In his quest for global attention, Pakistani prime minister Imran Khan often lectures India on the rights of minorities.

He has tried to berate India on global forums, indulged in fearmongering at public events and even tweeted a fake video, claiming it showed police violence in Uttar Pradesh.

The Pakistani prime minister would be better served if he looks in his backyard first because the numbers tell the story of how religious persecution is now rampant in Pakistan.

A 2015 report says that at least one thousand girls are forcibly converted to Islam in Pakistan every year. Another report says that 95 per cent of all Hindu temples in Pakistan have been either destroyed or converted.

A survey found that only 20 Hindu temples out of 428 places of worship are operational now. The situation is particularly worse for the Hindus. In 2013, journalist Andrew Buncombe wrote in the UNHCR refugees daily - "Pakistan is worse than hell for Muslims."

As the story from Sindh made front-page news, it started trending - hashtags like minorities in danger in Pakistan and wake up UNHCR started doing the rounds.

Many drew parallels with India. India has more Muslims than Pakistan, and yet they are technically a minority. Comparing India and Pakistan is a case of apples and oranges.

It's unfair and unnecessary. And it doesn't really cover India in glory. The situation in India is and should be better than Pakistan. India is a secular country. Measuring itself against Pakistan on any parameter, and coming out the winner, does little to burnish India's image.

But if a comparison must be made, this is what it looks like: The population of minorities in India has been steadily growing.

According to pew, the population of Muslims will grow from around 14 per cent to 18 per cent by 2050. Minorities in India enjoy the Rights to Practice their Religion.

Muslim lawmakers have representation in the Indian Parliament. When they don't agree with something, they protest, like people of any religion do.

Case in point - the anti-CAA protests. The Muslims of India are at the forefront of the protest, so are people from other religions.

Compare this with what happened in Pakistan when a Sikh tried to save his daughter from forced conversion. In response, angry Islamists shouted anti-Sikh slogans, pelted stones at a Gurudwara and threatened to destroy it.

It doesn't take much for the global community to realise that minorities are under threat in Pakistan.

Islamabad state intolerance towards minorities can be traced back to the Zia ul Haq era - the dictator legitimised the oppression of minorities by tweaking laws.

Consequently, the standing of minorities was reduced before the courts. Electoral laws were diluted, separate electorates for minorities were introduced - a system that was not abolished until 2002.

While the minorities were welcomed back into a joint electoral system, they still do not enjoy equal rights. Pakistani society still does not accept them as their own. Hardliners still dictate the rules and the silence of the state only enables their persecution.

So why have international watchdogs failed to call Pakistan out? Unfortunately, condemnations have been limited to diplomatic texts here.

The classic double standards and the West cutting Pakistan some slack each time in the hope that it won't be branded Islamophobic.

Prime Minister Imran Khan has directed to convene a high-level inter-ministerial meeting to discuss preventive measures against the deadly coronavirus and formulate a comprehensive strategy to tackle the threat.

The deadly novel virus, which causes pneumonia-like illness, has already killed 106 people and infected more than 4,515 others in China.

The high-level meeting would be chaired by Special Assistant to the Prime Minister (SAPM) on Health Dr Zafar Mirza, according to the Prime Minister's office.

Khan directed that the outcome of the meeting along with firm recommendations shall be furnished to his office within one week, as per reports.

His office stated that due to the presence of a large number of Chinese citizens in Pakistan and frequent travel between the two countries, the spread of coronavirus in Pakistan cannot be ruled out if necessary precautionary measures are not put in place.

Meanwhile, Chinese Ambassador Yao Jing, in a video statement, said that Chinese and Pakistani governments are working closely and 500 Pakistani citizens in Wuhan city of Hubei province are safe and being looked after.

"So far three suspicious cases in the Chinese community have been reported in Pakistan, but none of them has been confirmed. We have confidence and determination that we will overcome this difficult time and will return to normal life very soon," Yao said.

Meanwhile, the Islamabad International Airport management has sought two more "virus detection scanners".

An eight-member health department team has been monitoring the passengers arriving from Beijing. All the passengers are passed through the virus detection scanners and also checked by thermal guns.

The coronavirus, officially known as 2019-nCoV, was first reported in Hubei province's capital city Wuhan and has spread throughout China and around the world including the US, Australia and South Korea.

There are 41 incoming flights from China to Pakistan every week, mostly taking away and bringing the Chinese. Thousands of Chinese nationals who are working on projects in various cities in Pakistan as part of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor regularly travel between the two countries, raising fears they could spread the disease.

The coronavirus has caused alarm because of its similarity to SARS (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome), which killed nearly 650 people across mainland China in 2002-2003.

Pakistan to convene high-level meet to discuss preventive measures against coronavirus

A Pakistani court has ruled that the concept of trial in absentia is against the golden principles of natural justice as it issued a detailed judgement on self-exiled former dictator Pervez Musharraf's petition challenging his death sentence on charges of high treason.

A special court in Islamabad on December 17 last year handed down the death penalty to the 74-year-old retired general, now based in Dubai, after six years of hearing the high-profile treason case against him. His trial was declared as "unconstitutional" by the Lahore High Court (LHC) through a short order on January 13, leading to the annulment of the death sentence against the ex-Pakistan Army chief.

The detailed judgement, authored by LHC Justice Syed Mazahar Ali Akbar Naqvi, found the process for the establishment of the special court in consultation with the then chief justice of Pakistan and chief justices of five high courts alien to the Constitution.

"It is established without any doubt that the very constitution of the special court was squarely illegal/improper and without jurisdiction," ruled the bench on Monday.

It said that the concept of trial in absentia is not only inconsistent with the doctrine of Islamic justice enunciated in the Holy Quran and Sunnah but also against the golden principles of natural justice, according to the report.

The full bench of the LHC observed that the interior secretary was competent to file a complaint against the accused of "high treason" only on the recommendations of the federal government, whereas the federal government was to operate in the spirit of Article 90(1) of the Constitution which includes the prime minister and the Cabinet.

Also Read: Musharraf seeks mercy from Pakistan President Alvi over death penalty

"However, the requisite requirement of the Constitution was totally ignored," the LHC said in the verdict.

The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) government led by former prime minister Nawaz Sharif had filed the treason case against the former army chief in 2013 over the imposition of an extra-constitutional emergency in November 2007, which led to the confinement of a number of superior court judges in their houses and sacking of over 100 judges.

In a huge reprieve for Musharraf, the LHC declared that the formation of the special court was "unconstitutional" and that the treason case against the former president was not prepared under the law.

Barrister Salman Safdar, the counsel for Musharraf, had stated that his absence at the hearing of the special court was not intentional and that he was unable to appear before it as he was ill.

On January 18, Pakistan's Supreme Court returned the petition against his conviction and sentencing by a special tribunal with the objection that he is not allowed to appeal without surrendering to the law. Musharraf, who has been living in Dubai since March 2016, left Pakistan for medical treatment and has not returned since, citing security and health reasons.

Dr Muhammad Amjad, Musharraf's close aide and the ex-chairperson of his All Pakistan Muslim League (APML) party, has said that the former president was rapidly becoming weaker due to an unknown disease, which is why he was unable to return to Pakistan to face the treason case.

Pakistan has been a hub of religious persecution. The shocking incidents of young non-Muslim girls being made to convert to Islam have become a daily occurrence in Pakistan.

Every year, around 1,000 young Sindhi Hindu girls between the age of 12 and 28 are abducted, forcibly married and converted to Islam.

Every month between 40 to 60 Sindhi girls are converted.

According to Pakistan's own human rights commission from January 2004 to May 2018, there were 7,430 cases of such abductions of Sindhi girls in Pakistan.

The actual number is estimated to be much higher as most of the cases go unreported.

India slipped two places on the Corruption Perception Index after it ranked at 80, compared to the previous year when it was ranked at 78, said Transparency International in its annual report on Thursday.

The country scored 41 out of 100, same as last year's, indicating moderate to high-level of corruption.

Interestingly, China, Ghana, Benin and Morocco shared the same score as India on the index.

Meanwhile, Pakistan was ranked at 120 out of 180 which indicated 'very high levels' of corruption. The neighbouring island, Sri Lanka was ranked at 93 with a score of 38.

The corruption perception index uses a scale from 0 to 100, where 100 is considered very clean while 0 is highly corrupt. It scores 180 countries and territories by their perceived levels of public sector corruption, according to experts and business people.

According to the report, two-thirds of the countries scored below 50 with an average score of 43.

The report also highlighted that this year corruption was more pervasive in countries where "big money can flow freely into electoral campaigns and where governments listen only to the voices of wealthy or well-connected individuals."

While the highest scoring regions mostly were in western Europe and European countries, the lowest-scoring countries were in the sub-Saharan Africa region, the annual report showed.

The countries which topped the list are New Zealand and Denmark, with scores of 87 each, followed by Finland (86), Singapore (85), Sweden (85) and Switzerland (85).

The bottom countries are Somalia, South Sudan and Syria with scores of 9, 12 and 13, respectively.

These countries are closely followed by Yemen (15), Venezuela (16), Sudan (16), Equatorial Guinea (16) and Afghanistan (16) and North Korea (17).

Pakistan wants peace with India by addressing all conflicts including border issues through talks, country's Prime Minister said on Wednesday during his address at the World Economic Forum.

"I've always believed that the only way forward is via peace settlements. We want to mend our fences with Iran. We had some border issues with them. And then with India," Khan said while delivering a keynote address at Davos.

"You cannot have two nuclear-armed nations at such sensitive relations. This is why I asked for international overseers to come to the Line of Control," Khan also said.

Talking about India's growing economy, Khan said, "Howdy Modi doesn't bother me. I understand the relationship between the US and India. India is a huge market."

Tensions between India and Pakistan have spiralled after the Indian Parliament on Tuesday passed a resolution to revoke Article 370 and a bill bifurcating Jammu and Kashmir into two Union Territories.

The address comes a day after Khan held a meeting with US President Donald Trump on the sidelines of the event.

Relations between India and Pakistan have been tensed since last year after a Pakistan based terrorist group attacked an Indian Army convoy in Jammu and Kashmir's Pulwama district. Around 40 soldiers were killed in the incident.

Rattled by New Delhi's decisions, Islamabad "rejected" the move and said it will exercise "all possible options" to counter the steps.

Meanwhile, India has been calling on Pakistan to crack down on the terror groups based on its territory and take immediate, irreversible action against them.

In December last year, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had said, despite extending a "hand of friendship" India has got "betrayal" from Pakistan.

"I invited Pakistan's PM for oath-taking ceremony in 2014. We had extended a hand of friendship towards Pakistan. I visited Lahore, but we got betrayal," PM Modi had said.

A Pakistani delegation has arrived in Beijing for highly important three-day face-to-face talks with the global money laundering watchdog Financial Action Task Force (FATF) Working Group, slated to begin on Tuesday.

WION Dispatch: Can Pakistan get off FATF's grey list?

The meeting between Pakistan and the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) begun in Beijing on Tuesday and according to reports, things might not be looking good for the country as it is heading to the meeting with a 400% surge in cases against eight globally banned organisations.

However, Pakistan minister of state for economic affairs Hammad Azhar and his team will defend the country's performance on 22 points given by the global watchdog at the joint group meeting starting today, with a focus on buying more time.

Pakistan which is already on the FATF's grey list for failing to combat terror financing and money laundering is hoping to convince the body that the country has taken measures to counter these crimes in the country.

In its compliance report submitted first in December 2019, and then again on 8 January 2020, which answered the 150 questions posed by the FATF regarding new Pakistani policies on money laundering, Pakistan has apprised the joint group of FATF that as many as 500 terror-financing-related cases were registered, out of which 55 ended up in conviction in the courts.

However, these might be inflated numbers. For instance one of the world's most dreaded terrorist Hafiz Saeed has 11 cases registered against him directly but Pakistan has only been able to indict him in just two cases.

Moreover, the FATF has also informed that the State Bank of Pakistan imposed penalties on defaulting banks and statutory sanctions regime was implemented. The mandatory currency declaration scheme was also implemented at all airports in the country.

The 650-page report outlined the steps taken by Pakistan between October 2019 to January 2020 to implement the group’s recommendations. In the last plenary meeting in October 2019, FATF had shown satisfaction over only five points of the action plan out of a total 27.

Expecting that the FATF may grant another relaxation to the country, probably up to June or September 2020, in its upcoming plenary review meeting in February, Pakistan is expected to argue that four months is too short a period for Pakistan to comply with all remaining 22 points of the action plan.

FATF kept Pakistan on the grey list up to February 2020 and it is trying to avoid blacklisting by the body.

The face-to-face meeting in Beijing will continue for three days till January 23 before the FATF's upcoming plenary meeting which will be held in Paris.

Pakistan faces three possibilities, either exclusion from the grey list and placement on the white; the grey-list status quo for up to June or September; or blacklisting in the worst-case scenario.

Pakistan has so far successfully managed to avoid the blacklist due to diplomatic support from China, Turkey, Malaysia, Saudi Arabia and middle-east countries.

Meanwhile, Pakistan reached out to the United States to help it get out of FATF's grey-list. Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi visited Washington DC last week and in a press briefing said that Pakistan hoped US would back its efforts to get it off the list at the FATF's Beijing meeting.

Qureshi also met US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and National Security Adviser Robert O'Brien over the issue.

Pakistan to focus on buying more time as it holds meeting with FATF in Beijing

A Lahore-based journalist was detained in Pakistan for his anti-state post on social media site Facebook.

The journalist identified as Azhar-ul Haq Wahid has worked for a small Pakistani television and newspaper.

According to FIR filed with Federal Investigation Agency's cyber wing, "anti-state and defamatory material against the public functionaries and state departments" were published through Washid's Facebook ID.

Wahid was arrested on Thursday in the Lahore and has been in custody since then.

His lawyer Mian Dawood said a court must decide his bail later this week.

The arrest "is only to threaten the freedom of media" which has faced "blatant censorship for last three years in Pakistan", news agency AFP quoted Dawood as saying.

Pakistan has long been one of the most dangerous places in the world for journalists, once caught between Islamist militants and the powerful security establishment.

However, security has dramatically improved in recent years. Now Pakistani media complain of increasing censorship and pressure by the military establishment.

In 2018 the Committee to Protect Journalists noted that the military had "quietly but effectively" imposed strict limits on the scope of general news reporting.

(With inputs from agencies)
