Chen Quanguo, the former party secretary of Tibet and Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region has been shown the door by Xi Jinping after the 20th Communist Party of China (CPC) Congress that closed on Saturday. Reportedly, Chen's name is missing from the newly elected Central Committee, which is regarded as China's top leadership body.

Chen, who is only 66, is much below the unofficial retirement age of 68 that Xi has used as a baseline throughout most of his tenure. The fact that Chen's ouster was deliberate can be gauged by the fact that 72-year-old Zhang Youxia, vice-chairman of the Central Military Commission has been kept in the committee while 69-year-old foreign minister Wang Yi also keeps his position.

The CPC leader is regarded by many as the architect of the 'Uyghur genocide' that continues to take place in the Xinjiang province in some shape or form even today.

However, prior to ruling the region with an iron fist, Chen ruled over Tibet as the CPC Committee Secretary from 2011 to 2016. He is the only person in CPC to have served as party secretary for both the autonomous regions.

As reported by WION, the Xinjiang Police Files, a document stolen from internment camps in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region had revealed the true extent of the campaign that Chen was undertaking.

The files contain information on more than 20,000 Uyghurs who are under detention. One of the documents is a speech given by Chen in May 2017 while serving as the party secretary for the region from August 2016 to December 2021.

According to him, the Chinese government's campaign of repression in Xinjiang was not intended to purge the region of criminals but rather was an "extinction war" against the Uyghur people. His description of the Uyghurs as an "enemy class" had led to criticism.

The former official further stated that those detainees who were given sentences of less than five years should be mobilised for "learning law" and "bilingual learning," and that they should only be released once they had attained a sufficient study level, regardless of how long that took.

As reported by WION, Xi Jinping on multiple occasions has made it clear that Islam can only exist in China if it is reformed according to Chinese orientation. And according to the documents, Chen was merely following the line set by the likes of Xi in the upper hierarchy.

His ouster, therefore, remains a mystery at this stage. Perhaps, Chen had served his purpose and was no longer beneficial for Xi who might attempt to take a much sterner stance against the minorities, having secured all but a third term for himself as the top leader of the party.

A few days after a study showed that chemical hair-straightening tools caused a rare type of cancer, a US woman has brought a lawsuit against L'Oreal, a French cosmetic giant for having contracted uterine cancer.

A few days after a study showed that chemical hair-straightening tools caused a rare type of cancer, a US woman has brought a lawsuit against L'Oreal, a French cosmetic giant for having contracted uterine cancer. Reportedly, Jenny Mitchell filed a civil lawsuit saying she had been using L'Oreal's chemical hair straightening products for more than two decades which caused uterine cancer and forced her to undergo a full hysterectomy. Under a hysterectomy, a woman's womb (uterus) is removed which means they cannot get pregnant after the operation. Ben Crump, an attorney representing Mitchell said his client sought damages from the French company, among others. Crump also added that Black women were particularly made the target of such dangerous products. "Black women have long been the victims of dangerous products specifically marketed to them," said Crump. "We will likely discover that Ms Mitchell's tragic case is one of countless cases in which companies aggressively misled Black women to increase their profits." Earlier, Black women across the US had also blamed Johnson & Johnson for selling talc-based powder that contained cancer-causing material like asbestos and was particularly marketed towards the dark-skinned demography of consumers. Read more: Johnson & Johnson to stop selling its talc-based baby powder globally in 2023 as lawsuits mount As reported by WION, in a new study published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute, it was shown that women who use chemical hair-straightening tools frequently are at a greater risk of a comparatively rare type of cancer. The study incorporated data from almost 34,000 women in the United States over a period of around 11 years (10.9 to be exact). Participants were aged between 35 to 74 years. "We estimated that 1.64 per cent of women who never used hair straighteners would go on to develop uterine cancer by the age of 70, but for frequent users, that risk goes up to 4.05 per cent," said Alexandra White of the US National Institute of Environmental Health Safety (NIEHS) and the lead author of the study. Read more: Hair straightening can lead to a threefold increase in the risk of this 'rare' type of cancer She added that it is important to put this information into context given that "Uterine cancer is a relatively rare type of cancer." The study did not find any racial linkages, but due to the fact that black women are more frequent users of these products and tend to start using them at a younger age, the researchers stress the importance the findings could have for them. Days after launching the application portal for student-loan forgiveness, the Biden administration has been dealt a blow. Reportedly, a US appeals court on Friday issued a stay on the plan, temporarily blocking the federal government from cancelling any loans. The eighth US Circuit Court of Appeals stayed the decision citing it was considering a request for an injunction under a lawsuit filed by a coalition of six Republican-led states viz. Arkansas, Iowa, Kansas, Nebraska, Missouri and South Carolina. Watch | Joe Biden's student loan deductions to affect already skyrocketing inflation? × Ever since the announcement regarding the programme was made, Republicans continue to claim that it is a waste of government funds that could be put to better use. White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre sounded optimistic despite the temporary halt and encourage the students to enroll themselves on the list. "We encourage eligible borrowers to join the nearly 22 million Americans whose information the Department of Education already has," said Jean-Pierre. "It is important to note that the order does not reverse the trial court's dismissal of the case or suggest that the case has merit," she added. "It merely prevents debt from being discharged until the (appeals) court makes a decision." Unveiled in August, the programme will provide a $10,000 relief for borrowers with salaries less than $125,000. For recipients of Pell Grants, the relief doubles to $20,000. As per news reports, the plan is going to cost the government an estimated $400 billion. A close aide of Kenyan President William Ruto has claimed that the two missing Indians in Kenya have been killed by the disbanded DCI unit, a media report said on Friday.

Zulfiqar Ahmad Khan and his friend Mohamed Zaid Sami Kidwai, who were part of the Kenya Kwanza digital campaign team, went missing along with taxi driver Nicodemus Mwania from Mombasa Road in July.

The two contributed immensely to the success of Ruto's campaign, said Itumbi, who was at the heart of Ruto's presidential campaigns, The Nation newspaper reported.

"Sometimes when our team was overwhelmed and we needed graphics, I sent (material) their way and they paused whatever they were doing and did me the favour," he said in a Facebook post.

"They visited Mombasa, Homa Bay, (Masai) Mara, nyama choma joints and loved our dance joints too. They invited me to India; I told them I would visit after (the) elections. Their eyes were primarily on enjoying Kenya as much as they could. When they sat down, they produced very appealing content," he added.

The revelation comes against a backdrop of the disbandment of the Special Service Unit (SSU), a group that has been accused of extrajudicial killings. The team is suspected to be behind the disappearance of the two Indians.

President Ruto ordered the disbandment of SSU last Saturday after a probe into the disappearance of the two Indians was linked to the unit, the report said.

A total of 21 detectives who served under the unit have been summoned to the Internal Affairs Unit (IAU) headquarters in Nairobi on Friday, it added.

And now Itumbi claims that the two Indians and their driver could be dead. He did not offer any proof, only promising a part two of his expose.

"As usual, they (Zaid and Khan) always did something extra. A meme here, a video there, a box quote and much more? We even had a Telegram group that rarely went silent, with endless ideas," he said.

Just two days before they returned to India, Itumbi recalled, he learnt that the duo had lost a phone during a night out.

"They could not be reached. Just the other day, I finally got to know their painful last moments in the hands of people whose only mission was to ensure Dr Ruto does not become President even if it means killing people," he said.

India has been in touch with the Kenyan authorities on the matter, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said in New Delhi last week.

"As far as we understand, there were two Indian nationals, Zulfiqar Ahmad Khan and Zaid Sami Kidwai, and they have been missing in Kenya since mid-July. A police complaint was filed there soon after that," MEA spokesperson Arindam Bagchi said.

"Subsequently, a habeas corpus petition was filed in the Kenyan court. We understand that the issue is now sub-judice in the high court of Kenya and a number of hearings have taken place," Bagchi added.

He said the Indian High Commission in Kenya has been in continuous touch with the Kenyan authorities.

"We are also, I think, in touch with some family members? We are keeping a close eye on the issue? I am afraid they're still missing," Bagchi said.

President Joe Biden is not ruling himself out of the race of giving another crack at the president's post. Biden said while he has not made a final decision just yet, it is his 'intention' to run again and that his wife thinks that he shouldn't walk away from it.

President Joe Biden is not ruling himself out of the race of giving another crack at the president's post. Biden said while he has not made a final decision just yet, it is his 'intention' to run again and that his wife thinks that he shouldn't walk away from it. “My wife thinks that we’re doing something very important, and I shouldn’t walk away from it,” said Biden, referring to the first lady and his wife Jill Biden. The US president made the statement in an interview at the Delaware State University in Dover. Biden added that he has time to make the decision. “The reason I’m not making a judgment about formally running or not running, once I make that judgment, a whole series of regulations kick in and I have to be – I treat myself as a candidate from that moment on. I have not made that formal decision, but it’s my intention – my intention to run again. And we have time to make that decision,” said Biden. If the Republicans, the current heavy favourites to win the House of Representatives manage to do so, the Democrats will have a difficult time passing important bills. Then, there is the age factor as well, At 79, Biden is already the oldest US president in history. By the next time, he will be well into his 80s. However, when quizzed about what his late son Beau would have said to detractors saying his dad is too old for the President's job, Biden said: “It’s not so much [what] he’d say to those people. What he’d say to me in my view. The only reason to be involved in public life is can you make life better for other people. And depending on who the opponent is, if they have a view that is such the antithesis of what I believe democracy and I believe is good for average Americans, then his argument was, dad, you have an obligation to do something.” If Biden does put his hand up for the presidential race, he might be up against Donald Trump yet again as the Republican has repeatedly flirted with the idea of a comeback. While Biden mulls the decision, a Harvard University poll conducted earlier this year showed that 71 per cent of Americans do not want Biden to run for re-election.
