As Covid cases continue to mount in China, countries across the world are opting for precautionary measures to avoid a repeat of the first wave. France, Spain, South Korea and Israel are the recent entrants to the list of countries to have announced different Covid curbs. In France, passengers travelling from China will have to show a negative report of Covid test done less than 48 hours prior to boarding the flight. Meanwhile, in South Korea, Chinese passengers will have to present a negative PCR or antigen test before boarding the flight. Afterwards, on their arrival in South Korea, the passengers will have to undergo a PCR test. As for Spain, Chinese travellers can skip the tests if they are fully vaccinated. In Israel, the authorities have directed foreign airlines to not accept any Chinese passenger if they fail to provide a negative Covid test report. Previously, Malaysia, India, US and Japan had put different measures in place to screen Chinese travellers. WATCH | Global alarm over China's Covid surge, travel curbs imposed on Chinese travelers × While cases are on an unprecedented rise, the Xi Jinping regime has let go of its draconian 'zero-Covid' policy, primarily responsible for the current predicament. The countries are anxious about Chinese travellers as the country is opaque regarding its Covid numbers and the Chinese vaccines and their efficacy continue to divide the scientists. Such has been the situation that the World Health Organisation (WHO) on Friday urged Beijing to release real-time data on the prevailing situation in the country. “WHO again asked for regular sharing of specific and real-time data on the epidemiological situation," said the global health body before adding, "Including more genetic sequencing data, data on disease impact including hospitalisations, ICU admissions and deaths, and data on vaccinations delivered and vaccination status, especially in vulnerable people and those over 60 years old." Read more: WHO asks China to share real-time COVID-19 data amid uncertainty regarding numbers According to a Bloomberg report, the minutes of an internal meeting of the NHC held earlier this month showed that 248 million people, or nearly 18 per cent of the country's population, likely contracted Covid in the first 20 days of December. If reports are to be believed, pharmaceutical giants such as Pfizer, AstraZeneca PLC, GlaxoSmithKline, Sanofi and Bristol Myers Squibb may be gearing up to increase the price of over 350 medicines in the US in early January.

If reports are to be believed, pharmaceutical giants such as Pfizer, AstraZeneca PLC, GlaxoSmithKline, Sanofi and Bristol Myers Squibb may be gearing up to increase the price of over 350 medicines in the US in early January. The rise in price has been anticipated following the passing of the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) by the Biden administration. Under the act, the government will negotiate prices directly for some medicines. Medicines are extremely expensive in the USA, compared to other countries because the pharma companies are allowed to set prices without any interference from the government or any related agency. Read more: US: FDA approves most expensive drug ever, costs $3.5 million per dose However, IRA attempts to change the status quo and thus pharma companies are attempting to get ahead of the curve, according to healthcare research firm 3 Axis Advisors which made the prediction. The pharma companies are expected to swing hard at the beginning; meaning the launch prices of the medicines will be kept high so as to offset inflation and avoid unnecessary press by the annual price increases. "Drug makers have to take a harder look at calibrating those launch prices out of the gate...so they don't box themselves into the point where in the future, they can't price increase their way back into profitability," Antonio Ciaccia, president of 3 Axis was quoted as saying by Reuters. WATCH | Gravitas: FDA approves life-changing therapy for Diabetes × The price increase comes on the back of pharma giants raising the price of over 1,400 medicines in 2022. Pfizer has increased the price of 89 medicines while GSK has increased the price of 26 unique medicines. According to reports, the median medicine price increase hovered around 4.9 per cent while the average increase stood at 6.4 per cent. This is the highest increase in the price of medicines since 2015. While most pharmaceutical companies keep the price hike under 10 per cent, the frequent hikes throughout the year manage to take the price beyond the reach of the users. The UAE is making efforts to make private jobs and business easier for its citizens.

The government has urged private firms to hire local talents to reach at least 10 per cent by the end of 2026. Companies that fail to recruit at least two per cent of nationals by next month will face a fine, AFP reported.

Not just this, the UAE has also announced that it will implement a year-long paid leave for citizens working in the public sector to start their own businesses. The measure is expected to begin from January 2, 2023. The individuals will be paid half of their salaries for a year.

The announcement was made by the ruler of Dubai, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, vice president and prime minister of the country to encourage more businesses.

In a tweet, Sheikh Mohammed tweeted, "Today, within the Council, we decided on sabbatical leave for citizens working in the government who wish to run their own businesses. The leave lasts for a full year, with half the salary, while preserving the job. Our goal is to encourage our youth to take advantage of the huge business opportunities offered by our national economy."

Home to over nine million people, the International Labour Organisation claimed that only 12 per cent of nationals are recruited in the private sector with over 85 per cent taken by foreign nationals.

UAE like any other country always advocated for the public sector as an employment vehicle for its citizens. But time is changing now.

The government also announced income support of AED 7,000 ($1,900) for citizens who joined the private sector and have an income of less than AED 30,000.

However, no minimum wage has been decided for Emiratis. But in Sharjah, a minimum salary of AED 25,000 has been entitled.

Despite having one of the lowest employment rates in Middle East Asia, data showed that Emiratis are not publicly available. The rate climbed to 4.2 per cent in 2019 from 2.5 in 2012.

Many experts believe that with this measure government is trying to make citizens alter their expectations, and work for long hours with less salary.

An Emirati researcher at Oxford said that discontent in the country has been increasing especially after the govt scrapped the laws capping foreign ownership at 49 per cent.

The debate sparked further after an advertisement for a "sandwich maker" at a Subway store was criticised prompting govt probe later. A user on Twitter said, "The lack of administrative, financial and technical jobs has led to 'sandwich maker'... Oh, what an age!"

The project will involve a multipronged strategy such as synchronised surveys to estimate numbers of Nilgiri Tahr individuals through the use of radio telemetry, radio collaring etc. The project will also have a major component to restore the fragmented habitats of the Tahr. Restoration of shola grasslands which is the major habitat for the animal will be taken up as a priority activity, the government order stated. In order to enhance awareness about the need for the conservation of the Nilgiri Tahr, October 7th would be celebrated as "Nilgiri Tahr Day," it added.

Nilgiri Tahr is the only caprine (goat or sheep) species found in the tropical mountains of southern India. The Tahrs inhabit meadows with steep cliffs at elevations between 300-2600 meters above sea level. The species can live in the wild for up to nine years, however, its typical lifespan is around three years, owing to high infant mortality rates. In captivity, the species can live up to 20 years and the Tahr can give birth to one lamb each year, after a six-month gestation period. Tigers, leopards and wild dogs are the primary predators that target the Nilgiri Tahr.
