In his interview with The Guardian, Pakistan prime minister Shehbaz Sharif called former prime minister Imran Khan a cheat and the "biggest liar on earth," whose policies, according to Sharif, have ruined the country's economy.

Referring to the recent cypher audio leaks, the Prime Minister said that they were "an irrefutable endorsement that he (Imran) is the biggest liar on the face of the earth," ANI reported.

"Cypher" is a keyword in Pakistani politics right now, which is evoking images of secretive communication in the South Asian country being highlighted in the news after Khan claimed a whole conspiracy to oust him. Last week, after an audio leak, Khan said that it was good that this audio got leaked and wished for the cypher to also get leaked so that Pakistan could know about the 'foreign conspiracy.'

Sharif on Monday (October 3) talked about the PTI leader's leadership that has caused severe damage to the country's domestic and foreign affairs. He further accused Khan of 'injecting poison into society' after his ouster.

"I'm not saying this with a sense of glee but a sense of embarrassment and concern. My country's image has been damaged hugely by these lies told out of mean personal interest," he said.

Pakistan cabinet approves legal action against Imran Khan over audio leaks about US cypher

'Cypher' is a keyword in Pakistan politics now. The term that evokes images of secret diplomatic and intelligence communications crept its way into the South Asian country's daily news terminology after claims from former prime minister Imran Khan about a conspiracy to oust him. He was indeed removed from office, but his oft-repeated references to a 'cypher' has led to a controversy that refuses to die down.

The latest development is that a former diplomat on Sunday questioned the federal cabinet's decision to reevaluate the cypher's details in a cabinet report.

The 'cypher controversy' escalated in the wake of recent audio leaks of several political leaders, including that of Khan.

The diplomat in conversation with The Express Tribune said, "By revealing the date and number and stating that it was annexed with the summary, an impression arises that the whole cabinet has read it and thus violated the secrets act."

"Even citing cypher No and date is a violation of the official secret act," the ex-diplomat said.

So what exactly is a cypher?

Simply put, cypher is a secret, restricted diplomatic communication written in some kind of code language, with a specif number and date assigned to it. Deeply encrypted and difficult to decode, a cypher is divided as per its grade. There are two grades for circulation; grade I and grade II. The first grade has limited circulation in comparison to the second one. Cypher details are machine-generated as per the distribution list unless it has been specified by a dignified person.

The original copy is kept at the Foreign Office and making copies is against the law.

The controversy about cyphers revived last week when the current government charged Imran Khan with violating his oath as a prime minister by providing false information on a diplomatic cypher for his political gains. This controversy surfaced when the former PM accused a US diplomat of threatening a Pakistani diplomat, the latter being informed about this through a cypher.

Last week, two audio recordings of Imran Khan, along with his secretary and cabinet ministers, allegedly discussing how to play up the cypher issue went viral on social media. After the leak of the first audio, Khan said that it was good that this audio got leaked and he wanted the cypher to also get leaked.

The Shehbaz Sharif administration on Friday noted that a copy of the cypher was missing from the PM's house.

However, the former diplomat said that the prime mover cannot be held responsible for it, as he doesn't keep the cypher nor do the filing. The cypher is kept in the principal secretary's office, where several others keep an eye on secret communication.

When asked about what happens if the cypher goes missing, a renowned attorney said that it cannot be specially stated.

In Pakistan, leaked audio and video calls have troubled the ruling government, but there has never been a thorough investigation into this to accept or deny the claims. Will this be repeated?

The emergency ward at the main government hospital in Sehwan, a small town in southern Pakistan, is overwhelmed.

On a recent visit, Reuters witnessed hundreds of people crammed into rooms and corridors, desperately seeking treatment for malaria and other illnesses that are spreading fast after the country's worst floods in decades.

Amid the crush, Naveed Ahmed, a young doctor in the emergency response department of the Abdullah Shah Institute of Health Sciences, is surrounded by five or six people trying to get his attention.

The 30-year-old keeps his cool as stretched emergency services struggle to cope with thousands of patients arriving from miles around after their homes were submerged under water when heavy rains fell in August and September.'

Also read | Pakistan International Airlines 'regrets' asking cabin crew to 'wear undergarments', issues clarification

"We become so overworked at times that I feel like collapsing and going on an intravenous drip," a smiling Ahmed told Reuters as he sipped a cup of tea in the hospital's canteen during a short break.

"But it's because of the prayers of these patients that we keep going."

Ahmed is on the frontline of the battle to limit sickness and death across southern Pakistan, where hundreds of towns and villages were cut off by rising waters. The deluge has affected around 33 million people in a country of 220 million.

Most of the estimated 300-400 patients arriving at his clinic each morning, many of them children, are suffering from malaria and diarrhoea, although with winter approaching, Ahmed fears other illnesses will become more common.

"I hope people displaced by the floods can get back to their homes before winter; (if not) they will be exposed to respiratory illnesses and pneumonia living in tents," he said.

Hundreds of thousands of Pakistanis who fled their homes are living in government camps set up to accommodate them, or simply out in the open.

Stagnant floodwaters, spread over hundreds of square kilometres (miles), may take two to six months to recede in some places, and have already led to widespread cases of skin and eye infections, diarrhoea, malaria, typhoid and dengue fever.

The crisis hits Pakistan at a particularly bad time. With its economy in crisis, propped up by loans from the International Monetary Fund, it does not have the resources to cope with the longer term effects of the flooding.

Nearly 1,700 people have been killed in the floods caused by heavy monsoon rains and melting glaciers. Pakistan estimates the cost of the damage at $30 billion, and the government and United Nations have blamed the catastrophe on climate change.

Over 340 people have died of diseases caused by the floods, authorities have said.

Second disaster

According to the health department of Sindh province, the worst-affected region, 17,285 cases of malaria have been confirmed since July 1.

Anticipating the risk of disease outbreaks after the rescue and relief phase of the floods, the Sindh government is trying to hire more than 5,000 health professionals on a temporary basis in districts most at risk.

"We are short of human resources considering the magnitude of the burden of disease following the unprecedented rains and floods," Qasim Soomro, provincial lawmaker and parliamentary health secretary of the Sindh government, told Reuters.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has raised concern about an impending "second disaster" of water-borne diseases spreading across the country, particularly in Sindh.

In the hospital ward in Sehwan, a young man with a high fever was having fits on a bed outside the main emergency room. His mother ran to Ahmed, who attended the patient and asked a male nurse to place cold pads on his forehead.

The air was heavy with humidity, and there were not enough air conditioners to cool temperatures in overcrowded corridors lined with beds. The wards were filled to capacity and a handful of beds had more than one patient on them.

Ahmed, a graduate of a university in China, described the pressure he and other medics were under.

"With such influx, we ... cannot wait for test results for each patient to start the treatment," he said, adding he begins administering medicine for malaria as soon as he sees some symptoms.

The institute in Sehwan serves people from neighbouring towns and districts, including those living in camps while the waters recede and rebuilding can begin.

Jagan Shahani's daughter fell unconscious after getting a fever around a week ago. He used a boat to get out of his flooded village of Bhajara and flagged down a car on the nearby road that took them to Sehwan.

"Doctors said she had malaria," he said late last week. "This is our fourth night here. There is nothing here to eat but Allah has been very kind to provide everything," added Shahani, whose 15-year-old daughter Hameeda is now recovering.

On the outskirts of town, hundreds of displaced people queued up for rations being distributed at Lal Bagah, a tent settlement where displaced families prepared tea and breakfast on open fires.

The Indus Highway that runs past Sehwan is dotted with tent camps for displaced people.

Some are beginning to return home where waters have retreated far enough, but not all are so lucky.

"There is no one here to help me but Allah. I pray to Allah that the waters recede in my village and I can return to my home," said Madad Ali Bozdar.

Bozdar, 52, is from Bubak, a town located on the north-eastern bank of Manchar Lake. Speaking on Friday, he said his village was still under 10 to 12 feet (3-4 metres) of water. He expected to be able to go back in around two months' time.

Amid the crush, Naveed Ahmed, a young doctor in the emergency response department of the Abdullah Shah Institute of Health Sciences, is surrounded by five or six people trying to get his attention. The 30-year-old keeps his cool as stretched emergency services struggle to cope with thousands of patients arriving from miles around after their homes were submerged under water when heavy rains fell in August and September.' Also read | Pakistan International Airlines 'regrets' asking cabin crew to 'wear undergarments', issues clarification "We become so overworked at times that I feel like collapsing and going on an intravenous drip," a smiling Ahmed told Reuters as he sipped a cup of tea in the hospital's canteen during a short break. "But it's because of the prayers of these patients that we keep going." Ahmed is on the frontline of the battle to limit sickness and death across southern Pakistan, where hundreds of towns and villages were cut off by rising waters. Watch | Pakistan: 25,000 farmers stage protest in Islamabad, ask for fertilisers subsidies Second disaster According to the health department of Sindh province, the worst-affected region, 17,285 cases of malaria have been confirmed since July 1. WATCH WION LIVE HERE

Pakistan legend Javed Miandad has urged the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to have an 'honest' conversation with captain Babar Azam amid a drop in his performance. Miandad wants PCB to ask Babar if captaincy is taking a toll on his game and whether the star batter feels he cannot cope with the burden of leading the side.

Babar has been one of Pakistan's most prolific run-getters across formats over the last few years. However, he has struggled with his form of late and has failed to produce big knocks consistently. His rough patch with the bat is a huge concern for Pakistan with the T20 World Cup 2022 starting in Australia this month.

“Babar is a world-class batsman. But the board should ask him if the captaincy is taking a toll on him. There needs to be an honest conversation between him and the board. If he feels he can’t both perform with the bat and lead in the field, then the captaincy shouldn’t stay with him. However, the board should clarify to Babar that he is their preferred choice for captain,” Miandad was quoted as saying by Cricket Pakistan.

Babar is currently leading Pakistan in the ongoing seven-match T20I series against England at home. The Pakistan skipper has managed to spark some sort of a turnaround but has struggled for consistency. After a terrific century in the second T20I, Babar slammed an unbeaten 87 in the 6th T20I against England in Lahore on Friday.

However, his brilliant knock went in vain as Pakistan failed to defend a total of 169 runs and lost the game by 8 wickets with as many as 33 balls to spare. Babar will be hoping to end the series on a high when Pakistan lock horns with England in the 7th and final T20I on Sunday.

The series is currently locked at 3-3 with the final match a decider at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore. Pakistan will head to Australia for the T20 World Cup starting later this month after the conclusion of the England series.

More than 25,000 farmers from Pakistan's Punjab province have occupied a sit-in in protest in Islamabad, paralysing the nation's capital and complicating transport because of roadblocks made by the government.

Under the leadership of Kisan Ittehad, the farmers have vowed not to leave the capital until their demands are met.

Since September 21, tens of thousands of farmers have travelled to the capital twice, each time because the administration has disregarded their mutually agreed-upon requests.

This has forced the government to take preventative measures, such as blocking important highways and expressways and blocking road access to the fortified Red Zone with containers.

“Farmers came from across Punjab province and demanded restoration of the previous tube well electricity tariff of Rs.5.3 per unit and abolishing of all taxes and adjustments,” said an official of the capital administration.

“An end must be put to the black marketing of fertilizers and reduction of urea rate, which has increased by at least 400 per cent.”

The fee for wheat should be set at 2,400 PKR per mound, and the rate for sugarcane should be set at 280 PKR, according to the desires of the farmers.

In a big legal victory for the ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) party, its vice president Maryam Nawaz was on Thursday acquitted by a high court in a corruption case which will allow her to contest elections. The Islamabad High Court (IHC) accepted the appeal of Maryam, daughter of former prime minister Nawaz Sharif, and that of her husband Muhammad Safdar who had challenged their convictions by an anti-corruption court in the Avenfield property case in July 2018.

The Avenfield case refers to the purchase of four posh flats in Avenfield House, Park Lane in London. A two-judge bench comprising Justice Aamer Farooq and Justice Mohsin Akhtar Kayani hearing their appeals said the opinion of the investigating officer could not be considered as evidence.

The joint investigation team did not present any facts, it just collected information, Justice Kayani observed. At the conclusion of the case, the bench held that the National Accountability Bureau (NAB), the prosecutor in the case, failed to establish the charges of corruption.

The NAB had accused the Sharifs of purchasing the flats with money over and above their known sources of income. The Sharifs rejected the accusation of wrongdoing but were unable to show where the money for the flats had come from. The NAB in September had admitted before the IHC that the PML-N leader had no direct role in purchasing the Avenfield properties.

Thursday’s verdict has paved the way for Maryam, 48, to be eligible to contest elections. Lawyer Mirza Moiz Baig said: A person who has been convicted of a crime involving corruption or moral turpitude is disqualified from contesting elections unless a period of five years has lapsed since their release." Maryam in a brief chat with the media outside the court said they had been vindicated.

As she talked to the media, she also spoke to her father Nawaz Sharif in London and also received another call from her uncle Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, who congratulated her on her acquittal. Maryam’s acquittal in the Avenfield reference is a slap in the face of the so-called accountability system that was employed to target the Sharif family. “How do Wajid Zia’s statement and the material presented to prove the prosecution’s case?" the court inquired. Zia was the investigating officer who headed the joint investigation team (JIT) that probed the Panama gate, leading to the disqualification of Nawaz Sharif.

While Maryam and her husband were convicted along with the PML-N supremo, the elder Sharif was handed down 10 years in jail, his daughter sentenced to seven years in prison, and her husband was sentenced to one year in prison. They had filed appeals against their conviction before the IHC in the second week of August 2018 and the court had on September 18 the same year suspended their sentences and released them on bail.

The elder Sharif’s appeal is still pending as has been living in London and failed to appear before the court despite being given several opportunities. Overturning the conviction of his daughter, however, opens a window for him to come back and get his bail processed with the hope to get relief.

The NAB had accused the Sharifs of purchasing the flats with money over and above their known sources of income.
