Oscars 2020: Saoirse Ronan becomes 2nd youngest actress to get four nods

This was Barack and Michelle Obama’s production company Higher Ground’s first film but it has already earned itself an Oscar nomination. The Academy revealed its nominations list for this year as their film ‘American Factory’ made its place in Best Documentary category.

‘American Factory’ is a thought-provoking documentary about a culture clash at a manufacturing plant in Ohio.

Announcing the same, Barack posted on Instagram and wrote, "Oscar nominations came out today and I'm glad to see 'American Factory's' nod for Best Documentary. I like this film for its nuanced, honest portrayal of the way a changing global economy plays out in real lives. It offers a window into people as they actually are and it's the kind of story we don't see often enough. This is exactly what Michelle and I hope to achieve through Higher Ground."

Singer and actress Jennifer Lopez's performance in 'Hustlers' was widely discussed for its powerful storyline and performance. Based on the true story of a ring of women who drugged and swindled rich men at strip clubs, the film had Lopez delivering a fine performance and most had predicted that she would be nominated in Best Supporting Actress category instead Kathy Bates made a surprise entry in the list for her role in 'Richard Jewell'.&nbsp; 
 
"The big surprise of the day has to be Jennifer Lopez not getting a best supporting actress nomination," said Variety chief film critic Owen Gleiberman. "There was just so much buzz about it, so much expectation. A lot of people thought she was going to win."

Murphy's portrayal in 'Dolemite is My Name,' was touted as a comeback of sorts for the comedian and actor and was hailed as his finest in recent times. The man was honoured with best actor nomination at the Golden Globes but did not impress the Academy. &nbsp;

Two-time Oscar winner De Niro was nominated as a producer of 'The Irishman,' which will compete for best picture with 8 other films but acting in the gangster epic did not get a mention in the actor's list. 2020 Oscars nominations: 7 snubs that took everyone by surprise

It's one of those Oscar seasons where the names are big and the movies are fun enough for a lot of people- other than film junkies.

Headlining the event is a box-office smash. And not just any other money-spinner. One that dominated conversations across the board. With 11 nominations 'Joker' is the one film that's the biggest draw of them all.

Why? Well whenever the wider audience has seen the nominated films, there's automatically more interest. Will it win? <a href="https://www.wionews.com/photos/2020-oscars-nominations-best-actor-273985">Is it worth an Oscar</a>?

Case in point 1998. The year of 'Titanic' dominated the Oscars. An entire generation of Oscar watchers was born that pivotal year.

'Titanic' was a movie event like no other. There have been big-budget movies before, but this one came in the age of TV.

It was nominated for 13 Oscars and ended up taking home 11. At par with the other Hollywood epic- 'Ben-Hur'.

People watched 'Titanic' in the theatres. And then watched it create history on TV. A whole lot more people on TV, than at the time of 'Ben-Hur' for sure.

While almost nothing compares to 'Titanic'- Todd Philips' 'Joker' is what you call a bona fide box-office success. And it received positive critical reviews as well!

However, it has been a serious contender in the awards circuit. I feel in the coming days, 'Joker' is what every Oscar click-bait article is going to be about online.

But apart from 'Joker', there have been other films that have caught the audience's fancy this year. Like 'The Irishman' and 'Marriage Story'.

Both these films were produced by and released on Netflix. And hence in the digital age, they have become the most talked-about films. Despite having only a token theatrical run.

Quentin Tarantino's 'Once Upon A Time In Hollywood' is another well-watched film this year much like 'Ford V Ferrari'. While the former is touted to win Best Picture, the latter is unlikely to win anything at all.

Sam Mendes' film '1917' arrived at just the right time with all the right buzz.

A $100+ million World War I epic has been directed the same filmmaker who has won an Oscar for 'American Beauty' and scored a box-office bombshell for 'James Bond' with 'Skyfall' in the past.

It won the top honours at the Golden Globes days before it premiered worldwide. Talk about timing!

Incidentally, there is talk that this was the Hollywood Foreign Press Association providing back up for an expensive film without any stars in it.

But the Academy Awards jury too has bestowed it with 10 nominations. So that's that!

2020 is also the year when a Non-English film is poised to create history. The first film from South Korea to be nominated for a Best Picture Oscar. 'Parasite' has been nominated for 6 Oscars. Including Best Director and Best Original Screenplay.

This has been widely regarded as 'The Film' of the season, year, decade etc.

The film's director and star Roberto Benigni became the first non-English speaking actor to win the Best Actor Oscar. His antics at the awards ceremony was one for the ages. That film too had won the Cannes Grand Prix award before the Oscars.

It's one of those Oscar seasons where the names are big and the movies are fun enough for a lot of people- other than film junkies. Headlining the event is a box-office smash. And not just any other money-spinner. One that dominated conversations across the board. With 11 nominations 'Joker' is the one film that's the biggest draw of them all. Why? Well whenever the wider audience has seen the nominated films, there's automatically more interest. Will it win? Is it worth an Oscar? Case in point 1998. The year of 'Titanic' dominated the Oscars. An entire generation of Oscar watchers was born that pivotal year. 'Titanic' was a movie event like no other. There have been big-budget movies before, but this one came in the age of TV. It was nominated for 13 Oscars and ended up taking home 11. At par with the other Hollywood epic- 'Ben-Hur'. People watched 'Titanic' in the theatres. And then watched it create history on TV. A whole lot more people on TV, than at the time of 'Ben-Hur' for sure. Cut to 2020. While almost nothing compares to 'Titanic'- Todd Philips' 'Joker' is what you call a bona fide box-office success. And it received positive critical reviews as well! Followed by a raging debate on its morality. However, it has been a serious contender in the awards circuit. I feel in the coming days, 'Joker' is what every Oscar click-bait article is going to be about online. But apart from 'Joker', there have been other films that have caught the audience's fancy this year. Like 'The Irishman' and 'Marriage Story'. Both these films were produced by and released on Netflix. And hence in the digital age, they have become the most talked-about films. Despite having only a token theatrical run. Quentin Tarantino's 'Once Upon A Time In Hollywood' is another well-watched film this year much like 'Ford V Ferrari'. While the former is touted to win Best Picture, the latter is unlikely to win anything at all. Sam Mendes' film '1917' arrived at just the right time with all the right buzz. A $100+ million World War I epic has been directed the same filmmaker who has won an Oscar for 'American Beauty' and scored a box-office bombshell for 'James Bond' with 'Skyfall' in the past. It won the top honours at the Golden Globes days before it premiered worldwide. Talk about timing! Incidentally, there is talk that this was the Hollywood Foreign Press Association providing back up for an expensive film without any stars in it. But the Academy Awards jury too has bestowed it with 10 nominations. So that's that! 2020 is also the year when a Non-English film is poised to create history. The first film from South Korea to be nominated for a Best Picture Oscar. 'Parasite' has been nominated for 6 Oscars. Including Best Director and Best Original Screenplay. This has been widely regarded as 'The Film' of the season, year, decade etc. It won the prestigious Palm D'or at Cannes in 2019 while on its way to the Oscars. Here's a quick flashback. Jamie Foxx stayed out of the Oscars diversity debate at the London premiere of his new movie 'Just Mercy' on Wednesday (January 15).

We're happy about the NAACP award, the SAG award, but all of that goes into the pot of making sure that 'Just Mercy' gets out there, and then there's also a level of respect for the people that are nominated. We don't want to cloud their moment. You know what I mean? It's like this is their time, they put the work in. "I think honestly for awards, we don't make movies for that.....This is the nominees' moment, they work extremely hard on their films and we don't want to be a part of that dialogue, taking away from anything that they have going on. So any awards, any nominations that come our way when it comes to this movie, it just adds to the message, it adds to the movie that we are trying to make, the message that we are trying to say," he said.

It tells the story of his fight to free wrongly accused Alabama death row inmate Walter McMillian, played by Foxx.

The film chronicles Stevenson's efforts to wade through the legal and political morass that put McMillian, convicted of the murder of a white female store clerk, on death row for six years in Alabama, and fight the racial bias that kept him, and others like him, there. He was eventually freed when his conviction was overturned by the Alabama Court of Criminal Appeals in 1993.&nbsp;

Disney's 'Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker,' fell to second place after a month in first with a take of $15.1 million. The finale of the nine-film 'Skywalker Saga' has now taken in a global total just shy of $1 billion. 
 
In third, down one spot from last weekend, was Sony's action sequel 'Jumanji: The Next Level,' which earned $14 million for third place in the Friday-through-Sunday period. It stars Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson and Kevin Hart.
