discussion on social media because of his chest tattoo, a Jerusalem cross.

The former Fox News host has many tattoos on his body.
