Shocking details have emerged that dozens of corpses were found rotting on the roof of a hospital in Pakistan's Multan city on Friday (October 14) following which an investigation has been launched by the authorities.

Some reports even claimed that at least 200 unclaimed bodies were dumped on the roof of the Nishtar Hospital's anatomy department with eagles and crows scavenging on them. Gory images and videos have been circulating widely on various social media platforms.

Parvez Elahi, chief minister of the state of Punjab in Pakistan, constituted a committee to investigate the matter. The six-member committee, which is led by Muzamil Bashir, the specialist healthcare secretary, has been granted three days to conclude the investigation.

Pakistan-based media outlet Geo News reported that a top official from the hospital accused police and rescue workers for the decomposing bodies lying on the facility's rooftop.

The official was quoted as saying, "Police and rescue officials bring bodies and ask us to keep them but they do not take them back on time. We have written to them several times and asked them to take the bodies. Since there is a lag, such things happen."

"When the bodies keep lying, they get infested with maggots who start eating them, and travel from one body to another. This is why, the decaying bodies are kept on the roof, where there are three rooms."

In a huge shake-up of the top brass of Pakistan's Army ahead of the change in leadership next month as Gen Qamar Javed Bajwa leaves, 12 major generals were promoted to the rank of lieutenant general.

Major Generals Inam Haider Malik, Fayyaz Hussain Shah, Nauman Zakria, Mohammad Zafar Iqbal, Ayman Bilal Safdar, Ahsan Gulrez, Syed Aamer Raza, Shahid Imtiaz, Mohammad Munir Afsar, Maj General Babar Iftikhar, Yousaf Jamal, and Kashif Nazir are among those promoted, according to ISPR.

It is unusual to see so many people promoted to the position of lieutenant general at once. Although these elevations are typically supposed to be done on the basis of vacancies, the promotions in the Army had been overdue for about a year, reported Dawn newspaper.

The seats vacated by the retirement of three lieutenant generals in the middle of October 2021, one in July of this year, and five at the end of September would be filled by the 12 newly promoted generals. Lt Gen Majid Ehsan, the former IG Arms, Lt Gen Amir Abbasi, the former QMG, and Lt Gen Hamooduz Zaman Khan, the former Commander of Army Air Defence Command, were among those who had retired a year earlier.

After Lt. Gen. Sarfraz Ali, the corps commander of Balochistan, was killed in a helicopter crash on August 2 while carrying out flood relief operations, the tenth position became vacant.

To replace the anticipated four-star vacancies caused by the impending retirement of Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee Gen Nadeem Raza and Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Gen Qamar Javed Bajwa, two additional generals have been promoted in advance.

The COAS alone has the authority to promote soldiers at this level. However, it is customary for the chiefs to meet with other top generals informally before making the choices.

The 12 promoted officers would make up a sizable portion of the team that the new chief would take over in November, making the most recent promotions one of Gen. Bajwa's most important decisions prior to his retirement. The posting of the promoted officers, which GHQ would soon complete, would now be the focus of all attention. A number of significant posts are presently open.

Due to the elevation of two officers to four star ranks and the resignation of four other officers after being replaced, the seven slots had become vacant at that time.

A couple of the recently promoted officers had worked closely with Gen. Bajwa. These officers include DG ISPR Gen Babar Iftikhar, DG Perspective Planning Cell Gen Ayman Bilal Safdar, and Vice Chief of General Staff-A Gen Nauman Zikriya.

Former Pakistan all-rounder Shahid Afridi has slammed Babar Azam asking him to come out of his average mindset. Afridi was not happy with Babar's timid approach during Pakistan's recent clash against Bangladesh in the ongoing tri-series in New Zealand.

Afridi's comments came in response to Babar's views ahead of Pakistan's game against Bangladesh in Christchurch. When asked about what kind of target they were looking to set for Bangladesh, Babar had said the Men in Green were looking at something close to 160.

Pakistan went on to post 167 runs on the board batting first and ended up winning the game comfortably by 21 runs. However, Babar's comments didn't go down well with Afridi, who has advised the Pakistan skipper to ditch his timid approach in T20Is and look at setting up big totals against all kinds of teams.

"Babar must come out of this average mindset and think big. If scoring 160 runs for the target against Bangladesh was his big intent, then what is he going to do against stronger teams," said Afridi.

While he criticised Babar for his approach, Afridi extended support to his opening partner Mohammad Rizwan, who has also been facing criticism from all corners over his sluggish approach with the bat. Both Babar and Rizwan have been slammed by many for failing to accelerate quickly as a result of which the team suffers when setting up targets.

However, Afridi urged Rizwan to continue playing the way he has been and ignore the critics. Rizwan is currently the top-ranked T20 batter in the world and has been a consistent run-getter for Pakistan in the shortest format.

"The actual thing is the beginning. Babar and Rizwan should score the chunk of runs [for other batters]. Rizwan shouldn't listen to anyone," said Afridi.

A 14-year-old girl from the minority Hindu community was abducted from Pakistan’s Sindh province, making it the fourth incident in the past 15 days.

According to local media reports, Chandra Mehraj was kidnapped from Fateh Chowk area of Hyderabad while she was returning home.

Suspecting it to be a case of forced conversion, the parents have lodged a police complaint.

This comes days after the abduction of three Hindu women who were then converted to Islam in the province.

A 14-year-old girl named Meena Meghwar was abducted from Nasarpur area on September 24, while another one was kidnapped in Mirpurkhas town while returning home.

Muslims make up 97 per cent of Pakistan’s population while Hindus are around only 2 per cent, in which close to 90 per cent of them reside in Sindh province bordering Hindu-majority neighbour India.

On average, nearly 1,000 minority girls are abducted and forcefully converted to Islam, claim rights groups, adding that some victims are as young as 12.

There have been several reports of forced conversions, especially of minority Hindu girls, but the governments and politicians in Pakistan have remained silent and done little to address the issue.

Pakistan’s parliamentary committee had rejected a bill against forced conversions in October last year, with the religious affairs minister Noor-ul-Haq Qadri at that time saying the environment was not favourable to bring a law against religious conversions.

He even went on to claim that a law against forcible conversions could disturb peace in the country and make minorities more vulnerable.

In 2016, Sindh province passed a law declaring forced conversion a punishable offence, but the region’s governor refused to ratify the legislation.

The New York-based credit rating company Moody's Investors Service has lowered Pakistan's local and foreign currency, senior unsecured debt, and rating from B3 to Caa1 due to heightened risks associated with government liquidity, external vulnerability, and debt sustainability.

In the midst of Pakistan's devastating floods, the New York-based rating agency stated that "the outlook remains negative," according to Dawn. For the foreseeable future, Pakistan's credit situation will continue to be very poor due to its long-standing issue with debt affordability.

After seven years, the country is now in the C-category due to the relegation (March 2015).

Pakistan vehemently disagreed with Moody's downgrade decision, claiming it was made unilaterally, was based on unreliable data, and did not accurately reflect the situation because of discrepancies and gaps in the available data.

Due to a delay in a contract with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for an economic bailout, Moody's also cut Pakistan's outlook in June from stable to negative.

Dawn newspaper quoted a statement from Moody's, "The decision to change the outlook to negative is driven by Pakistan's heightened external vulnerability risk and uncertainty around the sovereign's ability to secure additional external financing to meet its needs."

During the first 10 months (July to April) of the current fiscal year, Pakistan's current account deficit increased to USD 13.8 billion from a deficit of USD 543 million a year earlier.

The IMF reports that Pakistan's foreign exchange reserves decreased to USD 9.7 billion at the end of April, which is only enough to pay for imports for less than two months. In comparison, at the end of July of the previous year, there were USD 18.9 billion in reserves.

For the current fiscal year, Moody's predicted that the current account deficit would be 4.5–5 per cent of GDP, somewhat more than the government had anticipated.

In addition, Pakistan's next elections are scheduled for the middle of 2023. According to Moody's, it will be challenging for political parties to consistently execute major revenue-raising measures in the lead-up to the elections, especially in an environment with rising inflation.
