After being pushed back by the Ukrainian troops for the better part of the last few weeks, Russia is gearing up for a comeback. Reportedly, Moscow on Sunday bombarded missiles and drones in the southern Ukrainian municipality of Mykolaiv, per a report by Reuters, destroying numerous apartment blocks in the process. "After the first blast, I tried to get out, but the door was stuck. After a minute or two, there was a second loud blast. Our door was blown into the corridor," a local was quoted as saying by the publication. Kremlin simultaneously issued a statement saying the war was heading towards an 'uncontrolled escalation'. According to the Russian defence ministry, Sergei Shoigu, the defence minister spoke to his French, British and Turkish counterparts and discussed the 'rapidly deteriorating situation'. Shoigu said Ukraine could escalate the situation with a "dirty bomb," a type of "radiological dispersal device" that combines a conventional explosive, such as dynamite, with radioactive material. "Everyone understands full well. They understand who is the source of all the dirty things imaginable in this war," said President Volodymyr Zelensky in his nightly message. The pounding of missiles, especially in the southern part of Ukraine comes in the backdrop of Russia evacuating its civilians from the Moscow-controlled region of Kherson in southern Ukraine. As reported by WION, Russian news agencies stated last week that an organised movement of civilians had started. "In Kherson, the organised movement of residents to the other side of the Dnieper has begun," said local media reports Russia's military commander for Ukraine operations admitted last Tuesday that the situation in the Kherson regions is "difficult" and Russian forces were planning a "safe evacuation". After the Kerch bridge was destroyed connecting Russia with Crimea, Putin's troops pounded Ukrainian cities with indiscriminate missiles. If the media chatter is to be believed, China is gearing up for a showdown with the United States over the neighbouring island nation of Taiwan. Reportedly, Chinese President Xi Jinping has re-appointed Zhang Youxia as the vice-chairman of the Central Military Commission. Apart from retaining his position in the CMC, Zhang has also found a seat in the Central Committee, which is regarded as the country's top leadership body. All the announcements were made after the end of the 20th CPC Congress. However, what suggests that China is gearing up for an offensive is that Xi broke the unofficial retirement age rule while selecting Zhang. The unwritten retirement age in China is 68 which Xi has used as a baseline throughout most of his tenure. However, Zhang is 72 and comfortably crossed the mark. Zhang may be old but he compensates for it in a way not many in the Chinese military can do. He is a veteran of the 1979 Sino-Vietnamese war and one of the few People's Liberation Army (PLA) generals to have combat experience. According to reports, Xi is willing to utilise Zhang's expertise to the fullest when he takes on US and Taiwan. Zhang knows the ins and out's of CMC which is China's military command, responsible for the services of over two million active personnel in the PLA. The appointment also comes in the backdrop of speeches made by Xi at the Congress. On multiple occasions, he evoked the Taiwan issue and threatened the western countries from interfering in its internal problem. Read more: 'Will never renounce force', says Xi Jinping on Taiwan during the party congress “The resolution of the Taiwan issue is a matter for the Chinese people themselves, to be decided by the Chinese people," said Xi during his opening remarks. The CCP leader added that China reserves the option of “taking all measures necessary” against separatist forces. “We will continue to strive for peaceful reunification with the greatest sincerity and the utmost effort. But, we will never promise to renounce the use of force. And we reserve the option of taking all measures necessary.” While Zhang gets the extended run, other Chinese bureaucratic officials have not been as lucky. As reported by WION, on Sunday, Chen Quanguo, the former party secretary of Tibet and Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region was shown the door by Xi from the Central Committee, despite being only 66-years-old. After turning into a category 4 storm on Saturday, Hurricane Roslyn on Sunday made landfall along Mexico's Pacific coast and left a trail of destruction. Reportedly, two people died on Sunday from the havoc caused by Roslyn as wind speed peaked at around 210 kmph. A 74-year-old man died after a beam fell on his head while a 39-year-old woman succumbed to injuries after a fence collapsed on her in the Rosamorada district. According to a Reuters report, Roslyn caused major damage to roofs and outdoor coverings. The state agencies informed that heavy rainfall is expected to continue and if people and authorities did not practice caution, it could lead to flash flooding and landslides in some regions. However, after the storm weakened with speeds ranging from 90 kmph to 31 kmph, it moved inland, according to the US National Hurricane Center (NHC). Read more: Hurricane Roslyn strengthens to Category 4, Mexico braces for landfall over the weekend NHC added that before reaching Texas, the hurricane may develop into a tropical depression. While the hurricane did not make a direct impact near Puerto Vallarta, it did manage to bring torrential rain and big waves, destroying the beachfront of several resorts. However, the busy Puerto Vallarta airport resumed operations on the same day. “The biggest effect was from the waves, on some of the beachside infrastructure. We did not have any significant damage," said Adrián Bobadilla, director, state civil defence agency. The beaches remained closed as NHC warned that the swells were "likely to cause life-threatening surf and rip current conditions." Prior to the landfall on Saturday, warnings were issued for Mexican states including Las Islas Marias, Jalisco and Nayarit, particularly the coastal regions. The states were advised that preparations “should be rushed to completion” to protect life and property. (With inputs from agencies) WATCH WION LIVE HERE:

A car bomb and shooting attack on a hotel in the Somali city of Kismayu killed nine people on Sunday before security forces ended the siege at the hotel and killed the attackers, a regional official said.

Gunfire erupted after an explosives-laden vehicle rammed into the gate of the port city's Tawakal Hotel.
The al Qaeda-linked al Shabaab militant group said it had carried out the attack.

"In the explosion, nine people including students and civilians were killed and 47 others were injured, some of them seriously," Yussuf Hussein Dhumal, Security Minister for Jubbaland, told Reuters.

"The hotel where the explosion happened was near a school, so many students were injured."

Security forces killed three of the attackers and a fourth died in the bomb blast, Dhumal said.

Before the attack, a meeting was being held at the hotel to plan how to fight al Shabaab, Farah Mohamed, a security officer, told Reuters from Kismayu.

Mohamed Nur, a police captain, and Farah Ali, a shopkeeper in Kismayu, told Reuters the blast at the hotel preceded the gunfire.

Video footage from the Somali National Television posted on its Twitter account showed security personnel load one of the wounded into an ambulance.

Abdiasis Abu Musab, al Shabaab's military operation spokesperson, said the group was behind the attack, which he said had targeted Jubbaland region's administrators who work from the hotel.

Kismayu is the commercial capital of Jubbaland, a region of southern Somalia still partly controlled by al Shabaab.
Al Shabaab was driven out of Kismayu in 2012.

The city's port had been a major source of revenue for the group from taxes, charcoal exports and levies on arms, and other illegal imports.

In 2019, a similar attack at another hotel in Kismayu killed at least 26 people.

The group is battling to topple Somalia's central government and impose its own rule based on a strict interpretation of Islamic Sharia law.

It has killed thousands of Somalis and hundreds of civilians across East Africa in a decade-long insurgency.

Somali security forces say they have made gains on the battlefield against al Shabaab in recent weeks while fighting alongside local self-defence groups, but the group has continued to carry out deadly raids.

Morning news brief: Rishi Sunak leads the PM race, China's Q3 GDP figures released and more

A day after the Communist Party of China (CPC) Congress ended with Xi Jinping securing a third term in the office, Beijing released its third-quarter gross domestic product figures. The data showed China's GDP grew by 3.9 per cent compared to the same period, a year ago.

While the GDP figure has definitely beaten expectations with experts estimating it to be around 3.4 per cent in their predictions, it is still much lower than the growth target of 5.5 per cent that the Chinese Politburo had set for itself.

This uptick in the GDP numbers is also significant as China, the world's second-biggest economy grew by a tiny 0.4 per cent in the second quarter (April-June) which was a two-year low for the country.

Such was the situation that several reports suggested that Beijing was not willing to discuss the GDP numbers at its quarterly economic meetings or even keep up with the year-end growth target of 5.5 per cent.

The real estate sector which has become the achilles heel for China saw investment decline of eight per cent, much greater than 7.4 per cent recorded in the first eight months of the year.

Why the slowdown in Chinese economy?

While countries across the globe are opening up their borders and economies after braving a pandemic, Beijing is employing draconian measures to keep up with its 'zero-Covid tolerance' policy.

Even during the 20th CPC Congress, Xi remained adamant that his 'zero-Covid' policy was the best practice and that it was indeed working. He did suggest that the country was moving forward to open up completely but stopped short of giving any definitive timeline.
