Stephen Curry admits playing on a stacked USA Olympic team where he is not expected to carry the offence like he does with the Golden State Warriors in the NBA is requiring a great deal of adjustment. The star point guard scored just three points in 22 minutes during USA's 98-92 win over Australia in a warm-up game in Abu Dhabi on Monday that saw the Americans almost blow a 20-point lead in the last 15 minutes.

Lakers center Anthony Davis came off the bench to lead the scoring for USA with 17 points and 14 rebounds, while Minnesota Timberwolves' Anthony Edwards was right behind him with 14 points, four rebounds and two assists.

"It's an adjustment, not just for me, for everybody," said Curry, who will be making his Olympics debut in Paris this summer. "Even how we're rotating the lineups right now, just because we're trying to get a feel for different combinations. "You're going five minutes at a time, then you sit. Hockey subs, that's different, how we're playing with the talent around, that's a different adjustment. "It's just a mindfulness of knowing where your shots might come and being ready for those."

Head coach Steve Kerr had said before the game he planned on testing out different starting lineups during these exhibition games and he did indeed tweak the first unit he used in last week's win over Canada, keeping LeBron James, Curry, and Joel Embiid but starting Edwards and Jayson Tatum instead of Jrue Holiday and Devin Booker.

Kevin Durant remains sidelined with a calf strain, while Davis, Booker, Holiday, Bam Adebayo, and Tyrese Haliburton served as the second unit that alternated with the starters throughout the game.

USA led by 20 points midway through the third quarter but the Aussies narrowed their deficit to just six points with five minutes left in the fourth. Back-to-back threes from Indiana Pacers' Haliburton briefly got the Americans back on track but the Boomers upped the pressure once again and got dangerously close to erasing the gap.

Australia's Jock Landale, Josh Giddey and Dyson Daniels all finished in the double digits and combined for 51 points. Kerr said Monday's game -– the second of five friendlies USA will play prior to the Olympics -– was a welcome warning against complacency and a reminder the team can't take their foot off the gas pedal after building big leads.

He is confident there is enough time for the group -– which is the most star-studded and most decorated to represent USA since the famous Dream Team of 1992 –- to iron out the kinks before their Olympics opener against Serbia in Lille on July 28. Kerr paid special tribute to Davis, who also found himself in an unfamiliar role on Monday, coming off the bench.

"He was amazing tonight, he's been fantastic those first 10 days or whatever we've been together," said Kerr. "Obviously we've got a lot of talent, every single guy is capable of starting and playing big minutes.

The strength of our team is our depth and we have to utilise that depth and put pressure on teams for 40 minutes, regardless of the combinations." Next up for USA is an exhibition clash on Wednesday in Abu Dhabi against Serbia, who will be led by reigning NBA MVP Nikola Jokic. Jokic and his Serbian teammates were in the stands and watched the first half of the USA-Australia game.

"They're a great team. They're in our pool in Paris and we're going to have to beat them when it counts in a couple of weeks but it'll be good to get a good feel for what we're going to face," said Curry of the 2023 World Cup silver medallists. "They have a very strong, big, physical team and we have to match that physicality and be able to play Team USA basketball. It would be good to get some film on it too."

Paris Olympics: Stephen Curry says playing for USA an 'adjustment' after warm-up win vs Australia

Tokyo badminton gold medallist Viktor Axelsen is not resting on his laurels ahead of the Paris Olympics but the Dane is being careful not to overdo it in training having reached the age of 30. With nine Olympic medals, Denmark has for years been a top contender in badminton. Two of those medals have been gold - one bagged in men's singles three years ago by Axelsen.

Axelsen told Reuters that people tended to underestimate the physical intensity of the sport but that he was looking for a bit more balance in his training regime heading to Paris. "It has been more of a challenge this time around, making sure that I time my training in the right way and don't overdo it," Axelsen, who towers over his rivals at nearly 2 metres tall, said. "While before the Tokyo Olympics, I could just push in training and I recovered a little bit faster than I'm doing now. "I've turned 30 as well and I think that makes a big difference. In your 30s, you really have to make sure that you do everything you can in order to recover."

Axelsen said he had recovered well from rolling his right ankle during a match against Taiwan's Lin Chun-Yi at the Singapore Open in late May, an injury that forced him to withdraw from the semi-finals of that tournament.

The main threats to his bid to emulate Lin Dan in 2008 and 2012 by retaining the men's singles title are China's Shi Yuqi and Malaysia's Lee Zii Jia but also his compatriot Anders Antonsen, the fourth seed.

"An all-Denmark final would obviously be absolutely amazing," Axelsen said. "But, let's see - there are obviously a lot of strong contenders. "There's a big bunch of players in the top 15 who can who can make a run for it," Axelsen said. "We are closer in level -- the difference in level of play is not how it was in Tokyo."

USA men's basketball team head coach Steve Kerr has downplayed Kevin Durant's calf injury that has kept the triple Olympic gold medallist from training with the group ahead of the Paris Games.

Team USA touched down in Abu Dhabi on Friday ahead of two scheduled exhibition games against Australia (July 15) and Serbia (July 17) as they ramp up their preparations for the Olympics.

Durant, who suffered a calf strain two weeks ago, was present at Saturday's session at the New York University Abu Dhabi campus but once again did not join his teammates in practice.

Kerr remains unconcerned, though, and says they have not discussed any contingency plans to replace the Phoenix Suns forward on the roster.

"He won't practise with the team today, he'll continue to do individual work," Kerr told reporters in the UAE capital on Saturday.

"I know there's still a couple of weeks before we have to make a decision roster-wise, so we're just taking it day by day."

"It's not something we've even discussed at this point," Kerr said when asked about a back-up plan. "Because we feel good that he's going to be okay, it's just day to day."

But they have already had to make a replacement in the squad, bringing in a third Celtic, Derrick White, to take the spot of Kawhi Leonard, who left training camp last Wednesday in Las Vegas.

The Americans are playing five friendly games in the build-up to Paris, the first of which saw them defeat Canada 86-72 on Wednesday night at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

Joel Embiid, the 2023 NBA MVP, fouled out midway through the third quarter but Kerr is certain the Philadelphia 76ers centre will be up for the task of guarding all the bigs they come up against at the Olympics.

"Joel will be fine. He's going to get into the rhythm and the flow," he assured. "It always takes big guys a little bit longer to get into flow in training."

James is playing under Kerr for the first time in his career and described the Golden State Warriors coach as a "true leader and true student of the game".

Chasing a third Olympic gold medal and fourth overall, James, 39, is the oldest player on the roster.

Donning a USA jersey for the first time in 12 years, James is keen to share his experience with the younger players on the team, especially knowing that this will be his final Games.

"It's always a responsibility that you should hold with honour and being able to give back to the younger generation because they have to keep going when we're done," said James.&nbsp;

"So it's definitely a responsibility for myself, KD, and Steph to be able to just show them the ropes."

Boasting their most star-studded squad since the fabled 1992 'Dream Team', USA are gunning for a fifth consecutive Olympic gold medal and 17th men's title at the Games overall.

After completing their exhibition games schedule in Abu Dhabi and London, the Americans will kick off their Olympics title defence against their Group C rivals Serbia in Lille on July 28 before facing South Sudan on July 31 and Puerto Rico on August 3.

India Olympic Association (IOA) on Monday (July 8) announced star badminton player PV Sindhu as the female flag bearer for the Paris Olympic Games while table tennis star Sharath Kamal will do so for the men’s contingent. The appointments were confirmed on Monday with the majority of Indian athletes having touched down in Paris ahead of the Olympics ceremony which takes in little over two weeks. On the other hand, the 2012 London Games shooting bronze medallist Gagan Narang will be the contingent’s Chef-de-Mission where he replaced MC Mary Kom.

<h2>Sindhu, Kamal to lead India’s contingent</h2>

"I was looking for an Olympic medallist to lead our contingent and my young colleague is an apt replacement for Mary Kom," IOA President PT Usha said in a press release.

"I am also delighted to announce that India's only woman to win two Olympic medals, PV Sindhu, was the female flag-bearer alongside table tennis ace A Sharath Kamal in the opening ceremony," Usha said.

After a change in Olympics protocol in 2020 (held in 2021), every country participating in the Olympics must name a male and a female flag bearer. In the Tokyo Olympics, Mary Kom (boxing) and former hockey captain Manpreet Singh were named as flag bearers. This year Sharath Kamal was named the flag bearer in the male contingent back in March, but the announcement of the female bearer was delayed.

On the other hand, Mary Kom’s refusal to take the honour of Chef-de-Mission meant, the deputy in charge Gagan Narang would now take charge during the Paris Olympics. Like Mary Kom, Narang also won an Olympic medal when he shot bronze in the London Games in 2012 in a 10m pistol.

"I am confident that our athletes are well prepared to deliver the best results for India in the Paris 2024 Olympic Games," Usha added.

India will be sending close to 120 athletes to Paris and will expect to break their previous record for most medals and strike gold in multiple events.

Taliban has said that it doesn't recognise Afghanistan women athletes participating in Paris Olympics 2024. The news was confirmed by a sports official of Taliban which currently rules Afghanistan post the USA's exit in 2021.

A total of six athletes including three women, mostly in exile, will be taking part in the upcoming summer games.

"Only three athletes (referring to the male competitors) are representing Afghanistan," said spokesman of the Taliban government's sports directorate Atal Mashwani to news agency AFP.

"Currently, in Afghanistan girls' sports have been stopped. When girls' sport isn't practiced, how can they go on the national team?," he added.

He also said that the Taliban government is supporting the male athletes with training and scholarships as well.

Two of three male athletes live outside Afghanistan while one judo fighter trains in the country. Women athletes, all living in exile, will be participating in athletics and cycling.

International Olympic Committee (IOC) said that they have not consulted Taliban officials about the Afghanistan team and that they were not invited to the games.

IOC spokesman Mark Adams also confirmed "sole interlocutors for the preparation and participation of the Afghan team" is Afghanistan national Olympic committee which operates from outside the country. The Afghan committee also includes the president and secretary-general - both in exile.

Committee's CEO Dad Mohammad Payenda Akhtari, however, lives in Taliban-ruled country and said the coordination was done with Taliban over male candidates.

Afghanistan were also banned in 1999 games - during the first rule of Taliban from 1996 to 2001.

Afghanistan was reinstated after the Taliban were ousted by the post-9/11 invasion, but the Paris games mark the first summer Olympics since their return.

This time, the IOC has taken a different approach -- approving the Afghan team under a system ensuring all 206 nations are represented, in cases where athletes wouldn't otherwise qualify.

Paris Olympics 2024: Taliban denies recognition to Afghanistan female athletes taking part in games

Australia will be sending their largest ever team of track and field athletes to an overseas&nbsp;Olympics&nbsp;in Paris later this month with the 75-strong squad taking the overall delegation of competitors to a final 460. The overall delegation is the second largest for a Games since Australia hosted in Sydney, 16 athletes fewer than represented the country and won 17 gold medals at the Tokyo&nbsp;Olympics&nbsp;three years ago.

"The athletics team is the largest of any sport and they will contribute greatly to the positive environment of the broader team," Chef de Mission Anna Meares said in a statement. "Today's announcement finalises our Australian Olympic team at 460 athletes -- I am so excited for Australians to see this team represent them with pride and determination in under three weeks' time."

World champion pole vaulter Nina Kennedy and two Tokyo bronze medallists, decathlete Ash Moloney and javelin thrower Kelsey-Lee Barber, headline the track and field squad to which 55 athletes were added on Monday.

"I have a very clear definition of what success means to me, and that is being able to walk away from the Olympic final knowing I've done everything I possibly could have," said Kennedy. "If that wins a gold medal, amazing, and if it doesn't then I can walk away with no regrets."

Barber will form part of three-strong entry for the women's javelin with Mackenzie Little, who won bronze at last year's world championships, and 41-year-old Kathryn Mitchell, who will be appearing at her fourth Games.

Australia will send men's and women's 4x100 metres relay squads to Paris for the first time since the 2000 Games on home soil in Sydney and compete in 39 of the 48 athletics events. The women's sprint relay team will feature Torrie Lewis, the teenager who beat Sha'carri Richardson and the rest of a strong field to win the 200m on her Diamond League debut in Xiamen.

"After having such an amazing year getting the official selection is just a relief," the 19-year-old said. "I've always thought I could make an individual event, but actually getting the call is so exciting."

Paris Olympics: Athletics squad takes Australia's team up to 460

Spiralling travel and accommodation costs, French political tumult and security concerns are discouraging many sports fans and visitors from attending the Paris Olympic Games this summer.

Cities that win a coveted chance to host the world's biggest sporting event often do so on expectations that they will attract throngs of visitors to showcase themselves and boost their economy.

But Paris has a handful of factors going against it that have held down bookings.

Flight bookings to the French capital - an indicator of tourist activity - are expected to increase by 10% year-on-year from June 6 onwards, according to flight ticketing data firm ForwardKeys.

That is a stark contrast to the 115% increase in tourist arrivals for the 2016 Rio Games. Even the Tokyo Games, held during the COVID-19 pandemic, saw a 20% increase, ForwardKeys said.

Data from Paris-based consultancy MKG shows hotel reservations have dropped since last year for the weeks ahead of the Olympics, along with a 25% revenue decline for much of June.

The data alongside interviews with travel agents, sports fans and ticket sellers show high prices and security concerns are making even the most ardent Olympic fans reluctant to attend.

"Right now, it's the lowest bookings we've seen in 25 years for almost any sports event," Alan Bachand, a sports travel agent based in the United States, told Reuters.

The findings underscore the challenges major cities face hosting international sporting events - they are already crowded and expensive, scaring off more price-conscious consumers.

They also show that unrelenting travel demand, with travellers willing to splash cash on experiences rather than goods in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, is slowing as they become more sensitive to increased prices.

London experienced something similar in 2012. It only saw a 3% increase in arrivals, as many tourists steered clear of a city that would normally be inundated with tourists over the summer.

Still, it will be a blow for the French capital - one study recently estimated the Games would generate up to $12 billion in economic benefits to the Paris region. Last year, the Australian state of Victoria withdrew from staging the Commonwealth Games because of ballooning costs.

<h2>Night Bus</h2>

Emma Mathieson, 29, has tickets in August for the women's bronze football match in Lyon and is hoping to get tickets to the gold match the following day in Paris.

But rather than staying overnight afterwards, she will catch a night bus back to London. Accommodation of over 300 euros ($323) for the night was above her budget.

"I would have loved to have seen more women's matches or group stages if it was more affordable," she said.

Average hotel prices between July 26 and Aug. 11 have surged by 70% to 342 euros a night from last year, according to the Paris tourist office.

Even wealthier visitors have been put off. Bachand said four-star hotels were charging up to 1,000 euros a night during the competition, with many clients shying away as a result.

Even so, homesharing site Airbnb says it has seen record Paris bookings. As of March, nights booked in the Paris region during the games were 400% higher than the same time a year ago.

<h3>Business Fallout</h3>

However, Air France-KLM said on Monday it expected weaker-than-expected summer sales as travellers avoid the Olympics.

Global Travel Moments, a luxury travel agency, said clients had also cited security worries in addition to pricing as a reason to postpone their trips.

France is on its highest level of security alert as the Games approach, with the country additionally undergoing snap legislative elections.

Islamist terrorism is the main security worry, the French capital's chief of police Laurent Nunez said last month.

"People are giving it a wide berth given the current climate," said Duncan Greenfield-Turk, Global Travel Moments' chief travel designer, citing "challenges" like the election called by President Emmanuel Macron.

One client recently postponed a trip to Paris until next year while another chose to visit before the games, he said.

Luxury retailers are hoping to boost sales in other areas outside of Paris as tourists avoid the French capital.

<h3>Benefits</h3>

Some travel agencies hope there will be a last-minute rush for tickets and accommodation and potential discounts in the final weeks before the games begin.

Visitors may be arriving by train or car which will not show up in flight data, but could drive last-minute home rental bookings, said Jamie Lane, short-term rental analytics firm AirDNA chief economist.

Eurostar said train ticket sales volumes to Paris until July 1 for the Olympics and Paralympics travel period were up 7% year-on-year.

"It's going to be okay. In France, as usual, they're always not happy and always criticising," said Samuel Riezzo, who runs a firm selling tickets for sports events.

High cost, safety concerns hit bookings for 2024 Olympic Games in Paris

Tareg Hamedi went from being a hard-working student athlete to a national hero and millionaire after landing Saudi Arabia's second ever Olympic silver medal in the karate competition in Tokyo three years ago.

Olympic medals remain a rarity for athletes from the Arab world but those who do manage to get onto the podium can expect lavish rewards, from luxury cars to land grants as well as a healthy boost to their bank balances.

Even as the sporting world debates the decision by World Athletics to award $50,000 to track and field gold medallists at the Paris Olympics, athletes from the region can be sure of much bigger paydays if they can snare a title in France.

In Tokyo, Hamedi missed out on claiming his country's first gold medal in controversial circumstances when he knocked out his opponent with an illegal high kick in the final and was disqualified.

Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman told Hamedi he was a gold medallist in his country's eyes and the fighter was rewarded with the full 5 million riyal ($1.33 million) prize promised to Olympic title winners.

Offering huge financial incentives to medal winners is not unknown elsewhere - Hong Kong fencer Cheung Ka Long banked HK$5 million ($640,311) for his Tokyo gold - but bestowing honours on champions has a long history in the Arab world.

Olympic medallists can expect streets, schools and bridges to be named after them and it is not just oil-rich Gulf nations that offer lavish gifts and monetary rewards.

In Algeria, it is customary for the country's president to honour Olympic champions with gifts from ranging from luxury cars to apartments.

The winner of a gold medal in Morocco receives two million dirhams ($200,000) while Egypt's National Olympic Committee, in agreement with sponsors, has raised the value of a gold medal to five million Egyptian pounds ($105,218) for Paris.

The entire Iraqi national football team that qualified for Paris Olympics recently received plots of land and financial bonuses from the prime minister.

Qatar has long used financial incentives to attract athletes from other countries to compete for the gas-rich state and the rewards for medal success are thought to be generous, even if they are not publicly disclosed.

Egypt-born weightlifter Fares Ibrahim Hassouna switched allegiance to win Qatar's first Olympic gold medal in Tokyo in 2021 in a move that did not go down well with the Egyptian Weightlifting Federation.

"They splash money on him just as football clubs do on players," federation chief Mahmoud Mahgoub said at the time.

Cash, luxury cars and land grants – Governments' promise to Arab medallists at Paris Games

Four-time Olympic gold medallist Simone Biles is headed to the Paris Games with a resounding all-around victory at the US gymnastics trials on Sunday.

Biles capped her trials with another electrifying floor routine, her high-flying tumbling bringing the crowd to its feet.

She piled up 117.225 over two days of competition to earn an automatic berth on the five-strong team for Paris.

Three years after a bout of the disorienting "twisties" cut short Biles's Tokyo Games campaign, the gymnast considered the best of all time will return to the Olympic stage looking stronger than ever.

"I knew I wasn't done after the performances in Tokyo," Biles said. "I knew I'd be back."

Since returning to competition last August, she has captured world championships all-around gold and three weeks ago she grabbed her ninth national all-around title.

Biles launched her night with a soaring version of her Yurchenko double pike vault, and even though she skittered backwards a few steps on landing she scored 15.50 points for a vault so difficult that no other woman has attempted it in competition.

After a sub-par balance beam performance on day one left her clearly furious, Biles was rolling through an impressive routine when she lost her balance and fell off the beam -- still scoring an impressive 13.900.

Suni Lee, the Tokyo Olympics all-around gold medalist who is back as she manages not just one but two career-threatening kidney diseases, finished second overall with 111.675 points and was named to the team -- which in fact turned out to be the top-five all-around finishers.

Also Paris-bound are Jordan Chiles, part of the silver medal-winning US team in Tokyo who was third, Tokyo floor gold medallist Jade Carey who was fourth and 16-year-old Hezly Rivera -- who was buoyed by a strong showing on balance beam and capped her night with a solid vault.

It was a triumphant and emotional night for Lee in front of ecstatic fans in her home state of Minnesota.

"I was reminded of my goals every day and constantly surrounded by people who never let me give up," Lee said, breaking down in tears as she recalled that a year ago she didn't think a return to the Games would be possible."

Chiles said she was doing it for "the two I lost last year, my grandpa and my aunt.

"They always believed in me and that's what made me continue to push my dream, push to another olympics which is crazy to say," she said.

All eyes in Paris, however, will be on Biles, who heads to France an overwhelming favorite to add to the four golds she won in Rio de Janeiro in 2016.

"I love these girls, and I'm going to take care of them in Paris," Biles said.

"I knew I wasn't done after the performances in Tokyo," Biles said. "I knew I'd be back." ALSO READ: Wimbledon 2024: Andy Murray unsure of singles participation, to take a final call on Monday Since returning to competition last August, she has captured world championships all-around gold and three weeks ago she grabbed her ninth national all-around title. "I was reminded of my goals every day and constantly surrounded by people who never let me give up," Lee said, breaking down in tears as she recalled that a year ago she didn't think a return to the Games would be possible." Chiles said she was doing it for "the two I lost last year, my grandpa and my aunt.

Gymnastics: Gold medal favourite Simone Biles qualifies for Paris Olympics

Simone Biles continued her march toward the Paris Olympics on Friday with a dynamic day one at the US gymnastics trials that featured brilliance and a little reminder that she's human, too.

The four-time Olympic gold medallist thrilled the Target Center crowd with her signature Yurchenko double pike vault, now also known as the Biles II.

She earned 15.975 points for the vault which no other woman has attempted in competition.

Biles topped the all-around standings after the first night of competition on 58.900 points, with the all-around winner after day two on Sunday guaranteed a trip to Paris, where gymnastics competition begins in just under a month.

The other four spots on the team will be decided by a selection committee, based on results at trials and in prior events with an eye toward maximizing the squad's scoring potential in Paris.

Jordan Chiles, part of the US silver medal-winning team in Tokyo, was second with 56.400 points.

Tokyo all-around champion Suni Lee, eying a return trip to the Games after battling back from kidney disease, was in third on 56.025 points after a night when injuries to two Olympic contenders ratcheted up the stress for everyone.

Biles's coach, Laurent Landi, said the injuries to Shilese Jones and Kayla DiCello at the start of the night affected everyone, Biles included.

"It's always hard to see one of your teammates really getting hurt," he said. "You need to be in your own bubble. We just told them to calm down and just to think about themselves, one event at a time, one skill at a time."

Biles's 37 world championship and Olympic medals make her the most decorated gymnast of all time. That haul includes a dazzling four gold from the 2016 Rio Olympics.

But three years ago, her Tokyo Games campaign came to an abrupt halt as she pulled out of a string of events as she battled the temporary mental block gymnasts call "the twisties," which causes them to lose their sense of where they are in the air.

Once unsure if she would bid for a third Olympic team, Biles has only gained strength since her return to competition in August, capturing all-around gold at the World Championships last year and grabbing her ninth national all-around title earlier this month.

Biles enchanted the Target Center crowd with a floor routine that featured a breathtaking triple-twisting double somersault on her first tumbling pass.

She had launched her night with a rock-solid parallel bars performance that garnered 14.425 points.

But Biles was clearly unhappy with a shaky balance beam routine.

She had to fight to hang on as she mounted the beam and had another wobble on a spin.

Her score of 13.650 was well below the 14.800 she put up twice at the US championships and, after a big step back on her dismount, Biles departed the podium looking furious.

Super woman Simone Biles readies for Paris Games as injuries headline US Olympic gymnastics trials

The river Seine is still failing water quality tests one month before the Paris Olympics when it is scheduled to host the open-water swimming competition and the swimming leg of the triathlon, results showed Friday.

The latest tests, completed last week and released by the Paris mayor's office, showed levels of the E.Coli bacteria -- an indicator of faecal matter -- are far above the upper limits imposed by sports federations.

On June 18, the level of E.Coli was 10 times acceptable levels and at no point did it fall below the upper limit of 1,000 colony-forming units per 100 millilitres (cfu/ml) used by the World Triathlon Federation.

The readings for enterococci bacteria were better, but they were still at unsafe levels for three of the seven days of last week.

"Water quality remains degraded because of unfavourable hydrological conditions, little sunshine, below-average seasonal temperatures and upstream pollution," the mayor's office said in a statement.

French authorities have spent 1.4 billion euros ($1.5 billion) in the last decade trying to clean up the river by improving the Paris sewerage system, as well as building new water treatment and storage facilities.

But major storms still overwhelm the capital's waste water network, some of which dates back to the 19th century, leading to discharges of untreated sewage directly into the river.

After months of unusually wet weather, the Seine is currently high up its banks, with its flow around four to five times higher than its usual level in the summer months, according to recent readings.

Organisers insist that some dry weather and sunshine in coming weeks should be sufficient to make the Seine fit for the outdoor swimming events.

"We are still confident with the delivery of the competitions in the river Seine," chief Paris 2024 organiser Tony Estanguet told reporters on Tuesday during a visit to the Olympic village in northern Paris.

"We knew from the beginning that the plan that we decided was really aligned with good conditions at the end of July," he said, speaking in English. "Now we are entering the final lap and the good zone."

<h2>Delays</h2>

The high water levels and rain are also disrupting preparations for the opening ceremony which is also set to take place on the river on July 26.

For the first time for a summer Olympics, the Games will begin outside of the main stadium, with athletes set to sail six kilometres (four miles) down the famed waterway on nearly 100 river boats.

But with currents unusually strong, organisers cancelled the first full practice session for the ceremony on Monday.

Paris mayor Anne Hidalgo, who wants to create public swimming spots in the river next year as part of the Olympics legacy, also had to postpone a planned dip to demonstrate its cleanliness last weekend.

She has promised to take to the water during the week of July 14 instead.

Constantly asked about contingency plans if the Seine remains too dirty and turbulent once the Games begin, Paris 2024 organisers publicly insist there are no alternatives to their plans.

Behind the scenes, sources have told AFP that the opening ceremony can be scaled back and could even become a much-shortened parade over a bridge in front of the Eiffel Tower.

For the open-water swimming, organisers have flexibility in the schedule, enabling them to delay the competition for several days in the event of a downpour that would lead to a spike in pollution.

In the worst-case scenario, it would be cancelled.&nbsp;

The triathlon can also be moved in the schedule and could become a duathlon -- just running and cycling -- without the swimming.

Local newspaper reports in Nice, southern France, suggested this week that the triathlon could be moved to the Riviera holiday spot, but this was denied by the organising commitee.

Athletes are busy training and trying to ignore the noise.

"Every time, there's been problems," French open-water swimming coach Stephane Lecat said last week, referring to last-minute suspense around Guanabara Bay for the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics and concerns about the water quality in Tokyo in 2021.

"There are places around Europe that are a lot worse than the Seine and we swim there every year," he added.

Tests reveal River Seine unfit for swimming one month from 2024 Paris Olympics

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) on Thursday invited 22 Russian and 17 Belarusian athletes to compete at the Paris Olympics as neutrals even though some have already decided against taking part.

A second list of names authorised to compete in the July 26-August 11 showpiece included competitors from tennis, shooting and rowing.

The first list, which was published on June 15, was limited to four disciplines -- wrestling, weightlifting, cycling and trampoline.

That also included the first refusals including Russian cyclist Aleksandr Vlasov and five Belarusians.

Eighteen athletes have, however, already confirmed their presence - three cyclists, three trampoline specialists, two weightlifters and 10 wrestlers.

Two Belarusian rowers and two Belarusian fencers have yet to make their response known.

There is similar suspense amongst the list of tennis players issued on Thursday with Russians Daniil Medvedev and Andrey Rublev, currently ranked world number five and six respectively, yet to officially respond.

The same applies to leading women's players such as Belarusian duo Aryna Sabalenka, the third-ranked Australian Open champion, and former world number one Victoria Azarenka.

However, Russian Tennis Federation president Shamil Tarpischev earlier this month said that Rublev, 2021 silver medallist Karen Khachanov as well as women's 15th-ranked Liudmila Samsonova will not play at the Olympics.

Sabalenka has also said she will not take part in the Paris Olympics.

"Especially with all the struggles I've been struggling with the last months, I feel I have to take care of my health," Sabalenka told reporters last week. "It's too much for the scheduling and I made the decision to take care of my health."

To be invited to the Games as a "neutral individual athlete", competitors first have to satisfy their individual federation's qualifying criteria.

Then they are subject to checks over any indication they may have supported the war in Ukraine or have links with their country's military.

"I don't put a time on myself, I just know that if I execute and run the race that I've trained [and] prepared for, that the time comes with it," Richardson said. In the U.S trials, Richardson was slow off the blocks to quickly gained the pace to beat Melissa Jefferson, who came second in 10.80 and Twanisha Terry, who finished third in 10.89 seconds.

A total of 14 Russian and 11 Belarusian athletes were included on Saturday by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) on an initial list of "Individual Neutral Athletes" (AINs) eligible to compete in the Paris Games.&nbsp;

The athletes had to qualify for the Games and pass a double check, first by the international sports federations and then by the IOC, to prove they did not actively support the war in Ukraine or have any links with their countries' armies.&nbsp;

The athletes named on Saturday compete in four disciplines.

Sixteen are wrestlers. The IOC has also approved two weightlifters, three trampoline gymnasts and four road cyclists, including Aleksandr Vlasov, who was fourth in the 2021 Giro.&nbsp;

"Our cyclists passed the 'test'," Vyacheslav Ekimov, the President of the Russian Cycling Federation told Russia's state-run TASS news agency.

"The IOC allowed us to the Olympics, although I did not expect a different development. As for Vlasov, despite all his past statements, I think he will participate in the Olympics. And with great pleasure." Ekimov said.

The President of the Russian Trampolining Federation, Nikolai Makarov told TASS he was not entirely happy.

"The fact that the IOC has decided to admit Angela Bladtseva to the Olympics is very good news," he said.

"But I don't understand why another one of our contenders for the only ticket - Yana Lebedeva - is not on the list. I hope that her name will be on the next list."

Saturday's IOC statement also listed taekwondo, but that section included no names.&nbsp;

"It is absolutely true - none of our taekwondists will perform at the Olympic Games in Paris," Vadim Ivanov, Russia's taekwondo head coach told the state-run RIA Novosti news agency.

After initially banning the two countries' athletes from world sport following Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, the IOC adjusted their regulations to allow their participation, under a neutral banner, subject to strict conditions and excluding team events.&nbsp;

Last March, the IOC said it was expecting 36 Russians and 22 Belarussians at the Paris Games "according to the most probable scenario", and a "maximum" of 55 and 28 respectively.&nbsp;

That would be far fewer than the 330 Russians and 104 Belarusians that took part in the last Games in Tokyo in 2021.

The IOC will update its list as the final qualifying results come in.

There will be no track and field athletes. World Athletics has banned all Russians and Belarusians.

Other sports have reinstated them so late that their presence is uncertain.&nbsp;

<h2>- Opening ceremony -</h2>

On Friday, Yuliya Efimova, who has three Olympic breaststroke medals, became the first Russian swimmer to be granted neutral status for the Games although she has not yet swum a qualifying time. She also said she did not yet have a visa to travel to France.

While Moscow has finally decided not to boycott the Paris Games, some athletes may opt to. Russia's gymnasts have said they will refuse to take part.

The neutral athletes will neither take part in the opening ceremony on the Seine nor appear in the official medal table.&nbsp;

In March, the IOC awarded them a dedicated flag, stamped with the letters "AIN" on an apple-green background, as well as a short composition without words, which will serve as their anthem if they win an Olympic title.&nbsp;

At the same time, the IOC &nbsp;set up the Individual Neutral Athlete Eligibility Review Panel (AINERP) to help decide which athletes to invite.

The expert panel "has been able to benefit from new information from various sources, in particular official lists of athletes affiliated to sports clubs of the armed and security forces, published on official websites in Russia and Belarus", said the IOC.&nbsp;

Tennis great Rafael Nadal has announced that he will be skipping next month's Wimbledon to focus on the Paris Olympics. Nadal said he did not want to change surfaces, especially since he was still returning to full fitness after injuries kept him on the sidelines for a long time.&nbsp;

Nadal took to social media to inform about his decision, a day after Spanish Tennis Federation (RFET) announced that the 22-time Grand Slam winner was pairing with young sensation, Carlos Alcaraz for doubles at the Olympics.&nbsp;&nbsp;

"During my post match press conference at Roland Garros I was asked about my summer calendar and since then I have been practicing on clay. It was announced yesterday that I will play at the summer Olympics in Paris, my last Olympics," said Nadal.&nbsp;

"With this goal, we believe that the best for my body is not to change surface and keep playing on clay until then. It’s for this reason that I will miss playing at the Championships this year at Wimbledon."&nbsp;

<h2>Nadal's injury woes</h2>

Nadal has been struggling with injuries for the last two years which has limited his game time. Since January last year, he has only played 15 matches as a hip injury and muscle tear have kept him in rehabilitation.&nbsp;

He returned to action on his favourite surface - clay, playing at Barcelona and Madrid Masters before also giving a go in Rome. After decent outings in the two tournaments, Nadal arrived in Roland Garros to face Alexander Zverev in the first round.&nbsp;

Despite giving a good account of himself, Nadal went down in straight sets against the German. After the match, Nadal said he was&nbsp;'100 per cent sure' if he would be returning to the French Open next year.&nbsp;

"It is difficult for me to talk. I don't know if it is the last time that I am going to be here in front of you. I'm not 100 per cent sure but if it's the last time, I enjoyed it," said Nadal in the post-match interview.&nbsp;

Rafael Nadal REVEALS his Wimbledon and Paris Olympics plans post French Open exit

Spain's Rafael Nadal and Carlos Alcaraz will team up to play doubles at this year's Olympic Games in Paris, the Royal Spanish Tennis Federation (RFET) said on Wednesday (Jun 12).

Nadal won an Olympic gold medal in 2008, but the Paris Games will be Alcaraz's first as he returns to Roland Garros where he was crowned&nbsp;French Open champion&nbsp;on Sunday.

Nadal's participation was up in the air with the 14-times French Open champion still not at his best following injuries but national team coach David Ferrer said the 38-year-old would team up with 21-year-old Alcaraz.

"One pair, which I think everyone knows and was hoping for is Carlos Alcaraz and Rafael Nadal and the second pair is yet to be decided, it hasn't been 100 per cent confirmed yet," Ferrer told reporters.

"We'll wait a bit before announcing that. But Rafa and Carlos will be playing together in Paris," said&nbsp;Ferrer.

The other players selected are Pablo Carreno Busta and Alejandro Davidovich Fokina while Marcel Granollers, who is ranked world number two in doubles, is also in the squad.

Serbian long jumper&nbsp;Ivana&nbsp;Spanovic said she is hoping to finally secure an elusive Olympic gold medal at her fifth Games in Paris later this year and produce a fitting climax to the story of her career. Spanovic has had a few near misses on sport's biggest stage, claiming bronze at the Rio Olympics in 2016 and finishing fourth at the Tokyo Games with a best effort of 6.91 metres.

The 34-year-old has been successful in every other major event she has competed in, winning gold at the World Championships, World Indoor Championships, European Championships, European Indoor Championships and Diamond League.

"Being a part of the Serbian Olympic team for the fifth time makes me extremely proud, and this Olympics should be, so to speak, perhaps the last test in that arena," Spanovic told Reuters. "Actually, not perhaps the last, but indeed the last test in the arena, but surely&nbsp;some of my highest ambitions of completing my entire story."

<h2>LONG JUMP AMENDMENT</h2>

Should Spanovic return for a sixth Olympic Games in Los Angeles in 2028, she could find herself competing in a markedly different long jump event. Governing body World Athletics is set to trial an amendment which involves introducing a take-off zone where jumps would be measured from an athlete's take-off to landing position, getting rid of foul jumps to make the event more appealing to fans.

The proposal has been met with criticism from some athletes, with Greek reigning Olympic and world outdoor champion Miltiadis Tentoglou saying he would quit the event if it is passed.

Spanovic said she was also not a fan of the proposal, adding: "Many things are changing, mostly because&nbsp;of TV shows, minutes, and attractions. While we support efforts to increase the sport's popularity, there are alternative ways (to do that).

"We are definitely not in favour of changing the fundamental beauty and value of a particular sport or discipline in that way, in my opinion, as there is no point. "The whole allure and fascination, rests in the fact that someone will set a world record or succeed or fail based on accuracy. I could have been an Olympic champion and a two-time or three-time world champion, but I had a minimal foul, so I wasn't."

Spanovic also weighed in on World Athletics' decision to award $50,000 each to the gold medallists at the Paris Games, saying it could be a boon to self-funded athletes. "I believe it is a nice kind of reward (and a way)&nbsp;to recognise the hard work and dedication of the athletes, teams, and individuals who invest all of their resources to achieving that common goal," she added.

Neeraj Chopra is gearing up for the Doha Diamond League, on Friday (May 10). However, his focus remains on the big prize -- i.e. the forthcoming Paris Olympics Games. The mega event will kick off on July 26 and all eyes will be on Neeraj to replicate his Tokyo 2020 heroics, where he rose to fame and became a household name with a gold medal in the men's javelin event.

As he continues to prepare for Paris 2024, Neeraj opined that the key to success for Indian athletes in the showpiece event, in July-August, will be maintaining their self-belief. It is to be noted that the European athletes had won 15 of the last 16 gold medals in the men's javelin event before Neeraj scripted history with a throw of 87.58 metres at the Tokyo Games in 2021. Thus, he became the first Asian man to clinch an Olympic javelin title. This time around, he will have to cope with the pressure to match his past success. However,&nbsp;Neeraj feels self-belief will be vital for his success, as well as for the entire Indian contingent&nbsp;in Paris.

<h2>'Anything is possible in Paris'</h2>

In an interview with Sports Authority of India (SAI) media, Neeraj said, "There was a time when I wasn't even sure of qualifying for the world championships, but see how times have changed."
&nbsp;
"In Budapest last year, we had three Indians (out of the top six) in the finals and that's made us believe we're no less than the Europeans, who have dominated world javelin for so long. We have to take this Budapest belief forward and in Paris anything is possible."

The 26-year-old will be joined by compatriot Kishore Jena in Paris, while DP Manu also has a chance of qualifying for this year's Olympics.&nbsp;

Thus, India has seen a rise in the number of javelin stars ever since Neeraj's Tokyo feat, proving that the belief and confidence among Indian athletes to conquer any sport is&nbsp;on the rise.

Paris 2024: Neeraj Chopra says belief key to success for Indian athletes in Olympics

The Olympic flame, lit last month in Greece, the birthplace of the ancient Olympics, will be reaching French soil&nbsp;at Marseille's Old Port on Wednesday (May 8), amid heightened security. The torch arrives 79 days before the Paris 2024 Games opening ceremony and presents the first biggest security challenge to the French authorities.&nbsp;&nbsp;

As many as 150,000 people are expected to welcome the Olympics flame, according to a Reuters report. Fireworks and a free concert will form part of the programme which will be broadcast live on French TV. Keeping in mind the large public presence, 6,000 law enforcement officers have been pressed into service.&nbsp;

Four-time Olympic medal-winning swimmer Florent Manaudou will have the honour of being the first torch bearer during the event.&nbsp;

"It's something we've been waiting for a very long time," chief organiser Tony Estanguet said Monday, referring to the 100 years since Paris last staged the Games. &nbsp;"The Games are coming home."

<h2>Flame lit in Greece</h2>

The torch for the 2024 Paris Olympics was lit on April 16, marking the final&nbsp;stretch of the preparations for the Games.&nbsp;The choreographed ceremony was inspired by the traditions and values of ancient Greece.

Greek actress Mary Mina played the part of the head priestess and lit the torch using a backup flame instead of a parabolic mirror due to cloudy skies, for the start of a relay in Greece and France.

The ceremony took place after French President Emmanuel Macron said backup plans were in place to relocate the opening ceremony in case of increased terror threats.&nbsp;

“If we think there are risks, depending on our analysis of the context, we have fallback scenarios. There are plans B and C and we are preparing them in parallel," said Macron in a television interview.&nbsp;

“We’ll be analysing the situation in real-time and preparing a ceremony that would be limited to Trocadéro, where we wouldn’t use the whole of the Seine, or even a ceremony that would bring the public to the Stade de France, which is what has been done traditionally,” Macron added.&nbsp;

The organisers have planned a 'world first' opening ceremony, scheduled for July 26, when over 300,000 people are expected to watch an armada of boats carrying national teams down the Seine River.

The Olympic flame, lit last month in Greece, the birthplace of the ancient Olympics, will be reaching French soil at Marseille's Old Port on Wednesday (May 8), amid heightened security. The torch arrives 79 days before the Paris 2024 Games opening ceremony and presents the first biggest security challenge to the French authorities. As many as 150,000 people are expected to welcome the Olympics flame, according to a Reuters report. Fireworks and a free concert will form part of the programme which will be broadcast live on French TV. Keeping in mind the large public presence, 6,000 law enforcement officers have been pressed into service. Four-time Olympic medal-winning swimmer Florent Manaudou will have the honour of being the first torch bearer during the event. "It's something we've been waiting for a very long time," chief organiser Tony Estanguet said Monday, referring to the 100 years since Paris last staged the Games. "The Games are coming home." Fears over France's new €350 million anti-drone system failing to distinguish between unmanned terrorist aircraft and air conditioners have surfaced, raising concerns for the 500,000 spectators scheduled for the Paris Olympics.

According to The Times, the Parade system, which is hailed as critical to the fight against terror at the Games, was not as perfect as it seemed during a recent round of testing.

Reportedly, it can identify one out of every three drones in densely populated urban areas, but only up to 800 metres away. The system also misidentified air conditioning unit propellers as drones, a person familiar with the test told The Times.

A representative for Thales, which created Parade, said the technology, which is based on 'advanced processing algorithms', 'demonstrated its relevance' during the 2023 Rugby World Cup.

"Given the stakes involved, it is normal that the development of these algorithms and the fine-tuning of these sensors is requiring some effort and time, but the most important thing is to be ready for the Olympic Games 2024 with a system that armed forces operators have fully adopted," they added.

With the opening ceremony less than three months away, France has had to boost its much-vaunted 'Parade' kit with systems that reportedly involve people and technology from the Royal Air Force. The Parade system received a €350 million tender from the French defence procurement agency to create an anti-drone system in 2022.

The Paris 2024 Olympic Games will be held from July 26 to August 11, 2024, and will transform Paris into the world's centre of sport, among other things. Furthermore, there are predictions that the opening ceremony would be a star-studded affair, with around 10,500 participants disembarking from their boats and marching towards the ceremony location in Paris, France.

The 2024 Olympics opening ceremony will be held in Trocadéro Plaza, overlooking Paris' renowned Eiffel Tower. The last portion of the programme will take place when over 10,000 athletes disembark from boats and arrive at the location.

Paris Olympics defence system blunders: Air conditioner mistaken for drones

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) unveiled its largest refugee Olympic team to date for the Paris 2024 games, with 36 athletes from 11 different countries. The athletes, from countries including Syria, Sudan, Iran and Afghanistan, will compete across 12 sports in Paris, the third time such a team has formed for the Summer Olympics. But reports of doping seems to affect the game's spirit.

US track and field star Carl Lewis has pleaded that Noah Lyles be given some leeway as he heads into the Paris Olympics as a hot sprint favourite with a potential eye on four gold medals.

Lyles added another gold to his trophy cabinet by anchoring the US team to victory in the men's 4x100m on Sunday at the World Athletics relays in Nassau, where American quartets won four of five events raced as Olympic qualifiers.

The 26-year-old ensured he would be going to Paris with a target on his back after winning golds in the 100, 200 and 4x100m relay at last year's world championships in Budapest.

He followed up with two silvers at the world indoors in Glasgow in February, firstly beaten by teammate Christian Coleman in the 60m and then as a controversial last-minute member of the 4x400m relay team.

That call-up received wide criticism, with allegations of favouritism levelled at Lyles, even from teammate Fred Kerley.

But Lewis, one of the most decorated Olympian athletes with nine Summer Games golds, said that should now be treated as water under the bridge.

"I hope that he ignores it and moves on. All Noah's doing is what you're asking. He's a good kid, he's going to do very well," Lewis told a small group of journalists in Nassau.

"I don't have a problem with someone saying 'I want to win another gold medal for America'.

"I don't want him to get bogged down by silliness. It really is silly.

"It's not fair. He doesn't deserve it, let him do his thing."

Among Lewis' nine Olympic medals was a tally of four at the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles when he won both sprints, was a member of the winning 4x100m relay team and also claimed victory in the long jump.

Thoughts of Lyles having a tilt at emulating a four-gold haul in Paris left Lewis musing.

"Trust me, it's hard enough to win three, period!" he said.

"It's really, really hard to do it. Let him focus on that. And if the relay pans out, that could be wonderful for the sport."

<h2>- Open field in the 100m -</h2>

But Lewis warned that recent changing faces in the 100m champion's chair meant there would be no shoo-in for victory in the blue riband event.

"Anyone can win it!" said the American who won a second 100m Olympic gold in Seoul in 1988 after Ben Johnson tested positive for doping, as well as three world titles (1983, 1987 -- again promoted due to Johnson's doping -- &nbsp;1991).

While Lyles won in Budapest last year, Kerley won at the Eugene worlds the year before, Italy's Marcell Jacobs having claimed the Olympic title and Coleman the 2019 world championships in Doha.

There was no sight of Coleman or Kerley in Nassau, but Jacobs joined Lyles in action at the Thomas A.Robinson Stadium in the capital of the Bahamas.

"You want to be on the team for the Olympics, you should be here," the outspoken Lewis said.

As for Lyles, the 62-year-old said: "Well, he's here and he should be. I think he understands it. He's running technically the best right now. That's why he's winning and he's doing a good job.

"I think the sport needs someone to be dominant... because the public like to attach to someone.

"When they win they're happy, when they lose they're sad. They want to go with the emotion of people. Right now there's no emotion to it, it's just like, who's going to win."

Lewis, one of only six Olympic athletes who&nbsp;won a gold medal in the same individual event&nbsp;in four consecutive Olympic Games -- in his case the long jump -- also warned against weight of expectation on a single athlete raising track and field's profile in general.

"It's much bigger than him and I don't think it's fair to be it on athletes," he said of Lyles, using Jamaican sprinting legend Usain Bolt as a comparison.

"Usain did a tremendous job but he didn't grow the sport," he said. "As much as he did, as big as he was, he still didn't grow the sport, sport financially went down during his tenure."

Paris Olympics 2024: 'Let him focus,' says Carl Lewis on sprint gold favourite Noah Lyles

New Zealand secured double glory at the Singapore Sevens on Sunday, winning both the men's and women's tournaments to signal their Olympic intent with the Paris Games fast approaching.

New Zealand's men held off a determined challenge from Ireland to win 17-14 while their women's team surged to a 31-21 victory over Australia.

New Zealand raced into an early 10-0 lead in the men's final with tries by Leroy Carter and Fehi Fineanganofo but Gavin Mullin narrowed the deficit for the Irish just before the interval.

Dylan Collier restored New Zealand's 10-point cushion in the second half but Harry McNulty's response set up a tense finale.

The All Blacks held on for their second series win in a row after their success at Hong Kong last month.

New Zealand forward Tone Ng Shiu said his team were building momentum for the sevens series grand final in Madrid and the Paris Olympics in July.

"We started off slow in the world series this year but now we're just building up to the Olympics, taking it one tournament at a time," he said. "Two wins in a row -- you've got to be happy with that,” added Ng Shiu, who was in the New Zealand side that took the silver medal at the Tokyo Olympics.

"We know there's a bit of pressure to get that gold medal.

"We tried two times and we weren't quite there. So hopefully we can embrace the pressure at the next tournament and build for the Olympics."

Argentina were crowned men's series winners after they recovered from a 10-point deficit to beat South Africa 14-10 in the fifth-place playoff.

The South Americans won tournaments earlier this season in Cape Town, Perth and Vancouver to top the table with 106 points, two points ahead of the second-placed Irish.

Great Britain bounced back from a heart-breaking 15-12 extra-time loss to Ireland in the semi-finals to trounce Australia 29-7 in the third-place match.

The result saw GB leapfrog the United States for eighth place in the league standings and secured their status as a core team in next season’s world series.

"To be in that top eight in Madrid secures our programme's funding for another year," said GB captain Robbie Fergusson. "That means the boys have jobs next year, it means we can have contracts. It means everything," said the Scot.

"Nobody gave us a hope-in-hell chance this weekend of pushing the USA out of the top eight and taking that spot.

"But we had total belief in our group and we did something special this weekend and hopefully we can kickstart a special few months now heading into the Olympics."

Argentina, Ireland and Great Britain will be joined in the grand final by New Zealand, Australia, Fiji, France and South Africa.

The United States, Spain, Samoa and Canada finished outside the top eight and will face four teams from the challenger series in a promotion-relegation event in Madrid to determine next season's core teams.

In the women's tournament, New Zealand clinched top spot in the standings after a hat-trick of tries by Michaela Blyde helped them to a convincing victory over Australia.

In a clash between the top two teams, the Black Ferns trailed 14-5 late in the first half but scored four tries to win their fourth straight tournament after victories in Vancouver, Los Angeles and Hong Kong.

France finished third in Singapore and in the standings after a 29-7 victory over Fiji.

Rugby: New Zealand touch peak form with twin wins at Singapore 7s as Paris Games looms

Paris 2024 is getting ready to face an unprecedented challenge in terms of cybersecurity, with organisers expecting a huge pressure on the Games this summer. Organised crime, activists and states will be the main threats during the July 26-Aug. 11&nbsp;Olympics&nbsp;and the Aug. 28-Sept. 8 Paralympics. Paris 2024, who have been working hand in hand with the French national agency for information security (ANSSI), and cybersecurity companies Cisco and Eviden are looking to limit the impact of cyber attacks.

"We can't prevent all the attacks, there will not be Games without attacks but we have to limit their impacts on the&nbsp;Olympics," Vincent Strubel, the director general of ANSSI, told reporters. "There are 500 sites, competition venues and local collectives, and we've tested them all."

Strubel is confident that Paris 2024, who will operate from a cybersecurity operation centre in a location that is being kept secret, will be ready. "The Games are facing an unprecedented&nbsp;level of threat, but we've also done an unprecedented amount of preparation work so I think we're a step ahead of the attackers," he said.

To make sure they are in the game, Paris 2024 have been paying "ethical hackers" to stress test their systems and have been using artificial intelligence to help them do a triage of the threats.

"AI helps us make the difference between a nuisance and a catastrophe," said Franz Regul, managing director for IT at Paris 2024. "We're expecting the number of cyber security event to be multiplied by 10 compared to Tokyo (in 2021)." "In terms of cybersecurity, four years is the equivalent of a century," Eric Greffier, head of partnerships at CISCO, explained.

Olympics: Paris 2024 getting ready to face an unprecedented challenge in terms of cybersecurity

Some 6,000 police will be deployed next month to secure the arrival of the Olympic torch from Greece in the French city of Marseille, Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin said Friday.

The extra officers will be mobilised on top of local firefighters and police, meaning security will be even tighter than when Pope Francis visited the city in September 2023.

The Olympic torch is to be handed over to French organisers in Athens on Friday before they bring it to Marseille on a French 19th-century sailing ship.

The three-mast Belem is to set sail on Saturday from Greece and breeze into the Old Port in France's second-largest city on the evening of May 8, with crowds of around 150,000 people expected to be watching.

Darmanin said an elite tactical unit, bomb disposal teams, nautical police officers and an anti-drone team would be in place to secure the Old Port.

He added that more than 1,000 boats that have signed up to sail with the Belem along the coastline before it arrives in port would all have been inspected and "demined" during the day.

The minister said there was "no specified threat" to the event, but that law enforcement was preparing for several hypothetical scenarios.

These included one linked to "radical Islamism", though "the far right and far left" could also pose a risk, he said.
