<p>Nearly a fortnight after launching ‘Operation Kaveri’ to bring back stranded citizens from the conflict-ridden country of Sudan, the Indian government on Friday wrapped up the evacuation programme.</p>

<p>The Indian Air Force C130 flight brought the final batch of 47 passengers home which culminated the&nbsp;highly laborious and dangerous operation. In total, 3,862 people were moved out of Sudan, informed&nbsp;External Affairs Minister (EAM) S Jaishankar on Twitter.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"An Indian Air Force C130 J flight carrying 47 passengers has landed in India. With this arrival, 3862 persons have been moved out of Sudan through #OperationKaveri," said Jaishankar.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The EAM also appreciated the countries that helped New Delhi evacuate its citizens safely.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"From Jeddah, airforce and commercial flights have brought people home. We are grateful to Saudi Arabia for hosting them and facilitating this process. Also appreciate the support of Chad, Egypt, France, South Sudan, UAE, UK, USA and UN," he added.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The Indian Air Force chauffeured 17 flights from Sudan while five Indian Navy ships were also involved in the evacuation process.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Jaishankar&nbsp;lauded Union Minister of State for External Affairs V. Muraleedharan, who was present in Saudi Arabia to oversee the rescue efforts. Muraleedharan's presence on the ground was a source of strength and reassurance, he said.</p>

<p>The evacuation programme&nbsp;‘Operation Kaveri’ was launched by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi,&nbsp;named after one of the major rivers from South India, on April 24.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The violent civil war between the Sudanese Army and the paramilitary forces that started last month has led to the death of more than 500 while over 4,000 have been injured.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The two warring factions were allies once as they seized power together in 2021. However, the proposed integration of RSF into the army did not sit well with the former. This led to a power struggle and has since metamorphosed into a full-blown civil war. Khartoum has witnessed the fiercest battles with the fighting spreading across the country as well.</p>

<p>According to the Indian Air Force, the C-17 aircraft departed from the Hindon Air Force Station, near New Delhi, on the intervening night of May 3rd and 4th.&nbsp;The heavy-lifter aircraft made a pit stop in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, where keeping in mind the challenges of refuelling in its conflict-hit destination, Sudan, it tanked up on extra fuel.</p>

<p>This mission was undertaken to repatriate 192 passengers - mostly women, children and elderly individuals, who were either NRIs, foreign nationals or OCIs (Overseas Citizens of India). The military aircraft had to fly from Jeddah to Sudan and then directly back to India in a non-stop flight, as the passengers were not permitted to land in Jeddah.</p>

<p>Given the ongoing conflict in Sudan, the military aircraft performing repatriation flights are landing at their own risk and must undertake necessary measures for their safety. As part of the daring mission, the C-17 aircrew, as per the IAF, "carried out an overhead steep tactical arrival followed by an assault approach to land the heavy jet."&nbsp;</p>

<p>IAF Spokesperson Wing Commander Ashish Moghe explained to WION that the steep landings are performed in order to safeguard from the threats of small-arms fire from the ground.&nbsp;</p>

<p>While flying back from Sudan to India, the C-17 crew faced another unplanned emergency when one of the passengers fell unconscious. However, the crew immediately handled the situation and stabilised the patient by providing him with oxygen. IAF said that the C-17 carrying 192 passengers from Sudan landed at Ahmedabad late Thursday evening and then at the home base of Hindon, later that night. The C-17 Globemaster III flew close to 9600 km as part of this mission, with the aircrew flying extended duty periods of nearly 24 hours.</p>

<p>The Sudan crisis continues to escalate and considering the current security situation in the African country, India has temporarily relocated its embassy from the violence-hit capital city of Khartoum to Port Sudan.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Indian Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said on Tuesday: "In view of the prevailing security situation in Sudan, including attacks in Khartoum city, it has been decided that the Indian Embassy in Khartoum will be temporarily relocated to Port Sudan."&nbsp;</p>

<p>"The situation will be assessed in the light of further developments," the MEA further added. Port Sudan is a port city on the Red Sea in eastern Sudan and is located at a distance of around 850 kilometres from Khartoum.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The embassy was shifted after news agency Reuters reported that India's embassy in Khartoum was stormed and looted, Sudan's army said in a statement, citing a report from the ambassador. But the incident hasn't been conformed by India yet.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The report further added that Saudi Arabia's foreign ministry said early on Wednesday that its building in Khartoum that houses its cultural mission was similarly vandalised and looted by an armed group.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Under the evacuation programme, Indians stuck in Sudan are being brought back home in either commercial flights or the IAF's aircraft. Separate control rooms have been&nbsp;set up in Jeddah and Port Sudan.</p>

<p>The Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) announced a seven-day ceasefire. But Reuters reported that there were more air strikes and shooting in the capital region, undercutting the latest supposed truce.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The UN migration agency said that some 330,000 Sudanese have also been displaced inside Sudan's borders by the war and about 800,000 people could eventually leave.&nbsp;</p>

<p>On Monday, a total of 186 Indians from Sudan arrived in southern India's Kochi city in Kerala state.</p>

<p>The Indian government is working to evacuate nearly 3,000 Indians from conflict-ridden Sudan, of which so far more than 2,500 have been successfully moved out.&nbsp;</p>

<p>On Monday, three more flights carried 229, 288 and 135 Indian citizens from Sudan.</p>

<h2><strong>Sudan conflict: What is happening?</strong></h2>

<p>Sudan's army and its paramilitary Rapid Support Force (RSF) are battling out intense armed combat across the Sub-Saharan nation.</p>

<p>The two sides were jointly running the country since October 2021 after deposing President Omar al-Bashir. The two banded together a Sovereign Council, led by Army Chief General Abdel al-Burgan and co-led by the RSF Chief General Mohamed Hamdan Daglo.</p>

<p>On Monday, the people of Sudan braced for more bloodshed after rival military forces accused each other of fresh violations of a ceasefire on Sunday.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Both sides said a formal ceasefire agreement which was due to expire at midnight would be extended for a further 72 hours, in a move the RSF said was "in response to international, regional and local calls".</p>

<p>Reports of prison breaks amid the conflict have gripped the country, stoking speculations related to the revival of Sudan's political Islamic movement.&nbsp;</p>

<p>So far, neither side has gained control of the capital Khartoum.</p>

<p>Of the 229 evacuees, 125 hailed from the southern state of Karnataka, according to a statement issued by Karnataka State Disaster Management Authority Commissioner Manoj Rajan.&nbsp;“From the latest group of evacuees, 29 were quarantined,” he said.</p>

<p>Jaishankar once again took to Twitter later in the day to inform that another batch of 40 Indian onboard a C-130J Indian Air Force flight had landed in the capital city of New Delhi.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>What is happening in Sudan?</strong></h2>

<p>The violent civil war between the Sudanese Army and the paramilitary forces has led to the death of more than 500 while over 4,000 have been injured,</p>

<p>Earlier, the United Nations Human Rights Commission (UNHRC) and World Food Programme (WFP) said that between 10,000 to 20,000 people had fled to the neighbouring country of Chad to seek refuge as the violence escalated.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The fighting broke out earlier this month. The two warring factions were allies once as they seized power together in 2021. However, the proposed integration of RSF into the army did not sit well with the former. This led to a power struggle and has since metamorphosed into a full-blown civil war. Khartoum has witnessed the fiercest battles with the fighting spreading across the country as well.</p>

<p>Braving&nbsp;all odds, including a bad airstrip and poor night vision, Indian Air Force personnel on the intervening night of 27 April and 28, rescued 121 people from Wadi Sayyidna in Sudan in an IAF C-130J heavy-lift aircraft.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The airstrip is about 40 km north of the violently tumultuous Sudanese capital of Khartoum.</p>

<p>The surface of the airstrip had deteriorated. There was no fuel or navigational help, and most importantly, there were no landing lights, which are necessary to guide an aircraft landing at night. But brave IAF personnel made use of NVGs, or night vision goggles, to successfully land at the airstrip and rescued the people.&nbsp;</p>

<p>A pregnant lady was among those who did not have transportation to Port Sudan, the main transit hub from which the Indian government is rescuing its residents using military aircraft and navy ships. All were safely rescued.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“Approaching the airstrip, the aircrew used their Electro-Optical/Infra-Red sensors to ensure that the runway was free from any obstructions and no inimical forces were in the vicinity. Having made sure of the same, the aircrew carried out a tactical approach on Night Vision Goggles, on a practically dark night,” the IAF reportedly said.</p>

<p>“Upon landing, the aircraft engines were kept running while eight IAF Garud Commandos secured the passengers and their luggage into the aircraft. As with the landing, the take-off from the unlit runway was also carried out using NVGs. This approximately two-and-a-half-hour operation between Wadi Sayyidna and Jeddah will go down in the annals of IAF history for its sheer audacity and flawless execution — akin to that carried out in Kabul,” the IAF added.</p>

<p>India began "Operation Kaveri" to rescue its citizens who were stranded in Sudan. The army of Sudan and the paramilitary have been engaged in violence for a power grab that has allegedly claimed hundreds of lives.</p>

<p>On Friday, a second batch of the C-130J flight carrying 135 trapped Indians departed the crisis-stricken nation, the 12th batch travelling to Jeddah.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Indian Foreign Secretary Vinay Kwatra said on Thursday (April 27) that there are approximately 3,500 Indians and 1,000 Persons of Indian Origin (PIO) in Sudan, adding that New Delhi is constantly monitoring the situation in the conflict-torn country. Addressing a press conference, Foreign Secretary Kwatra said, "Our estimate is that there are approximately 3500 Indians &amp; 1000 PIOs in Sudan."</p>

<p>"As we speak, we have a situation that roughly 600 Indian nationals have either arrived in India or are on their way. So, 360 of them arrived on a Saudi Arabia flight yesterday night. Another 246 (Indian nationals) are being flown to Maharashtra. Approximately, 495 Indian nationals were in Jeddah as of now. These numbers will either go up or come down depending upon the evacuations," Kwatra added.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The Indian government has launched "Operation Kaveri" to bring back Indians stranded in Sudan. <strong><a href="https://www.wionews.com/india-news/watch-touchdown-delhi-360-indians-evacuated-from-war-torn-sudan-reach-capital-via-flight-586441">On Wednesday night</a></strong>, the first aircraft carrying 360 Indians to Saudi Arabia from Sudan took off from Jeddah Airport and arrived in New Delhi. Taking to Twitter, External Affairs Minister (EAM) S Jaishankar said, "India welcomes back its own. Operation Kaveri brings 360 Indian Nationals to the homeland as first flight reaches New Delhi."</p>

<p>And on Thursday, Union Minister of State for External Affairs V Muraleedharan said that as many as 128 Indians arrived in Saudi Arabia's&nbsp;Jeddah.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"Another IAF C-130J flight under #OperationKaveri arrived at Jeddah with 128 Indians, the fourth aircraft from Sudan. Efforts are on to ensure that all Indians, who arrived in Jeddah will be sent to India at the earliest," Muraleedharan tweeted.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Earlier, MEA spokesperson Arindam Baghchi tweeted that nearly 1,100 Indians were evacuated from Sudan.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The North African country has been in conflict since April 15 after fighting broke out between the Sudan Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). Sudan is under a 72-hour ceasefire which started on Tuesday.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>Sudan army approves extension of ceasefire</strong></h2>

<p>On Wednesday, Sudan army chief General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan gave initial approval to a plan to extend the ceasefire for another 72 hours and sent an army envoy to Juba for talks, the news agency Reuters reported early Thursday. There was no immediate response from the RSF to the proposal.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Also on Wednesday- the second day of the initial agreed ceasefire- witnesses reported heavy air strikes in East Nile. Speaking to the news agency AFP, &nbsp;the witnesses said that warplanes flew over the northern suburbs of Khartoum, drawing heavy anti-aircraft fire from the paramilitaries.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In southern Khartoum, machinegun fire was reported near one of the homes owned by paramilitary commander Mohamed Hamdan, who is leading the RSF against the armed forces.&nbsp;</p>
