Paul Pogba says he is ready to fight against racist abuse after the Manchester United star and his team-mate Marcus Rashford were <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/manchester-united-fans-will-back-paul-pogba-after-racist-abuse-solskjaer-245487">subjected to social media taunts</a> following their penalty misses.

Pogba was the target of racial slurs on Twitter when his penalty was saved by Wolves goalkeeper Rui Patricio in Monday's 1-1 draw.

Then United striker Rashford suffered racist abuse online after hitting the post with a penalty in Saturday's shock 2-1 defeat against Crystal Palace.

Chelsea striker Tammy Abraham and Reading's Yakou Meite were also recently targeted by social media trolled and World Cup winner Pogba has had enough.

The 26-year-old insists he will use the jibes as fuel to step up the fight against racists.

"My ancestors and my parents suffered for my generation to be free today, to work, to take the bus, to play football," Pogba wrote on his Instagram account on Sunday.&nbsp;

"Racist insults are ignorance and can only make me stronger and motivate me to fight for the next generation."

During the Palace match at Old Trafford, United fans unveiled a banner reading 'United against racism'.

Rashford had tweeted in support of Pogba after the Wolves games, saying: "Enough now, this needs to stop Twitter. Manchester United is a family. Paul Pogba is a huge part of that family. You attack him you attack us all."

United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer condemned both incidents involving his players.

"It's the same we spoke about before the weekend. It's unheard of and we need it to stop, it needs to stop," Solskjaer said.

"I'm just lost for words if it keeps going. We keep having all these campaigns 'No to Racism' and it keeps hiding behind fake identities. It's just crazy that we talk about this in 2019."

Pogba's message was accompanied by a photograph showing him holding his baby alongside portraits of his late father Fassou Antoine and civil rights activist Martin Luther King,

Twitter said on Wednesday that they will meet with United, Kick It Out (anti-discrimination organisation within football) and any other civil society stakeholders to discuss the problem.

Twitter claim to have already permanently suspended a series of accounts as a result of the racist posts.

Anti-discrimination campaigners Kick It Out have also called for action.

"The vile racist abuse on social media continued today. This problem will not go away and needs decisive action - that's what we'll be making clear to Twitter when we meet," Kick It Out said on Saturday.

"Without immediate and the strongest possible action, these cowardly acts will continue to grow."

Racist abuse 'only makes me stronger' says Paul Pogba

<a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/ole-gunnar-solskjaer-to-give-paul-pogba-another-chance-from-the-penalty-spot-245053">Ole Gunnar Solskjaer</a> expects&nbsp;Manchester&nbsp;United&nbsp;fans to rally around Paul Pogba after he <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/manchester-uniteds-solskjaer-urges-crackdown-on-online-abuse-245142">suffered racist abuse</a> on social media in the wake of his penalty miss against Wolves.

United&nbsp;supporters have promised to show their backing for Pogba when the France midfielder returns to Old Trafford for the Premier League meeting with Crystal Palace on Saturday.

Pogba took over penalty duties from Marcus Rashford at Molineux, but his kick was saved by Rui Patricio, forcing&nbsp;United&nbsp;to settle for a 1-1 draw.

Solskjaer added his voice to the clamour for social media companies to clamp down on racist outbursts but the&nbsp;United&nbsp;manager knows, despite some controversial moments off the field in his time with the club, Pogba is beloved by his own supporters.

"I expect it to happen, we can all see Paul was disappointed when he missed the penalty. He doesn't deserve this," Solskjaer told reporters.

"When you sign for Man&nbsp;United&nbsp;you become a Manc. Once a Manc, always a Manc. He gives his absolute everything for the club every week.

"I know people expect him to do absolutely everything on a football pitch.

"He's got so many qualities. We're seeing different qualities from Paul this year compared to last season and he's a leader in the group. I expect the fans to be behind him."

Those qualities have been evident in bursts during Pogba's time with&nbsp;United, although the World Cup winner has not always hit the dizzy heights of which he is capable.

Solskjaer believes a lot is expected of the midfielder, sometimes unreasonably.

"He expects a lot from himself as well," he said.

"We expect a lot from him but we know that we can't get Roy Keane, Veron, Scholes, Giggs and Cantona in one player. It's hard. He's a top, top player.

"We do expect a lot from our players and we have high hopes this season. Hopefully we can be consistent and challenge when we come to April and May and Paul plays a big part in that."

'Thick-skinned'

United&nbsp;have sought talks with Twitter chiefs in response to the threats and racist insults and, while Solskjaer believes Pogba will respond positively to the affair, he pointed out there is a limit to such resilience.

"You become thick-skinned playing football and being high profile, as our players are," he said.&nbsp;

"Apart from using common sense, sometimes you've just got to turn a blind eye to it. We know that these people are not the majority, it's a few select ones who hide behind a mask.

"When I spoke to Paul I didn't get the feeling that he struggled with it. He'd not been sat down reading a lot.

"Some, and I think Paul is one of them, get stronger from criticism. I enjoyed criticism but when it gets personal and when it gets to race then it's a different thing. There's a certain point, a limit."

The Pogba incident has brought the issue of racism in football back to the fore and the&nbsp;United&nbsp;manager confessed the sport had perhaps been complacent in believing the problem had been eradicated.

"Yeah I think so. And I am not going to go into politics but you can follow the world in politics and it's not too far. I am not going to go into that," he said.

Solskjaer has also tipped 18-year-old midfielder James Garner and winger Angel Gomes, also 18, to be the latest youngsters to break into the&nbsp;United&nbsp;first-team squad.

"When we get to September and October, the midweek games and cup competitions, we'll see Jimmy (Garner), definitely," he said.&nbsp;

"He's done really well in the reserves. And Angel, definitely more of him."

Manchester United fans will back Paul Pogba after racist abuse: Solskjaer

Manchester United manager <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/ole-gunnar-solskjaer-to-give-paul-pogba-another-chance-from-the-penalty-spot-245053">Ole Gunnar Solskjaer</a> said players need more protection from social media companies, describing racist abuse and death threats directed at them as "serious incidents."

United midfielder Paul Pogba was the target of online abuse after missing a penalty in Monday's 1-1 Premier League draw at Wolverhampton Wanderers, prompting the club to issue a strong statement condemning the views.

Chelsea manager Frank Lampard last week urged social media companies to take action after 21-year-old striker Tammy Abraham was targeted after the team's UEFA Super Cup loss to Liverpool.

"We need to protect individuals. When there's death threats and racism, it's serious allegations, serious incidents," Solskjaer told reporters on the eve of Saturday's clash with Crystal Palace.

"Sometimes you get annoyed, what can we do about it as Manchester United? We're not going to ban our players on social media, we have to spread the good word instead."

Solskjaer backed Frenchman Pogba to rise above the abuse and emerge stronger.

"Paul is fine, he's a strong character and it makes him stronger. I cannot believe we still sit here in 2019 taking about these instances," the Norwegian added.

"Social media is a place where people can hide behind fake identities. There's so many Ole Gunnar Solskjaers on social media that I know are not me.

"The authorities have got to do something about the ones who spread this hate. You feel sorry for them really -- they must have problems themselves."

Pogba will continue to share penalty duties with striker Marcus Rashford despite the miss against Wolves.

"I'm sure you're going to see Pogba score a penalty again for United. Let's see when we get the next one. We're practising penalties still," Solskjaer said.

"There's no fighting amongst them. We're disappointed that we didn't win the game, but the talk is always more difficult when you don't get a result."

United are holding talks with other clubs over the transfer of Chilean forward Alexis Sanchez, who played in a behind-closed-doors friendly with Sheffield United on Tuesday.

"There are still talks with some clubs but he played in that game and played well, he's working hard... let's see in September what's going to happen," Solskjaer added.

Manchester United's Solskjaer urges crackdown on online abuse

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has refused to name a Manchester United penalty taker despite the furore that followed Paul Pogba’s miss from the spot against Wolves on Monday that cost the Red Devils top spot in the Premier League.

The United manager was criticised after Pogba failed to convert a penalty for fourth time in a year for United, a week after Rashford continued his perfect penalty record by opening the scoring against Chelsea.

Rui Patricio saved from the French World Cup winner as the game ended 1-1, but despite facing criticism for a lack of leadership, a defiant Solskjaer said he will continue with a policy of having both Pogba and Rashford classed as designated penalty takers.

"I’m sure you're going to see Paul Pogba score a penalty for Man United again," said Solskjaer. "Let’s see when we get the next one.

"We're practising penalties and Marcus and Paul are still on them. Marcus or Paul will score the next one, I’m sure they will.

"We’re disappointed we didn't win the game but the talk is more difficult when you don't get a result.

"It's not that I've left it to the players, we've nominated two and throughout the season you'll have games where they are not playing and it's good to know they're there and trusted to take pens."

Pogba’s miss, however, had a far more sinister impact as he was targeted with racist abuse online after the match.

United have called for social media companies to do more to protect their users and Twitter have agreed to meet representatives of the club.

Former United defender and England women's manager Phil Neville called for players to boycott social media to make a stance against abuse.

Fake identities

Solskjaer repeated calls platforms to be policed more rigidly, but said he will not encourage his players to come off social media.

"Paul's fine, Paul's a strong character and it makes him stronger,” said Solskjaer.

"When you speak to him he's fine and I just cannot believe we're still here in 2019 talking about these instances.&nbsp;

"What can we do about it as Man United? We’re not going to ban our players on social media, we have to spread the good word, we can use it to spread good and have to stop those incidents."

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to give Paul Pogba another chance from the penalty spot

Manchester United were held 1-1 at Wolverhampton Wanderers and missed out on taking top spot in the Premier League on Monday as a sumptuous Ruben Neves strike cancelled out Anthony Martial's first-half goal and Paul Pogba missed a late penalty.

After a 4-0 home win over Chelsea on the opening day, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's team dominated the early exchanges and led after 27 minutes when Marcus Rashford slipped the ball in for Martial to score his 50th goal for the club in all competitions.

But Wolves, who beat the visitors in the league and FA Cup at Molineux last season, were transformed in the second half, rejuvenated by substitute Adama Traore on the wing.

In the 55th minute, a clever corner routine left Portuguese midfielder Neves free outside the area from where he hit a delightful curling strike over keeper David de Gea that went in off the underside of the bar, ramping up the raucous atmosphere.

The goal was confirmed after a VAR review into whether Joao Moutinho was offside when he received the ball back following a the short corner routine.

"It was fantastic," Wolves coach Nuno Espirito Santo said of Neves' strike. "In the first half we struggled so much, but it all changed in the second... I am proud of all the performance."

Pogba then missed a penalty awarded in the 67th minute after he tumbled in the area under Wolves captain Conor Coady's feet.

The Frenchman's spot kick, superbly saved by Rui Patricio, was his fourth missed penalty in the Premier League since the start of last season, raising questions as to why United's other designated penalty-taker Rashford did not step up instead.

"The two of them are confident penalty takers," Solskjaer said as he defended Pogba. "When there are two names there, it's the one who's most confident. Paul's scored so many before, so absolutely no problem at all."

Jubilant Neves

The result left United on four points from two games, while Wolves are still looking for their first win of the season, having picked up two points from two draws.

Goalscorer, Neves, however, was jubilant with another strong performance from the Midlands team against a leading side.

"I'm really happy for the goal and the result as we drew against a big team," he said.

After regaining their supremacy in possession, United had another glorious chance near the end but defender Luke Shaw shot straight at Patricio from the edge of the area, to the relief of the home fans in the 31,314 crowd.

A win would have taken United above early pacesetters Liverpool and Arsenal on goal difference.

But Solskjaer seemed content to have collected four points from the opening two games after most pundits had ruled out his team's chances of being title contenders this season.

"We are improving," said the Norwegian.

"In the first half, we dominated possession. In the second half, we knew they were going to come out like a house on fire... Then we took control again and could have won it."

As against Chelsea, United were far more solid at the back, led by 80 million pounds ($97.05 million) close-season signing Harry Maguire, the world's most expensive defender.

He is building a strong partnership with Victor Lindelof that may banish memories of the uncharacteristically shaky United defences of recent years.

Up front, they looked fast and fluent, with Rashford and Martial showing a good understanding and receiving excellent support from Jesse Lingard and pacy new signing Dan James.

United next host Crystal Palace in the league on Saturday while Wolves face a trip to Torino in a Europa League playoff first leg on Thursday before hosting Burnley on Sunday.

Manchester United held at Wolves after Neves strike, Pogba penalty miss

Manchester United said they "utterly condemn" the racist abuse their World Cup-winning midfielder Paul Pogba received after he <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/its-up-to-them-solskjaer-refuses-to-blame-paul-pogba-after-penalty-miss-244356">missed a penalty in the 1-1 draw</a> with Wolverhampton Wanderers on Monday.

The 26-year-old Frenchman has missed four penalties since the start of last season — the most by a Premier League player — while team-mate and fellow penalty-taker Marcus Rashford has converted all four of his attempts in that time.

Pogba was assailed on social media, becoming the third player in England to have received racist abuse in the past week due to missing a penalty.

United said they were "disgusted" by the abuse and "utterly condemn" it.

"The individuals who expressed these views do not represent the values of our great club and it is encouraging to see the vast majority of our fans condemn this on social media also," the club said in a statement.

"Manchester United has zero tolerance of any form of racism or discrimination and a long-standing commitment to campaigning against it through our #AllRedAllEqual initiative.

"We will work to identify the few involved in these incidents and take the strongest course of action available to us. We also encourage social media companies to take action in these cases."

Rashford tweeted his support for Pogba.

"Manchester United is a family. @paulpogba is a huge part of that family. You attack him you attack us all..." the England international said.

Chelsea's Tammy Abraham and Championship side Reading's Yakou Meite have suffered similar abuse in the past week.

Abraham missed the crucial penalty in the shootout loss to Liverpool in the Super Cup last Wednesday. The posts aimed at him were described as "abhorrent" by Chelsea and manager Frank Lampard said he was "disgusted".

Lampard also called for social media sites to do more to prevent players being abused while Abraham has said he wants to "silence the haters" with his performances on the pitch.

Chelsea banned a supporter for life in July for racially abusing Manchester City's Raheem Sterling.

Five others were excluded for periods of between one and two years for abusive language.

Ivory Coast international Meite missed a penalty in time added on for Reading on Sunday against Cardiff but his side had the match already wrapped up at 3-0.

Some of the tweets aimed at Pogba were later deleted while several accounts appeared to have been taken down.

Twitter's terms and conditions say it "takes action against behaviour that targets individuals with hateful conduct".

"Manchester United has zero tolerance of any form of racism or discrimination and a long-standing commitment to campaigning against it through our #AllRedAllEqual initiative. "We will work to identify the few involved in these incidents and take the strongest course of action available to us. We also encourage social media companies to take action in these cases." Rashford tweeted his support for Pogba.

Manchester United 'disgusted' by racist abuse of Paul Pogba

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer refused to blame Paul Pogba after the Manchester United star <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/manchester-united-held-at-wolves-after-neves-strike-pogba-penalty-miss-244296">missed a penalty in Monday's 1-1 draw</a> at Wolves after taking spot-kick duties from Marcus Rashford.

Pogba wasted a chance to give United their second successive Premier League win when his penalty was saved by Wolves keeper Rui Patricio.

It was the fourth missed penalty by Pogba since the start of last season. The France midfielder appeared to tell Rashford that he wanted to take it, even though his United team-mate had scored from the spot against Chelsea last weekend.

United manager Solskjaer said he allows both Pogba and Rashford to take spot kicks.

"The two of them are designated the penalty shooters and it's up to them there and then who feels 'this is mine'," he said.

"Sometimes players just feel they are confident enough to score. Paul has scored so many penalties for us and today Rui Patricio made a good save.

"The two of them have been very confident. I like players with confidence and the feeling that 'I can do this'."

Former United star Gary Neville called on Solskjaer to resolve the issue before his team's next penalty.

"They should decide in the dressing room who is the penalty taker - it's embarrassing," Neville told Sky Sports.

"This is a Manchester United penalty, this not a tombola, this is not under-fives on the school field.

"Rashford scored last week - take the penalty. But there wasn't a leader out there. Something wasn't right."

'Sloppy' United

Rashford revealed Pogba had said he wanted to take the kick and, publicly at least, the England striker had no problem with that.

"Paul wanted to take it, it's that simple. Everybody can miss a penalty. He's scored countless penalties for us so it's normal to miss one.

"I took one last week so for me it's no problem for him to take one this week.&nbsp;

"It's unfortunate he didn't score but it's not on him, it's as a team and we take it forward to the next game."

It was a disappointing result for United after they dominated the opening period, with Solskjaer admitting they lost their way in a "sloppy" second half.

"First half was a mature performance. Second half was a bit sloppy. We are improving. We are a young team who will learn, we learned on the pitch today," Solskjaer said.

"Wolves probably got the goal they deserve. I thought we took control again and could have won it.

"We get a penalty that normally would get us another two points, sometimes the keeper makes a good save."

Solskjaer also refused to rule out Chile forward Alexis Sanchez leaving United before the close of the European transfer window.

Sanchez has been linked with a move to Inter Milan and was missing from United's matchday squad at Molineux.

"Well, there's still a couple of weeks left of the transfer window and there is a chance," Solskjaer said.

"Some clubs have shown interest in Alexis, so we'll see what happens. I can't update you more than that.

"There are a few weeks for international transfers to go through but at the moment he's our player."

'It's up to them': Solskjaer refuses to blame Paul Pogba after penalty miss

After a close season in which he said he wanted to leave the club but ended up staying at Old Trafford, all eyes were on Paul Pogba as Manchester United began their Premier League campaign on Sunday.

Yet following a 4-0 home win over Chelsea, in which the French midfielder set up the third and fourth goals, manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was full of praise for the former Juventus star.

Pogba played in a three-man midfield operating in a relatively deep role where he was penned back by Chelsea in the first half and struggled at times with his passing.

But after the break, Pogba showed his quality with a superb through ball to Marcus Rashford to score the third and then led a counter-attack himself to set up Dan James for the fourth.

"He's a top, top lad and such a pro and loves playing football and when he gets onto that pitch or behind closed doors, he grows more here (at Old Trafford), he's a World Cup winner," said Solskjaer.

"He's come so far in his career and there's no point letting yourself down. He lost it a couple of times but that doesn't matter. Get on the ball and play," he said.

The Norwegian said that he had asked Pogba, rumoured to be heading to Real Madrid or Juventus during the close season, to play a clear defensive role alongside Scott McTominay and Andreas Pereira.

"Paul can do many many many jobs, he can do an attacking midfield job and today he's more of a link player and when you've got (Victor) Lindelof, (Harry) Maguire and David (de Gea) at the back, they can feed Paul the ball, so he'll get it in good positions.

"Paul can do everything a midfielder can. Today, he was asked to play that sitting role and in the first half I thought Chelsea pegged us too much back so he had to do loads of running.

"But we're fit and he's fit and that is a fantastic pass for the third goal and the run for the fourth, I just wanted him to go all the way," added Solskjaer.

Though pleased with the performances of new signings Harry Maguire, Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Dan James, Solskjaer still accepted his team remained far from the level he wants them to reach.

"This is a work in process, the boys have been excellent since July 1 and have been fit enough to implement what we wanted to," he said.

"This is just the start. The more we get to play with each other and show we're a team, we'll improve."

Solskjaer praises Paul Pogba after opening Manchester United triumph

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is expecting to name Paul Pogba in the line-up for the first game of the new Premier League campaign against Chelsea next weekend, despite the Frenchman's overtures to leave the club in the close season.

Pogba said in June that he could seek a new challenge after three years at United, while his agent told The Times last month that the 26-year-old intends to leave the club amid reports linking him to Juventus and Real Madrid.

However, with a transfer having not materialised the midfielder, who joined United from Juventus in 2016 for a then-world record fee of 89.3 million pounds, could be around Old Trafford for a little while longer.

"Paul will probably be back early next week in training. It's not an injury, just some pain. He's not injured but I wasn't going to risk anything this weekend," Solskjaer told a news conference after his side's penalty shootout win over AC Milan in Cardiff.

"He should be okay (for Chelsea). I would hope so, anyway. I wasn't expecting Paul (at the airport). I spoke to him after training and he didn't feel right."

Pogba has endured a turbulent time at United, notably falling out with Solskjaer's predecessor Jose Mourinho.

However, he may be convinced by the ambition shown by the club to improve on a disappointing sixth place finish in the Premier League last season, 32 points behind champions Manchester City.

Following the acquisitions of full back Aaron Wan-Bissaka from Crystal Palace and young winger Daniel James from Swansea City, United are close to sealing a record 80-million pound deal for Leicester City defender Harry Maguire.

"Hopefully, the last little details will be in place and we can announce something very soon," the Norwegian coach said of the England centre back.

"Let's get the details over the line but he's played a few games over the summer so we'll just have to assess him, if and when (he is available for the Chelsea match)."

Solskjaer also said that Ashley Young would be the new club captain, taking over from Antonio Valencia who left after 10 years in Manchester to join LDU Quito in his native Ecuador last month.

Solskjaer confident Pogba will still be at Manchester United for season start

Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba is a positive influence in the dressing room and must extend his stay at the club to help bring trophies back to Old Trafford, teammate Juan Mata said.

Pogba said last month that he could seek a new challenge after three years at United, while his agent recently told The Times that the 26-year-old intends to leave the club amid reports linking him to Juventus and Real Madrid.

However, Mata wants Pogba's future to include United winning "big trophies" in 2019-20 campaign, having failed to lift a major trophy since their Europa League triumph in May 2017.

"We all know Paul and he is a fantastic midfielder, and a very good guy, very positive, and a good influence for everyone," Spanish midfielder Mata told Sky Sports.

"As a teammate and a friend I would like him to stay and be happy because he is a very good player for us.

"We know we have to do better than last season. This club has won more trophies than any other club in England. We want to win big trophies again."

In Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's first full season as United manager, the club will be aiming to improve on last term's sixth-placed finish in the Premier League, when they ended up 32 points behind champions and local rivals Manchester City.

Mata agreed a contract extension at United last month, and fellow Spaniard, goalkeeper David de Gea, is also closing in on a new long-term deal, according to reports in the British media.

"David is the best or one of the best goalkeepers in the world, for sure," Mata said.

"He is one of my best friends, so I want him to stay. On a professional level, it will be great for us if he stays because he will give us many points over the next seasons."

Solskjaer dismisses Paul Pogba leaving Manchester United speculation as 'agents talking'

Paul Pogba has been included in Manchester United's squad for their pre-season tour despite the France star's apparent desire to leave the Premier League club.

It had been claimed Pogba might refuse to make the trip amid reports the midfielder is keen to force a move away from Old Trafford.

Real Madrid and Pogba's former club Juventus are both said to be interested in signing him and in June he said "now could be a good time to find a new challenge".

Pogba had missed United's training sessions this week with manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's permission.

But he was back at the training ground on Sunday and a squad announcement on United's website confirmed he will travel with the rest of Solskjaer's team as they head to Australia.

Pogba has struggled since returning to Old Trafford from Juventus in a club-record deal in 2016.

He was included in the PFA Team of the Year last season but his often-lethargic performances split opinion among supporters, while he reportedly had a major falling-out with former United boss Jose Mourinho.

Talking to The Times last week, Pogba's agent Mino Raiola said he had made the club aware he was looking to move the player on and offered no assurances that the 26-year-old would travel for the tour.

"Everyone knows the willingness of Paul to move on. We are in the process of that. Everyone knows what the feelings of Paul are," Raiola said.

Romelu Lukaku, another United player linked with a summer departure to Inter Milan, is included among the 28-man party, as are new signings Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Daniel James.

Solskjaer's side will take on Perth Glory and Leeds in Australia before continuing on for pre-season games in Singapore and China.

Alexis Sanchez, who limped out of Chile's Copa America third-place play-off defeat by Argentina on Saturday, is missing but would not have been included at this stage due to his international exertions.

Paul Pogba hints at move away from Manchester United

Solskjaer expects Paul Pogba to be Manchester United player next season

Manchester United's players did not respect the club or their fans during Sunday's 4-0 loss at Everton in the Premier League, midfielder Paul Pogba said.

The result at Goodison Park left United in sixth place with four games to go. It was their third loss in five league games and Pogba said it was a defeat they could have done without with a top-four spot and Champions League qualification at stake.

"The way we played and the performance of myself, of the team, of everyone, is disrespectful," Pogba said. "We didn't respect ourselves, the club or the fans.

"It's not good at all what we did. Losing a game is something really bad that we don't want to when we are in the race for the top four and losing 4-0 as well.

"Everything went wrong but the most important thing is the mentality that we put on the pitch, that has to change... What we did on the pitch is not respectful for the teammates, for the staff, for the people, for the kit man, for everyone."

United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer warned his players that they must show fight if they are to be a part of his close-season rebuild and he also apologised to fans after the heaviest loss of his short tenure.

Pogba said the only way the squad could apologise to the fans was to give them a reaction on the pitch in their upcoming games. United's next game is a derby when they host title challengers Manchester City on Wednesday.

"The fans want a reaction from the players and the only way to apologise to them is to give everything on the pitch," Pogba said. "Do our best, create chances, score goals, defend, work for the team.

"We can even lose games, but with a good performance and pride on the pitch. When you wear this shirt at this club... you have to work and respect the culture, the history of this club and give everything on the pitch.

"That's how we should apologise to the fans, just to give everything for us, for the club, for the shirt, for the teammates and for ourselves as well because it is us on the pitch and we cannot perform like we did."

Man United's performance at Everton was 'disrespectful', says Paul Pogba

Two Paul Pogba penalties earned lethargic Manchester United a 2-1 victory over West Ham United in the Premier League at Old Trafford on Saturday.

Having lost five of their previous six matches in all competitions, United looked short on confidence early on against West Ham, who had a goal ruled out in the 10th minute when Felipe Anderson was adjudged to be offside when finding the net.

That tight call went United's way, and soon after they were in front when Pogba hammered home a 19th-minute penalty, much to the relief of home crowd.

Even with the lead, United remained sluggish and did not muster another shot on target for the rest of the first half during which they saw less of the ball than their visitors.

The interval did little to rejuvenate United with Anderson's first goal in 14 league games drawing the visitors level just four minutes into the second period.

Michail Antonio twice went close to completing the turnaround for West Ham, but United stole all three points after Pogba again converted from the spot 10 minutes from time.

The win ensured United climbed above Arsenal into fifth place, two points behind Chelsea, while West Ham stayed 11th.

"They played better than us, it is fair to say, I don't think anyone will disagree," United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said. "We got away with it. Sometimes we have lost when we should have won, so over a season it evens itself out."

Marcus Rashford was not fit enough to start for United, with Solskjaer making five changes from the side beaten by Barcelona in the Champions League in midweek, but the reshuffle did little to lift United as the Hammers controlled the opening exchanges.

Anderson sent the visiting supporters into raptures after converting former United striker Javier Hernandez's knockdown, but the linesman's flag denied the Brazilian.

United, though, were gifted the opportunity to break the deadlock through Pogba after Robert Snodgrass fouled Juan Mata in the penalty area.

West Ham, still on top after the break, equalised through Anderson, who lost his marker Marcos Rojo to fire Manuel Lanzini's cross past De Gea.

Substitute Antonio hit the bar with a thunderous strike from distance and was then denied by a brilliant De Gea save.

That stop proved crucial as Anthony Martial then raced clear before being upended in the area, with Pogba stepping up to fire in his seventh successful penalty of the season.

"We deserved more," West Ham manager Manuel Pellegrini said. "It was a pleasure for me to see my team play like this against Manchester United in their own stadium."

Paul Pogba responds to Real Madrid transfer rumour

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is determined to keep Paul Pogba and Marcus Rashford at Old Trafford, saying the pair are vital to his plans of building a team "worthy of the history of the club".

While on international duty, United's record signing Pogba said it would be a "dream" to play for Zinedine Zidane's Real Madrid, while Rashford has been linked with a move to Barcelona in the British media.

"They are vital for our future," Solskjaer, who was named United's permanent manager on Thursday, told reporters.

"You have got loads of players who you can build a team around and those are two that you asked me about."

Since Solskjaer took over as United's caretaker in December, Pogba has enjoyed the more freedom and tactical flexibility to become one of the most influential players in the Premier League, recording eight goals and six assists.

Rashford, meanwhile, has become the Norwegian manager's first-choice striker and the 21-year-old has responded with eight goals in 18 appearances across all competitions.

When asked if the pair can realise their ambition at United, Solskjaer added: "I would believe so. That's our aim as a club, to be achieving what we have done in the past.

That is the expectations here.

"Of course, we are hoping to build a team strong enough (to be) worthy of the history of the club."

United's short-term target is to secure a Premier League top-four finish and qualification for the Champions League but Solskjaer wants the club to target the league title next season.

Club captain Antonio Valencia and Matteo Darmian could leave at the end of the campaign while United are linked with England wingers Jadon Sancho and Callum Hudson-Odoi, at Borussia Dortmund and Chelsea respectively, and Napoli centre back Kalidou Koulibaly.

United are expected to back Solskjaer with substantial funds to rebuild the squad but the Norwegian said he would not spend recklessly.

"People who know me know that I will use that in a good way," he said.

"You have got loads of players who you can build a team around and those are two that you asked me about." Since Solskjaer took over as United's caretaker in December, Pogba has enjoyed the more freedom and tactical flexibility to become one of the most influential players in the Premier League, recording eight goals and six assists. "Of course, we are hoping to build a team strong enough (to be) worthy of the history of the club." Real Madrid 'a dream club for every player', says Manchester United's Paul Pogba

Manchester United interim boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has restored the confidence and freedom they lacked towards the end of Jose Mourinho's tenure and the Norwegian deserves to take over full time, midfielder Paul Pogba has said.

Former United striker Solskjaer has rejuvenated the team since replacing the sacked Mourinho in December, helping them win 10 out of the 13 Premier League games since his appointment and reaching the Champions League quarter-finals.

"We want him to stay. The results have been great. I have a great relationship with him, he has a great relationship with the players," Pogba told Sky Sports.

"When a player is happy, he wants to keep being happy. Solskjaer deserves it. He knows the club, he knows everything about the club. He is a really happy coach that gave confidence back to the players.

"This gave us the freedom to play and enjoy football again because maybe we lost that with the results that we had before."

Despite winning the World Cup with France last year, Pogba struggled for form under Mourinho who benched him, but the 26-year-old is back to his best under Solskjaer with nine goals and seven assists in all competitions.

"Maybe we lost confidence, maybe things went wrong. A lot of talking outside that we weren't used to," Pogba said, reflecting on the final part of Mourinho's tenure.

"I don't like to talk about the past. I like to talk about the future because that's what matters. We're better now and the results have been brilliant."

United are fifth in the Premier League with 58 points from 30 matches and within three points of third-placed Tottenham Hotspur. They take on Barcelona in the last-eight of the Champions League next month.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer deserves Manchester United job after restoring confidence: Paul Pogba

Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer says that Paul Pogba is channelling his extrovert personality in the right way after toning down his off-field behaviour, ahead of his side's huge match with title-chasing Liverpool on Sunday.

Pogba has rediscovered his form since Solskjaer took charge at as United's interim manager in December following the sacking of Jose Mourinho.

Having endured a difficult first half the season, the France star has scored nine goals and provided six assists in his last 12 club appearances as United have shot into fourth with Premier League eight wins in nine and reached the FA Cup quarter-finals after convincingly beating Chelsea earlier this month.

"He is a leader in training, he is a leader in the dressing room," Solskjaer said ahead of Sunday's clash at Old Trafford.&nbsp;

"Players are allowed to be themselves. He spends a lot of energy being a leader on and off the pitch."

The midfielder has become as well-known for his colourful hairstyles and his social media posts as for his football skills during his time at Old Trafford.

"If you want the nice car, different haircut, it is not a problem. I can't do anything about my grey hair, but it is not a problem that you have whatever haircut you want," said Solskjaer.

"It has never been a problem with Paul. I remember when he was 16, he wanted to feel good. If you feel good, you will play well."

Pogba's social media use was a problem for Mourinho, who was reported to be unhappy that the midfielder broke United rules by filming an Instagram video in the training ground changing rooms to wish Jesse Lingard a happy birthday in December.

Distractions

That was shortly before the 3-1 defeat at Liverpool that cost the former Chelsea and Real Madrid manager his job.

Solskjaer believes it is important that players remain focused on their job, and do not have too many off-field distractions –- making what seemed to be a passing reference to the appearance of Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge at the Brit Awards at London's O2 Arena on Wednesday.

"Paul has always been a larger-than-life character. But you don't want to give anyone an excuse really, so of course, you don't go to the Brit awards this week," he said.

"We know leading up to the other game against Liverpool there were stories about players not being focused.

"It is not about that. We know they are focused, we know they are doing their best but he does help himself by toning it down a bit ... Knowing him, he wants to win, he wants to be the best."

Solskjaer is also keen to ensure victory over Liverpool in the Premier League on Sunday, not least to silence the many fans in his native Norway who support Jurgen Klopp's team, who are separated from leaders Manchester City by goal difference.

"There are loads of Liverpool fans back home and it has been like: every year is going to be their year. Then it gets to October and it's: 'Ok, next year'," he said.

"But now they are in the race so for them it is going to be an exciting finish to the league now they are in it.

"That is none of our concern. We just have to concentrate on ourselves.

"We are not thinking about doing anyone any favours, but I would think the whole of Manchester will be supporting us on Sunday!"

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer impressed by in-form Pogba's new-found maturity

All smiles at Man Utd: Here's how Solskjaer transformed Manchester United's fortunes

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer remains unbeaten 10 games into his caretaker reign of Manchester United as the rejuvenated Marcus Rashford and Paul Pogba combined to earn a 1-0 win at Leicester on Sunday to close in on the Premier League top four.

Rashford blasted home his sixth goal since Solskjaer took charge after taking an exquisite touch to control Pogba's lofted pass and United held out to move above Arsenal into fifth and within two points of fourth-placed Chelsea.

A 2-2 draw at home to Burnley in midweek is the only match Solskjaer has failed to win and much of that form is owed to the turnaround in both Rashford and Pogba's roles since Mourinho was sacked in December with United 11 points adrift of the top four.

Solskjaer again chose to leave Romelu Lukaku on the substitutes’ bench, with Rashford preferred as his centre-forward.

The England striker took just nine minutes to respond with the crucial goal, having already missed a good chance when he headed over when unmarked from Nemanja Matic's cross.

Rashford's confidence was clearly unaffected, as he took just four minutes to respond in style. Ricardo Pereira was the guilty party for Leicester with a dangerous ball that was intercepted by Pogba.

The Frenchman proceeded to display his deftness of his touch with a beautiful pass that was lofted over the Leicester backline for Rashford to run onto and he did the rest, taking a touch before drilling a low shot past a helpless Kasper Schmeichel.

"That pass by Paul Pogba is great and the control by Marcus better," added Solskjaer.&nbsp;

Leicester have now conceded in the first 11 minutes in each of their last five games.

"It's crazy. At the start we don't believe enough in our quality," said under-fire Leicester boss Claude Puel. "Afterwards we play with intent and we can hurt teams like United.

"It's a big disappointment because we found good quality in the second-half with a lot of chances to come back."

However, as is often the case on the road, United relied on goalkeeper David de Gea for all three points as a Leicester side that have often troubled the top six this season improved after half-time.

Twice the Spaniard stood tall to deny Jamie Vardy, but De Gea's best save came from Rachid Ghezzal's free-kick that arrowed towards the top corner.

"Leicester got in a few dangerous positions, David de Gea made a few great saves and blocks," said Solskjaer.

"We could have done better higher up the pitch in terms of defending but we deserved the three points I thought," he added.

A Ghezzal goal would have been rich vindication for Puel who was met with chants of "you don’t know what you’re doing" from his own fans for replacing James Maddison with the Algerian just after the hour mark.

Jonny Evans and Harry Maguire also failed to hit the target as the Foxes laid seige towards the United goal in search of an equaliser that never came to pile more pressure on the under-fire Puel.

His stock at Leicester remains on the slide but Solskjaer’s at Old Trafford continues to soar.

Marcus Rashford strike lifts Solskjaer's surging Manchester United into fifth

Manchester United are more willing and better prepared to attack opponents under caretaker manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer than Jose Mourinho, according to midfielder Paul Pogba.

The French World Cup winner's own return to form is in keeping with a rejuvenated United as a whole since the Norwegian replaced the sacked Mourinho last month.

Pogba, who was dropped by Mourinho for his final three Premier League games in charge, has scored four goals and provided four assists as Solskjaer has become the first United manager to win all of his first six games.

"The way we are playing we have more possession of the ball. We know more where to attack and where to go. We have more of a pattern of play and more of a structure," Pogba told Sky Sports News.

"That makes it easier for everyone. So I would not say it is only myself. Yes, I have scored a few goals and had a few assists but it is all the team."

Pogba was the provider for Marcus Rashford's winner in a 1-0 victory at Tottenham last weekend that allowed United to close to within six points of the Premier League top four, having been 11 points adrift when Mourinho departed on December 18.

However, United were also indebted to goalkeeper David de Gea, who made 11 second-half saves at Wembley.

"It was great for us. It was great to show we are coming back and getting closer to the top," Pogba said. "We needed points and we showed that we could beat a big team.

"I wouldn't say (we had) luck because you create your own luck. David did his job and I thank him for that."

Solskjaer has brought structure to Manchester United: Pogba

French midfielder <a href="http://www.wionews.com/search?q=Paul+Pogba">Paul Pogba</a> says <a href="http://www.wionews.com/search?q=Ole+Gunnar+Solskjaer">Ole Gunnar Solskjaer</a>'s arrival as interim manager at Manchester United has not only sparked his return to form but also put a smile back on his face.

The 26-year-old -- an integral figure in France's World Cup triumph last year -- has shown the sort of form that United paid a club record £89 million ($114.5 million) in 2016 since Solskjaer arrived last month to replace the sacked Jose Mourinho.

Pogba's relationship with the volatile Mourinho had been pretty much toxic all season -- having already degenerated in the previous campaign -- and he found himself relegated to the substitutes bench.&nbsp;

"Before the coach (Solskjaer) arrived I was in the shadows, on the bench, and I accepted that," he said after the impressive 1-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday.

"It is a pleasure to play again. Now I am always smiling."

Solskjaer, who The Sun reported on Tuesday is in pole position to get the job permanently as he has impressed the board and has the unaninmous support of the players, has won six from six since his arrival.

Pogba -- who had been linked with a move away if Mourinho had stayed -- says a lot of that can be put down to the fact Solskjaer knows the club inside out having played for them and then been on the coaching staff.

Pogba was at United in his first spell at the club in 2010 when he first encountered Solskjaer, who had moved on from playing to become reserve team coach.

"It's a pleasure to be reunited with him," said Pogba.

"I knew him from the academy and the reserves, when his nickname was 'Supersub'.

"He is doing a really good job. As a player he knew the mentality of this club. He has come back to help us and it is going very well."

Paul Pogba credits Ole Gunnar Solsjkaer for putting smile back on his face

Paul Pogba will be fit to return from injury for Manchester United's Premier League match at Tottenham this weekend, interim manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said on Thursday.

The France midfielder linked up late with his team-mates for a warm-weather training camp in Dubai this week after being injured in a challenge by Jonjo Shelvey during the 2-0 victory at Newcastle on January 2.

Pogba missed last Saturday's 2-0 FA Cup victory over Reading as a result of the knock, but trained well in the United Arab Emirates, according to Solskjaer.

"He looked OK towards the end, so he will be fit. He did have some problems but he came through last couple of sessions well, so he should be OK," the Norwegian said.

Solskjaer has made a perfect start as United's coach since replacing the sacked Jose Mourinho on December 19, winning each of his first five matches in charge.

The former United striker, who is on loan from Norwegian club Molde until the end of the season, has made clear since his return to Old Trafford he would love the manager's job on a permanent basis.

However, his opponent on Sunday, Tottenham head coach Mauricio Pochettino, is believed by many observers to be the likeliest person to get the United job.

Solskjaer praised the Argentinian and justified the reports.

"He has done a very good job. That speculation is there for a reason -– because he has done well -– but it's not my job to rate managers. My focus is on me and my team."

Tottenham test

The interim boss, though, has rejected the idea that this match represents his first serious challenge in charge of United, following wins over Cardiff, Huddersfield, Bournemouth, Newcastle and Reading.

"We've had tests. Newcastle away is a test and the first game was a test as to how everyone reacted. The first home game with the crowd is a test," he said.

"We are not going to get as many chances to attack against these as we had before so when we have the ball we have to be ready to play well with it and we have to use the whole pitch because Wembley is a decent size pitch as well," he added.

One of United's biggest test will be containing the threat of Tottenham striker Harry Kane, the joint-leading scorer in this season's Premier League, with 14 goals.

"He's not bad is he? He is a fantastic goal scorer and one of the best in the world, but I have got a couple that I'm happy to work with," Solskjaer said

"He is a top professional. Sure, whoever plays with him and trains with him can talk more about him, but from the outside he is a fantastic finisher," the 1999 treble winner said.

Solskjaer, meanwhile, revealed defender Marcos Rojo has returned to his native Argentina as he continues to recover from a leg injury that has kept him out for a month.

"He has gone back to Argentina for a while because of his injury. How long will he be out for? How long is a piece of rope? For him it was mentally important to go away and come back fresh again."

Paul Pogba will be fit to return from injury for Manchester United's Premier League match at Tottenham this weekend, interim manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said on Thursday.

My focus is on me and my team." Tottenham test The interim boss, though, has rejected the idea that this match represents his first serious challenge in charge of United, following wins over Cardiff, Huddersfield, Bournemouth, Newcastle and Reading. He is a fantastic goal scorer and one of the best in the world, but I have got a couple that I'm happy to work with," Solskjaer said "He is a top professional.

Paul Pogba returns as Solskjaer eyes Manchester United job boost over rival Pochettino

The re-born Paul Pogba scored twice, for the second time since Jose Mourinho's departure from the club, as Manchester United beat Bournemouth 4-1 to make it three wins in a row for caretaker boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

After emphatic wins over Cardiff City and Huddersfield Town, the manner of the victory was further evidence of the return of attacking football under Solskjaer and of the liberated way in which the players are performing.

None seem to be relishing their football again more than World Cup winner Pogba, who has netted four of the 12 goals that rejuvenated United have scored in the three matches since their former Norwegian striker took the reins.

It took Pogba just five minutes to strike for sixth-placed United, sliding the ball in at the back post after a wonderful piece of dribbling and a precise low cross from Marcus Rashford.

The Frenchman, who scored twice against Huddersfield Town on Boxing Day, then burst into the box to head home an Ander Herrera cross from deep to make it 2-0.

"It is different, we still won games with the old manager but it is just a different style of playing," said Pogba.

"We are more offensive and we are creating more chances and that is how we want to play. I always want to do more, but I want to play for the team and play simple."

Not only was Pogba appearing in more advanced positions but he looked back to his confident self on the ball, strutting while in possession and constantly looking to create.

There was real class about United's third, in the 45th minute, as Anthony Martial delivered a low cross with the outside of his boot and Rashford guided it home off the outside of his outstretched foot.

Bournemouth pulled a goal back in stoppage-time at the end of the first half though when David Brooks skipped around the United defence and placed a cross on the head of Nathan Ake who nodded past David De Gea.

Romelu Lukaku made it 4-1, two minutes after coming on as a 70th-minute substitute, latching on to a Pogba through ball and hooking the ball past the advancing Asmir Begovic.

Pogba was inches away from a hat-trick with a low drive from 20 yards out that struck the post.

The relaxed and positive mood was slightly undone by a wild lunge in the 79th minute from United defender Eric Bailly on Ryan Fraser, with the Ivorian rightly being shown a straight red card.

"In the first half we attacked the game with a high tempo and high energy but the response to their goal was great. We managed the game much better than against Huddersfield," said Solskjaer.

"We are still looking for a clean sheet - you can't switch off for one second in this league.

"It's a very very good performance, the crowd was enjoying it but now Newcastle, the next one, is a different kind of test."

Paul Pogba doubles again as Solskjaer extends perfect start

Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba has thanked Jose Mourinho for helping him "improve as a person" despite the breakdown of their relationship in the last few months leading up to the former manager's sacking on Tuesday.

Mourinho, who replaced Dutchman Louis van Gaal in 2016, won the Europa League and League Cup in his first campaign but his third season was dominated by media reports of a rift with Pogba while United laboured on the pitch playing dull soccer.

Pogba was stripped of vice-captaincy earlier this season and dropped for the final three league games of Mourinho's tenure, but the France international said that he had no hard feelings towards the Portuguese.

"We won trophies with Jose and I want to thank him for that. Not everything worked well, but (some) things went well," Pogba told the British media.

"He makes me improve, as a person as well, and that's it. That's the past, I want to thank him for that. I'm sure that is the same for all the players."

Pogba was immediately restored to the starting line-up under caretaker boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and produced two assists in Saturday's 5-1 Premier League thrashing of Cardiff City.

"The performance of the team was great and we are happy that the first game of the manager starts like this," Pogba added.

"It's important now to carry on like that. We cannot play like this and win with five goals and then the next game lose."

United, who are sixth in the standings with 29 points after 18 matches, host Huddersfield Town on Wednesday.
