Scientists have warned that the&nbsp;'crossbreeding'&nbsp;between different viruses may lead to the emergence of a completely new, altered virus with potentially more threatening characteristics. Such viruses may even trigger another COVID-19-like pandemic, said the virologists from the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ). This natural evolution of viruses occurs as different&nbsp;virus&nbsp;species create new pathogens inside vertebrates.

“Using a new computer-assisted analysis method, we discovered 40 previously unknown nidoviruses in various vertebrates from fish to rodents, including 13 coronaviruses,”&nbsp;said DKFZ group leader Stefan Seitz.

<h2>The unexplored world&nbsp;of viruses</h2>

According to researchers, most&nbsp;of the&nbsp;viruses are still unknown to humans as scientific studies have focused more on viruses that cause diseases in humans, domestic animals and crops.

But, with the new AI-assisted method, scientists&nbsp;were able to&nbsp;peruse 300,000 data sets and&nbsp;could&nbsp;derive insightful data in one go.

<h2>What are Nidoviruses?</h2>

Nidoviruses consist of ribonucleic acid (RNA) and bear common characteristics that distinguish them from all other RNA viruses and document their relationship.

The researchers found that when host animals&nbsp;are infected&nbsp;with different viruses&nbsp;at the same time, a new virus may emerge altogether&nbsp;as a result of&nbsp;a recombination of viral genes.

Such evolution may lead the virus to cause fatal and dangerous diseases to the host animal.

“A&nbsp;genetic exchange, as we have found in fish viruses, will probably also occur in mammalian viruses,”&nbsp;explains Stefan Seitz.

The Kitum cave in Mount Elgon National Park, Kenya, is known as the world's deadliest cave. It's got some really dangerous viruses inside, like Ebola and Marburg. Experts are now worried that the Marburg virus might cause the next big outbreak, and the World Health Organization (WHO) issued a warning about it.

Marburg is an illness marked by bleeding and disruption of bodily functions.&nbsp; It can be deadly, with up to 88 per cent of people dying from it.

The virus spreads through contact with infected people's fluids, and even touching stuff like towels that they've used can pass it on. Plus, fruit bats, common in Africa, can carry the virus too, making it easier for it to spread.

The virus typically remains dormant for at least three weeks before symptoms appear in patients. However, the early signs often mimic those of malaria and Ebola.

Many infected people exhibit sunken eyes and blank facial expressions. In advanced stages, it can lead to bleeding from various body parts such as the vagina, eyes, nose, and gums. There are no vaccines against the virus, so doctors focus on treating symptoms with medications and fluids.

In 1980, during an exploration of Kitum Cave, a French engineer working at a nearby sugar mill accidentally came into contact with the Marburg virus, which causes severe tissue damage.&nbsp; He passed away shortly after being admitted to a hospital in Nairobi.

His rapid deterioration from the viral hemorrhagic fever was described in a book as resembling "the face detaching itself from the skull," with his facial features appearing to hang from the bone as the connective tissue dissolved. Years later, a Danish boy on vacation with his family also fell victim to a similar hemorrhagic virus known as Ravn and died.

According to government data, in 2023-24, 4009 children were adopted by families in India and abroad. In the 2018-19, 4027 children were adopted. Even after India took steps to speed up the child adoption process, the pandemic saw a decline in adoptions with 3,745 children being adopted in 2019-20, 3,559 adopted in 2020-21, 3,405 adopted in 2021-22, and 3,441 adopted in 2022-23. In-country and inter-country adoptions According to the data collected by the Central Adoption Resource Authority (CARA), out of 4,009 children adopted 3,560 were in-country adoptions and 449 were inter-country adoptions. The number of in-country adoptions was highest since 2015-16. Foster adoptions This year, apart from existing five types of adoption under the Juvenile Justice Act 2015 (amended in 2021) and Adoption Regulations 2022, CARA has introduced 'foster adoptions' as a category. Monday (Mar 11) is the fourth anniversary of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, which is the worst health crisis in more than a century. On March 11, 2020, the World Health Organization (WHO) had declared COVID-19 a global pandemic. Since then, millions died and even millions more are facing aftereffects of having been infected with the virus. The health infrastructure of almost all countries collapsed in combating the pandemic. Lockdowns, social distancing, isolation, and hand sanitisation became the news words of caution. Schools, colleges and most workplaces were shut at the peak of the pandemic. Various business sectors were affected which led to severe economic crises in major countries. People lost their loved ones, friends and acquaintances to the virus. So what went wrong - government response (in combating COVID-19), people's ignorance in adhering to safety measures, or a delay in declaring COVID-19 a health crisis? A rewind Let's go back in time to December 2019. People in China's Wuhan were getting infected with a mysterious type of pneumonia. These infections were later found to be cases of the suspected SARS Coronavirus. Dr Li Wenliang, a Chinese ophthalmologist, warned his colleagues about early COVID-19 cases in the city. Dr Li became the whistleblower of this pandemic but unfortunately died after getting infected with the virus. Also watch | COVID pandemic anniversary: How a virus led to collapse of global health system | WION Decodes × Most of the early cases in Wuhan were linked to the Huanan seafood market. The market became the epicentre of the virus which first started spreading outside China and then to the rest of the world. COVID-19 spreads easily from person to person, riding respiratory droplets in the air, killing some victims but leaving most to bounce back without much harm. At any moment, the virus can change to become more transmissible, more able to sidestep the immune system or more deadly. Initial response of countries When infections first started spreading outside China, a majority of the countries responded quickly through non-pharmaceutical interventions such as sanitising hands, maintaining social distancing and seeking medical help in case of any symptoms. Despite these interventions, there was a lack of public health infrastructure to treat the infected patients - hospital beds to accommodate patients, machinery to treat them, and medicines. Trust eroded in public health agencies. At the peak of the pandemic, medical workers including doctors, nurses and other staff were working round-the-clock, sometimes staying in hospitals for days. Massive protests were held in several countries due to their government's handling of the health crisis. Several ministers and political advisors were forced to step down. There was also growing anger over countries underreporting the number of deaths and cases. China faces global backlash China, where the pandemic originated, faced huge global backlash for not informing the world about the virus on time. The WHO sent a team of experts to Beijing to investigate the source of the virus. For a long time, China resisted demands from other countries to allow independent investigators on its soil to study COVID-19 origins. China already had deteriorated relations with the West over trade, technology, military and human rights. And the pandemic further worsened the relations. Also read | Pharma company AstraZeneca sued in UK for deaths due to vaccine-induced blood clots, says report A report by the New York Times (NYT) in 2021 said that Chinese officials also provided little data from samples that the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention took in December 2019 at the Huanan Seafood Market. Perhaps the provision of complete data here could have prevented COVID-19 from becoming the health crisis it is today. Vaccination and profiteering behind it Vaccination has become one of the most important aspects of combating COVID-19. Pharma giants started manufacturing vaccines of single and double doses. As vaccine manufacturing ramped up, developed and developing countries started delivering jabs to the poorest of countries. However, these consignments were not enough due to limited government budgets. Pharma giants including Pfizer, Moderna and BioNTech were accused of profiteering from vaccine manufacturing. A report by Oxfam International in 2021 said that Pfizer, BioNTech and Moderna were making combined profits of $65,000 every minute while the world's poorest countries remained unvaccinated. Also read | Research finds connection between long Covid brain fog and leaky blood vessels "These companies have sold the majority of doses to rich countries, leaving low-income countries out in the cold. Pfizer and BioNTech have delivered less than one per cent of their total vaccine supplies to low-income countries, while Moderna has delivered just 0.2 per cent. Meanwhile, 98 per cent of people in low-income countries have not been fully vaccinated," the report said. Still a health crisis In May last year, WHO's Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus announced that COVID-19 no longer constituted a public health emergency of international concern (PHEIC). “For more than a year, the pandemic has been on a downward trend, with population immunity increasing from vaccination and infection, mortality decreasing and the pressure on health systems easing,” Ghebreyesus said on May 5, adding, "It is therefore with great hope that I declare COVID-19 over as a global health emergency." It has been more than four years since the pandemic began. COVID-19 is still a health crisis and can worsen at any point in time. So will governments, and citizens be better prepared for such a health crisis in future? Or will this cycle of traumatic events start all over again?

Biological changes in babies born during the COVID-19 pandemic have astounded researchers. According to the study published in Allergy, Covid babies have an altered gut microbiome. It means the system of good and bad bacteria in their gut that aids digestion and removes harmful bacteria is slightly distinct in children entering their toddler and early childhood years. The study by the research team from the University of College Cork in Ireland analysed faecal samples of 351 Irish babies born in the first three months of the COVID-19 pandemic between March and May 2020. They compared these samples to those from the babies born before the pandemic. The research team found that these gut bacteria alterations meant that these Covid babies have a lower-than-expected rate of allergic conditions than babies born before the pandemic. Only five per cent of the Covid babies developed a food allergy by the age of one, compared to the 22.8 per cent seen in the pre-Covid babies. According to the researchers, the mothers have passed healthy microbes to their babies while pregnant. These babies gained additional microbes from the environment after they were born. The study also revealed that the Covid babies required fewer antibiotics to treat illness. Professor Jonathan Hourihane, the consultant paediatrician at Children's Health Ireland Temple Street and joint senior author, said, "This study offers a new perspective on the impact of social isolation in early life on the gut microbiome. Notably, the lower allergy rates among newborns during the lockdown could highlight the impact of lifestyle and environmental factors, such as frequent antibiotic use, on the rise of allergic diseases." Recently, parents were warned to look out for the latest symptoms of COVID-19 in babies. In the United States, scientists conducted research on the children who were diagnosed with the virus, reported Mail Online. They found that a "high proportion" of the children had increased levels of a biomarker linked with vascular trauma, a blood vessel injury. The study, published in the journal Blood Advances, analysed how coronavirus can alter children's cardiovascular health. The research team examined 50 paediatric patients hospitalised with the infection from April and July 2020. Dr David Teachey of the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia said, "Although most children with COVID-19 do not have severe disease, our study shows that there may be other effects of SARS-CoV-2 that are worthy of investigation." Bats, notorious carriers of deadly zoonotic diseases are everyone's nightmare, especially after the COVID-19 pandemic. However, as per recent research, they may also hold the key to understanding viral immunity.

A recent study by a Texas A&amp;M research team, published in the journal Cell Genomics, has revealed that certain bat species are naturally protected against the viruses they harbour — Ebola, COVID-19 etc. This, they reason is due to bats' unique immune genes, which are exchanged during seasonal mating swarms.

<h2>Evolutionary wonders</h2>

Dr Nicole Foley who along with Dr William Murphy, from the Texas A&amp;M School of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences (VMBS), spearheaded the research said: "Understanding how bats have evolved viral tolerance may help us learn how humans can better fight emerging diseases."

They believe that studying bats' viral tolerance could be crucial in preventing future global pandemics. Foley explains, "As genomicists, our work often lays the groundwork for research by scientists who study virus transmission directly. They may be developing vaccines for diseases or monitoring vulnerable animal populations. We all depend on each other to stay ahead of the next pandemic," she added.&nbsp;

"Several bat species are tolerant of viruses that are detrimental to human health, which means they become reservoirs for disease — they carry the viruses, but crucially they don't develop symptoms," noted Foley.

To unravel the mystery of bat immunity, the researchers focused on Myotis bats, a vast genus with over 140 species worldwide. These bats engage in swarming behaviour during mating.

"You can think of swarming behaviour like a social gathering; there’s lots of flight activity, increased communication and interspecies mingling; for bats, it's not unlike going to a club," said Foley.

However, the more than 100 species of the Myotis bat pose a challenge, as similar appearances and frequent hybridisation make species identification difficult.

Foley and Murphy, along with international partners from Ireland, France and Switzerland, sequenced the genomes of 60 Myotis bat species to map their evolutionary tree and identify genes involved in disease immunity.

<h2>Amazing find</h2>

Surprisingly, the researchers found that immune genes were among the most exchanged between species during swarming.&nbsp;

Foley explains that swarming may have evolved "to promote hybridisation, which helps spread beneficial immune gene variants more widely throughout the population."

This discovery raises new questions about the role of hybridisation in mammalian evolution. They are now investigating other instances of hybridisation in mammals to understand its impact on evolutionary history and genome organisation.

A recent study by a Texas A&M research team, published in the journal Cell Genomics, has revealed that certain bat species are naturally protected against the viruses they harbour — Ebola, COVID-19 etc. This, they reason is due to bats' unique immune genes, which are exchanged during seasonal mating swarms. Study links binge-watching to frequent night time urination Evolutionary wonders Dr Nicole Foley who along with Dr William Murphy, from the Texas A&M School of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences (VMBS), spearheaded the research said: "Understanding how bats have evolved viral tolerance may help us learn how humans can better fight emerging diseases." They believe that studying bats' viral tolerance could be crucial in preventing future global pandemics. Foley explains, "As genomicists, our work often lays the groundwork for research by scientists who study virus transmission directly. They may be developing vaccines for diseases or monitoring vulnerable animal populations. We all depend on each other to stay ahead of the next pandemic," she added. "Several bat species are tolerant of viruses that are detrimental to human health, which means they become reservoirs for disease — they carry the viruses, but crucially they don't develop symptoms," noted Foley. Also read | Can ADHD traits be a superpower? New study reveals they have evolutionary benefits To unravel the mystery of bat immunity, the researchers focused on Myotis bats, a vast genus with over 140 species worldwide. Amazing find Surprisingly, the researchers found that immune genes were among the most exchanged between species during swarming. Foley explains that swarming may have evolved "to promote hybridisation, which helps spread beneficial immune gene variants more widely throughout the population." This discovery raises new questions about the role of hybridisation in mammalian evolution. They are now investigating other instances of hybridisation in mammals to understand its impact on evolutionary history and genome organisation. (With inputs from agencies)

Bats, viruses, and immunity: Research reveals how bats could help prevent future pandemics

The World Health Organization chief fears plans for a global pandemic preparedness agreement will fall apart amid wrangling and disinformation, warning on Monday that future generations "may not forgive us".

Shaken by the COVID-19 pandemic, the WHO's 194 member states decided more than two years ago to start negotiating an international accord aimed at ensuring countries are better equipped to deal with the next health catastrophe, or to prevent it altogether.

The plan was to seal the agreement at the 2024 World Health Assembly, the WHO's decision-making body, which convenes on May 27.

But WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said the momentum had been slowed down by entrenched positions and "a torrent of fake news, lies, and conspiracy theories".

And he warned that if nobody is prepared to seize the initiative or give ground, the whole project risks going nowhere.

‘Future generations may not forgive us’: WHO chief warns as fate of global pandemic agreement hangs in balance

Experts have issued a severe warning about a new and concerning "global healthcare risk" related to COVID-19, stating that it could start a "heart failure pandemic". The rise in COVID-19&nbsp;cases, especially due to the new strain known as JN.1, could lead to potential heart issues, a new study by Japanese scientists has revealed.

Following a spike in Covid cases in several countries, including the US, UK, China, and India&nbsp;in recent weeks, largely due to the influx of a new strain JN.1, health experts have warned that this will increase the chances of potential heart issues for those who catch the disease.

Scientists from Japan's top research institute Riken issued the warning in a new report. They say the ACE2 receptors, which the coronavirus clings to within human cells, are 'very common' in the heart. This means many people who catch the virus may suffer from 'reduced cardiac function'.

The reason for this is still unclear. However, the report suggests the Covid pandemic might have changed things significantly. It warns that the number of those at risk of future heart failure due to 'persistent infection of SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) is expected to exponentially increase'.

The report states: "Even though conclusive clinical evidence that persistent SARS-CoV-2 infection is associated with declined cardiac function has not been reported so far, the proof-of-concept study of the possibility of SARS-CoV-2 persistent infection of the heart and the potential risk of opportunistic progression of heart failure should be validated by a three-dimensional human cardiac tissue model which would serve as the alarm bell for a global healthcare risk."

The latest warning comes with a sharp increase in Covid cases in several countries, including the US,&nbsp;as millions of people prepare to travel for the holiday season, with the fast-spreading JN.1 variant making up 44 per cent of all cases nationwide.

Health officials have warned that combined with a rising number of flu cases,&nbsp;this winter may see a significant increase in illness cases - especially ahead of crowded social events for New Year’s celebrations.
