Eight countries have denounced North Korea's human rights record after a closed-doors videoconference at the UN Security Council organised by Germany.

The list of countries includes the United States, France, Britain, Japan, Estonia, Belgium and the Dominican Republic.

"The situation of human rights in the DPRK is appalling and gets worse by the day," the eight said in a joint declaration read by German ambassador Christoph Heusgen, referring to North Korea by the initials of its formal name.

"Individuals in the DPRK are stripped of nearly all their human rights, their freedoms of expression, peaceful assembly, association, movement, and religion or belief, among many others," the statement said.

"Media freedom is non-existent, neither is there any possibility of a political opposition to the regime's tight grip on its people," it added.

The joint declaration was particularly critical of North Korea's "long-standing system of political prison camps where hundreds of thousands of North Koreans, including children, have died as a consequence of torture, forced labor, summary executions, starvation, sexual and gender-based violence and other forms of inhumane treatment."

It added that "as we speak, 100,000 prisoners are being detained, suffering from the horrors of being maltreated and abused on a daily basis."

"The multiple and grave human rights violations women are subjected to by the hands of the State, in particular sexual and gender-based violence, are unimaginable. They must stop immediately," the eight states demanded.

They also called for the release of "abducted Japanese and South Korean citizens."

It concluded that "the dire, if not tragic situation of the North Korean population is due exclusively to the regime's cynical policies, putting nuclear weapons first and food for its people last."

Between 2014 and 2017, the UN Security Council held an annual public meeting on human rights violations in North Korea.

Since 2018, opposition by Russia, China and a small number of members of the council has prevented these public sessions.

American analyst: North Korea's Kim and his family receives experimental Corona Vaccine

China has provided North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and his family with an experimental coronavirus vaccine, a US analyst said on Tuesday, citing two unidentified Japanese intelligence sources.

Harry Kazianis, a North Korea expert at the Center for the National Interest think tank in Washington, said the Kims and several senior North Korean officials had been vaccinated.

It was unclear which company had supplied its drug candidate to the Kims and whether it had proven to be safe, he added.

"Kim Jong Un and multiple other high-ranking officials within the Kim family and leadership network have been vaccinated for coronavirus within the last two to three weeks thanks to a vaccine candidate supplied by the Chinese government," Kazianis wrote in an article for online outlet 19FortyFive.

Citing US medical scientist Peter J. Hotez, he said at least three Chinese companies were developing a coronavirus vaccine, including Sinovac Biotech Ltd, CanSinoBio and Sinophram Group.

Sinophram says its candidate has been used by nearly one million people in China, although none of the firms was known to have publicly launched Phase 3 clinical trials of their experimental COVID-19 drugs.

Some experts doubted that Kim would use an experimental vaccine.

"Even if a Chinese vaccine had already been approved, no drug is perfect and he would not take that risk when he has numerous shelters which can ensure almost complete isolation," said Choi Jung-hun, an infectious disease expert who defected from North Korea to the South in 2012.

Mark Barry, an East Asia analyst and associate editor of the International Journal on World Peace, said Kim would prefer proven European vaccines to one supplied by Beijing.

"The risk is too great. But he's happy to get Chinese personal protective equipment," Barry said on Twitter.

North Korea has not confirmed any coronavirus infections, but South Korea's National Intelligence Service (NIS) has said an outbreak there cannot be ruled out as the country had trade and people-to-people exchanges with China - the source of the pandemic - before shutting the border in late January.

Microsoft said last month that two North Korean hacking groups had tried to break into the network of vaccine developers in multiple countries, without specifying the companies targeted. Sources told Reuters they included British drugmaker AstraZeneca.

The NIS said last week it had foiled North Korea's attempts to hack into South Korean COVID-19 vaccine makers.

China gave Covid-19 vaccine candidate to North Korea's Kim Jong Un: US analyst

South Korea's intelligence agency said it foiled the North's attempts to hack into its companies developing coronavirus vaccines.

North Korea has so far not confirmed any coronavirus infection.

Ha Tae-keung, a member of the parliamentary intelligence committee, said after being briefed by the National Intelligence Service (NIS) that the agency did not specify how many and which drugmakers were targetted but said there was no damage from the hacking attempts.

The revelation came after Microsoft said early this month that hackers working for the Russian and North Korean governments tried to break into the networks of seven pharmaceutical companies and vaccine researchers in Canada, France, India, South Korea and the United States.

The closed-door briefings by the NIS which shares intelligence and analyses with other key neighbours provide rare public access to information about the reclusive North.

Ha and another member Kim Byung-kee said North Korean leader Kim Jong Un had taken some "unreasonable" action due to a COVID-19 "paranoia."

That included banning fishing and salt production because the seawater might have been contaminated with the virus, and stranding some 110,000 tons of rice from China in the northeastern Chinese port of Dalian.

Diplomats from Seoul and Beijing vow to work on North Korea, COVID-19

North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un's nephew has reportedly been taken into protective custody by the intelligence service officials of the United States.

Kim Han-sol is the son of Kim's half-brother Kim Jong-Nam - who was murdered on orders of the dictator using a nerve agent in 2017.

It has been claimed that the exiled 25-year-old — who is said to live a life of lavish luxury — is now in hiding after surrendering to American intelligence services.

Kim Han-sol is young, college-educated, and fluent in English and living abroad. And he has called his uncle a dictator. But chances are slim he could ever lead his homeland.

Kim Han-sol is the eldest son of Kim Jong-Nam and a grandson of the former North Korean ruler Kim Jong-il. His father was the unofficial heir apparent until 2001, when he fell out of favour with the regime after a failed attempt to secretly visit Japan's Disneyland in May 2001.

While Han-sol was seeking asylum in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, his current location is unknown, and it is believed that he was intercepted by CIA agents.

Earlier this year, North Korea has passed a law according to which pre-school children must spend 90 minutes a day to learn about the country leader Kim Jong-un as a part of their curriculum.

Local newspapers reported that the new diktat on ‘greatness education’ aims at “cultivating loyalty and trust toward North Korea's leadership”.

North Korea dubs UN nuclear watchdog a 'dancing marionette of the West'

North Korea has decided to ban smoking in some of the public places to promote a healthy lifestyle for its citizens, the state media KCNA reported.

The decision was taken on Thursday by North Korea's Supreme People's Assembly to promote "hygienic living environments" in the country.

As per the law, the consumption of tobacco has been prohibited in some of the public spaces. These areas are important and very specific venues such as the majority of the political institutions, ideological education centres, theatres and cinemas, and medical and public health facilities.

The country took the decision after it was observed that North Korea has a very high rate of people who smoke tobacco. As per a report by the World Health Organisation, nearly 43.9 per cent of men in the country are chain smokers as of 2013.

The North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, too, is a chain smoker and has often been photographed with a cigarette bud in his hand during his public appearances or inspections. He has also photographed taking a smoking break at a railway station in the southern Chinese city of Nanning in 2019 on his way to Hanoi, while on his way to meet the US President Donald Trump for a summit. As per the new rule, the legal and social control of the state on the production and sale of tobacco has also been tightened.

A North Korean man was captured by South Korea's military on Wednesday after crossing the inter-Korean border, Seoul said.

The man was identified by Seoul only as a North Korean male, the Joint Chiefs of Staff said in a statement.

Investigations will be conducted "in cooperation with related agencies for details", it added, including whether the man sought to defect to the South.

No unusual activity of the North's military has been detected, it said.

Last year, a North Korean soldier made a river crossing of the Demilitarised Zone that divides the peninsula.

More than 30,000 North Koreans have escaped to the South since the two were separated by war more than 65 years ago, according to Seoul government data, many of them driven by prolonged economic hardship.

But the vast majority have gone first to the North's neighbour and ally China before making their way to the South, usually via a third country.

Only a few have dared to cross the DMZ, which is riddled with landmines and has a heavy military presence on both sides.

In November 2017, a North Korean soldier dashed through the border village of Panmunjom in a hail of gunfire from his own side. The trooper, then 24, was hit several times but survived.

The latest crossing comes days after the North placed the blame for its killing of a South Korean fisheries official last month on Seoul's "improper control of the citizen", and inter-Korean relations remain in a state of deep freeze.

Seoul has called for a joint investigation after the North said it burned a floatation device he was using, not his body, amid public and political outrage.

The North's official KCNA news agency accused South Korean opposition lawmakers of stoking controversy over the issue, blaming Seoul for failing to stop him from crossing the maritime border into the North.

"Our soldier could not but take self-defensive measure as he judged that the South Korean citizen who had made an illegal intrusion into the waters ... under the control of our side was about to flee, not responding to interception," KCNA said.

The incident was "the result of improper control of the citizen by the south side in the sensitive hotspot at a time when there are tension and danger due to the vicious virus sweeping the whole of South Korea," it added.

North Korea on high alert due to yellow dust coming from China

US Defense Secretary Mark Esper on Wednesday said North Korea's nuclear and missile programs pose a global threat, after Pyongyang's unveiling of previously unseen intercontinental ballistic missiles at a predawn military parade.

The appearance of a new intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) during a weekend parade in North Korea captivated many Western analysts. But officials in South Korea were far more concerned by the display of new multiple launch rocket systems (MLRS) and fast, maneuverable short-range missiles that would be ideal for striking targets in the South.

Speaking before the start of a meeting with his South Korean counterpart at the Pentagon, Esper said; "We agree that North Korea's nuclear and ballistic missile programs remain a serious threat to the security and stability of the region and the world."

"The United States remains committed to the security of the Republic of Korea," Esper said.

He added, however, that South Korea and the United States must find a more equitable way of sharing defense costs so it "doesn't fall unequally on the American taxpayers."

South Korean officials have seized on conciliatory comments by North Korean leader Kim Jong Un on the weekend as a sign that tension could be easing but also worry the huge number of rockets he showcased is evidence that peace may be elusive.

November's US election is compounding the uncertainty especially as the tone of ties between the two Koreas is often set by the state of North Korea's relations with its old enemy the United States.

When a landmark summit between Kim and US President Donald Trump in 2018 brought an unprecedented easing of tension between those two countries, North Korea's dealings with South Korea also saw a remarkable thaw.

But relations on the peninsula have been tense since a second summit between Kim and Trump collapsed last year, and they took another blow last month when North Korean troops shot dead a South Korean fisheries official detained at sea.

'Crocodile tears'

Shin Beom-chul, a senior fellow at the Korea Research Institute for National Strategy in Seoul, said despite Kim's conciliatory comments towards South Korea, his main message on Saturday was aimed at the United States.

"By showing a new ICBM, the North suggested they can test it any time if things don't go well after the election. Inter-Korean ties don't count to them," Shin said.

The South Korean government said Kim's speech would foster better ties but it urged North Korea to stick to agreements preventing armed clashes and accept a request for a joint investigation into the shooting of the fisheries official.

South Korean opposition leader Kim derided a teary display by Kim as he spoke of the sacrifices made by North Korea's armed forces.

"It was appalling to see him shed crocodile tears after shooting our citizen to death," he said.

'I am really sorry': Kim Jong-un weeps and issues rare apology over failings

According to experts the new missile North Korea put on show at a military parade is an explicit threat to US defences and an implicit challenge to both the current and next American president.

North Korea's explicit threat to US, new ballistic missile unveiled

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un presided over the 75th anniversary of the founding of the ruling Workers' Party on Sunday where tens of thousands of dancers, gymnasts and others performered in a large-scale celebration.

The party's newspaper, Rodong Sinmun, on Monday published a photograph of Kim, flanked by top aides at a long banqueting table, waving to the audience.

State broadcaster KCNA said Kim was greeted by loud cheers as he made his entrance on Sunday for the "Grand Mass Gymnastics and Artistic Performance, 'Great Guidance'."

The event came a day after an unprecedented nighttime military parade, which showcased an unusually broad array of the country's new weapons.

North Korea revived the Mass Games in 2018, following a five-year hiatus, to sell an image of international engagement and peace while raising much needed foreign currency.

Despite the name, the Mass Games are large performances involving tens of thousands of dancers, gymnasts, martial artists and singers acting out familiar propaganda themes.

The North Korea national flag and the Workers' Party flag were hoisted to musical numbers on Sunday including "The Workers' Party Is Our Guide" and "Along the Road of Socialism", KCNA reported.

The games are usually a major draw for tourists, most of them from China, but rights groups say the inclusion of thousands of child performers is tantamount to forced child labour, and testimony collected by defector groups describes harsh training regimes.

The games went ahead this year despite strict border controls and quarantine measures imposed to prevent an outbreak of the coronavirus. Analysts say that would be devastating for the economically and politically isolated country, which is yet to report any confirmed cases of COVID-19.

Kim and his official entourage were not wearing masks in the Rodong Sinmun photograph of Sunday's event, in contrast to the crowds of suited spectators in the large stadium behind them.

North Korea hosts Mass Games for 75th anniversary of ruling party

After North Korea displayed its latest intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) at a military parade in Pyongyang on Saturday, the United States has expressed its disappointment over this chest-beating parade.

"It is disappointing to see the DPRK (North Korea) continuing to prioritize its prohibited nuclear and ballistic missile program," a US official said.

The official urged the North Korean leader to follow the agreement that the two countries had back in 2018. "The United States remains guided by the vision President Trump and Chairman Kim set forth in Singapore (in 2018) and calls on the DPRK to engage in sustained and substantive negotiations to achieve complete denuclearization."

The statement has come at a time when the two countries, led by Donald Trumo and Kim Jong Un, are unable to reach a conclusion on the denuclearization negotiations since the collapse of their Hanoi summit early last year over sanctions relief and what the North would be willing to give up in return.

The missile -- which may have been a mock-up -- was carried on an enormous and previously unseen 11-axle transporter-erector-launcher, far larger than the eight-axle Chinese-made vehicles the North has employed so far.

The display was proudly observed by the North Korean leader a few weeks before the US elections that are scheduled for November 03.

Display of ICBM has received criticism from all over the world and is being seen as a violation of several requests and orders passed by the rest of the world to put an end to the development of its arsenal throughout the diplomatic process.

Analysts also said that it was the largest road-mobile, liquid-fuelled missile anywhere in the world, and was likely to be designed to carry multiple warheads in independent re-entry vehicles (MIRVs).

'Disappointing': US slams North Korea over ICBM display in military parade

During a pandemic, North Korea is gearing up for a celebration. Earlier this week, Pyongyang witnessed a concert. On Saturday, North Korea will stage a grand parade. Is Kim Jong Un trying to fight his troubles with ideology and propaganda? WION's Palki Sharma tells you more.

Gravitas: During a pandemic, North Korea gears up for a celebration

North Korea appears to have held a huge military parade early Saturday, the South's military said.

"Signs of a military parade -- involving equipment and people on a large scale -- were detected at Kim Il Sung Square early this morning," Seoul's joint chiefs of staff said in a statement.

The country was expected to parade its latest and most advanced weapons through the streets of Pyongyang on Saturday, as the coronavirus-barricaded country celebrates the 75th anniversary of leader Kim Jong Un's ruling party.

But unlike on many previous occasions, no international media are allowed in to watch the parade, and with many foreign embassies in Pyongyang closing their doors in the face of coronavirus restrictions, few outside observers are left in the city.

It also appeared that state broadcaster KCTV would not show the event live -- when it has done so the programme has always begun by 10 am local time (0100 GMT).

The events usually feature a speech by a dignitary, and the South's government detected signs that Kim was to address the crowd.

The anniversary comes during a difficult year for North Korea as the coronavirus pandemic and recent storms add pressure to the heavily sanctioned country.

South Korean and US intelligence agencies were "closely tracking the event", the South added.

Meanwhile, specialist service NK News cited multiple sources saying they had heard sounds of aircraft flying by, drones and heavy machinery during the early hours of Saturday morning.

A morning schedule announced by KCTV on Saturday included a documentary about Kim Il Sung titled "Our Dear Leader", a cartoon called "Boy General", and a programme on the North's waterfalls.

For weeks commercial satellite imagery has shown thousands of North Korean soldiers practicing marching, and South Korean officials have said the North could use a parade to unveil a new intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM), or a new submarine launched ballistic missile (SLBM).

The North is widely believed to have continued to develop its arsenal -- which it says it needs to protect itself from a US invasion -- throughout nuclear negotiations with Washington, deadlocked since the collapse of a summit in Hanoi in February last year.

Analysts expect a new submarine-launched ballistic missile (SLBM) or an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) capable of reaching the US mainland to appear -- maybe even one with multiple re-entry vehicle capabilities that could allow it to evade US defence systems.

The last time North Korea broadcast a military parade live on television was in 2017, when it showed off many large ICBMs amid heightened tension with the United States.

ICBMs were once again paraded in February 2018, but no international media were allowed to observe.

Pyongyang closed its borders eight months ago to try to protect itself from the virus, which first emerged in neighbouring China, and has yet to confirm a single case.

In a congratulatory message to Kim for the anniversary, Chinese President Xi Jinping said he intended to "defend, consolidate and develop" ties with North Korea, its state media said on Saturday.

North Korea defies coronavirus, appears to have held huge military parade: Seoul

Chinese President Xi Jinping congratulated Kim Jong-un on the founding anniversary of North Korea's ruling party, and said he intended to deepen relations with Pyongyang.

"We have an intent to successfully defend, consolidate and develop the China-Korea relations together with Korean comrades and propel the long-lasting and stable development of the socialist cause of the two countries," North Korean state news agency KCNA quoted Xi as saying.

Saturday marks the 75th anniversary of the founding of the ruling Workers` Party of Korea, and events are expected to include a large military parade that may feature some of North Korea`s long-range ballistic missiles for the first time since 2018.

Xi said he was "greatly pleased" with the achievements that North Korea had made in recent years by engaging with foreign countries in the face of hardships and challenges.

After years of cold relations during which China joined the United States and other nations in imposing sanctions on North Korea over its nuclear weapons and ballistic missile programmes, Xi and Kim met five times in 2018 and 2019. The North Korean diplomatic offensive included Kim meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump.

While North Korea says it has had no confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus, strict border closures and other measures it imposed to prevent an outbreak have further strained its economy, which is heavily reliant on trade with China.

Chinese President Xi Jinping intends to deepen relations with North Korea

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has addressed an unusual predawn military parade held in Pyongyang to mark the 75th anniversary of the founding of its ruling Workers’ Party.

North Korea holds anniversary parade: Kim Jong-Un addresses the nation

North Koreans wearing medical masks have gathered in the capital of Pyongyang, state media reported this week, ahead of what is expected to be a big military parade on Saturday, possibly featuring the country`s latest ballistic missiles.

The holiday marks the 75th anniversary of the founding of the ruling Workers` Party of Korea, and events include art and industry exhibitions, a light show, visits to monuments and ceremonies to mark the completion of construction projects.

Officials in South Korea and the United States say that North Korea could use the parade to show off a new intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM).

"There is a possibility that North Korea will unveil new strategic weapons, such as new intercontinental ballistic missiles or submarine-launched ballistic missiles, to draw attention at a time when its economic achievements have been sluggish," the South`s Unification Ministry, which handles relations with the North, said on Thursday.

Unification Minister Lee In-young told lawmakers that displaying a new missile could be a "low-intensity demonstration of force" ahead of the U.S. presidential election that would be less provocative than a launch or nuclear test.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has not displayed ICBMs at a parade since he first met U.S. President Donald Trump in 2018, but their talks have stalled and Pyongyang has signalled increasing impatience with Washington.

"The display of new ICBMs would signal that North Korea was moving on from this strategy and may indicate that North Korea will resume long-range missile testing," said Jeffrey Lewis, a missile researcher at the James Martin Center for Nonproliferation Studies.

State media outlets showed photos of large crowds of delegates and other visitors masks as they arrived for holiday events.

North Korea has not reported any confirmed cases of the coronavirus, but the government has imposed strict border controls and quarantine measures and analysts say an outbreak could be devastating for the economically and politically isolated country.

"Such an event is extremely risky in that if only a few people were COVID-19 positive in the crowd they could create a deadly super-spreader-like event," said Harry Kazianis, senior director of Korean Studies at the Center for the National Interest in Washington.
