Indian golfers Aditi Ashok (46) and Diksha Dagar (138) are set to participate in the Paris Olympics whereas Shubhankar Sharma (197) and Gaganjeet Bhullar (232) also have a strong chance of making it to the Games. While it will be a third appearance for Aditi at the Olympics which is also the most for an Indian, Diksha will be competing for the second time. For Sharma and Bhullar, it would be their maiden appearance at the Olympics. India’s best performance at the Olympics came from Aditi who finished fourth in the Tokyo Games 2020. The Olympic entries are sent by the Indian Golf Union. Qualification for the Olympics is determined by rankings, limited to 60 men’s and as many women’s players through the Official World Golf Rankings (OWGR). The top 15 players in the OWGR are eligible for the Olympics with a maximum limit of four golfers allowed from a single country. The Olympic Golf Rankings (OGR) after the top 15 players consists of up to two top eligible players per country, as long as it does not have at least two golfers in the top 15. Meanwhile, Sahith Theegala and Akshay Bhatia, the two Indian-Americans making waves on the PGA Tour, have both reached career-high rankings this week. Also read | LIV Golf gives up bid for world ranking points Theegala, who logged a second runner-up finish in 2024 and Bhatia, who won his second PGA Tour title and qualified for the Masters, are now ranked No 12 and No 33 respectively. However, neither Theegala nor Bhatia have the possibility of making an Olympic appearance since the top 15 in the world rankings have as many as eight Americans. In 11 starts, Theegala has been a runner-up at the season-opener the Sentry and at the RBC Heritage and was fifth at the WM Phoenix Open and tied-sixth at the Arnold Palmer Invitational. Bhatia, in his 12 starts, has won once at the Texas Open and been in top 20 as many as six times. He also missed cut four times. The top four Americans are Scottie Scheffler (1), Wyndham Clark (3), defending Olympic champion Xander Schauffele (5) and Patrick Cantlay (8). Two other Americans, Max Homa (9) and Brian Haran (10), are also ahead of Theegala, who is the seventh-best American in the world rankings. While only four players can enter the Olympic Games, provided they are in world’s top 15, only the US has four or more players in the list. All other countries can send a maximum of two players provided both are in the top 60 of the Olympic qualifiers. Meanwhile, in the women’s section, Aditi, despite a modest 2024 so far, stays in top 50. Diksha, who has been in solid form, has been in the top 10 thrice in five starts on the Ladies European Tour, and has also been tied-26 or better in her two starts on the Epson Tour. Diksha has also touched 138 in the women’s world rankings, her best so far. The next two Indian women are Pranavi Urs, playing her rookie season on LET, at 403 and amateur Avani Prashanth at 531. Among Indian men, Sharma, the lone Indian in top 200, has a best finish of tied-seventh at the Singapore Classic and tied-16 at the Dubai Desert Classic. Bhullar’s best in 2024 has been tied-43 in Oman on the Asian Tour, but he also won once at Chandigarh Open on the Indian Tour, for his second win in four months in India. The next best after Sharma and Bhullar are Veer Ahlawat at 380 and Karandeep Kochhar at 434.

Sport has been compromised and athletes have been let down by a "failed" anti-doping system, former Olympic champion Mack Horton said on Monday following revelations that 23 Chinese swimmers were cleared after failing drug tests before the Tokyo Games. The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) confirmed on Saturday that the swimmers tested positive for a banned drug but were cleared by a Chinese investigation that found the athletes were exposed to contamination.

WADA said it accepted China's finding and declined to appeal it, triggering outrage from leading swimmers and criticism from the U.S. Anti-doping Agency. Australian Horton, who refused to share a world championship podium with Chinese rival Sun Yang in an anti-doping protest, said news of the failed drug tests was "infuriating" for the entire sporting community.

"I feel for the deserving athletes who have missed out on life-changing medal opportunities due to a failed system," Horton, who won a freestyle gold at the 2016 Rio Olympics, said in comments published by the Sydney Morning Herald. "I feel for the deserving athletes at the centre of this episode. They are victim to a system which has disrespected sport in a bid to manipulate success."

Late on Sunday, WADA issued a statement saying it stood by its decision after viewing a documentary by German broadcaster ARD on the Chinese drug tests. "We are equally confident that WADA’s independent Intelligence and Investigations Department followed up on all allegations received, which were not corroborated by any evidence; and thus, did not meet (the) threshold to open an investigation," WADA said in the statement.

WADA called a press conference to address the issue later on Monday (1500 GMT). Elite swimmers, including Britain's triple Olympic champion Adam Peaty, criticised anti-doping authorities over the weekend and questioned why the failed tests were not made public.

However, veteran Australian coach Denis Cotterell defended China's swimming programme and said accusations the country was engaged in systemic doping were wide of the mark. "I am happy to say I’m absolutely in support of my swimmers and dispute any suggestion of anything orchestrated," said Cotterell, who is working with China's national swim team in the leadup to the Olympics.

He told the Sydney Morning Herald China was adamant about having clean sport. "I feel for the athletes here because of how hard they work now to eliminate the tag that was garnered in the '90s."

Chinese swimming was engulfed in several doping scandals during the 1990s, with multiple athletes failing drug tests before and during major championships. Cotterell said he understood if rival swimmers were upset and that the anti-doping process could have been better handled.

"It unfortunately allows that doubt to come out and to surface. I can’t prove anything, I just know the truth," he added. Media reports said the swimmers tested positive for trimetazidine (TMZ), which is found in heart medication, months before the Tokyo Games started in July, 2021.

Cotterell's former swimmer Sun, a triple Olympic champion, served a three-month doping ban in 2014 for taking trimetazidine, which he said he took to treat a heart condition. The ban was not made public until after it ended.

Sun, 32, is currently serving a four-year ban for a separate doping offence which is due to expire next month.

French President Emmanuel Macron has hinted that star footballer Kylian Mbappe might be on his way to Real Madrid at the end of the season. Macron made the revelation while answering questions related to Paris Olympics where he&nbsp;hoped that Mbappe's club would allow him to play for the French men's football team in the quadrennial event.&nbsp;

When asked if he was referring to Real Madrid as the particular club, Macron&nbsp;said with a wry smile: "Exactly, that’s what I meant.”

Notably, the participation of players in the Olympics depends on the policy of the respective clubs that the footballer plays for.&nbsp;

"We are going to do everything (to have a competitive team). I have confidence in the French and European clubs, if I may say so if you see what I mean. We have the Euro before, that's the problem. I think the clubs have to play their part if we want to have a great show," said Macron.&nbsp;

"I have not yet spoken to him [Mbappe] about that, but I hope that his club, in particular, allows it. And the other clubs too," he added.&nbsp;

The torch for the 2024 Paris Olympics was lit in ancient Olympia, the birthplace of the ancient Olympics, in a traditional ceremony on Tuesday (Apr 16). The torch for the 2024 Paris Olympics was lit in ancient Olympia, the birthplace of the ancient Olympics, in a traditional ceremony on Tuesday (Apr 16). The flame marks the final stretch of the preparations for the Games and will now begin its journey that culminates in the French capital when the fire cauldron at the Stade de France will be lit using the flame during the opening ceremony. The choreographed ceremony was inspired by the traditions and values of ancient Greece. Actresses dressed as ancient priestesses entered the stadium, accompanying the head priestess to the Temple of Hera where religious ceremonies were undertaken and the flame lit. Greek actress Mary Mina played the part of the head priestess and lit the torch using a backup flame instead of a parabolic mirror due to cloudy skies, for the start of a relay in Greece and France. "In these difficult times we are living through, with wars and conflicts on the rise, people are fed up with all the hate, the aggression and negative news they are facing day in and day out," International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Thomas Bach said in his speech. "We are longing for something which brings us together, something that is unifying, something that gives us hope. The Olympic flame that we are lighting today is the symbol of this hope." The ceremony took place a day after French President Emmanuel Macron said backup plans were in place to relocate the opening ceremony in case of increased terror threats. Rezayee has called on the IOC to ban Afghanistan due to the Taliban's horrid human rights record. She added that under such a ban, Afghan women should still be allowed to participate as part of the IOC refugee Olympic Team. "Given tonnes and tonnes of evidence about the Taliban, about their brutal treatment of women and children, they are very dangerous," Rezayee was quoted as saying by Reuters. Taliban has heavily curtailed the human rights of its citizens, especially young girls and women, ever since taking over the country in 2021 after American troops left the country. French President Emmanuel Macron has said the opening ceremony of the Paris 2024 Olympics would be moved if there is a serious risk of a terrorist attack, adding that backup plans were in place to deal with any such contingency.

French President Emmanuel Macron has said the opening ceremony of the Paris 2024 Olympics would be moved if there is a serious risk of a terrorist attack, adding that backup plans were in place to deal with any such contingency. In less than four months, Paris will be hosting the biggest sporting carnival on the planet with the opening ceremony taking place on the iconic Seine river. However, a recent upsurge in threats from terrorists has soured the anticipation surrounding the quadrennial event. “If we think there are risks, depending on our analysis of the context, we have fallback scenarios. There are plans B and C and we are preparing them in parallel," said Macron in a television interview on Monday (Apr 15). Notably, the organisers have planned a 'world first' opening ceremony, scheduled for July 26, when over 300,000 people are expected to watch an armada of boats carrying national teams down the river. “We’ll be analysing the situation in real-time and preparing a ceremony that would be limited to Trocadéro, where we wouldn’t use the whole of the Seine, or even a ceremony that would bring the public to the Stade de France, which is what has been done traditionally,” Macron said. “What the terrorists want is to prevent us from dreaming, and that’s their greatest victory," he added. Surfrider Foundation, a non-profit organization (NGO) based out of France, has warned the Paris Olympic 2024 organisers of poor water quality in the iconic Seine river. Notably, athletes will be required to swim in the river during Olympic and Paralympic triathlon and marathon swimming events. In less than four months, Paris will be hosting sports' biggest carnival but the report by NGO has raised a few concerns.

Surfrider shared a post on its official Facebook page which mentioned that bacteriological pollution at Alexandre III Bridge, starting point of several water events, is above the permissible limit. The NGO also warned of various health risks posed by the pollution which includes 'common infections such as otitis and conjunctivitis to more severe infections such as staphylococcus.'

The organisation&nbsp;says that the causes of pollution range from 'rainfall to malfunctions in the sewage system, including poorly connected barges and animal waste.'

The French government, however, has taken several steps to address these issues and the post by the NGO also acknowledged that and wrote: "Faced with these challenges, the City of Paris, the French State and Paris regional authorities have committed to take concrete measures, such as setting up a storm water basin at Austerlitz, connecting barges and limit impermeable surfaces."

Apart from this, rising temperatures are also raising a lot of questions over the games. The organisers are leaving no stone unturned to make sure the athletes have a fruitful time in the village. Despite no air conditioning at the athletes' village, organisers say that they have ensured that the comfort of the athletes is met in the forthcoming mega event.

Following the Games, around 6,000 people will reside in the neighbourhood, which comprises the suburban areas of Saint Ouen, Saint Denis and L'Ile Saint Denis.

It's a dream come true; I started my sports career at the age of six, and finally, we are there, India is there. Every Olympian has a dream of reaching here, and I will be the first woman to be there from my country,'' said Bilquis Mir, Water Sports Champion. Olympic gold medalist Neeraj Chopra has expressed shock over recent reports that his compatriot, Pakistan's Arshad Nadeem was struggling to acquire a new javelin to prepare for the upcoming competitions, including the Paris Olympics.&nbsp;

Chopra and Nadeem have been two of the brightest stars to come out of Asia in recent years in athletics. While&nbsp;Chopra won gold at the Tokyo Olympics, Nadeem secured the top spot at the 2022 Commonwealth Games with a 90.18-metre throw.&nbsp;

“It is hard to believe that he has been struggling to get a new javelin. Given his credentials, this should not be a big issue at all,” Chopra said to SAI Media on Monday (Mar 18).

“It can’t be that he (Nadeem) doesn’t have the means to buy a javelin. He is a champion and must be doing some brand endorsements. I reckon he has earned a bit of money too. But having said that, his government must look at Arshad’s (Nadeem) needs and support him just like how my government is doing,” Chopra added.

Unlike Nadeem, Chopra's entire training and international tours are funded by the central government's&nbsp;Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS).&nbsp;

On Monday (March 18), the Indian Olympic Association abolished the wrestling ad-hoc committee, stating that 'there is no more need' for it to govern the sport after the national federation's ban was lifted. Notably, the IOA also made it clear that the decision was made following the successful completion of the selection trials for next month's Olympic qualifying event, for which the panel worked closely with the WFI.

The IOA felt it was not necessary to monitor WFI's activities through an ad hoc committee after WFI's ban getting lifted by the world wrestling body and the selection trials also being conducted smoothly. This, in turn, is a&nbsp;significant move as it indicates the return of&nbsp;normalcy and stability for Indian wrestling, enabling the WFI to resume its operations under its regular governance structure.

It is to be noted that the ad hoc committee was formed in December last year after the sports ministry suspended the WFI&nbsp;after&nbsp;Sanjay Singh -- the then newly-elected chief&nbsp;-- announced, in December,&nbsp;that the U-15 and U-20 nationals would be held&nbsp;in Uttar Pradesh's&nbsp;Nandini Nagar, Gonda before the year end.

The Sports Ministry claimed the announcement was against the the rules and regulations as a 15-day notice is needed for&nbsp;the&nbsp;players to prepare. Hence, it&nbsp;criticised the hasty decision-making, questioning its functioning and integrity.

This led to constitution of the ad hoc committee -- chaired by Bhupender Singh Bajwa -- on December 23 following allegations that the newly elected WFI, led by Sanjay (who replaced Brij Bhushan Singh&nbsp;accused of sexual assault by young females), violated its own regulations.

"I mightn't be right, but I think that I've read something that it might be as little as 40," he added.

The Paris Olympics is just five months away. Ahead of the mega event, the French women's artistic gymnastics coach, Dimitru Pop, has been provisionally suspended amid an investigation into violence and abuse. The shocking development was confirmed by the French gymnastics federation's technical director, who informed&nbsp;Reuters about the same on Wednesday (March 7). Pop, however, remained unavailable for comment.

Notably, the investigation was started&nbsp;by the French sports ministry last May. "He has been suspended. At this stage, we have no comment to share. The Federation will answer all questions as part of the investigation," the French gymnastics federation's technical director Kevinn Rabaud, stated.

The women's team secured their qualification spot for the upcoming Paris 2024 Olympics last October when they clinched bronze in the world championships. Pop is one of three coaches of the women's team within the French federation. This is certainly a huge blow for the coach, as well as for the French women's team,&nbsp;before the showpiece event. It will be interesting to see what eventually comes out of the investigation. At present, a word from the Sports Ministry&nbsp;is also awaited.

World number four Daniil Medvedev said he was excited about competing at the Paris Olympics and will follow the rules as a neutral athlete after the sport's governing body announced its stance on players from Russia and Belarus on Wednesday. The International Tennis Federation (ITF) said players from the two countries could take part in the Paris Games as neutrals without flags, emblems or anthems. Russians and Belarusians were banned from competing internationally following Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022, for which Belarus has been used as a staging ground.

In March last year, however, the IOC issued a set of recommendations for international sports federations to allow competitors from these countries to return. Speaking before his Indian Wells opener on Friday, Russian Medvedev said he was looking forward to playing in the Olympics after a positive experience in Tokyo three years ago when he made the quarter-finals of the singles competition.

Paris Olympics 2024: India clubbed in Pool B alongside Belgium, Australia in men’s hockey

Five-time Olympic champion Laura Kenny's chances of being able to compete in the Paris Games this year are fading, according to British Cycling's Performance Director Stephen Park. The 31-year-old suffered a miscarriage in 2021, needed surgery following an ectopic pregnancy in 2022 and then gave birth to her second child last year. She has stated her ambition to ride in Paris but has not raced since the 2022 Commonwealth Games and her window of opportunity is closing. The 2024 Olympics will be held from July 26-Aug. 11.

"She has a slim chance of being in Paris," Park told reporters at a briefing in Manchester. "The situation with Laura is no different to the run-in to Glasgow (2023 world championships), which is the first challenge is for her to be in a position where she feels she is going to be competitive and therefore put her hand up to be selected for events that will allow her to get the UCI points she needs to qualify. "Then she has to qualify for the team by being competitive in a team that is more competitive than it's ever been. "Both of those are fairly significant hurdles."

Kenny, who is married to British sprint great Jason Kenny, would have to compete at the Nations Cup event in Milton, Canada next month to have any chance of gaining the required UCI points that would keep her in the frame for selection.

She is currently not training with the rest of the British team but following her own programme. "We have ongoing and continual dialogue with Laura and we are supporting her in terms of her return to training and she is still optimistic about the world championships (in Denmark in October)," Park said. Kenny was the dominant force in women's track endurance racing with team pursuit and omnium golds at London 2012 and Rio 2016. She also claimed a memorable gold at the delayed Tokyo Games in 2021 in the madison alongside Katie Archibald. She is also a seven-time world champion and 14-time European champion. One glimmer of hope could be that the sport's governing body the UCI allow her some slack. "She would need to go to Milton unless the UCI made some exemption, which there is the potential for as they seem to be keen to make exceptions for people," Park added.

Five-time Olympic champion Laura Kenny's chances of being able to compete in the Paris Games this year are fading, according to British Cycling's Performance Director Stephen Park.

"Both of those are fairly significant hurdles." Kenny, who is married to British sprint great Jason Kenny, would have to compete at the Nations Cup event in Milton, Canada next month to have any chance of gaining the required UCI points that would keep her in the frame for selection. Indian shuttler Sai Praneeth announced his retirement from the sport on Monday (March 4). Praneeth, a world championship bronze medallist, cited injury concerns and a 'demanding schedule' as two important factors for his sudden retirement ahead of the Paris Olympics which get&nbsp;underway later this year. The 32-year-old&nbsp;became the first Indian male shuttler in 36 years to clinch a bronze medal in the BWF World Championships in 2019. He achieved the feat after Prakash Padukone did so in 1983. The shuttler was honoured with the prestigious Arjuna Award in the same year as well.

Taking to his official handle on X, formerly known as Twitter, Praneeth shared a lengthy note while announcing his decision to step aside from the sport as a player. Here is the post:

Soon after his retirement, he spoke at length about his decision to The Hindu. He said, "There is no specific reason but I felt the way I had to struggle last year because of a combination of factors including injuries, I thought I cannot cope with the demanding schedule of playing sometimes two matches in a day in some of the majors. Well, age is also a factor. At 32, I could have played at the most another one year. So, I took the call after discussing it with my parents and my wife (Sweta). There are no regrets at all."

Reflecting on his highs and lows, Praneeth said, "Well, losing in the first round of 2020 Olympics has been the biggest disappointment while winning the 2019 World Championship bronze and the Singapore Open should be the high points of my career. Looking back at the journey, I am quite satisfied with my contribution to Indian badminton and I hope I will be remembered as a special player in a group which really dominated the world stage."

He added, "Beating the likes of Lee Chong Wei in 2016 All England in the first round and some of the big names like Chen Long, Taufik Hidayat and Lin Dan are great memories for sure. Frankly, I feel I have done what I could in the long career. Yes, I could have won some big tournaments and then the script would have been different."

Praneeth concluded by saying, "I do believe even if there can be a gap once our group of players (the others being K. Srikanth, H.S. Prannoy, P. Kashyap, Sameer Varma) quit the sport. Yes, there are some real good players like Lakshya (Sen) and Priyanshu. I hope they will continue the legacy."

In recent years, Praneeth's progress has been halted due to regular injury concerns. Thus, this prompted him to step aside but he still has a lot to offer and it will be interesting to see how he contributes in whatever new role he takes up going ahead.

Badminton: World championship bronze medallist Sai Praneeth announces retirement

Russia has lost its appeal against an International Olympic Committee (IOC) suspension for recognising regional organisations from territories annexed from Ukraine, the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) said on Friday.

The IOC banned the Russian Olympic Committee (ROC) in October for recognising regional Olympic councils for Russian-occupied regions of Ukraine - Luhansk, Donetsk, Kherson and Zaporizhzhia.

The suspension ensures the ROC will not be eligible for funding and will not be associated with the Olympic movement, but does not affect any decision on Russian athletes' participation at the Paris 2024 Olympics.

At the time, the IOC said the move to recognise the regional Olympic councils constituted a breach of the Olympic Charter because it violated the territorial integrity of Ukraine's NOC.

"The IOC is pleased that the CAS confirmed the IOC Executive Board decision on 12 October 2023 to suspend the Russian Olympic Committee," the Olympic body said in a statement.

"The IOC EB decision followed the unilateral decision taken by the ROC on 5 October 2023 to include, as its members, the regional sports organisations which are under the authority of the National Olympic Committee of Ukraine, which constitutes a breach of the Olympic Charter."

"The IOC EB decision has been duly implemented since it was taken," the IOC said.

Russia, which launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, which Moscow calls a 'special operation', has denounced the measure as politically motivated.

In its appeal at the Lausanne-based CAS, the highest court in global sport, ROC asked for the ban to be revoked and that it be recognised as a fully-fledged NOC, with all the prerogatives the status entails.

"The CAS Panel in charge of this matter dismissed the appeal and confirmed the challenged decision, finding that the IOC EB (Executive Board) did not breach the principles of legality, equality, predictability or proportionality," CAS said in a statement.

Reuters has contacted the ROC for comment.

Russian and Belarusian athletes had initially been banned from competing internationally following Russia's invasion of Ukraine, for which Belarus has been used as a staging ground.

Last year, however, the IOC issued an initial set of recommendations for international sports governing bodies to allow Russians and Belarusians to return, competing as individual athletes with no flag, emblem or anthem.

The IOC has said athletes should not be punished for the actions of governments.

Paris Olympics 2024: Russia loses appeal against IOC suspension

For the first time, the Indian men’s and women’s table tennis teams have qualified for the 2024 Summer Games in Paris, scheduled later this year. Despite losing their pre-quarterfinal clashes at the ITTF World Table Tennis Teams Championships in Busan on Wednesday, both teams qualified by taking the last world ranking spot.

At Busan, hosts Korea beat ten-time national champion Sharath Kamal-led men’s team 3-0. The women’s team, however, put up a stern competition but lost 1-3 to the higher-ranked Chinese Taipei, including world number 10 Cheng I-Ching and World Number 41 Szu-Yu Chen.

India qualified for the Table Tennis Team Event for the first time since its introduction at the 2008 Beijing Summer Games. The official list of team rankings will come out on March 5, said Kamlesh Mehta, general secretary of Table Tennis Federation of India.

“The men’s and the women’s teams played very well, and we’re proud of them. We’re waiting for the official announcement that we have qualified for the Paris Olympics, which will come on the 5th of March,” Kamlesh Mehta said as quoted by the Indian Express.

<h2>'Happy with the achievement'</h2>

Speaking on the same, top Indian Table Tennis player Gnanasekaran Sathiyan said though the official announcement around quota allotment is yet to be announced, everyone in the camp is happy with the achievement. He added India waited for this moment for a long time and thanked the coaches, support staff and SAI for a breakthrough.

“The entire team is very excited. We were looking forward to this day for a very long time. We’re extremely happy that we’ve made the cut for the Olympics though we have to wait for the quota to be confirmed officially," said&nbsp;Sathiyan

“It’s truly a fantastic team effort by everyone, the coaches, support staff, federation and SAI. I think it’s truly historic for something like this to happen, to qualify as a team in both men’s and women’s,” he added.

Considering that only two wins in this event guarantee a medal spot at the Summer Games, this 16-team event comes across as a sought-after event. Besides, it also guarantees two singles entries for the Paris Olympics.

Per the latest standings, Manika Batra and Sreeja should go through in the women’s category and there would be a tossup between World No.67 Harmeet Desai, veteran Sharath, Sathiyan and Manav Thakkar for the two spots.&nbsp;

Besides, Sathiyan should also qualify for the mixed doubles event, partnering with Batra.

On Tuesday (Feb 20), the Equestrian Federation of India (EFI) confirmed that Anush Agarwalla, who secured a bronze&nbsp;medal&nbsp;at the Asian Games last year, has fetched a Paris Olympics quota for the country in the dressage discipline. The 24-year-old earned the quota after an impressive run in the four FEI events: Wroclaw, Poland (73.485%), Kronenberg, Netherlands (74.4%), Frankfurt, Germany (72.9%), and Mechelen, Belgium (74.2%).

It is to be noted that the quota is allocated to the nation, hence, the EFI will now conduct&nbsp;a final trial to determine the Indian representative for&nbsp;the much-awaited Paris 2024 event&nbsp;later this year.

A "saddened and disappointed" Manny Pacquiao conceded Monday his Olympic boxing dream was over after the ring great was denied a berth at this year's Paris games.

The International Olympic Committee rejected a special request for Pacquiao to take part, the Philippine Olympic Committee announced Sunday.

Pacquiao, 45, who hung up his gloves in 2021 before an unsuccessful presidential run, said he respected the decision of the IOC, which has an age limit of 40 for Olympic boxers.

"While I am very saddened and disappointed, I understand and accept the age-limit rules," said a statement from Pacquiao, who won world titles at eight different weights during a glittering professional ring career spanning more than a quarter of a century.

The Philippines last year asked the IOC for a "universality place" for Pacquiao, who has never boxed in the Olympics.

Boxing: Manny Pacquiao accepts fate as IOC denies him spot at 2024 Paris Games

French President&nbsp;Emmanuel&nbsp;Macron&nbsp;has intervened in a row over the removal of booksellers from the banks of the river Seine for the Paris Olympics, ruling that they should stay at their historic locations, his office said on Tuesday.

Hundreds of booksellers, who operate from little dark green boxes by the river, were set to be temporarily removed ahead of the Olympics opening ceremony on the Seine on July 26.

The head of the Cultural Association of Booksellers of Paris had likened their relocation to a "tooth extraction" and the organisation announced last month that it would launch legal efforts to stop the process.

Macron&nbsp;"has asked the interior minister and the Paris prefect's office that all of the booksellers are preserved and that none of them are forced to move," a statement from the president's office said.

The decision came after "no consensual and reassuring solution" could be found with the traders, who have been a feature of Parisian life for some 150 years.

Already struggling to bounce back from shutdowns during the Covid pandemic and a longer-run loss of interest from locals, the booksellers are desperate to profit from the arrival of an estimated 16 million tourists during the Games.

The sporting extravaganza is set to begin with national teams sailing down a 6.0-kilometre (four-mile) stretch of the Seine on more than 100 boats -- the first time the traditional opening ceremony has been held outside of the main stadium.

The city's police, overseen by the government-appointed prefect, had ordered the removal of around 600 of the 900 book kiosks over security concerns amid fears that they could be used to conceal explosive devices.

The format of the open-air ceremony is a huge challenge for security forces who will need to protect competitors, VIPs and spectators in a vast area of the capital at a time of heightened concern about terror attacks.&nbsp;

Moving the booksellers was also seen as a way of increasing the space for spectators on the banks of the river where around 300,000 ticketed fans are set to watch the show.

The intervention from&nbsp;Macron&nbsp;reflects concern about the impact on public opinion of removing a fixture of Parisian life, as well as growing criticism of the disruption to everyday life caused by the Games.

Advance warnings about security and transport restrictions have led many locals to plan holidays during the July 26-August 11 Olympics, sometimes in order to rent out their homes for high prices to foreign visitors.

Other complaints centre on the construction work that snares traffic daily around the capital, while resentment lingers over the handling of ticket sales last year that saw many Parisians priced out.

"Don't leave this summer, don't leave! That would be a mistake," mayor Anne Hidalgo urged the city's inhabitants on Sunday as she inaugurated the only new permanent Olympics sports arena to be built in inner Paris.&nbsp;

"It's going to be incredible," she said.

Surveys suggest a large majority of French people back the Olympics, with a poll in November indicating that 65 percent of respondents were in favour.

Most of the sporting and transport infrastructure existed before the Games, part of Paris' pitch for a relatively low-budget event that organisers say will be 50 percent less polluting than previous editions measured by CO2 emissions.

The Olympics will be followed by the Paralympics from August 28-September 8.

French President Emmanuel Macron has intervened in a row over the removal of booksellers from the banks of the river Seine for the Paris Olympics, ruling that they should stay at their historic locations, his office said on Tuesday.

French President Emmanuel Macron has intervened in a row over the removal of booksellers from the banks of the river Seine for the Paris Olympics, ruling that they should stay at their historic locations, his office said on Tuesday. Macron "has asked the interior minister and the Paris prefect's office that all of the booksellers are preserved and that none of them are forced to move," a statement from the president's office said. The format of the open-air ceremony is a huge challenge for security forces who will need to protect competitors, VIPs and spectators in a vast area of the capital at a time of heightened concern about terror attacks. Moving the booksellers was also seen as a way of increasing the space for spectators on the banks of the river where around 300,000 ticketed fans are set to watch the show. Brazil were denied the chance of winning a third straight men's Olympic football title after a 1-0 defeat to Argentina on Sunday knocked them out of qualifying for the Paris Games.

Champions in Rio 2016 and the Covid-delayed 2020 Tokyo Games, Brazil only needed a draw against their arch continental rivals on the final day of the South American pre-Olympic tournament in Venezuela.

Paraguay claimed the other ticket to Paris 2024 from South America with a 2-0 victory over Venezuela.

Midfielder Diego Gomez with a penalty in the 48th minute and forward Marcelo Perez in the 75th minute scored the goals for Carlos Jara Saguier's Paraguay, who topped the standings in the qualifying tournament ahead of Argentina.

The qualifying tournament was restricted to under-23 players, unlike at the Olympics, where teams are allowed to call on the services of three overage reinforcements.

And Argentina will now be on the phone to try to persuade one very special 36-year-old player, Lionel Messi who starred in the 2008 run to Olympic gold, to join them in Paris.

Football: Defending champion Brazil out of Paris Olympics 2024 after losing to Argentina in qualifying

PV Sindhu is gearing up for the Paris Olympics 2024. While the mega event is still some months away, the Indian star shuttler is well aware of the challenges awaiting her in the showpiece event. She admits it won't be easy to replicate her past success in the Olympics. Sindhu is a two-time Olympic medallist (silver in Rio, and bronze in Tokyo) and also&nbsp;the first Indian woman with&nbsp;successive individual Olympic medals.

In the last 18 months, Sindhu has not had the best of times. She has endured a lean patch, with a dip in form and injury setbacks. Thus, while interacting with PTI, Sindhu spoke at length about the Olympics and said, "I would say, this Olympics is going to be a different experience because the 2016 and 2020 Olympics were very different. Paris will be more challenging but at the same time, I have much more experience and I will have to be much smarter this time."

She opined,&nbsp;''In women's circuit, players in the top 10-15 are tough. It is important to be focused and have a strategy so that you can switch to plan B if plan A doesn't work. It is important to stay calm as sometimes you can go blank. It is important to have a strong mindset."

After a series of low results, Sindhu parted ways with Korean coach Park Tae-sang in early 2023. She trained with Sports Authority of India's (SAI) Vidhi Chaudhary and with Malaysia's former All-England champion Muhammad Hafiz Hashim, in July, but the ordinary results continued.&nbsp;Just then,&nbsp;former All England Champion Prakash Padukone reached out to her and the shuttler did not waste time in changing her base to Bengaluru.

Currently, she is&nbsp;training under Indonesia's Agus Santoso at Prakash Padukone Badminton Academy (PPBA). Shedding light on her new trainer and the road ahead, the 28-year-old said, ''I have a new trainer, physio, nutritionist, coach, and mentor, so everything is very new, and I am happy how they have been supporting me and are helping me from where I am and where I should be in the next couple of months."

''I am very fortunate to work with Prakash sir because he is such a legend and him being a mentor helps. His training methods and ideas are helping me. As for Agus, I knew him for a long time when he was training our men's players. We will have to see how I do, it has been just a month. So things will be good moving forward. I am back to my full fitness and I am looking forward to Asia team championships," she highlighted.

Sindhu, the current world number 11, will&nbsp;return to action at the Badminton Asia Team Championships in Malaysia, which gets underway on&nbsp;Feb 13. She will look to start afresh and regain her mojo as Paris 2024 nears.

On Thursday, the Paris Olympic committee, currently under pressure for several controversial reasons revealed the design which consists of iron pieces embedded in the center of the medals each weighing 18 grams. The iron pieces were cut from girders and other bits that were swapped out of the Eiffel Tower during renovations and stored for safekeeping, according to Joachim Roncin, head of design at the Paris Games organizing committee.

French investigators have opened a legal probe into the pay of Tony Estanguet, the head of the Paris Olympics organising committee, a source close to the case told AFP on Tuesday. The investigation by magistrates specialised in financial crimes began "last week" and will look into the manner in which Estanguet receives his pay as chief executive of the organising committee, the source said on condition of anonymity.

Estanguet is paid 270,000-euro ($290,000) per year pre-tax, with possible bonuses amounting to another 20 percent, according to the last publicly available figures for his salary.&nbsp; According to a report in October last year from the investigative newspaper Le Canard Enchaine, Estanguet uses his own company to bill the organising committee monthly, instead of drawing a salary.

The arrangement is to avoid a salary cap imposed on charities with the same status as the organising committee. News of the probe from the magistrates is an embarrassing development just as Estanguet is seeking to focus attention on preparations for the July 26-August 11 Games.&nbsp;

The triple gold medal-winning Olympic canoeist, 45, had so far been spared the legal problems that have embroiled other members of the Paris organising committee. The Olympics have been repeatedly tarnished by corruption in the past, either over the manner in which the Games were awarded or through the lucrative construction and services contracts that are part of the event.

Deepika (15') gave India the lead but Charlotte Stapenhorst (27', 57') scored for Germany. Ishika Chaudhary (59') scored a late equaliser to draw it 2-2 and require a shootout, which the Germans prevailed 4-3 in. Germany was the early aggressor and appeared increasingly dangerous as the game progressed. However, the Indian defence held firm and well stopped the German attacks, including two penalty corners, with captain Savita Punia in goal.

World No. 6 India had gradually gained momentum in the game, mostly through attacks on the left side. With barely one minute remaining in the first quarter, the hosts got their first penalty corner. Deepika took full advantage of it, driving past German goaltender Julia Sonntag with a strong drive, much to the delight of the enthusiastic Ranchi audience, which included Indian cricket icon MS Dhoni.

India appeared considerably more dangerous in the second quarter after scoring the goal. But Germans were the ones who identified the objective. Charlotte Stapenhorst's stunning turn split the Indian defence, and the German forward's clever lobbed finish brought her team level just before halftime. The second half saw both teams enjoying periods of possession as the game ebbed and flowed with everything to play for.

Both defences stood firm, though, as the third quarter concluded with a score of 1-1 despite a few near calls. Both sides went all out in the last quarter, playing end-to-end hockey. Both sides had numerous scoring opportunities, but the goalkeepers made some vital stops.

India was the one who blinked, and Charlotte Stapenhorst opened the door with yet another superb move-- this time, a steal. At a critical moment, the German attacker dispossessed an Indian defender and drove inside the circle before hitting Savita with a thunderous shot.

But the home team responded fiercely, spurred on by the supporters. As the clock ran out, India earned two consecutive penalty corners and made the second count when Ishika scored the game-winning, last-second goal to force a shootout. Savita Punia had three outstanding saves in a thrilling shootout, but the Indian players blew a 3-1 lead to lose 3-4 in sudden death.

Hockey: India's women team suffers heartbreaking defeat against Germany in Olympic qualifiers semis

Three Paris Olympics sites face slight delays and are being monitored, but all the sporting infrastructure is expected to be delivered on time for the start of the Games in July, the event's top infrastructure official said Wednesday.

Construction of one section of the athletes' village is running several weeks behind schedule, as is the renovation of the Grand Palais monument in central Paris that will host the fencing, the head of the Paris Olympics infrastructure body, Solideo, said.

A third site -- the Colombes swimming pool set to be used for training in northern Paris -- is not expected to be finished until June and is under observation.

"There are three sites out of 70 that are being monitored, without the schedule being at risk," Nicolas Ferrand told a hearing of the French Senate's sports commission.

"Overall, the works are totally on time and they are within the budget given to us, and with the levels of ambition that were set," he added.

Contractors are also racing to finish a crucial metro line extension in north and south Paris ahead of the start of the sporting extravaganza, but organisers remain confident that everything will be concluded in time.

Michel Cadot, who heads a Games co-ordination committee and is head of the National Sports Agency, also reassured the Senate committee the Games would be "perfectly on time and within budget."

The opening ceremony on July 26, which is set to see the teams sail down the river Seine in central Paris, is still being finalised.

Cadot said that the number of spectators was still under discussion with a reduction of 10-15 percent being envisaged, he said.

Organisers had initially announced plans for 600,000 people to attend in person -- most of them for free -- but the latest estimate is for 500,000, according to police and political sources.

The idea for the open-air ceremony -- the first time the parade will take place outside the athletics stadium in Olympics history -- has been dogged by criticism since its inception because of security concerns.

Cadot said that the ceremony could not be shifted to the athletics stadium as a "plan B" because it would be in use for rugby at the time.

Contingency plans entailed an "adaptation of the concept on the Seine", he said, which media reports have speculated could entail athletes being withdrawn if the risk of a terror attack was considered to be too high.

He also expressed confidence the Seine could be used for the open-water swimming and triathlon events as efforts continue to clean up the waterway.

Work is "advancing very well with remarkable results that are already visible," he told the senators.

Poor water quality forced the cancellation of three swimming test events last July and August.

Russians and Belarusians had initially been banned from competing internationally following Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, for which Belarus has been used as a staging ground.

The International Federation for Equestrian Sports (FEI) has prohibited Russian and Belarusian athletes, horses and officials from participating in its events since last year.

"According to the Olympic Qualification Systems for Equestrian, individual qualification is secured through the FEI Olympic Rankings... from 1 January 2023 to 31 December 2023," the FEI said on Thursday.

"Since Russian and Belarusian athletes have not competed in FEI Events since 2 March 2022, no representatives of these nations will take part in the Paris 2024 Olympic Games."

The measures prohibiting participation of athletes from the two countries remain in place going into next year, the FEI said.

"No FEI Events organised in Russia and Belarus can be entered in the FEI Calendar for 2024," the statement added.

Russian, Belarusian equestrians won't perform at Paris Olympics, not even as neutral athletes

The International Olympic Committee’s (IOC) executive board has approved the participation of the Russian and Belarusian athletes in the Paris Games after a meeting on Friday (Dec 8). The executive board approved the participation of the athletes on certain terms provided they participate under a neutral flag and are not in support of the Russia-Ukraine war. Athletes affiliated with the Russian and Belarusian military are also not liable to participate in the games that will start in August 2024 in the French capital.

<h2>IOC approves Russian and Belarusian athletes</h2>

The IOC's executive board "decided that Individual Neutral Athletes (AINs) who have qualified through the existing qualification systems of the International Federations (IFs) on the field of play will be declared eligible to compete at the Olympic Games Paris 2024".

According to IOC only eight athletes from Russia and three from Belarus have qualified as neutral athletes for the Paris Olympics.

Russian athletes were earlier banned from participating in the Olympics after the nation launched a war against Ukraine in March 2022. This resulted in athletes getting banned from representing the nation in any international event. Belarusian athletes were also on the receiving end after the nation declared support for Russia. As a result, Russian sports faced a huge backlash from the international federations.

The governing body of European football suspended the Russian Football Association while tennis players were asked to compete under neutral flags. Russia was stripped of hosting the 2022 Champions League final while the national side was also thrown out of the FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

<h2>What are the conditions of IOC?</h2>

The exclusion includes "teams of athletes with a Russian or Belarusian passport". Also missing out will be "athletes who actively support the war" as well as "athletes who are contracted to the Russian or Belarusian military or national security agencies".

Additionally, "no flag, anthem, colours or any other identifications whatsoever of Russia or Belarus will be displayed at the Olympic Games Paris 2024 in any official venue or any official function".

As expected, the IOC also stated that no Russian or Belarusian government or state officials will be invited to the Paris Games.

The ban also means, Russia will compete at the Olympics under a neutral flag for the second consecutive time having also faced a similar incident in the 2020 Games. Russian athletes were entered by and represented the "Russian Olympic Committee", using the acronym "ROC", due to the consequences of the doping scandal in the country.
