The Pakistan High Commission here has lodged complaints of harassment with the external affairs ministry, which has assured them of an investigation, official sources said on Sunday and alleged that several Indian mission staffers in Islamabad have been severely &quot;harassed and intimidated&quot;.

&quot;Harassment is the new normal for Indian High Commission personnel in Islamabad. The High Commissioner&#39;s car was recently stopped by Pakistani agencies in the middle of a busy road to prevent him from attending an event,&quot; a source said.

Noting that the Pakistan high commission has brought to the MEA&quot;s notice some incidents of alleged harassment over the last few days, sources said there will no doubt be investigated.

&quot;India makes all efforts to provide a safe, secure and hospitable environment for diplomats to work in. Unfortunately, this cannot be said of Islamabad. The Indian High Commission in Pakistan has been facing tremendous harassment for long, particularly in the last year,&quot; the source said.

&quot;Aggressive surveillance, violation of physical space and tailing of officers in close and dangerous proximity is a perennial issue. Agency personnel keep shooting videos of the officers thrusting phones on their faces.&quot;

&quot;Obscene phone calls and messages are constantly received on phones. In view of such an atmosphere of intimidation, most families have returned to India and children have been withdrawn from schools,&quot; the source said.

In more trouble, over the last few months, several Indian High Commission staffers have been severely harassed and intimidated, the source said, adding that in one case an officer&#39;s home was broken into and a laptop stolen.

However, Indian diplomats chose to tackle this matter with quiet and persistent diplomacy rather than by airing issues in the media, the source said.

The strong reaction came after Pakistani newspaper Dawn quoted Pakistani officials of accusing India of harassing its diplomats and their families in the country and threatened to pull out the families if the intimidation did not stop.

A demarche was made to the Indian High Commission in Islamabad and the external affairs ministry in Delhi, a diplomatic source was quoted as saying by the Dawn.

However, sources here said India has repeatedly requested Pakistan to mutually ensure that High Commissions are allowed to do their job in an atmosphere free of harassment and intimidation, that staff be allowed to work and that construction projects get completed on time.

&quot;We would like to continue the fine tradition of allowing diplomats to do their jobs,&quot; the source said.

Sources also said that on February 16, the Indian High Commissioner met the Foreign Secretary of Pakistan to lodge a strong protest against multiple acts of hooliganism against Indian properties and personnel.

&quot;India&#39;s residential complex in Islamabad was raided by Pakistan agencies who expelled all Pakistani service providers and later disconnected power and water supply.

&quot;Despite the Foreign Secretary&#39;s assurance, the power supply was not restored for over two weeks. The Pakistan High Commission faces no such disruptions,&quot; the source said.

&nbsp;A senior European researcher has accused Pakistan of making moves to sell the disputed region of Gilgit-Baltistan to China in return for stacks of Renminbi (Chinese currency) and Yuan (basic unit of Chinese currency).

Participating in the 37th session of the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC), Senior Research Analyst at the European Foundation for South-Asian Studies Du&scaron;an Vejinovic said Friday, &quot;While Pakistan manifests itself as a self-styled advocate of the rights of the people of Jammu and Kashmir, the factual situation is, that it remains an illegal occupier of Jammu and Kashmir, which has deprived the people of their political and civil liberties.&quot;

&quot;Contrary to the country&#39;s diplomatic rhetoric, it is Pakistan which has denied the people of Jammu and Kashmir their fundamental human rights. Moreover, it is now aspiring to become a broker of Jammu and Kashmir, by negotiating the sale of Gilgit-Baltistan to Beijing, in return for stacks of Chinese Yuan,&quot; he added.

Demanding that the United Nations take appropriate action against Pakistan, Vejinovic said, &quot;Why is Pakistan allowed to infringe international law and make a mockery of this august institution? The United Nations is obliged to act, not only to ensure peace in South Asia, but more importantly, to maintain its own credibility and reinforce its authority.&quot;

Reminding the UNHRC that the UN&nbsp;resolutions of 1948 and 1949 had directed Pakistan to withdraw its troops from the state of Jammu and Kashmir by August 13, 1948, a perplexed Vejinovic asked what is preventing Islamabad from complying with a legally binding instruction issued more than 70 years ago.

Jammu and Kashmir has been an area of contention for both India and Pakistan ever since the nations were formed in 1947 with three battles having been fought between the two neighbours over it.

India has played a responsible role in the economic development of Afghanistan, the Trump administration said today noting that the trilateral India-Afghan-US cooperation is not aimed at Pakistan.

&quot;India, we&#39;ve seen over the last several years, play a responsible role in the economic development and reconstruction of Afghanistan. And that role has been appreciated by the government of Afghanistan,&quot; senior US diplomat for South and Central Asia, Alice Wells, told a Washington audience.

Early this month, Wells was in Kabul to attend the Kabul process meeting. On the sidelines of it, she participated in the India-US-Afghanistan trilateral, which again raised eyebrows in Pakistan.

The trilateral meeting, she said, was to review how the three countries can better work together on development trade and investment priorities.

&quot;But that does not imply that we would support or think that there&#39;s any manipulation of Afghanistan so that it can be used against Pakistan,&quot; Wells said in response to a question at the US Institute of Peace, a US-Congress supported top American think-tank.

Pakistan, she said, has an important role to play in a peace process, and in stabilising Afghanistan.

&quot;We believe that Pakistan can help change and shape the calculus of the Taliban. We are engaged with Pakistan on how we can work together as well as address Pakistan&#39;s legitimate concerns through a negotiated process,&quot; she said.

The spokesperson of &#39;Free Karachi&#39; campaign and former convener of Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) Nadeem Nusrat said that Mohajirs have welcomed <a href="http://www.wionews.com/south-asia/pakistan-harbous-un-designate-terrorists-india-slams-pakistan-at-unhrc-35320" target="_blank">India&#39;s statement on their atrocities committed by Pakistan</a> at the United Nations Human Rights session.

Highlighting the atrocities committed in Sindh, Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Nusrat said that the inclusion of Sindh in India&#39;s statement on human rights violations is an important and encouraging development for nearly 70 million Mohajirs.

&quot;The people of Karachi and Urban Sindh are grateful to the Indian Government for raising the voice on the plight of Mohajirs in Pakistan,&quot; he said.

Nusrat further said that Sindh, especially in Karachi and urban centres of Sindh province, had been neglected previously by the world community while highlighting the persecution of ethnic groups in Pakistan.

More than 25,000 Mohajirs have been brutally killed by the Pakistan Army and paramilitary operations in Karachi since 1992. Enforced disappearances, abductions and extrajudicial killings are on the rise in Karachi since the latest phase of operation in 2013.

The term &#39;Mohajir&#39; is used to describe the Urdu-speaking immigrants, who left India in 1947 and came to Pakistan. A large chunk of them settled in the Sindh province of Pakistan.

Highlighting the issue of terrorism, Nusrat said that religious extremism, fanaticism and terrorism is being nourished by Pakistan which has put peace and security of the region at stake.

&quot;The Pakistani soil has been used to plan and launch major terror attacks in the region. The providers and facilitators of terror sanctuaries in Pakistan must be held accountable by the UN and all peace-loving nations,&quot; he asserted.

He further added that the &#39;Free Karachi&#39; campaign has been drawing world&#39;s attention towards the state atrocities of Pakistan on Mohajirs, Balochs, Pashtuns and other religious minorities.

Nusrat stressed that the &#39;Free Karachi&#39; team is approaching international community, lawmakers, decision-making bodies, human rights groups and is getting tremendous support from all quarters.

He urged all the major regional powers of South Asia and international powers to put pressure on Pakistan to end crimes against humanity in Karachi and urban centers of Sindh along with Balochistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA).

The &#39;Free Karachi&#39; campaign was launched on January 15 on the eve of Martin Luther King Day to raise global awareness on human rights violations in Karachi and Urban Sindh.

'Mohajirs welcome India's statement against Pak in UN human rights session'

Speaking at the 37th session of UN human rights council (UNHRC) in Geneva, Switzerland, Mini Devi Kumam, Second Secretary, India&#39;s Permanent Mission has lashed at Pakistan for sheltering UN-designated terrorists.

Calling Pakistan a failed state, Kumam said, &quot;In gross violation of UN Security Council resolution 1267, the UN designated terrorists like Hafiz Mohammed Saeed are freely operating with State support, and the UN designated entities are being politically mainstreamed in Pakistan.&quot;

She also highlighted&nbsp;the depressing state of minorities in the country, enforced disappearances and unlawful killing of political dissidents by Pakistan security forces.&nbsp;

She said &quot;We urge the Council to call on Pakistan to stop targeting political dissidents and legitimate criticism in Sindh, Baluchistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and to stop torture, enforced disappearances and unlawful killing, including that of journalists and activists by its security agencies. Pakistan should also prosecute all perpetrators of such crimes&quot;.

She also took on Pakistan for its continued support to cross-border terrorism in India.

&quot;We await credible action by the Government of Pakistan to bring all those involved in the 2008 Mumbai attacks and the 2016 Pathankot and Uri attacks to justice,&quot; she said.

Thrashing Pakistan for its lecture to India about the protection of human rights, she said, &quot;Even as terrorists thrive in Pakistan and roam its streets with impunity, we have heard it lecture about the protection of human rights in India.

The World does not need lessons on democracy and human rights from a country whose own situation is charitably described as a failed state&quot;.

Pakistan harbours UN designate terrorists: India slams Pakistan at UNHRC

India&rsquo;s relationship with China has never been an easy one with frequent border incursions along the 3500-kilometre border between the two Asian neighbours and tensions on the Doklam plateau. But, there&rsquo;s something interesting happening. Beijing has just reached out across the fence to New Delhi to ask for a dance. But like the proverbial crocodile and monkey in the Indian collection of children&#39;s stories, the Panchatantra, will India be the crocodile or the monkey? Will it glide into a waltz with the other big Asian superpower? Or will it first wait for its favourite song to play?&nbsp;
Senior Foreign Editor Padma Rao examines the question.

Whether it is the tense standoff between the two Asian superpowers on the Doklam highland or the frequent forays by the People&#39;s Liberation Army (PLA) into Indian territory, China has always employed a tone that resembles a patronizing, scolding, relative towards a poor country cousin &ndash; in this case, India.&nbsp;

Perhaps for the first time in the history of India-China relations, China&#39;s foreign minister Wang Yi struck an astounding note on the subject of India. 2017 had been a particularly tense year between the two neighbors. At his annual press conference, the Chinese foreign minister was asked what he thought of China&#39;s relations with India.&nbsp;

Here&rsquo;s what he said:

&quot;Despite some tests and difficulties, the China-India relationship continues to grow. Chinese and Indian leaders have developed a strategic vision for the future of our relations.&rdquo;

Come again? That was the reaction Mr Yi&rsquo;s remarks evoked across the border, even as India was waking up to a new day of &mdash; possibly &mdash; fresh tensions with China over some border or land issue or another. But there were more surprises in store. While acknowledging that there were contentious issues, Mr Yi said, &lsquo;&rsquo;China is upholding its rights and legitimate interests and taking care to preserve the relationship with India.&rdquo;

Then gushed forth what could have been written off as stream-of-consciousness-babble, were it not for the fact that this was the foreign minister of the mighty People&rsquo;s Republic of China speaking in public, to the media. In essence, here&rsquo;s what he said:&nbsp;

-- Chinese and Indian leaders have a strategic vision for the future of their relations.

-- China and India must do everything to support each other and avoid mutual suspicion.
&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;
-- With political trust, not even the Himalayas can stop our friendly exchanges.

-- Our common interests far outweigh our frictions.

-- If China and India are united, one plus one will become eleven instead of two.
&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;
-- Dragon and elephant must not fight, but dance with each other.

Babble or brotherhood?&nbsp;Such ardent declarations of eternal friendship from China? &nbsp;By now, either most readers have moist eyes or&nbsp;are rolling them at what expansionist China could possibly have meant by &#39;&#39;united&#39;&#39; India and China and the startling mathematics behind &quot;one plus one will become eleven&quot;. &nbsp;But look at it with a cool head and consider what it could possibly mean.&nbsp;

No matter what the foreign minister also said about China&rsquo;s Belt-and-Road-Initiative, China&#39;s brand of debt-trap diplomacy that has ensnared nearly 100 countries is under sharp criticism. Europe has refused to be part of the Silk Road. India, the United States, Japan and - possibly Australia have come together in a strategic grouping known as the &#39;Quad&#39; to counter China&#39;s aggressive land-grabbing &ndash; both in the Indian Ocean and the South China Sea. And now, &nbsp;China&rsquo;s closest trade partner, the United States, has issued dire warnings.

Trump speaking

The Trump administration is preparing to throttle Chinese investments in the United States and slam tariffs on imports from China. &nbsp;It is going to act firmly against intellectual property theft by China. And most of all, President Trump plans to cut the 620 billion dollar annual trade deficit between the two countries in half and create 2 million jobs for Americans in America.&nbsp;

China is finding itself increasingly isolated in the international arena. India&rsquo;s 1.2 billion-strong market beckons as an attractive alternative, despite India&#39;s stern measures against dumping by Chinese companies. And India is fast emerging as a close strategic ally to the United States than China, especially in matters Pakistan and Afghanistan. What better time for an invitation to the dance floor to New Delhi than now? However, and in the corridors of South Block, Indian diplomats are nobody&rsquo;s fools. They will have long read the fine-print and will tango only if it&rsquo;s a dance between equal partners.

But look at it with a cool head and consider what it could possibly mean. No matter what the foreign minister also said about China’s Belt-and-Road-Initiative, China's brand of debt-trap diplomacy that has ensnared nearly 100 countries is under sharp criticism. Europe has refused to be part of the Silk Road. India, the United States, Japan and - possibly Australia have come together in a strategic grouping known as the 'Quad' to counter China's aggressive land-grabbing – both in the Indian Ocean and the South China Sea. And now, China’s closest trade partner, the United States, has issued dire warnings. Trump speaking The Trump administration is preparing to throttle Chinese investments in the United States and slam tariffs on imports from China. It is going to act firmly against intellectual property theft by China. And most of all, President Trump plans to cut the 620 billion dollar annual trade deficit between the two countries in half and create 2 million jobs for Americans in America. China is finding itself increasingly isolated in the international arena. India’s 1.2 billion-strong market beckons as an attractive alternative, despite India's stern measures against dumping by Chinese companies. And India is fast emerging as a close strategic ally to the United States than China, especially in matters Pakistan and Afghanistan. What better time for an invitation to the dance floor to New Delhi than now? However, and in the corridors of South Block, Indian diplomats are nobody’s fools. They will have long read the fine-print and will tango only if it’s a dance between equal partners.

Brotherhood or babble? Analysing the Chinese foreign minister's speak on India

India on Thursday highlighted human rights violations by Pakistan at the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC).

India&#39;s response came after Pakistan raised the issue of human rights violations in Jammu and Kashmir.

Mini Devi Kumam, Second Secretary, India&#39;s Permanent Mission at UNHRC, said it had become a habit of Pakistan to misuse the UNHRC platform to make misleading references about internal matters pertaining to Jammu and Kashmir.

&quot;This Council should be mindful that the dubious concern for human rights is coming from a country, which has systematically abused and violated the human rights of the people in Baluchistan, Sindh, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa as well as Pakistan Occupied Kashmir,&quot; Kumam said at the 37th Session of UNHRC.

She added that &quot;Pakistan has long been attempting to mask its territorial ambitions and use of terrorism as a state policy under the guise of concern for human rights&quot;.

The Indian representative also told the UNHRC that Pakistan was committing grossest violation of human rights by exporting terrorism to Jammu and Kashmir.

&quot;Terrorism is the grossest violation of human rights. The real problem in the State of Jammu and Kashmir is terrorism, which has constantly received sustenance from Pakistan and territories under its control,&quot; Kumam asserted.

India also urged the UNHRC to call on Pakistan to end cross-border infiltration, to dismantle special terrorist zones, safe havens and sanctuaries, and to take verifiable actions, including on terror financing.

The Indian representative also told the UNHRC that Pakistan should provide freedom to the people of Pakistan occupied Kashmir by ending its illegal and forcible occupation.

While highlighting the misuse of blasphemy laws in Pakistan, India said Islamabad should end harassment of minorities; place procedural and institutional safeguards to prevent its misuse.

Kumam also demanded that Pakistan should end forced conversions and marriages of minorities; including Hindu, Sikh and Christian women, and prosecute all such cases.

India also highlighted enforced disappearances and unlawful killing of political dissidents by the Pakistani security forces.

&quot;We urge the Council to call on Pakistan to stop targeting political dissidents and legitimate criticism in Sindh, Baluchistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and to stop torture, enforced disappearances and unlawful killing, including that of journalists and activists by its security agencies. Pakistan should also prosecute all perpetrators of such crimes,&quot; Kumam said.

India also demanded end of sectarian violence, systemic persecution and attacks on Muslim minorities, such as Shia, Ahmadiyas , Ismailia and Hazaras in Pakistan.&nbsp;

India to UN: Call on Pakistan to dismantle 'special terrorist zones'

A Pakistani court ruled on Friday that all citizens must declare their religion when applying for identity documents, a move human rights advocates say is another blow for the country&#39;s persecuted minority communities.

The ruling will pile further pressure on the Ahmadi community, who are not allowed to call themselves Muslim or use Islamic symbols in their religious practices, a crime punishable under Pakistan&#39;s blasphemy laws.

The Islamabad High Court ruled that citizens who disguised their religious affiliation were guilty of betraying the state and ordered that anyone applying for government jobs should declare their faith.

&quot;The Government of Pakistan shall take special measure ensuring availability of correct particulars of all the citizens,&quot; Justice Shaukat Aziz Siddiqui said in the judgement.

&quot;It should not be possible for any citizen to hide his/her real identity and recognition.&quot;

If no appeal is launched, the court&#39;s directives will have to be followed.

The vast majority of Pakistan&#39;s 208 million people are Muslims, with minorities accounting for about 3 per cent of the population, according to a 1998 census.

The Ahmadi community has been a target of mob violence and attacks since legislation categorised the sect as non-Muslim in 1974 and have been vilified as blasphemers by leaders of new ultra-religious political party Tehreek-e-Labaik Pakistan.

The judge &quot;is not only attacking everybody&#39;s religious freedom in Pakistan but he is also focusing on one particular sect, which is the Ahmadis,&quot; said Human Rights Watch representative Saroop Ijaz.

&quot;A judgement like this would enable and incite violence.&quot;

The order was issued as a result of a petition brought forward by Tehreek-e-Labaik in connection with a change in wording to an electoral law. The amendment sought to replace a religious oath with a simple declaration, which Tehreek-e-Labaik said was blasphemy.

The government blamed the change on a clerical error and swiftly restored the original format.

Last year, Tehreek-e-Labaik shut down the nation&#39;s capital for nearly three weeks with protests against the change.

Seven people were killed and nearly 200 wounded in a failed police bid to disperse protesters, leading the government to give way to their demand that a minister accused of blasphemy resign.

Insulting the Prophet Mohammad is punishable by death in Pakistan and even a rumour of blasphemy can spark mob violence.

&quot;All his (the judge&#39;s) specific instructions are about ensuring and finding out who is an Ahmadi,&quot; human rights lawyer Jibran Nasir told Reuters, adding that the order would automatically provide the government with specific lists about who belongs to which minority group.

&quot;Every day they are being institutionally reminded that they are a minority,&quot; he added. &quot;It is a bigoted order.&quot;

Pakistan&#39;s minority Shi&#39;ite Muslims regularly come under attack by Islamist groups. Members of its small Hindu and Christian communities have also sometimes been accused of blasphemy.

In blow to minorities, Pakistani court orders citizens to declare religion

A Pakistan court has ordered the election commission to allow the registration of Mumbai terror attack mastermind Hafiz Saeed&#39;s Milli Muslim League as a political party.

The order came days after a Pakistani court extended a stay against the &quot;possible arrest&quot; of the JuD chief till April 4.

The Islamabad High Court (IHC) yesterday set aside a decision by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to reject the application of Jamaat-ud-Dawah&#39;s political front Milli Muslim League (MML) for registration as a political party.

Justice Aamer Farooq sent the case back to the ECP asking it to proceed further on the application by giving the party an opportunity of hearing, Dawn newspaper reported.

The MML through its president Saifullah Khalid approached the IHC and made the ECP and the interior secretary respondents in the matter.

Challenging the ECP&#39;s order of October 11, 2017, the petition described it unreasonable, illegal as well as against the Constitution and the law.

&quot;Article 17 (2) of the Constitution confers a fundamental right on every citizen, not being in the service of Pakistan, to form or to be a member of a political party, subject to any reasonable restriction imposed by the law in the interest of the sovereignty or integrity of Pakistan,&quot; the petitioner maintained.

He prayed to the court to set aside the order and direct the ECP to scrutinise the documents afresh, strictly in accordance with the law and enlist the party.

The ECP had turned down the plea of the MML because of its alleged links with banned militant outfits.

The ECP took the decision on the basis of a letter from the Ministry of Interior which had asked the commission to ban the MML for having links with banned militant outfits.

The ministry had stated that the JuD and its charity Falah-i-lnsaniyat Foundation (FIF) were banned organisations under the Pakistan Security Council Act 1948.

The court&#39;s latest order also comes in the backdrop of a meeting of the Financial Action Task Force (FATF), an intergovernmental money-laundering watchdog, that put Pakistan on a grey list.

At the FATF meeting in Paris last month, Saeed and his &quot;charities&quot; were top on the list of the groups that the FATF wanted Pakistan to act against.

The US Department of the Treasury has designated Saeed as a global terrorist.

Saeed, who is accused of having masterminded the November 2008 Mumbai attack, was also placed on the terrorism black list by the United Nations in December 2008.

The banned JuD head was released from the house arrest in November last year after the Pakistan government decided against detaining him further in any other case. He was under house arrest since January last year.&nbsp;

Pakistan court clears way for registration of Hafiz Saeed's political party

The Ministry of External Affairs, Raveesh Kumar has said that Pakistan is trying to make efforts to mainstream Hafiz Saeed and his system as a political party.

He added that the world is watching that Pakistan is not taking any action against Saeed.

He said &quot;Pakistan is mandated under UN Law to take action against Hafiz Saeed but instant developments coming out of Pak seems to be an attempt by Pak establishment to mainstream him and his system as a political party. It is a way of shielding what he used to do earlier. The true face of Hafiz Saeed and Pakistan is for all to see. Not only India but also the entire international community feels that the action which should be taken against Hafiz Saeed is not being taken&quot;.

Speaking on the rising tensions in the Korean peninsula, Kumar said India&nbsp;is ready to indulge in any kind of dialogue and diplomacy to maintain peace in the region.&nbsp;

&quot;We believe that any solution to the issues in Koran peninsula must take into account and address concerns about the proliferation linkages of DPRK&#39;s nuclear envisage programme. India supports all efforts to bring about peace and stability in the Korean peninsula through dialogue and diplomacy. We hope that such engagement will help in reducing tensions and pave the way for lasting peace &amp; reconciliation in the Korean peninsula&quot;.

Speaking of the reports that claimed Indians were not allowed to attend the event of Dalai Lama, the spokesperson clarified that the Buddhist leader is free to carry his religious functions in India.&nbsp;

He said &quot;Dalai Lama is a revered religious leader and worshipped in India. There is no change in that position. He is free to carry his religious functions here&quot;.

He also spoke about the controversy surrounding the visit of Canadian Prime minister in India.

He said &quot;Jaspal Atwal&nbsp;travelled to India on a valid visa. This was the third visit. Government of India has a conscious policy of outreach to Indian diaspora including misguided elements who in past may have harboured anti-India sentiments which they have since renounced.&nbsp;&quot;There are well-established procedures for grant of visa to foreign travellers which have been followed in this case as well&quot;.

Jaspal Atwal was part of a movement that supported an independent Sikh nation in the 1980 and was imprisoned&nbsp;for the attempted murder of a visiting Indian minister in 1986.

He was invited to a dinner with Canadian Prime minister&nbsp;Justin Trudeau in New Delhi.

Pakistan court orders government to arrest Pervez Musharraf, seize his properties

China has allegedly detained dozens of Chinese Muslim women in its restive Xinjiang province, located in the north-western part of the country, for marrying Pakistani men belonging to Gilgit-Baltistan (GB) region of Pakistan.

This issue was addressed in a unanimously passed resolution of the Gilgit-Baltistan legislative assembly, which was disclosed by the Pakistani lawmakers on Sunday.

According to the resolution passed, it has called the Pakistan government to take urgent steps to secure the release of over 50 Chinese wives, who according to them, was taken into custody last year when they were in their native towns of the Xinjiang province visiting their relatives, the Voice of America reported.

The deputy speaker of the assembly, Jafferullah Khan, was quoted by various media outlets as saying that the Chinese women were rounded up during an anti-terrorism drive by China on the ethnic Uighur Muslim community in Xinjiang.

The women are married to GB men, most of them who are affiliated with trading activities through the Khunjerab Pass, the only land route linking Pakistan and China. The mountain pass is situated about 4,500 meters above the sea level.

Regional lawmakers have asserted that the history of inter-caste marriages between GB and Xinjiang is decades old, and both the border regions share extremely close cultural ties.

They have insisted that the detained Chinese women had no links to any radical terrorism and were absolutely innocent.

The Chinese and Pakistani federal officials are yet to react to the allegations levelled in the resolution.

In the recent years, religiously motivated violence in Xinjiang province has been a thorn in the flesh for Chinese officials. They have blamed the East Turkestan Islamic Movement (ETIM), who are responsible for allegedly plotting terrorist attacks in and beyond the province.

The ETIM is believed to have ties with militants operating in Pakistan and Afghanistan respectively.

The separatist group was founded by Uighur militants, in response to the alleged government suppressions on religious and cultural expression, a charge Beijing has denied it as &quot;baseless&quot;.

The GB region is the gateway to a massive economic cooperation deal, called China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), initiated by Islamabad and Beijing.

The building of the $62 billion economic corridor is a combination of building roads, rails, power plants and economic free zones in Pakistan.

Thousands of Chinese are currently working on the CPEC project in Pakistan. When built, it will link Gwadar to Xinjiang region in China, through Khunjerab Pass, giving Beijing a secure and shortest trade access to international markets.

China accused of detaining Muslim women married to Pakistani men

The possible arrest of Hafiz Saeed, co-founder of Lashkar-e-Taiba and the chief of Jama&#39;at-ud-Da&#39;wah (JuD), was further stayed on Wednesday.

According to the Dawn, the Lahore High Court extended stay against the possible arrest of Saeed as law officers of the federal and provincial governments sought time to file their replies.

The court passed the stay order while hearing a petition filed by Saeed, in which he expressed fear of being arrested by the Pakistani government at the behest of the United States and India.

Justice Aminuddin Khan had on January 24 restrained the Ministry of Interior and the Punjab home department from taking any illegal action against Saeed.

The next hearing in the case will be on April 4.

Saeed&#39;s lawyer A.K. Dogar told the court that his client is an eminent social worker, who founded JuD and Falah-i-Insaniat Foundation (FIF) and established 142 schools and three universities.

Dogar also informed the court that the Punjab Government had recently detained Saeed under the Maintenance of Public Order for 90 days, but was forced to free him after a review board comprising judges of the high court denied an application of the government to further extend the period of the JuD leader, said the Dawn report.

The report quoted lawyer as alleging that all the actions taken by the government against the petitioner had been on the pressure of the US and Indian lobby who for the last many years had been harbouring an unfounded assumption that Hafiz Saeed was somehow involved in Mumbai attacks.

He asked the court to restrain the government from taking any illegal action against the JuD leader.&nbsp;

The possible arrest of Hafiz Saeed, co-founder of Lashkar-e-Taiba and the chief of Jama'at-ud-Da'wah (JuD), was further stayed on Wednesday. According to the Dawn, the Lahore High Court extended stay against the possible arrest of Saeed as law officers of the federal and provincial governments sought time to file their replies. The court passed the stay order while hearing a petition filed by Saeed, in which he expressed fear of being arrested by the Pakistani government at the behest of the United States and India. Justice Aminuddin Khan had on January 24 restrained the Ministry of Interior and the Punjab home department from taking any illegal action against Saeed. The next hearing in the case will be on April 4. Saeed's lawyer A.K. Dogar told the court that his client is an eminent social worker, who founded JuD and Falah-i-Insaniat Foundation (FIF) and established 142 schools and three universities. Slow internet speed is something we all dread. Don&rsquo;t we always look for reasonable speeds so that we can watch videos without any buffer and we can browse better and get a fast digital life? But sadly, when it comes to 4G speed, we in India are far away from what the world is experiencing. The 4G speed in India is not just poor, it&rsquo;s the slowest in the world. In fact, Pakistan offers better 4G speed than India.&nbsp;

A new report from the mobile analytics company Opensignal, &nbsp;reveals surprising results about the 4G trend in India and across the globe.

According to the Opensignal&#39;s report, 4G download speed in India happens to be the slowest across 88 countries.&nbsp;

The average 4G speed in India has been calculated at 6 Mbps. The actual experience, however, could be even lower.

In fact, people in Pakistan enjoy faster internet with an average 4G speed of 14 Mbps.

In fact, India scored a little better in November last year. But the rank has now gone down. In November, India was found to be offering an average 4G download speed of 6.13 Mbps, which has now declined to 6.07 Mbps.

&nbsp;It&rsquo;s just not India, other countries like Algeria, Indonesia, Philippines and Thailand rank among the top 5 countries with slowest 4G speeds.

On the other hand, Singapore, Netherlands, Norway, South Korea and Hungary have been listed as top 5 countries that offer the fastest downloads on 4G.

Opensignal has found that in the fastest countries, the average LTE download speeds have got stalled at 45 Mbps. In other words, no country has yet been able to crack the 50 Mbps mark.

Top 5 countries with slowest 4g speeds

India: 6.07 Mbps
Algeria: 8.65 Mbps
Indonesia: 8.92 Mbps
Philippines: 9.49 Mbps
Thailand: 9.60 Mbps

Top 5 countries with fastest 4g speeds

Singapore: 44.31 Mbps
Netherlands: 42.12 Mbps
Norway: 41.20 Mbps
South Korea: 40.44 Mbps
Hungary: 39.18 Mbps

While India may be offering poor 4G speeds, but it is interesting to note that the country has a wide reach. 4G is available in India for around 86 per cent of the time people access the internet. But it&rsquo;s time to pull up the socks. It&rsquo;s time that India maintained a good balance between the reach and the speed. After all, 4G plays an instrumental role in making India a digital India.&nbsp;

Now that we know India has the slowest 4G speed in the world, it becomes important to understand the reasons behind such a poor performance. But before you hold telecom operators alone responsible for it, let&rsquo;s understand that there is more to than what meets the eye. There are a lot of factors that cause patchy connections and lead to substandard internet speeds in India.

There is a huge spike in data demand. Smartphones have redefined the way we use the internet. As a result, 4G networks are lacking the capacity to deliver faster connection speeds. In other words, companies have been failing to match the growing consumer demand.&nbsp;

It has been discovered that the telecom sector is in a deep financial mess. Mobile operators, therefore, seem to be slow in making investments and upgrading infrastructure. Telecom companies have been found to be facing problems in laying optical fibre that ensures high-speed connections. Also deploying new towers remains a challenge for operators.&nbsp;

Also, when it comes to the internet speed, the standard in India has been kept pretty low by the country&#39;s regulatory body. While TRAI is in the process of revising the speed by 4 times, the low benchmark is observed to be as another reason that is causing poor internet speeds in India.

Hairdressers in Pakistan&#39;s conservative northwest have announced a ban in their shops on &quot;fashionable&quot; beards, saying trendy facial hair violates Islamic law.

The decision affecting Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province echoes a similar ban introduced there more than a decade ago after militant groups including the Pakistani Taliban threatened barbers with dire consequences for trimming beards.

&quot;Creating different beard designs is against the Sunnah (teachings) of the Prophet Mohammed,&quot; Sulemani Hairdressers Association president Sharif Kahlu told a press conference in the provincial capital Peshawar on Monday.

He said tens of thousands of barbers, all members of his association, have promised to abide by the decision and notices would be pasted in shops throughout the province informing customers.&nbsp;

Different Muslim sects adhere to different beard shapes and lengths, but the most generally accepted &quot;Islamic&quot; beard is one that is long enough to be visible from a certain distance, but not longer than a fistful of hair.

Kahlu strongly denied any pressure on his association from any militant organisation, calling the move &quot;a decision of our conscience&quot;.

&quot;We met local administrations of all the major cities and districts in the province and they assured us of their full cooperation but refused to issue any directive to make this decision official,&quot; he said.

He said there were several shops in the province, which were not members of the association. &quot;We will try and convince them to implement the decision but will not force them at all.&quot;

Militants attacked many barber shops and saloons in the province a decade ago, calling the shaving of beards un-Islamic.

In recent years men in Pakistan&#39;s major cities like Karachi and Lahore have become more metrosexual, with the growing middle class taking advantage of a trend in male beauty salons to be selfie-ready at any time.

Hairdressers in Pakistan's conservative northwest have announced a ban in their shops on "fashionable" beards, saying trendy facial hair violates Islamic law. Mumbai terror attack mastermind Hafiz Saeed and other leaders of the JuD and the FIF are still freely using the banned groups&#39; offices despite Pakistan&#39;s claims that all the assets of the two outfits have been seized and their bank accounts frozen, an official said on Tuesday.

The government last month had taken over the Jamaat-ud-Dawa&#39;s famous Muridke Markaz and Lahore&#39;s headquarters of Masjid Al Qadsia in Chauburji. But on ground neither Saeed and his supporters left the JuD&#39;s Chauburji headquarters nor that of Muridke and other offices of JuD and the Falah-i-Insaniyat Foundation (FIF) in the country.

&quot;Since the government has taken over the control of JuD headquarters in Lahore in mid last month, Saeed delivered three Friday sermons in three successive weeks there in the presence of a large number of his supporters. The government could only deploy its administrator at Al Qadsia while the JuD men are operating from there the way they used to,&quot; an official of the Punjab government said on Tuesday.

A similar arrangement was made at JuD&#39;s Muridke headquarters, he added.

&quot;The government has not barred Saeed and activists of his charities from using the JuD headquarters in Lahore and Muridke, and other offices of the two organisations,&quot; he said.

The government had initiated action against Saeed&#39;s organisations in pursuance of an ordinance issued by President Mamnoon Hussain in February amending the Anti-Terrorism Act of 1997, and allowing the state to proscribe UNSC-listed organisations, some of which had been exempt from prosecution.&nbsp;

The move had also come in the backdrop of a meeting of the Financial Action Task Force (FATF), an intergovernmental money-laundering watchdog, that put Pakistan on a grey list.

At the FATF meeting in Paris last month, Saeed and his &quot;charities&quot; were top on the list of the groups that the FATF wanted Pakistan to act against.

Pakistan last week vowed to take further actions to address certain &quot;deficiencies&quot; highlighted by the FATF in its anti-money laundering and counter-terror financing framework.&nbsp;

The JuD is believed to be the front organisation for the LeT which is responsible for carrying out the Mumbai attack that killed 166 people. It has been declared as a foreign terrorist organisation by the US in June 2014.

Punjab law minister Rana Sanaullah Khan said the officials from various government departments had been appointed as administrators of JuD&#39;s offices to oversee the working of welfare-oriented facilities like dispensaries and schools.&nbsp;

To a question about as why the JuD leadership including Saeed had not been stopped using the JuD headquarters in Lahore and Muridke, the minister said: &quot;We have taken over all JuD and FIF facilities including schools, dispensaries, offices and seminaries. These are now in the government&#39;s control.&quot;

Another official said that the government at this stage does not want to stop Saeed and other JuD leaders from using its main headquarters as it may lead to a clash between them.&nbsp;

The Pentagon on Sunday reminded Pakistan that the war on terrorism in the South Asian region reached an &quot;inflection point&quot; and that the country should take the opportunity to tackle and defeat terrorists, as the United States and Pakistan aim&nbsp;to improve their souring ties.

&quot;With respect to Pakistan, we believe that Pakistan can do more to combat terrorism,&quot; Pentagon Chief Spokesperson Dana W. White said at a weekend news briefing in Washington D.C.

&quot;This is an inflection point and this is an opportunity and Pakistan has an opportunity to do more. They&#39;ve been victims of terrorism. So, we&#39;ll look forward to continuing to work with them to see where there are opportunities,&quot; she added.

The Pentagon chief spokesperson also welcomed Pakistan&#39;s support of Afghanistan&#39;s latest peace offer to the Taliban in the Kabul Process Conference in Kabul last week.

Giving a stern warning to the Taliban, White said that the militant group had to abandon the path of terrorism and violence and support the Afghan peace offer.

She also noted that the United States continues to consult New Delhi, not only about &quot;India&#39;s very important role&quot; in Afghanistan but also on other issues that go beyond the South Asian region, The Dawn reported.

The briefing comes after Pakistan Foreign Secretary Tehmina Janjua&#39;s will start her two-day visit to Washington D.C. from Tuesday, which is aimed at defusing the tensions between the US and Pakistan and finding a &quot;common ground&quot;.

On Sunday, official sources confirmed that Janjua will have a series of meetings at the White House and the US State Department and will also address think-tank experts at the US Institute of Peace during her visit.

At the White House, Janjua is likely to meet with Lisa Curtis, the US National Security Council&#39;s senior director for South and Central Asia.

Curtis arrived in Islamabad last week and held talks with Janjua and Pakistan Interior Minister Ahsan Iqbal on overall ties between the two countries.

Both sides called for the developing of sustainable peace in Afghanistan and stressed on measures needed to stop human trafficking in the region.

Curtis also visited Islamabad in October last year and met with various Pakistani officials. Both sides had agreed to the common objective of eliminating terrorism.

Accompanied by a whole slew of high-ranking government officials and ministers, Nawaz Sharif laid the stone for a local dam, a business complex, a university, and an economic free zone to be developed for the region.

Considered as one of the remotest areas of Pakistan, these projects are meant to mainstream the region and bring about progress and prosperity for the people.

Plans are afoot to complete the projects over the next couple of years; on completion, these projects will transform the city of Gwadar - located on the shores of the Arabian sea - into an international city with a world-class sea-port.

Since 2015, Gwadar&rsquo;s strategic and economic significance has increased manifold with the opening of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).

Nawaz Sharif said Pakistan and China have signed a joint venture in infrastructure, power, and railways through which traffic from Gwadar will go to China and vice versa.

To emphasise Gwadar&rsquo;s centrality to Pakistan, the prime minister quipped, &ldquo;Gwadar is Pakistan and Pakistan is Gwadar.&rdquo;

In his inauguration speech, Sharif also paid tribute to the armed forces, security agencies, police, administration and other institutions who have &ldquo;sacrificed for peace in the country&rdquo;. He warned that terrorists are still running amok and have been making a last-ditch effort to strike at soft targets, but he expressed confidence that the terrorists will fail miserably in their nefarious designs.

The development projects come with the promise of creating 50,000 jobs in the region. Sharif was particularly thankful to China - who he called a &ldquo;true friend&rdquo; for supporting and making development in the port city a success.

Ambassador &nbsp;Sun Weidong of China said that he was pleased to partner the development of Gwadar and mentioned his country&#39;s support for construction of Gwadar Free Zone and handing over a school for the local people.

While the Gwadar Free Zone will help attract investors, the new educational facilities, both the ambassador and the prime minister hoped, will enable the locals to play their role in national development.

Like all acts of development, these projects in Balochistan fulfill crucial political-economic objectives. The proponents of development hope that the projects in bringing prosperity will stabilise the region and further economic goals of both Pakistan and China.

Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif recently laid the stone for a few infrastructure projects to be developed for the region

Balochistan, recently in news for political unrest, witnessed the inauguration of a series of development projects yesterday. Pakistan’s Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif has assured to the people investment worth billions of rupees in the region. Accompanied by a whole slew of high-ranking government officials and ministers, Nawaz Sharif laid the stone for a local dam, a business complex, a university, and an economic free zone to be developed for the region.
