<p>The interim government in Bangladesh headed by Muhammad Yunus has been told by Russia to pay $630 million in outstanding and current interest on a loan for&nbsp;the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant by Sunday (Sep 15).&nbsp;</p>

<p>According to a letter from the Russian authorities, written to Bangladesh's&nbsp;Economic Relations Division (ERD), dated 21 August, Dhaka owes&nbsp;$480 million in interest and penalty charges for the period from March 15, 2022 to March 15, 2024. <p>The payment deadline is September 15, which is Sunday, while September 16 and 17 are non-business days in China, which means the earliest Bangladesh can deposit the money is September 18. Missing the deadline could incur more penalties.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Russia has also declined Bangladesh's request to defer principal repayment, scheduled to begin in March 2027, until March 2029.&nbsp;</p>

The payment deadline is September 15, which is Sunday, while September 16 and 17 are non-business days in China, which means the earliest Bangladesh can deposit the money is September 18. Missing the deadline could incur more penalties. Russia has also declined Bangladesh's request to defer principal repayment, scheduled to begin in March 2027, until March 2029. Maharashtra Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president Chandrashekhar Bawankule's son Sanket Bawankule reportedly fled the spot after an Audi car owned by him hit several vehicles in the early hours of Monday (Sep 9). The incident took place in the Ramdaspeth area around 1 AM local time. According to police, the Audi first collided with complainant Jitendra Sonkamble's car before ramming into a moped, injuring the two youths who were riding it. After the incident, the driver and one more occupant were detained while the remaining three including Sanket Bawankule, fled the scene. The detained, identified as Arjun Hawre and Ronit Chittamwar, were taken to the Sitabuldi police station for further investigation. Their medical examinations were still underway. "The Audi car struck some more vehicles moving towards the Mankapur area. At T-Point there, the vehicle hit a Polo car. Its occupants chased the Audi and stopped it near the Mankapur bridge. Two occupants, identified as driver Arjun Hawre and Ronit Chittamwar, were stopped by those in the Polo car," the police official was quoted as saying by PTI. “A case of rash driving and other offences was registered on the complaint of Sonkamble. No action has been taken so far against Sanket Bawankule and the other two occupants who reportedly escaped from the scene at Mankapur bridge.” The BJP chief admitted that the Audi was registered under his son's name when quizzed about the incident. "Police should conduct a thorough and impartial investigation into the accident without any bias. Those found guilty should be charged and appropriate action should be taken against them. I have not spoken to any police official. The law must be equal for all,” he said. Morning news brief: Republican report on US Afghan exit; Indian army neutralises terrorists in J&K, and more

<p>Former Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat has stated that those happy over her loss in the Paris Olympics should be tried for "sedition". Phogat was disqualified from participating in the final of her wrestling event after she was found overweight and stripped of the medals.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Phogat, who joined the Indian National Congress (INC) earlier this week, claimed that people who&nbsp;they enjoyed her Olympic medal loss were disrespecting the nation.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"We have been hearing such statements (by BJP leaders) for the last 1.5 years. This shows their mentality. If they are saying that they are happy that I didn't win at the Olympics, they should be tried for sedition. That medal didn't belong to me but to the whole nation. They have disrespected the nation," Phogat was quoted as saying by&nbsp;<em>India Today TV.&nbsp;</em></p>

<p>Ahead of the Haryana assembly polls, Phogat&nbsp;is attempting to make her disqualification and subsequent reaction from some Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders a major talking topic. She&nbsp;added that none of the leaders from the saffron party approached her to show solidarity.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"When I returned to India from Paris, a huge roadshow was held&nbsp;to welcome me. No one from the BJP, be it the chief minister, deputy CM or any other leader, came to welcome me and show support," said Phogat.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"They just put statements on social media that we gave this much (monetary rewards) to me but everyone knows that they are doing it for votes," she added.</p>

'Should be tried for sedition': Vinesh Phogat on those celebrating her Olympic medal loss

<p>Former US president Donald Trump is leading Democrat rival, Kamala Harris, in the homestretch of the presidential campaign, a national poll of likely voters by <em>The New York Times </em>and Siena College has shown.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Trump is leading Harris&nbsp;by a 48–47 margin, which puts him right back where he was when President Joe Biden dropped his re-election bid.</p>

<p>In the immediate aftermath of Biden calling it quits, Harris received a major fillip to her campaign as Trump failed to consolidate his position. However, the poll suggests that despite the bottlenecks, Trump's support remains 'remarkably resilient'.&nbsp;</p>

<p>If the poll figures translate&nbsp;into reality, it would represent a higher share of votes for Trump than he&nbsp;received at the ballot box in either 2016 or 2020.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The poll results come a couple of days before the first and potentially only televised debate between Trump and Harris. Tuesday (Sep 10) night could potentially be the make-or-break opportunity for Harris as 28 per cent of likely voters said they still need to know more about the vice president, compared to nine per cent wanting to know more about Trump.&nbsp;</p>

<p>With the margins wafer thin in the swing states, a poor performance in the debate, akin to Biden's disastrous showing in June, could potentially allow Trump to run away with the contest.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The poll suggests that Harris is currently&nbsp;ahead in Wisconsin, Michigan and Pennsylvania and tied in four other swing states -- Nevada, Georgia, North Carolina and Arizona.</p>

<p>A 20-year-old Pakistani citizen, residing in Canada and arrested for planning a terror attack in New York, was aiming for it to be the 'largest attack on the US soil' - analysis of his social media footprint has revealed.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Muhammad Shahzeb Khan, also known as Shazeb Jadoon, was arrested in Canada on Wednesday (Sep 4) and charged with&nbsp;attempting to provide material support and resources to a designated foreign terrorist organisation (FTO), the Islamic State (IS).&nbsp;</p>

<p>Khan was planning a terrorist attack in the Big Apple around October 7 - the first anniversary of Hamas' terrorist attack on Israel, according to US Attorney General Merrick B. Garland.</p>

<p>Khan started posting about his support for the IS in or about November last year on social media and other encrypted messaging apps.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"If we succeed with our plan, this would be the largest attack on US soil since 9/11," he said in one of the messages.</p>

<h2><strong>Khan's planning for the attack</strong></h2>

<p>The Pakistani national was only arrested after he started conversing with two undercover law enforcement officers.&nbsp; He confirmed that alongside him, a US-based IS supporter, identified as "Associate-1" in the documents, was also planning to carry out an attack in a US city.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Khan was to travel from Canada to New York where he intended to use "automatic and semi-automatic weapons to carry out a mass shooting in support of IS&nbsp;at a Jewish centre in Brooklyn".&nbsp;</p>

<p>Khan emphasised that “Oct 7 and Oct 11&nbsp;are the best days for targeting the Jews” because “Oct 7 they will surely have some protests and Oct 11 is Yom Kippur".&nbsp;</p>

<p>Khan boasted that NY was the perfect city to target Jews as it has the largest "jewish population in America" and "even&nbsp;if we don't attack an&nbsp;event, we could rack up easily a lot of jews".&nbsp;</p>

<p>“We are going to NYC to slaughter them," he added.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and&nbsp;Los Angeles Field Offices are investigating the case.&nbsp; The Office of International Affairs of the Department of Justice’s Criminal Division is seeking the extradition of Khan from Canada.</p>

A 20-year-old Pakistani citizen, residing in Canada and arrested for planning a terror attack in New York, was aiming for it to be the 'largest attack on the US soil' - analysis of his social media footprint has revealed. Muhammad Shahzeb Khan, also known as Shazeb Jadoon, was arrested in Canada on Wednesday (Sep 4) and charged with attempting to provide material support and resources to a designated foreign terrorist organisation (FTO), the Islamic State (IS). Khan was planning a terrorist attack in the Big Apple around October 7 - the first anniversary of Hamas' terrorist attack on Israel, according to US Attorney General Merrick B. Garland. Khan started posting about his support for the IS in or about November last year on social media and other encrypted messaging apps. "If we succeed with our plan, this would be the largest attack on US soil since 9/11," he said in one of the messages. He confirmed that alongside him, a US-based IS supporter, identified as "Associate-1" in the documents, was also planning to carry out an attack in a US city. Khan was to travel from Canada to New York where he intended to use "automatic and semi-automatic weapons to carry out a mass shooting in support of IS at a Jewish centre in Brooklyn". Khan emphasised that “Oct 7 and Oct 11 are the best days for targeting the Jews” because “Oct 7 they will surely have some protests and Oct 11 is Yom Kippur". The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and Los Angeles Field Offices are investigating the case. The Office of International Affairs of the Department of Justice’s Criminal Division is seeking the extradition of Khan from Canada. If convicted, Khan faces a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison. A federal district court judge will determine any sentence after considering the US Sentencing Guidelines and other statutory factors. (With inputs from agencies)
