The White House will review regulations for cryptocurrency brokers that would compel them to report customer transactions to the IRS for scrutiny. Will that weigh on crypto markets and investors who've already been ruled by a deep sell-off and rising bankruptcies over the last year is a question.

Faced with the twin problems of a low birth rate and an ageing population, Japan has sounded the alarm. Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida on Monday said that the twin problems pose an urgent risk to society and said that the issue "cannot wait and cannot be postponed." He also pledged to address the issue by establishing a new government agency.

What did the PM say?

Addressing lawmakers during a policy address marking the start of a new parliament session, Kishida said that according to estimates the number of births in the country dropped below 800,000 last year.

"Japan is standing on the verge of whether we can continue to function as a society," he warned, adding that "focusing attention on policies regarding children and child-rearing is an issue that cannot wait and cannot be postponed."

"We must build a child-first social economy to reverse the (low) birth rate," said Kishida.

How serious is the situation?

Japan has a population of around 125 million people, and in 2022, as the PM mentioned in his address, the population for the first time recorded only 80,000 births. Forecasts had predicted this would happen, but unfortunately, it happened eight years too soon.

For the last eleven years, the country has been breaking its yearly record for the lowest-ever births. In 2020, it reported 840,832 births and in 2021; it reported a 3.5 per cent fall to 811,604. This year, it has apparently fallen even more to a new low of 80,000.

Japan is the world's second-oldest country with a median age of 49. About, 28 per cent of its population is aged 65 years or older. The tiny city-state of Monaco with a measly population of 36,686 is the oldest, with around 36 per cent of its citizens over the age of 65.

The nation's fertility rate, which is the number of children a Japanese woman will have in her lifetime too took a hit. In 2021, it fell by 0.30 points to 1.30 children per woman.

What steps have Japan taken to deal with the so-called "ticking time bomb"?

To deal with the falling birthrate, Kishida's government, as per the leader, has launched multiple policies, including the new Children and Families Agency in April.

The policies have been designed to support parents and ensure the "sustainability" of the world's third-largest economy.

As per the UN, since the early 1990s, "the Japanese Government has expanded family policies and programmes in three areas: (1) childcare services; (2) parental leave schemes; and (3) monetary assistance in the form of child allowances."

In October 2022, the government also proposed extending parental leave from 14 weeks to 26 weeks for mothers and from eight weeks to 12 weeks for fathers.

What is behind this population decline?

Japan is dealing with two problems: a shrinking workforce and an ageing population.

While the rate of decline has slowed in recent years, thanks to an increase in foreign employees arriving under a more liberal visa system, coronavirus has had a detrimental impact, preventing firms facing labour shortages from hiring foreign workers.

Japan is not alone in facing this population decline. Its closest neighbours have also reported the problem. As per AFP, this could be chalked up to factors like rising living costs, more women entering the workforce and people choosing to have children later or not have them. Recently China too reported that for the first time in six decades, its population has declined.

What does a declining population do to a country?

A community with a higher proportion of senior citizens can be less appealing to businesses. Business owners face a shortage of qualified workers, while the country's economy suffers without foreign businesses.

Twitter CEO Elon Musk too had voiced concern about Japan's falling birth rate. In May 2022, the billionaire had warned that the nation may soon "cease to exist", which he remarked would be a great loss for the world.

As per a report, the United States Justice Department (DoJ) is poised to sue Alphabet Inc's Google regarding the platform's dominance over the digital advertising market.

Citing people familiar with the matter, Bloomberg reported that the case is expected to be filed in a federal court before the end of this week.

As per AFP, the lawsuit alleging violation of antitrust laws, which relate to how a tech giant acquires or maintains its dominance, will be the second federal complaint filed against the search giant. The previous lawsuit which focuses on Google's monopoly in the search was filed in 2020 and is scheduled to go to trial in September of this year.

It would also be the fifth lawsuit challenging Google's business practices in the US. Apart from the two cases by the US DoJ, state attorney generals have filed three separate suits, alleging domination of the online search market, advertising technology and apps on the Android mobile platform; all in violation of antitrust laws.

Google is currently the number one player in the $278.6 billion digital-ad market in the United States and controls most of the technology used to "buy, sell and serve online advertising."

Google has previously argued that the ad tech system was a crowded and competitive one and had pointed at its competition with Facebook Inc, AT&T, Comcast and others.

Morning news brief: Two shootings in California, Elon Musk testifies in second day of 2018 tweet trial, & more

Consumer Reports, an American non-profit consumer organisation, says dark chocolates are not really a healthier choice.

Many consumers eat dark chocolate because of its potential health benefits and relatively low sugar content, but there is "nothing healthy" about eating heavy metals, according to consumer reports.

Chocolate makers have been urged to reduce harmful metals in their dark chocolate offerings after testing reveals high levels of exposure.

Also read | Scientists find the chocolaty secret to chocolate's sweetness

Consumer Reports have appealed to four chocolate brands to commit by valentine's day to reduce lead and cadmium amounts from their dark chocolate products after conducting a series of tests.

In a letter addressed to Hershey's, Mondelez International, Theo Chocolate and Trader's Joe, Consumer Reports said long-term exposure to the metals might cause harm, including damage to the nervous system, kidneys, and immune system suppression, among other health complications.

These products can pose a great danger to pregnant women's and young children's well-being, especially due to the risk of developmental problems. The letters, accompanied by 55,000 petition signatures, aim to pressure chocolate manufacturers.

Consumer Reports from last month said that 23 of the 28 dark chocolate bars it tested contained dangerous amounts of lead, cadmium, or both, which could be dangerous, especially for those with more than one ounce of chocolate daily.

A further breakdown of those previous reports showed five chocolate brands had high levels of both metals. Two from Theo, one from Trader Joe's, Lily's, owned by Hershey's, and Green & Black's, owned by Mondelez.

Consumer Reports remain concerned about the effect of the addition of such harmful substances. While Hershey's, Mondelez, Godiva and Lindt did not respond to a Reuters request for comments, they have all been sued previously over those findings.

But a trade group, the National Confectioners Association, said the recommendations, which Consumer Reports followed and thought were "the most protective available," are "not food safety requirements" and that chocolates are still safe to eat.

Also read | Scientists find the chocolaty secret to chocolate's sweetness Consumer Reports have appealed to four chocolate brands to commit by valentine's day to reduce lead and cadmium amounts from their dark chocolate products after conducting a series of tests. Just days after causing havoc in Port Phillip Bay in Australia on Friday last week, an elephant seal reappeared on a Mornington Peninsula beach. A regional operations manager with Victoria’s Conservation Regulator, Gleen Sharp said that he helped coax the massive seal away from danger last week.

He said, “I was handed an oar, and was trying to get it back to the beach and into the water.”

It was a “large, large animal.” He said that despite being 500 kg the animal was pretty quick, Guardian reported.

The seal’s rescue effort on Friday began after the Police and Parks Victoria responders blocked the traffic to give the aquatic animal space to make its way back to sea. But the seal then turned around and went up into a local service station.

The officials suspect the reason for the seal going down the road in Port Lonsdale was that it was being harassed. The officials also reported that they heard dogs barking at the seal and Sharp also said that the people were getting too close and were taking selfies.

“We believe it was trying to retreat somewhere to safety.”

Sharp added that at the service station, the seal saw its reflection on the glass and defended itself. “That meant breaking the glass.” “Unfortunately, it did probably sustain a couple of cuts.”

Similar instances occurred on Saturday at Blairgowrie, Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula, and a similar appearing seal popped up.

He also said that the worst thing people can do is jeopardise their return home. He strongly discouraged people from feeding the seal. “The last thing we want is to make it reliant upon human interaction.”

A lifeguard named Luke Shepardson, who is more dedicated to saving lives than winning any international surfing contest, this time bagged the first prize in Eddie Aikau Big Wave Invitational in Hawaii. The competition is held only when the waves at Waimea Bay consistently reach 30 feet or bigger.

Shepardson, 27, participated in the contest after he took special permission from his boss to take time out from his day to compete.

He scored 89.1 points out of 90 to claim the title and won $10,000 as prize money.

He said, “I told myself, ‘I’m in it because I can win it.”

“It was super scary. The waves were huge, and it was a dream come true just to be part of The Eddie, just to be on the alternate list. I can’t believe it – it’s crazy. I’ve got to get back to the tower to make sure everyone’s OK until the end of the day.”

He was joined by other winners including Kelly Slater, Bruce Irons and Ross Clarke.

John Florence, the two-time WSL Champion, won the latest competition in 2016, and went close to becoming the first two-champion, but lost to Shepardson.
