Former US air force colonel Joseph Kittinger whose 1960 parachute jump from 32 km above the Earth set a world record died in Florida at 94. The cause was lung cancer. His death was announced by US congressman John Mica and friends on Friday (Dec 9).

Kittinger's jump was a world record for 52 years. This dates back to August 16, 1960, when he jumped into the New Mexico desert after his pressure suit malfunctioned and he fell from 102,800 feet, the Guardian reported.

He told Florida Trend magazine in 2011, "There’s no way you can visualise the speed. There’s nothing you can see to see how fast you’re going. You have no depth perception. If you'e in a car driving down the road and you close your eyes, you have no idea what your speed is. It's the same thing if you’re free falling from space. There are no signposts."

After his successful mission, he served in the air force. He served three tours of duty during the Vietnam war where he was shot down in 1972 but ejected.

‘America’s unknown child’: Philadelphia police identify boy found dead in a box 65 years ago

A dog was found in a bag during a security x-ray check at Dane County Regional Airport in Wisconsin on December 7, by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA). The TSA then sent it as a caution to passengers travelling with pets to follow the safety protocol.

The dog was a dachshund-chihuahua mix and was not harmed but was a "little skittish" after going through the security check.

The TSA on Twitter posted a picture and a video of the incident.

The post read, "A dog was accidentally sent through the X-ray @MSN_Airport this week. When travelling with any animal, notify your airline & know their rules. At the checkpoint, remove your pet from the bag and send all items, including the empty carrier, to be screened in the machine."

The post read, "A dog was accidentally sent through the X-ray @MSN_Airport this week. When travelling with any animal, notify your airline & know their rules. At the checkpoint, remove your pet from the bag and send all items, including the empty carrier, to be screened in the machine." Video: Here’s the proper way to travel with your pet. Note: This is a @TSA PreCheck passenger traveling with a cat. If you think your pet will attempt an escape, ask to speak with a supervisor before removing the animal. The animal could be having troubles breathing in that backpack. This is animal cruelty and the owner should be out in jail…" While another user commented, "A dog is not an "item". A new study has revealed that the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics which helps in shaping the US food policies has financial ties to the world's most renowned processed food companies.

The Academy has been criticised for its big ties. The report also reveals that the academy has quid pro quo with food giants and owns stock in processed food companies like Nestle and Pepsico. It was also headed by former industry employees.

Defending itself the Academy said that its an independent voice and a "trusted edcuational resource for consumers." It added that it provides information to over 110,000 dieticians in the country.

Ending a 15-year legal battle, a French court on Thursday (Dec 08) ordered Germany's crop chemical and pharmaceutical company Bayers to pay 11,135 euros ($11,700) to a farmer who inhaled fumes from a weedkiller.

However, the farmer and his supporting campaigners showed disappointment over the amount, saying that the money paid in compensation is very low in comparison to the side effects, Reuters reported.

Farmer Paul Francois said, "11,000 euros ($11,700) for so much sacrifice." He argued that the inhalation of weedkiller Lasso in 2004 caused him neurological problems such as headaches and memory loss.

A group of anti-pesticide associations said, "This type of ruling could discourage pesticide victims from claiming the responsibility of multinational firms."

Lawyers for both sides said that the court decided the amount for it to cover the temporary deficit and sufferings of the farmers considering the accident's post-traumatic stress.

For the last nine years, the Nigerian Army has allegedly run a "secret, systematic and illegal" abortion programme in the country's northeast. A report claims that the army forcefully terminated close to 10,000 pregnancies.

The Reuters investigation alleges that many of the women, and girls involved in this abortion programme were victims of rape and kidnapping at the hands of Islamic militants.

Most of these abortions were performed without the pregnant woman or girl's consent, many of which were as young as 12 years. Pregnancies ranging from two weeks to eight months were terminated.

The campaign relied on deception and physical force against women who were kept in military custody for days or weeks. Three soldiers and a guard said they commonly assured women, who often were debilitated from captivity in the bush, that the pills and injections given to them were to restore their health and fight diseases such as malaria.

In some instances, women who resisted were beaten, caned, held at gunpoint or drugged into compliance. Others were tied or pinned down, as abortion drugs were inserted inside them, said a guard and a health worker.

A US judge on Wednesday sentenced Ramesh "Sunny" Balwani, former Theranos Inc president and ex-boyfriend of its founder Elizabeth Holmes, to 12 years and 11 months in prison for defrauding the failed blood-testing startup's patients and investors.

Balwani as per AFP was found guilty of participating in what the prosecution claimed was a massive fraud perpetrated on Theranos investors and patients. His almost 13 years in prison, will be followed by three years of supervised release.

According to Reuters, the prosecution said that Balwani and Holmes tricked Silicon Valley investors into thinking that the company had developed miniature devices that could precisely execute a variety of diagnostic medical tests using a small amount of blood. However, the business secretly used conventional methods and gave patients false results.

United Nations on Thursday said that militant group M23 has executed 131 villagers in retaliatory killings in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo late last month as part of a campaign of murder, rape, kidnapping, and looting.

102 men, 17 women and 12 children "were arbitrarily executed with bullets or bladed weapons," said the UN in a statement, adding that "Eight people were wounded by bullets and 60 others kidnapped. At least 22 women and five girls were raped."

The atrocities in the villages of Kishishe and Bambo on November 29-30 were carried out in retaliation for fights between M23 and competing armed groups, according to a preliminary inquiry by the UN peacekeeping operation (MONUSCO) and the Joint Human Rights Office (UNJHRO).

However, due to security concerns, investigators were unable to visit the villages, so they instead conducted 52 interviews with victims and witnesses in the nearby town of Rwindi, which is roughly 20 kilometres (12 miles) from Kishishe, where survivors and witnesses had sought safety.

"MONUSCO condemns in the strongest terms the unspeakable violence against civilians and calls for unrestricted access to the scene and the victims for emergency humanitarian assistance," said the UN in its statement.
