India and Norway will sign an agreement on Tuesday to facilitate dialogue to boost bilateral trade, which currently stands at USD 1.2 billion.

Addressing the India-Norway business summit, Solberg said Norway sees great scope for partnerships with India in business, trade, and investments and the country's new strategy for engagement with India reflects its significance.

"The aim of the new strategy is to strengthen Norway's bilateral relations and economic ties with India. Private sector engagement, research and technical cooperation are key components of the strategy," she said.

Commerce Minister Suresh Prabhu said while addressing summit said, "we should try to think about how can we increase it (bilateral trade) substantially in the next few years time and therefore, tomorrow we will be signing (an agreement to facilitate) a dialogue between India and Norway, between my ministry and my counterpart ministry to actually take it to a new level".

"I am sure the dialogue will ensure that we look at all possible solutions to take it (trade) forward and make it better," he added.

"We also look forward to signing an FTA, there are several rounds (of negotiations) which have taken place, you are a part of the grouping (EFTA) and we really look forward to that concluding soon which will provide a framework for bilateral trade to grow," Prabhu said.

India and the EFTA countries (Switzerland, Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein) are working on the nuts and bolts of the pact, officially dubbed as the Trade and Economic Partnership Agreement (TEPA).

Observing that Norway and India are both ocean states and closer cooperation in this field will benefit both countries, Solberg said the Ocean Dialogue between Norway and India will be an important tool to bring this cooperation forward.

Business entities from the two nations signed 15 MoUs across various sectors including finance, ICT, health-care, energy and aquaculture, among others, in the presence of the prime minister.

She observed that "big possibilities" exist for Norwegian companies in India, especially in the energy sector.

Stressing that open and free trade is crucial for economic growth, Solberg said, predictable and stable framework conditions are vital for attracting foreign investment to any market.

The Norwegian prime minister, further said efforts are on to ensure that the trade and economic partnership agreement between EFTA (European Free Trade Association) and India is finalised soon as it will contribute to increased trade and a better environment for businesses from the two nations.

"We also support a rule-based multilateral trading system, open markets and lower trade barriers. A stable global framework for trade and investment is vital for both our countries, especially in times like today where we are seeing increased protectionism in certain markets," she said.

Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the summit, the Norwegian prime minister said she is pleased to meet her Indian counterpart during the visit.

"I think he (Prime Minister Narendra Modi) has done a tremendous job on a lot of social issues in India and he keeps a high knowledge of sustainability in the international political discussions. I hope that we also would have a platform for political cooperation in the years to come," Solberg said.

In her absence, Norway have qualified for next year's Women's World Cup in France. However, it does not look as if Hegerberg will be at the biggest tournament in the sport as she pointed out the difference in how she is treated at club level to the international stage.

"The male players are treated as our colleagues (at Lyon)," she told the Players Tribune website.

"It’s that simple. Isn’t that the way it should be everywhere? Every female player deserves the same opportunity to develop. There’s so much talent out there all over the world that deserves a chance to shine.

"Football federations, are you listening? We can do better."

Hegerberg has scored 38 goals for Norway but has not played since the team crashed out of the group stage at the European Championships in 2017 without netting once.

Following her award win in Paris, she said several changes would need to be made in Norwegian football for her to return without expanding on what those would be.

A ceremony was held on Sunday to officially open Norway's second largest bridge which has been built by a Chinese company and its partners and is located some 220 kilometres inside the Arctic Circle.

With a total length of 1,533 meters and a free span of 1,145 meters, the Halogaland Bridge near Norway's northern port city of Narvik is the longest suspension bridge within the Arctic Circle.

China's Sichuan Road and Bridge Group (SRBG) delivered the steel constructions and was responsible for the mounting of the bridge, which contributes to a significant shortcut on the European route E6 -- the main north-south road through Norway and the west coast of Sweden.

Despite the extreme cold temperatures, local people came out in droves to witness the opening of the bridge.

"We have been waiting for this bridge for many years and now is the day. So we are very happy and very lucky to get this bridge," said Floda Nicolaisen, a local resident.

"I think it's been great to see Chinese participation in this project. When we see the bridge now, it really shows a beautiful bridge that is very important in the local community," Norwegian Prime Minister Erna Solberg told reporters at the inauguration ceremony on the Halogaland Bridge over the Rombaken fjord.

The Chinese Ambassador to Norway Wang Min, who was also present at the ceremony, said the bridge has shown Chinese companies' efforts to carry out the Belt and Road Initiative.

"I say this bridge is a great event in the relationship between China and Norway, and an important practice of the two’s joint efforts to build the Belt and Road Initiative. It is an important result of the mutually beneficial cooperation between China and Norway and will set an important example of our bilateral economic and trade cooperation, especially when it comes to Chinese companies in Norway. In 2013, SRBG won the steel contract for the bridge in a tough competition with some of the world's other leading building firms.

The steel contract includes the preproduction of all the parts - cables and steel boxes and on-site construction. The production of the steel parts was carried out in four different factories in China.

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg had said earlier that Europe's security environment had significantly deteriorated in recent years, while asserting that, "Trident Juncture sends a clear message to our nations and to any potential adversary."&nbsp;

"NATO does not seek confrontation but we stand ready to defend all allies against any threat," the NATO chief added.

The mega military drill is reportedly taking place 198 kilometres away from Norway's border to Russia in the far north.

Meanwhile, head of NATO's Allied Joint Force Command said "any fears on the part of the Russian Federation are unfounded," adding,"we defend, we deter, we don't take somebody else's territory. That's not our intent and they are not the focal point of this exercise."

Last month, Russia had conducted a military exercise, Vostok-2018, along with Chinese and Mongolian troops along China's border which involved over 300,000 troops.

Russian foreign ministry had said last month that NATO countries were increasing their military presence in the region, "near Russia's borders". "Such irresponsible actions are bound to lead to a destabilisation of the political situation in the North, to heighten tensions," the foreign ministry spokesman had said.

Norway will release a Russian suspected of spying, the country's intelligence agency announced Friday, adding that it had withdrawn its appeal against his release.

Mikhail Bochkarev, 51, was arrested on September 21 at Oslo airport after attending a seminar in Norway's parliament, accused of having collected data on the building and its network.

A Norwegian court ordered his released on Thursday, the judge ruling that investigators had failed to substantiate their case. But Bochkarev was kept in custody after the PST intelligence agency appealed the decision.

On Friday however, the agency tweeted: "The PST has decided to withdraw its appeal. He is released today." They offered no explanation for the decision.

There had been speculation that Bochkarev might be used as leverage in efforts to obtain the release of a Norwegian held in Russia on suspicion of spying, although the PST has denied any connection between the two cases.

Frode Berg was arrested in April and is still waiting trial. Berg admitted to having helped the Norwegian intelligence services by acting as a courier several times.

Russia had denounced the charges against Bochkarev as "false" and "absurd", summoning the Norwegian ambassador in Moscow in protest.

Russia, a very strong competitor was banned by IOC from participating. Germany has currently bagged 25 medals and the USA has 21 medals in total. Though Germany and Norway have the equal number of&nbsp;gold medals but the total tally is very different, Norway leads the way with a margin of 11 medals in total.

Most of the American media is confused that how a country with a population of five million, is beating nations with comparatively high population and more sound infrastructure and facilities.

The USA has shown mediocre results at the Pyeongchang Olympics 2018&nbsp;and this might a situation when the USA needs to stop comparing the results of Summer Olympics&nbsp;with Winter Olympics and invest more in facilitating Winter sports.

The index ranks 165 independent states and two territories on the basis of five categories: electoral process and pluralism, civil liberties, the functioning of government, political participation and political culture. The list has been divided into four broad categories -- full democracy, flawed democracy, the hybrid regime and authoritarian regime.

The US (ranked 21), Japan, Italy, France, Israel, Singapore, and Hong Kong have also been named among &#39;flawed democracies&#39;.

The EIU is the research and analysis division of the UK- based media behemoth The Economist Group. Created in 1946, the EIU describes itself as having over 70 years of experience &quot;in helping businesses, financial firms and governments to understand how the world is changing and how that creates opportunities to be seized and risks to be managed&quot;.

The top three positions on the list are occupied by Nordic countries -- Norway, Iceland and Sweden. New Zealand is at fourth and Denmark at fifth place, while others in top-ten include Ireland, Canada, Australia, Finland and Switzerland.

Only top-19 countries have been classified as &#39;full democracies&#39;, while the hybrid regimes include Pakistan (110th), Bangladesh (92nd), Nepal (94th) and Bhutan (99th).

Those named as &#39;authoritarian regimes&#39; include China (139th), Myanmar (120th), Russia (135th) and Vietnam (140th).

North Korea is ranked the lowest at 167th, while Syria is a notch better at 166th place.

The authorities there have restricted freedom of the press, closed down several newspapers and heavily controlled mobile internet services. Several journalists were murdered in India in 2017, as in the previous year,&quot; it noted.

In the 2017 Democracy Index, the average global score fell from 5.52 in 2016 to 5.48 (on a scale of 0 to 10). Some 89 countries experienced a decline in their total score compared with 2016. 27 recorded an improvement. The other 51 countries stagnated, as their scores remained unchanged compared with 2016.

Almost one-half (49.3 per cent) of the world&#39;s population lives in a democracy of some sort, although only 4.5 per cent reside in a &quot;full democracy&quot;, down from 8.9 per cent in 2015 as a result of the US being demoted from a &quot;full democracy&quot; to a &quot;flawed democracy&quot; in 2016.

Almost one-half (49.3 per cent) of the world's population lives in a democracy of some sort, although only 4.5 per cent reside in a "full democracy", down from 8.9 per cent in 2015 as a result of the US being demoted from a "full democracy" to a "flawed democracy" in 2016. Speaking to a local news website, George said,&nbsp;&quot;It&#39;s not true that you have to live healthy to grow old. I have eaten and drank what I wanted throughout my life. I was a big smoker until I reached my forties, but I still have to have a glass of wine every day. It thins out the blood. But I make sure not to drink too much.&quot;

George gave up smoking in 1953 but still drinks a glass of wine every day.&nbsp;

He added that positivity in life goes a long way and said, &quot;I&#39;ve always had a good mood. One must almost have to live, especially in my age. Once upon a time I had a neighbor who was always mad and angry, so I do not want it. If so, you&#39;re angry with life too.&rdquo;

Norway's oldest man, 107, drinks a glass of wine every day

As Norway completed its transition to digital radio on Wednesday it became the first country in the world to shut down national broadcasts of its FM radio network. The transition to digital radio from FM began on January 11.

Most of Norway&#39;s northern regions and the Svalbard archipelago in the Arctic switched to Digital Audio Broadcasting (DAB) in the late morning, said Digitalradio Norge (DRN) which groups Norway&#39;s public and commercial radio.

The transition was initiated with an aim to facilitate better sound quality, a greater number of channels and more functions at a cost that was estimated to be roughly eight times lower than FM radio.

The transition concerns only national radio channels. Most local stations continue to broadcast in FM.&nbsp;

The move has been met with some criticism with many pointing toward the insufficiency in DAB coverage across the country.

Radio users have also complained about the cost of having to buy new receivers or adapters, usually priced around 100 to 200 euros ($117 to $235).

Reportedly, only 49 percent are able to listen to DAB in their cars. Another report stated a drop in the number of Norwegians radio listeners by 10 percent in one year.&nbsp;

In a statement carried by AFP, Ole Jorgen Torvmark, Head of DRN, talked about the change that the locals in Norway will have to embrace. &quot;After each shutdown (in a region), we noticed that the audience first dropped but then rose again,&quot; he added.

Countries like Switzerland, Britain and Denmark are due to follow suit in the coming years.

International Emmy Awards 2017 took place on Monday night at the Hilton New York hotel.

Lockheed Martin Corp will work with the U.S. government as it talks to Germany about a replacement for its Tornado fighter jets, its chief executive said on Thursday, adding she believed Lockheed&rsquo;s F-35 would be the &ldquo;best choice&rdquo; for Berlin.

Germany is kicking off the process of replacing its 85 Tornado jets, which will go out of service around 2030. The programme could be worth billions of euros in coming years. The German air force last month issued a formal request for information about the F-35, as well as three other jets: the F-15 and F/A-18E/F, both built by Boeing Co, and the European Eurofighter Typhoon.

On Wednesday, the chief of staff of the German air force said the country needed a &ldquo;fifth-generation&rdquo; replacement for its Tornado fighters that is hard to detect on enemy radars and can strike targets from a great distance. Lieutenant General Karl Muellner&rsquo;s comments indicated a preference for the F-35, which meets those requirements.

&ldquo;I saw in the media that there is an interest in the F-35, and we stand ready to support the U.S. government on their interactions with the German government on their assessment of the F-35,&rdquo; Lockheed CEO Marillyn Hewson told Reuters during a visit to Norway. &ldquo;I do think it would be the best choice for them,&rdquo; she added. She was non-committal when asked how many planes Lockheed could potentially sell to Berlin, saying it was up to Germany.

Lockheed Martin also hopes to increase its sales of the F-35 to South Korea, Hewson said. &ldquo;Their initial buy is at 40 (aircraft), but I hope that over time they will look at additional buy,&rdquo; she said. &ldquo;We are happy that the F-35 is being considered by a number of countries around the world ... Countries like Belgium, Finland, Canada and others are going to continue to look at the programme and make their decision,&rdquo; she added.

Many German allies in Europe, including Norway, the Netherlands, Britain, Italy, Turkey, and Denmark have selected the F-35 and some have received initial deliveries. Belgium is expected to make a decision next year.

Norway on Friday urged US President-elect Donald Trump to enunciate a clear and predictable policy on Russia as soon as possible, amid growing concerns in Oslo about increasing Russian military activities in the &quot;High North&quot; or Arctic region.

Pakistani and Chechen-origin jihadists jailed in Norway

The teenager who shot dead nine people at a Munich shopping mall spent a year planning the rampage but selected his victims at random, officials said today. 
 
Details are emerging of gunman David Ali Sonboly as a depressed 18-year-old who was obsessed with mass killings and had long struggled with his mental health. 
 
Friday&#39;s shooting spree sparked a terror alert, with Europe on edge following a string of attacks claimed by the Islamic State group, but investigators have ruled out that Sonboly had any link with the jihadists. 
 
However, he appears to have planned the assault with chilling precision, with Bavarian police chief Robert Heimberger telling a press conference today that Sonboly had visited the site and taken photos during a year of preparation. 
 
Chief prosecutor Thomas Steinkraus-Koch added that the gunman had not &quot;deliberately selected&quot; his victims, dismissing speculation that Sonbaly sought to target foreigners. 
 
Most of the dead -- who were mainly teenagers -- were foreign nationals. They included a Turk, two Turkish-German dual nationals, a Hungarian, a Kosovan and a Greek, according to police. 
 
Sonboly killed himself after his murderous spree with the 9 mm Glock pistol he had bought on the internet. 
 
His attack, which began at a McDonald&#39;s branch, also left 35 people injured.

Details are emerging of gunman David Ali Sonboly as a depressed 18-year-old who was obsessed with mass killings and had long struggled with his mental health. Friday's shooting spree sparked a terror alert, with Europe on edge following a string of attacks claimed by the Islamic State group, but investigators have ruled out that Sonboly had any link with the jihadists.
