Steve Simon, the WTA's president, expressed "severe reservations" that Peng was "free, safe, and not subjected to intimidation."&nbsp;

"Some forces in the West are instigating a boycott against the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics," it added, referring to the February event which some rights groups want boycotted over China's human rights record.

Peng, a former world No. 1 doubles player, was unseen in public for nearly three weeks after she posted a message on social media in early November accusing China's former Vice-Premier Zhang Gaoli of forcing her into sex.

Neither Zhang, who retired in 2018, nor the government have commented on Peng's accusation and the topic has been blocked on China`s heavily censored internet.

The men's equivalent body, the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP), weighed in on Thursday saying Peng's situation raised serious concerns within and beyond the sport.

"The response to those concerns has so far fallen short. We again urge for a line of open direct communication between the player and the WTA in order to establish a clearer picture of her situation," said ATP Chairman Andrea Gaudenzi.

Peng, a three-time Olympian, did appear in mid-November at a dinner with friends and a children's tennis tournament in Beijing, photographs and videos published by Chinese state media and by the tournament's organisers showed.

And the International Olympic Committee (IOC) said it had held a second video call with the 35-year-old player on Wednesday following one late last month.

The IOC said it had offered her support, would stay in regular touch, and had agreed a personal meeting in January. She appeared to be "safe and well, given the difficult situation she is in", it added in its statement on Thursday.

BIGGER THINGS THAN TENNIS

Unconvinced, however, the U.S.-headquartered WTA wants further assurances of her wellbeing and an investigation before it returns to the lucrative Chinese market.

"While we now know where Peng is, I have serious doubts that she is free, safe, and not subject to censorship, coercion, and intimidation," chief executive Steve Simon said on Wednesday, suggesting she was pressured to retract her allegation.

Equality for women would suffer a setback if powerful people could suppress accusations of assault, he added. "I am also greatly concerned about the risks that all of our players and staff could face if we were to hold events in China in 2022."

Simon told CNN on Thursday that he had received an email from Peng but said he thought it was "100% orchestrated" and did not reflect her "true position."

From former women's greats Billie Jean King and Martina Navratilova to men's No. 1 Novak Djokovic, many in the tennis world applauded the WTA, which stands to lose hundreds of millions of dollars in TV and sponsorship revenue.&nbsp;

"Really strong stance. Far bigger things in the world than a game of tennis," said Australian player John Millman.

The WTA had been fast expanding into China, where local interest was fuelled when Li Na won the 2011 French Open.

He had climbed steadily from running an oil refinery to a succession of leadership posts along China’s fast-growing coast, avoiding the scandals and controversy that felled other, flashily ambitious politicians. He became known, if for anything, for his monotone impersonality. On entering China’s top leadership, he invited people to search for anything amiss in his behavior.

“Stern, low-key, taciturn,” summed up one of the few profiles of him in the Chinese media. His interests, Xinhua News Agency said, included books, chess and tennis.

Now the allegation from Peng Shuai, the professional tennis player, has cast Zhang’s private life under a blaze of international attention, making him a symbol of a political system that prizes secrecy and control over open accountability. The allegation raises questions about how far Chinese officials carry their declared ideals of clean-living integrity into their heavily guarded homes.

“Zhang epitomized the image of the bland apparatchik that the party has worked hard to cultivate,” said Jude Blanchette, a scholar at the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington.

Peng’s account — that Zhang coerced her into sex during a yearslong, on-off relationship — has not been corroborated. The Chinese authorities’ vigorous efforts to stifle any mention of the matter suggest there is little chance that Zhang will ever be called to public account, even if that might clear his name. Neither Peng nor Zhang have made any public comment since her post appeared.

“One would have to imagine, sadly, that in an opaque and patriarchal system of unchecked power these sorts of abuses are not uncommon,” Blanchette added.

When Peng, 35, posted her accusation on the popular social media platform Weibo on the night of Nov. 2, she took readers into the cosseted personal lives of the Communist Party’s elite.

In Peng’s post, addressed to Zhang, she said the two had met more than a decade earlier when her career was taking off and his was nearing its peak. At the time, she wrote, he was the Communist Party chief of Tianjin, a northern port city, and he told her his political position made it impossible for him to divorce his wife.

Earlier in Xi’s term, lurid reports about officials’ sexual misdeeds at times surfaced in state media, disclosures intended to signal that he was serious about purifying the party.

Xi’s priority now appears to be fending off any odor of scandal tainting the party’s top echelons. References to Peng’s account were nearly wiped off the internet inside China. A Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman, Zhao Lijian, suggested that the attention around Peng had become “malicious hype.” Official media have not shown or reported on Zhang since Peng went public; nor have they directly challenged her account.

The whereabouts of Peng, a former doubles world number one, became a matter of international concern nearly three weeks ago, after she alleged that former vice-premier Zhang Gaoli had sexually assaulted her. 
 
She appeared at a dinner with friends on Saturday and a children`s tennis tournament in Beijing on Sunday, photographs and videos published by Chinese state media journalists and by the tournament`s organisers show. But they have done little to quell concerns. 
 
"It was good to see Peng Shuai in recent videos, but they don`t alleviate or address the WTA`s concern about her well-being and ability to communicate without censorship or coercion," a WTA spokeswoman said in an e-mail.

China’s State Council Information office and foreign ministry did not immediately respond to requests for comment sent on Monday. 
 
France`s foreign minister called on Sunday for Chinese authorities to let Peng speak publicly. "I`m expecting only one thing: that she speaks," Jean-Yves Le Drian told LCI television, adding that there could be unspecified diplomatic consequences if China did not clear up the situation. His office did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the IOC`s statement. 
 
The United States and Britain have also called for China to provide proof of Peng`s whereabouts.Men`s singles world No.1 Novak Djokovic said it would be strange to hold tournaments in China unless the "horrific" situation was resolved.

The Chinese Foreign Ministry did not immediately respond to an email request on Monday for comment on the Amnesty statement.

"The IOC is entering dangerous waters. They should be extremely careful not to participate in any whitewash of possible human rights violations," said Amnesty`s China researcher Alkan Akad.

"In the past we have seen various similar cases where people had no option but to say what they had been told to," he said.

Akad said the video call was barely convincing and did little to alleviate fears over the player`s wellbeing, echoing the Women's Tennis Association (WTA) earlier on Monday.

Peng's whereabouts have been a mystery ever since she levelled sexual assault allegations on former Chinese vice premier Zhang Gaoli, who is also part of the country's ruling Communist Party's Standing Committee. Peng had taken to Chinese social media platform Weibo on November 02 to accuse Gaoli of 'forcing' her to have sex with him.

"I hope this is true, that she`s found, that she`s healthy, that everything is fine. Peng has been incommunicado since she accused a former ruling Chinese Communist Party (CCP) leader of pressuring her into a sexual relationship, Radio Free Asia reported.

She expressed these claims in a social media post on November 2, drawing concerns from Chinese feminist campaigners and international sports associations.

Following her claims, an email allegedly from Peng was broadcasted by Beijing's mouthpiece CGTN on November 17, saying Peng's allegations were "not true," and that she isn't "missing", Radio Free Asia reported.

The US-based Chinese Human Rights Defenders (CHRD) network, which compiles and translates reports from rights organizations in China, said the claims from CGTN are dubious.

"Peng Shuai's latest statement - released through state media - should not be taken at face value," CHRD research and advocacy coordinator William Nee said was quoted as saying by Radio Free Asia."

The Chinese government has a long history of arbitrarily detaining people involved in controversial cases, controlling their ability to speak freely, and making them give forced statements," added Nee.

"Until Peng Shuai is free, the burden of proof should be on the Chinese government to prove she is not detained," said Nee.

Meanwhile, Nee also urged the WTA, the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) and other Tennis stars including Naomi Osaka and Chris Evert to keep talking about Peng.

Earlier on November 16, Osaka, in a Twitter post, said that "Censorship is never OK at any cost, I hope Peng Shuai and her family are safe and OK. I'm in shock of the current situation and I`m sending love and light her way. #whereispengshuai.

One of China's biggest sports stars went missing after she alleged that a powerful Chinese politician sexually assaulted her. Shuai had claimed in a social media (Weibo) post on November 2 that China's former vice-premier Zhang Gaoli had "forced" her into sex during a long-term on-off relationship. Ever since she made the claims, she has not been seen or heard from publicly. Even&nbsp;her post was&nbsp;deleted about half an hour later.&nbsp;

In the aftermath, a letter has been posted on the Twitter handle of the Chinese state-affiliated media outlet CGTN, saying it was an email Peng had sent to WTA Chairman Steve Simon.&nbsp;

A part of the letter read: "Regarding the recent news released on the official website of the WTA, the content has not been confirmed or verified by myself and it was released without my consent"

"The news in that release, including the allegation of sexual assault, is not true. I’m not missing, nor I am unsafe. I’ve just been resting at home and everything is fine. Thank you again for caring about me," it added.&nbsp;
