Train collision in India's Odisha, one of the deadliest accidents in the country, led to a significant loss of lives. At least 261 people have been killed, and the toll may go up further, while over 900 have been injured. Such devastating accidents highlight the need for robust safety measures and the continuous improvement of infrastructure and operational protocols to prevent train collisions and ensure the safety of passengers and railway personnel.

The Indian Railways and relevant authorities constantly strive to enhance safety standards and implement advanced technologies like automatic train protection systems to prevent such accidents.
It is a cost-effective solution that has received Safety Integrity Level 4 (SIL-4) certification, ensuring a high level of safety with an extremely low probability of error (1 error in 10,000 years). As part of the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative, the goal is to implement Kavach on a network spanning 2,000 kilometres in the 2022-23 period. This expansion will not only enhance safety and capacity but also create opportunities for exporting this indigenous technology to other railways around the world.

India train wreck: 207 reportedly dead after Coromandel Express derails in Odisha's Balasore, over 900 injured

The government in the Indian state of Odisha imposed a ban on the use of cannabis at all shrines of the Hindu Lord Shiva across the state on Tuesday, officials said. The step has been taken ahead of the Kanwar Yatra which takes place in monsoon months.

In a letter sent to all superintendents of police and district collectors, the director of the Odia Language Literature and Culture department Dilip Routray directed the officials to adopt necessary measures to ban the use of cannabis at the temples of Lord Shiva.

The directive was issued by the state government after an appeal was made by social activist Padmashri Baba Balia on stopping the use of cannabis at all shrines of Lord Shiva.

“I had written a letter to the government requesting a ban on Ganja at Shiva shrines. Cannabis can be offered as an offering at the shrine but should not be distributed among devotees for consumption. The ban will curb health hazards among the youth,” Baba Balia stated.

Chief servitor of the Akhandalamani temple of Aradi in Bhadrak district Bijay Kumar Das said that he was upset by the imposed ban imposed.
This year, Rushikulya shore in Odisha's Ganjam district has seen a record-breaking 6.37 lakh Olive Ridley sea turtles arrive for mass nesting, breaking the previous record of 5.5 lakh.

As per Berhampur Divisional Forest Officer Sunny Khokkar who spoke to the Hindu, the development of new beaches for egg-laying close to the Podampetta region was the reason behind the arrival of 6.37 lakh turtles from February 23 to March 2, which is considered the peak nesting time.

Khokkar said, this year, the beaches remained unaffected as there were no extreme weather events such as cyclones and heavy rain and turtles ascended perfectly sloped beaches at the Rushikulya river mouth. Last year, 5.5 lakh Olive Ridley turtles had come to Rushikulya for mass nesting.

“The actual number of Olive Ridleys coming to Rushikulya river mouth would go up as turtles keep coming to the coast after March 2. The forest division has stepped up its supervision to prevent turtle mortality by deploying forest officials.

How does an Olive Ridley lay eggs?

Olive Ridley turtles spend hours at a stretch digging burrows in the sand with their front flippers. They then sweep sand out of the hollow using their hind flippers to form a cavity. A large number of eggs are laid at once, and they are then again covered with sand. The turtles lay their eggs, which would hatch after 40–60 days, and then depart for the sea just before daybreak. In the months of April and May, the hatchlings are anticipated to break the surface of the eggs.

Odisha's Health and Family Welfare minister Naba Kishore Das died of a bullet injury, news agency PTI reported quoting officials from the Apollo hospital in Bhubaneswar.

Odisha's Health and Family Welfare minister Naba Kishore Das died of a bullet injury, news agency PTI reported quoting officials from the Apollo hospital in Bhubaneswar. The health minister of India’s southeastern Odisha state was shot at by a policeman from point-blank range in Brajarajnagar town on Sunday afternoon. Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik has expressed deep shock and distress over the unfortunate death of Das. "He was an asset for both the government and the party. His death is a great loss to the state of Odisha," the CM said. “Das was admitted with gunshot wounds on his left chest. On operating, it was found that a single bullet had entered and exited the body, injuring the heart and left lung and causing massive internal bleeding and injury. The injuries were repaired, and steps were taken to improve the pumping of the heart. He was given urgent ICU care. But despite best of efforts, he could not be revived and succumbed to his injuries,” said the statement issued by Apollo hospital in Bhubaneswar. Naba Kishore Das, a 60-year-old politician from the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) party and said to be a confidante of the chief minister Naveen Patnaik, was getting out of his car to attend a meeting when Assistant Sub-Inspector Gopal Das fired at him. According to reports, Das suffered injuries on the left side of his chest, while another policeman, who was standing guard, was also injured. "Assistant Sub-inspector of Police (ASI) Gopal Das opened fire at the minister, who sustained bullet injuries," Brajrajnagar SDPO Gupteswar Bhoi told reporters. The accused ASI was nabbed by locals, who then handed him over to the police, the officer said. The ASI was being interrogated, and more details will be available after a thorough probe. The minister was initially taken to the Jharsuguda district headquarters hospital and was then airlifted to Bhubaneswar in an air ambulance and admitted to Apollo Hospital.
The landfall process commenced around 6 p.m. between Kalingapatnam in Andhra Pradesh and Gopalpur in Odisha as the cloud bands entered the coastal region. The process will continue for next two to three hours, said the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

In Srikakulam district, authorities evacuated 1,100 people from low-lying areas and shifted them to 61 relief centres.

Two teams of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and four teams of State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) have arrived in the region as the meteorologists have warned that heavy rainfall could lead to floods.

The entire coastal region has been put on alert in view of the impact of cyclone. The district administration have opened control rooms monitor the situation.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke to Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy and took stock of the situation arising in the wake of cyclone. The PM tweeted that he assured all possible support from the Centre. "I pray for everyone`s safety and well-being," Modi wrote

Indian naval ships and aircraft are on standby for rescue and relief operations in the areas likely to be affected by the cyclone.

The Navy is closely monitoring the movement of the cyclonic storm. Headquarters, Eastern Naval Command, and Naval Officers-in-Charge Odisha area have carried out preparatory activities to combat the effects of cyclone and are in constant liaison with the state administrations for rendering assistance as required, an official release said.

In Bhubaneswar, Met Centre scientist U.S. Das said that the cyclone will have major impact on Ganjam and Gajapati districts of Odisha.

Besides, districts like Rayagada, Malkangiri, Koraput, and Nabarangpur would also witness heavy windfall of 55-65 kmph gusting to 75 kmph, Das added.
