Plastic pollution is a real problem, it is everywhere in our waters, in the soil and even in our blood. On Monday, representatives of around 200 nations met in Uruguay, determined to address the issue and bring about much-needed change.

"We know that the world has a significant addiction to plastic," said Inger Andersen, Executive Director of the Nairobi-based United Nations Environment Programme, at the start of the talks which aim to pave the way towards a global treaty to combat plastic pollution.

Addressing delegates Andersen said "A plastic crisis is also a climate crisis. Plastic has a heavy carbon footprint and a heavy chemical footprint."

The crisis as per experts can only be dealt with if an international, legally binding agreement backed by enough political will is in place.

AFP reports that as per estimates every minute plastic garbage amounting to a truckload is dumped into the sea, and it is predicted that by 2040 the amount will triple.

The meeting in Uruguay which will last for five days is the first step in the negotiations towards establishing a legally binding global plastics treaty as agreed upon during the UN Environment Assembly in Nairobi in March.

Questions like what should be included in the treaty, and the possible structure the two years of talks might follow are up for discussion.

As per Andersen the treaty's goal: to end plastic pollution is "ambitious" but "entirely doable". She said that delegates will come together to "transform the entire life cycle of plastic," starting with the production of polymers to how brands and retailers use plastic, right up to the waste produced.

"That means working with the private sector, that means working with environmentalists, that means working with communities, that means strong political leadership," she added.

Former United States president Donald Trump who is under fire for removing sensitive government documents from the White House while vacating it has now bragged about how he "openly and transparently" moved the confidential records to his own residence.

Taking to his social media platform 'Truth Social' Trump questioned "...When will you invade Bill and Hillary's home in search of the 33,000 emails she deleted AFTER receiving a subpoena from the US Congress?."

Branding the August search of his Florida house Mar-a-Lago an "invasion", he further alleged that other US presidents too "took" similar documents.

Sunday's victory was Morocco's first victory in the World Cup finals in over 24 years. However, it wasn't an easy task as the final scoreline suggests. The Atlas Lions had to dig in at the Al Thumama Stadium and absorb the pressure before making the incisive move, late in the game. Belgium, the 2018 WC semifinalists were shocked in the 73rd minute after substitute Abdelhamid Sabiri curled a whipping free kick towards goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois, who unfortunately could not move across the box in time. As Belgium sought an equaliser in the dying stages of the game, Morocco's talisman Hakim Ziyech measured an inch-perfect pass to Zakaria Aboukhlal who rifled the ball to the top of the net, completing the demolition job. While the Moroccan team created history on the pitch, the victory was soured by the off-field behaviour of the fans. According to reports, riots ensued in Belgian and Dutch cities after Moroccan fans gathered across to celebrate the victory. A video of the horrifying Christchurch attack circulating widely on Twitter has been removed, but only after being alerted by the New Zealand government.

The microblogging site had failed to recognise the content. A spokesperson for New Zealand's prime minister said the company's automated function didn't recognise the content as harmful.

Twitter fails to detect Christchurch attack video as 'harmful', New Zealand's govt reaches out

We are living in an age of misinformation. The sources of information are many, but the trustworthy ones are few. In this day and age of "fake news", "conspiracy theories", "deepfakes" and "trolls", the Merriam-Webster word of the year 2022 is "gaslighting".

The word is by no means new, but this year saw an ever-increasing interest in it, with over 1740 per cent increase in instances of people looking for its meaning.

What does 'Gaslighting' mean?

As per Merriam-Webster, there are two definitions of the word, but both of them have to do everything with disorientation, mistrust, manipulation and selfish motives.

One way to describe it is an "act or practice of grossly misleading someone, especially for one’s own advantage."

Another definition describes gaslighting as the "psychological manipulation of a person usually over an extended period of time that causes the victim to question the validity of their own thoughts, perception of reality, or memories and typically leads to confusion, loss of confidence and self-esteem, the uncertainty of one's emotional or mental stability, and a dependency on the perpetrator".

As per Psychology Today, "The “I’m sorry you feel that way” approach, along with avoiding an argument in lieu of admitting fault, is good old-fashioned gaslighting".

When was the word coined?

The origin story of gaslighting is interesting, to say the least. In 1938 British novelist and playwright Patrick Hamilton wrote a play, that tells the story of a dysfunctional couple.

It is a dark tale of "a marriage based on deceit and trickery", in which the husband Jack Manningham tries to steal from his wife Bella, resorting to antics that escalate to the point of driving her insane.

His mysterious activities in the attic cause the house's lights to dim. When Bella mentions the strange phenomenon, Jack insists that the lights are not dimming. the repeated denial makes Bella doubt her sanity.

This sinister story titled 'Gas Light' gave birth to many play and movie adaptations and the word "Gaslighting".

What are some examples of gaslighting?

Generally, the word is used in the context of romantic relationships that have inklings of psychological manipulation and resulting trauma.

However, as the word gains popularity, it is making appearances in other areas too.

"Medical gaslighting" has been used to describe doctors who inappropriately, unfairly dismiss patients' concerns.

The word gaslighting may be "in" right now, but remember, it remains a serious psychological manipulation that can make its victim suffer distress at a level where their self-worth suffers and they're "second-guessing everything".

If this article resonates with you and you think that you may be a victim of gaslighting, seek professional help; talking to a therapist can help you unravel and deal with the trauma.

If the chatter coming from the UK media is to be believed, Premier League giants Liverpool FC and its ownership have held talks with two consortiums based in West Asia.

If the chatter coming from the UK media is to be believed, Premier League giants Liverpool FC and its ownership have held talks with two consortiums based in West Asia. Both consortiums are believed to have a close working relationship with the respective Saudi and Qatari royal families. Fenway Sports Group (FSG) is the current owner of the Merseyside club and they have valued the club at around $4 billion. Banking giants Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley have been roped in to handle the club's takeover process in case their demands are met. According to the reports, FSG director Mike Gordon has been approached by the consortiums regarding the sale. Kingdom gives the green light Saudi Arabia’s sports minister Prince Abdulaziz bin Turki Al Faisal has already given the green light from the government, saying the kingdom will support the bids for the takeover. “If there’s an investor willing to do so and the numbers add up, why not? We will definitely support it if any [Saudi] private sector comes in because we know that’s going to reflect positively on sports within the kingdom," said Turki Al Faisal “From the private sector, I can’t speak on their behalf, but there is a lot of interest and appetite and there’s a lot of passion about football," he added. FSG put the club for sale Earlier this month, FSG put the club up for sale, 12 years after completing the takeover from Tom Hicks and George Gillett. "FSG has frequently received expressions of interest from third parties seeking to become shareholders in Liverpool. FSG has said before that under the right terms and conditions we would consider new shareholders if it was in the best interests of Liverpool as a club," read a statement released by FSG at the time. However, it was the supposed interest of Indian billionaire Mukesh Ambani that gained the maximum traction. Liverpool fans for long have been demanding that FSG sell the club as their 'buy-to-sell' policy has proved to be a bottleneck in Klopp's plans of refreshing the squad.
